10.4.3, Screen goes to sleep when playing DVD

Hi All,
I've recently upgraded from 10.4.2 to 10.4.3. Now, when I fire up DVD Player and watch a DVD, the energy save kicks in every 10 minutes and makes my screen go black. Very annoying.
In 10.4.2, DVD Player must have over-ridden the energy save settings. I could watch through a movie without any problems.
Any help for making it work like it did in 10.4.2?
Thanks,
Chip

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried to set the timing of Energy Saver in
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver?
Yes, I realize that I could go to Energy Saver and change the setting to extend the time before the screen goes dark. But, I don't want have to do this every time I watch I movie. It's a pain and I'm likely to forget to switch it back. Under 10.4.2, it just worked...just like the Apple motto. It was very nice. Now, under 10.4.3 it stopped working in this nice way.
It's always sad when upgrades (10.4.2 -> 10.4.3) result in a step back in user experience.
I'm hoping that there is a setting somewhere that I missed or that there is a patch that I can download that'll fix this problem.
Thanks for the suggestion. Any others?
Chip

  • Screen goes to sleep when watching full screen video in browser

    Hey,
On my MacBook Pro, with Mavericks, I often watch MLB.tv, WWE Network or even Youtube videos on full screen. Since upgrading to Mavericks, my screen goes to sleep after the normal amount of time based on my power settings in the system preferences. In previous versions of OS X, if i had a video on full screen, whether it was with Quicktime, VLC, Safari, Chrome, etc. the screen would never go to sleep.
Is there a way to prevent this from happening other than just changing how long it takes for the screen to time out?
    Thanks.

I think you may want to point this out to Apple… it sounds like an oversight.

Can you set a 'hot corner' to disable the screensaver activation? It's less than ideal but it could save your sanity - just slide the cursor into the corner.
Hot corners should be available in the Desktop & Screensaver section of system preferences. I'm on another OS at present and may be mis-remebering an eariler OS feature.

  • Screen goes to sleep when opened

Shortly after the install of Lion I started noticing that my screen goes into sleep mode or just shuts off completely after I open my macbook pro.  I tried the general method of refreshing the screen of pressing the spacebar but that only worked for a week or two.  Now I'm having to press "fn > F1 or F2" in order to get the screen to come back on.  Any ideas on what's going on and how to fix it?

Simply install the upgrade, create a new disc with the new hardware drivers. Boot into Windows and install the new drivers from the newly burned CD.
For Boot Camp related troubleshooting post your problem in the Boot Camp forum.
For Windows problems try the Mac forums at the MicroSoft forums or pose the question in the Boot Camp forum.
If your Windows installation is corrupted you can try booting from the Windows installer and running the system repairs.

  • IPod screen goes to sleep while playing

    Hello,
I have what I believe is either the 6th or 7th generation iPod 120gig. I just picked it up used and it is in good condition.
The problem I have is, while I have it playing on my Bose system, the songs play, but I can't see what song is actually playing like my 1st generation iPod does. This one, the screen goes to sleep while the songs play. is there a fix for this possibly? I have many songs and it's always nice to just look over and see what is playing.
    Thank you,
    JG

Your problem is that your iPod is not sensing that your headset is inserted. There is a pin inside the headphone port on the Nano that senses if it is inserted fully. If it does not sense anything, it will pause playback to save battery power when the screen dims. Here are the solutions:
Insert it fully. This will fix it for most of you. Press that thing in there all the way. You should feel and hear a full click when it is fully seated. If you can see ANY silver of the headset jack, it is not fully inserted.
Debris inside the headset port. If you are totally unable to push the headset jack all the way, the most likely problem is that you have crud inside your headphone jack. Try blowing it out or slapping it against your palm with the headset port facing your palm to try and get the stuff out. If you look into he jack with a light, you should be able to see to the bottom. The entire inside of the headset port is white, so if it looks dark at the bottom, that is the crud that is keeping your nano from working.
Headset jack or plug issue. If you cannot solve the problem with 1 or 2, then there is likely something physically wrong with either the headset jack on your headphones or the headset port on the nano.
If none of the above works, you need to take it to the Apple store or wherever you purchased it. I think they are still under warranty.

