10.4.11 XServe and IP POrts locked

Ciao to all.
Let me share this strange thing.
On my XServe I have4 eth interfaces; one dedicated to internet ( only for mail and www) and the orthers for internal use. Also I have few services activated: AFP, print service, dns (secondary),windows services and few other running extrnally like COmmuniGate Pro, FMaker server, 4D Server.
The XServe has 4 eth interfaces; one dedicated to internet ( only for mail and www) and the orthers for internal use.
CGpro is also used for VoIP use.
When my customer sends mailing lists, the server (CGPro...) starts to work well but after a short time (often) the smtp out stops to work.
The problem seems to be localized into the OS and the way it manage the lan interfaces.
First of all, the Firewall of Mac Os X Server (10.4.11) is off (it was on but I started to have dubt ...).
Happens that after a big send of email messages ( made with CGPro) the IP start to have bad behavior.
The port 25 for smtp is open from outside ( I can telnet it ) BUT from inside to outside is not working!
I tried to telnet a mail server and I cannot reach it; from home, at the same moment, I can.
I must reboot the server to solve immediately the problem and, as you can imagine, is not a good solution.
Any suggestion?

This is a known issue - two library files were accidentally omitted from the bootable portion of the NetInstall disk.
If you're comfortable with Terminal.app you can manually fix this. The source thread is at:

  • Xserve and keyboard

    Hi everybody,
I have an Xserve with and USB keyboard and mouse. I have tried even restarting and shutting down with booting again but i get allways the same. No keyboard and no mouse working. I am new with it and i dont know if there is something i must activate. I have tried to change the mouse, the keyboard and the port but nothing.
    Help me please!!!
    Thanks.

    martinfe,
There's also a checkbox in the Security preference pane of System Preferences to "disable mouse and keyboard when Xserve enclosure lock is engaged" that you can uncheck.
It's a "good thing" to leave the enclosure lock in the locked position so that your disk drives don't pop out if they are bumped.

Bluetooth and USB ports aren't working, so am unable to use Imac past turning it on. There's no way to connect mouse or keyboard, it started right after a software update for Maverick (OS X bash Update 1.0 – OS X Mavericks), bluetooth symbol not showing in the task bar at all.

    Hi SBrwn,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The symptom you're describing can be frustrating to troubleshoot as our options are limited. I do suggest resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) if you have not already. This step can help you regain use of USB and Bluetooth.
Follow these steps to reset the SMC on your iMac:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer. [by holding down the power button]
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information at this link:

  • Lenovo, Motherboard change, port locker now not working

I bought a Lenovo V570 and it worked well for a few months. Then the computer would not start up at all, and was not getting any power. I took it back to Best Buy and they said there are quite a few problems with that, and that they would send it out to replace the motherboard.
I got the computer back a week later, and it was working fine, except that the Port Locker would not now accept the password, I am not sure if this is due to the change of the motherboard. Now I get notices that the Windows operating system is not genuine. I researched online and found out that since there is a new motherboard, the original windows installation thinks this is a new computer altogether.
I took it back to Best buy , and they say the only way is to get the computer back to factory reset. I said that will be fine but I need to back up my all data. Herein lies the problem. The port locker will not let me attach a external hard drive to back up my data, as now the port locker will not recognize my password..
I cannot plug in anything into the usb ports as they are blocked by port locker. Anyone has any ideas on how to take care of this problem ?
    Thanks in advance

You could upload your data to a web-based backup solution.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_online_backup_services
The "Windows is not genuine" message can come up after a motherboard replacement (though I don't believe Lenovo has a DMI/Tattooo issue), but the Port Locker password should remain unchanged. Regardless, I'd recommend backing up your data to one of the online backup sites and then restoring the computer back to factory defaults. Keep in mind that the online backup will probably take quite a bit of time...obviously depending on how much data you have to backup and how fast your internet connection is.

  • Default LaunchDaemons and open ports?