  • Screen goes dark (sleep) when using handset in phone mode

When I am talking on the phone and remove the phone to hang up the phone goes dark (into sleep mode?) Is anyone else having this issue, does anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance for your help

I had that problem when using a case that covered the proximity sensor. I don't know if you're using a case or not, but taking off the case solved the problem right away.

  • Music stops when screen goes to sleep but my headphones are inserted correctly?

I have an Ipod nano 6th Gen, and when the screen goes to sleep the music stops.  I have set up my sleep/wake button to play/pause so when the screen goes black and the music has stopped, I press the sleep/wake button twice and the music starts again without the screen coming back on.  I have read other comments and I have made sure that my headphones are all the way there does not appear to be anything obstructing the headphones either.  Is anyone able to help me?  Thank you

Solved by using a 3rd party music player that can access the library on the iPad and no longer using Apple's iPod app.

  • Screen goes to sleep even when viewing movies in full screen mode

Hi, I have adjusted my settings so my screen goes to sleep after 5 minutes which is ok. But it also does this when viewing movies in full screen mode.... Is this a setting somewhere? Thanx!

    Welcome to the Discussions!
"When the computer is inactive" or "idle" means when YOU, the user, are doing nothing, neither using the keyboard nor the mouse. So you have to increase that 5 mins in Energy Saver.

  • Hi I've just download os x mavericks 10.9 on my macbook pro the trouble is when i am on the internet my screen goes of it keeps saying put in your password how can i stop this every time the screen goes to sleep

hi I've just download os x mavericks 10.9 on my macbook pro  the trouble is when i am on the internet my screen goes of it keeps saying put in your password how can i stop this everytime the screen goes to sleep

I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes.  You make it sound like it was sent to you.  At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it.  However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible.  iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer.  So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message.  One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version.  Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers.  The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.

  • Wifi turns off when screen goes to sleep - how can i disable this?

    running 10.8.4 on MBA 2013
is there a way to keep wifi alive when the screen goes to sleep (automatically turns off)?
this is very annoying that i would have some internet connected application running (eg. a download) and then the screen turns itself after a timer and also cuts the wifi. this means i have to keep my screen on if i had a big file to download. is there a way around this? i cannot find any settings addressing this issue/option.
    thank you.

    edit:
i know there's the option "prevent computer sleeping when screen is off" under power adpter, but i would like it done while running battery.
    thank you.

  • Phone turns off blue tooth connection after 30 seconds into the call (when screen goes to sleep)

Installed 2.2, paired my fascinate with my plantronics explore 240 headset, accessed voice dial (which worked), connected my call, after thirty (30) seconds the blue tooth connection dropped, picked up the phone and continued the conversation.  Just turning on bluetooth and leaving the phone sit for 5+ minutes keeping the screen active the blue tooth does not turn off, let the screen go to sleep and the blue tooth turns off.
I can not maintain a blue tooth connection when the screen goes to sleep, not even during a call.  Is there a setting I am missing to keep this from happening or ... An alternative?
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi.
The Bluetooth should not disconnect when your screen goes to sleep.  Have you tried re-pairing the Bluetooth since the upgrade?  Below I have provided you with the steps to pair the Bluetooth again.  (Please make sure both devices are fully charged when doing so.)
Step 1 - Enable Bluetooth functionality on the Samsung Fascinate.
Note: The Bluetooth power must be set to ON position to pair the handset with a Bluetooth headset.
From the main screen, tap Menu.
    Tap Settings
    Tap Wireless & Networks
Tap Bluetooth to turn on Bluetooth
Step 2 - Put your fully charged Bluetooth headset into pairing mode.
Start with your Bluetooth accessory powered off.
Press and hold the Call Control Button until the light indicator flashes blue and red.
Your Bluetooth accessory is now in pairing mode and ready to be paired with your handset.
Step 3 - Pair the Samsung Fascinate with a Bluetooth Accessory.
Note: The Bluetooth power must be set to ON position to pair the handset with a Bluetooth headset.
From the main screen, tap Menu
    Tap Settings
    Tap Wireless & Networks
    Tap Bluetooth Settings
Place accessory in pairing mode, see accessory pairing instructions.
Tap Scan for Devices, device starts Searching.
    Tap [Plantronics Bluetooth] to pair
Pairing Complete, touch home to exit.