I recently have written a port scanner for a project at my university and after running it, I discovered that a large portion of my Macbooks' well known ports was open.
These were 21 (ftp), 22 (ssh), 23 (telnet), 53 (domain), 79 (finger)!!, 88 (kerberos), 512 (exec)!!, 513 (login), and a bunch of others (see picture below for open ports - afterwards entered @ grc.com).
I checked, if they are reachable from the internet (see picture below). They were not, but that does not say a lot(?), because if someone wanted to make a bot out of my Mac or collect data from it, this person could contact a C&C server from my machine and start communicating without opening any port of the NAT router, as the router allows bidirectional communication if started by the client(?).
I checked, if these ports are reachable from within a local network, by requesting the services behind them from another computer running Linux. And they are! Everyone within the Non-VPN networks of my university was and is able to fetch personal information from me over fingerd! To prevent further leakage, I will block any incoming connections from now on.
    > finger user@{Macbook's IP}
same output as when running locally
    > finger user@localhost
    [localhost]
    Trying ::1...
    Login: MyUserName         Name: MyNameReplaced
    Directory: /Users/MyUserName            Shell: /usr/local/bin/fish
On since Sun Oct 26 13:02 (CET) on console, idle 7:52 (messages off)
On since Sun Oct 26 17:15 (CET) on ttys000
On since Sun Oct 26 20:25 (CET) on ttys001, idle 0:05
    No Mail.
    No Plan.
I am able to login to the Mac via telnet over the LAN, etc.
I checked the configuration of my firewall. It is/was activated. Signed software is allowed to accept incoming connections. Cloaking is not activated and I am not blocking every incoming connection. There are five services in the list below, they are all from Apple. I can not remove them. The minus button is grayed out.
When I ticked 'Block all incoming connections', the services behind the ports were no longer detectable/reachable from the LAN, but the daemons are still running on the Mac!
So my question is, why are these daemons running?! Why on earth is the fingerd running or exec?! This seems not normal. Who has started them (software or person)? I strongly limit access to my computer. I always lock it, when leaving it unattended. I use NoScript in Firefox. Never do I open attachments from mails.
I checked the Mac of a friend with my PortScanner (in his LAN and on his Mac) and his has none of the ports open mine has.
I have not checked my ports/firewall for a long time, so I can't remember if those ports were closed at any time before.
Meanwhile I will read something about launchd, to gather more information.

I'm not an expert on this, but I'm not certain what you are concerned about. All messaging in unix systems is done through ports, and so a variety of ports need to be open for normal system operations. OS X out-of-the-box probably strikes a balance between convenience and paranoia - ports that might be more secure closed left open by default so that novice users aren't driven out of their wits - but I can't imagine that it leaves open anything that constitutes a true vulnerability. Or if it does, you should file a bug report.
I'm told every med student suffers from hypochondria at one point or another, and I know that every comp sci student will sooner or later have a short freak-out over security. So take a deep breath...

I have a I pad MD522LL/A version 7.0 and cannot get off of mute I have tried items in settings and moving back lock switch as well as volume any help

    Hey there,
It sounds like you are unable to get any sound from your built in speaker on your device, even after toggling the side switch. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article named:
iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5180
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved after restoring the iPhone software, please contact Apple Support.
The article title mentions the iPhone, but the steps are relevant for the iPad as well.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • How to install 1 xserve and 2 xserve RAID ??

Hi i'm new at fiber world. Could anyone tell me how can i install 2 xserve raid on 1 xserve? In this moment i have 1 Xserve and 1 Xserve RAID conected directly with 2 fiber cables. I need to buy other xserve RAID but how can i conect it? i have to use a fiber switch? and if this is correct wich switch u recomend?
A link with schematics will be apreciated.
    Thx in advance.

In the sense that you can plug everything in and it will auto-negotiate and things will just "show up" then yes it is like an ethernet hub.
You will probably have to do some simple configuration of the Sanbox via their admin tool but as long as you're only using the Xserve/RAID it should be easy because you just have one zone and all full speed ports. The QLogic docs are good, if basic, and the admin tool is pretty straightforward - especially for an easy set-up like this.
The way that fibre is not like ethernet (just so you're aware) is cannot have two Xserves plugged in sharing the same drives. This will work if you try it but horrible data corruption will eventually occur. Fibre is like ATA or SCSI and you can't share it between host computers in it's raw form. Just to be clear.
    Good Luck,