  • MacBook Pro goes to sleep when copying files from attached drives

I have noticed that since installing Yosemite my MacBook Pro goes to sleep when it is in the middle of copying a large number of files.  When I wake it up the copying continues.
I have also noticed that when I am watching videos from my shared iTunes library on an Apple TV the video will stop after about 15 minutes and the connection to the library is lost because the MacBook Pro has gone to sleep. When woken up then access to the library is restored but I need to reselect the movie and then resume.
I have changed the power saving options to do not let drives sleep when idle and do not sleep laptop.
Anyone else have any experience of this or better still a fix.
    Thanks in advance.

I have just found that if I turn off the display sleep in the power settings then the problem is resolved.  It means though that the screen on my MacBook Pro is on all the time albeit with a screen saver.

  • Screen goes to black when tilted back too far...anyone else had this issue?

My ibook has started this crazy new thing. The screen goes to black when tilted close to all the way back. It's not that big a deal, but I was wondering if anyone else has this issue and if it possibly will get worse. When it happens, I just close the lid, let in go into sleep mode, then open it back up touch a key and all's well, I just have to be careful not to lean the screen back too far. In the past, I've had to send it back twice for the logic board to be replaced and as much as I love Macs, I really feel this is not a well-made product. Thanks for any advice....

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
As the old joke goes about the guy who went to the doctor and, raising his arm, said, "Doc, it hurts when I do this." And the doctor said, "Well, then, don't do that!"
Yes, it is a familiar thing to happen to an iBook. The backlight cable can get pinched in the hinge, causing it to go off at certain angles.
You can read more about it here:

  • It goes to sleep, when I open it I cant click on anything.

When I close the lid or the macbook goes to sleep, when I open it I cant click on anything. The mouse moves but it doesnt let me close windows or do anything else either. I forced the programs to shut with cmd+alt+esc and it did let me to click on few things, however after the screen went to sleep again it did the same.Just didnt let me click on things.
Ive tried shutting the computer and rebooting it,even forced to it reboot itself and when it gets back the problem is still there.
My hardrive is fine,i run the cheks and I have 1/5 of the hardrive still in use.
However going over the activity (warning) log the following messages appeared during those freezes:
    5.2.2013 19.10.57,756 System Preferences[225]: **** ERROR: *** -[ESGraphicsOptionsController _coreGetGraphicsStateForSelector:]: AGCGetMuxState() failed
Whats wrong? What can I do?

    Hi Icemanjohn53,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Take a look at the article linked below, it provides troubleshooting tips that can help you resolve the display issue with your iPhone 5.
Get help with the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If your screen is too dim, too bright, or you see only faint images
Try to adjust the brightness. If the screen doesn’t respond when you adjust the brightness, open several apps to make sure it’s not an issue with only one app.
If you have a screen protector, try removing it. Try removing your case if it includes a screen protector.
If you see the issue in multiple apps, restart your device.
If restarting doesn’t fix the issue, restore your device.
If you still see the issue after you restore, contact Apple Support.
    Cheers,
    -Jason

  • MBP 13" - Going to Sleep when moved

I have a new 13" MBP and I noticed last week that it just went to sleep when I lifted it off my lap and placed it on the table.
I was downloading an update at the time and also using iSquint to convert some video clips for my iPod so the machine was warm but hardly over stressed.
I tried to recreate this a few times afterwards and it seemed to work everytime I moved the MBP. I disable the Sudden Motion Sensor - cured it. Re-enabled the sensor and it seemed to stay cured until last night when I was doing the same thing again (Mac OS and Safari updates and iSquint).
It's not like these are particularly sudden movements that would be causing this.
Are they supposed to sleep if they get too hot? Could it just be overheating?
EDIT: I should just mention that since this has happened it's also become very unreliable with sleeping. It goes to sleep when it shouldn't and when I try to wake it I get a blank screen. Seems I have to open and close the lid a few times to get the screensaver logon box to appear again.