  • Xserve and Airport Network

Currently I have an Xserve G5 running through a switch hardwired computers. All of the ethernet ports connected to the switch provide my MBP with a DHCP and I can access both the server and the internet. The ABSs however will not recognize the server. They are all set up in Bridge mode and originally had them all set up under the same network name but changed them to separate names to trouble shoot. I have checked the ABS and purchased a new one to make sure that they are not the problem but they seem to be working otherwise.
I have assigned also manually assigned static IP addresses in sequential order and have no known conflicts with these addresses.
I currently only have one of these base stations working could it be as simple as resetting the server and the switch?
    10.0.1.50
    10.0.1.51
    10.0.1.52
    10.0.1.53
Router addresses are the same and the
    DNS server is 10.0.1.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.255
any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Matthew and Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your description of your network configuration is a little sparse and hard to understand, but I'll give this a try.
Typical ISP connections are made through a modem/router. Usually, the modem/router will run a DHCP server to distribute IP addresses to devices on your internal network (LAN). Your MBP, Xserve and ABS's (when the ABS's are operating in Bridge mode) would receive a LAN IP address from the DHCP server in the modem/router, provided that they are configured to use DHCP in their Network settings in System Preferences.
Where things can get sticky - and get horribly confusing - is when there are two DHCP servers running on your LAN, effectively creating two different LANs within your network. Even worse is when the DHCP servers are running the same IP/Subnet groups.
You can, for example, configure the ABS to distribute IP addresses to wireless clients using it's DHCP server. In this scenario, wireless clients would not be able to see other devices upstream from the ABS since they are outside the DHCP network range the ABS is providing - even if the IP range and subnets match to what the DHCP server in the modem/router is using. (The ABS will use NAT to translate the IP address traffic in its DHCP server, treating them as separate network entities.)
Likewise, you could use the two network interfaces on the Xserve in a similar manner, connecting one to the modem/router and the other to a separate network switch, then enabling DHCP in OS X Server tied to the second network interface. Devices on the downlink side from the Xserve and switch would get their IP addresses from the Xserve DHCP server. This is perfectly fine, as long as the two network interfaces never cross paths on your network other than at the Xserve itself.
Manually assigning IP addresses on DHCP networks is also fine, as long as there are no replicated IP addresses, and that the Router IP Address and Subnet Mask match what is being distributed by the DHCP server. For example, you could have a setting such as:
    IP Address: 10.0.1.50
    Router IP: 10.0.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
Most modem/routers have a Web interface that you can access to manually reserve DHCP IP addresses to particular devices as well. Most will also let you restrict DHCP to a range of IP addresses, letting you run static IP addresses for devices on your LAN while still providing DHCP service to other devices without pre-assigned static IP addresses.
Now, compare all of that information with how your network is configured. If you follow the chain of network devices, determine which are providing DHCP services and where they are in the chain of your network flow, you can usually find the problem.
    HTH,
    -Doug

  • MacPro Front Firewire and USB Ports Acting Up

Devices connected to the front firewire 800 and USB ports on my MacPro are acting up. (2x2.66GHz dual-core, early 2007) I put a firewire rugged LaCie onto the firewire port and the MacPro hung. The drive works fine on my MacBook. On the MacPro, the CPU on all cores ran up to 100% and the machine became inaccessible. I put a 80 GB video iPod on the USB port and it could not sync without errors. Could not eject the iPod - OS X reported that an application was accessing the device, even though nothing was running.
It seems as though connecting devices to the front ports initiates a process that does not behave and/or teminate correctly. All other ports work OK, including those on the back of the machine and the USB and firewire ports on my Cinema display.

OK, a couple of things. First, have you tried another USB cable? You may have one that is flaky at USB2 speeds which can cause all sorts of mischief.
Have you tried both "free" USB ports on the machine, or the USB port on the machine that you have the keyboard hooked to?
Finally, you may find some information in your system log that would point to the answer.
In my own experience, USB2 on the G5 has not been capable of reaching serious transfer rates. While I get transfer rates close to 60 MB/sec through FW800, I have never gotten more than about 13 MB/sec through USB2, using several flavors of external drive/SATA toaster/enclosure interfaces. However, I have also had bad USB cables lock the machine up like the Tin Man.

  • Xserve and Cinema Display

My school just received a new G5 Xserve and a 20 inch cinema display. Unfortunately, the display has a DVI connection and the Xserve has a 9 pin male connector. What can I get to connect the two?

There are adapters to use all the stuff you mentioned together, but some of them are expensive.
MUCH more information on exactly which models of things you are trying to interconnect to give exact advice.
For example, you said cinema display. There are CRTs, LCDs, Lucite borders, Aluminum borders, some with ADC connectors, some with DVI connectors, and the new ones now have Mini DisplayPort connectors. Some have power supplies, some do not.
For the ones with ADC and no power supply, just buy a used DVI-to-ADC adapter with Power Supply (under US$100 on the used market) and it becomes a DVI display with a power supply in the cable.
You said Mac Pro. There are at least six models, depending on how you count, and depending on which display card is installed, some stuff will plug right in, some requires an adapter. Some adapters are twenty bucks, some are over a hundred bucks.
If you want one or two displays, the first port on the newest Mac Pros at this writing have a dual-Link DVI port, good for up to a 30-inch cinema display. The other two are Mini DisplayPort. Mini DisplayPort can be turned into single-Link DVI (good for up to 1920 wide) with a cheap adapter. If you want three display, there are MUCH more stringent requirements.
XServe RAID should also be compatible, but depending on what Interface you have been using, it could vary from free hookup or quite pricey. There is an "extra" gigabit Ethernet port on the Mac Pro which is the free hookup. If you need SAS or SCSI, you would need to add a PCIe slot card, and those can get pricey.

I just recently upgraded to Firefox 5.0.1 and now the "lock" icon doesn't appear anywhere (I can find) when accessing secure websites. I haven't seen it once. It used to appear in the lower right corner of the screen. I also have Norton Internet Security.
