10.4.3 Upgrade - FANS FIXED: the 'ghost in the machine' syndrome is solved!

I'm posting this topic here just to help anyone else experiencing the same problem.
After upgrading to 10.4.3 the fans on my G5 would turn themselves on every 10 seconds or so for a little while, and all the while it seemed like the hard drive was working, even when no apps were opened up. The machine was noticeably slower because of this, and this went on for week. After reading the forums I had reset the SMU, reset PRAM and nvram, changed the performance to highest in preferences-energy saver-options yet the problem was persistent.
Accidentally I realised that spotlight was indexing the machine and taking forever to even calculate the time needed to do that, ie for weeks it was doing this and not indicating how long the indexing should take to complete.
This article mentions the indexing and slowing of the mac after upgrading the os: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302223
but what helped my issue was this article, how to re-index: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301562
now after dragging the 3 volumes of my mac onto the privacy window of spotlight, in preferences, followed by removing them, the mac restarted the re-indexing process and after only about 15 mintues the whole thing settled down. Now my G5 is quiet as a whisper again. And fast too!
Other cases may be due to different reasons, but neither I nor the apple tech support thought of the problem having anything to do with spotlight-indexing.

Hi, roobp57 —
Thanks for posting about your conundrum and its solution.
Here's hoping it helps other folks with similar puzzles!
Warm regards,
Dean

  • My Mac Mini Turns on by itself or is it  The Ghost In The Machine?

Lately I have been noticing that my Mac Mini is turning itself on after being off for several hours. At first I thought it might be another member of my household, but when I questioned they all about they all state they did not turn it on. Now unless I have ghost in my house that are big Mac fans I can't figure out why or how it can be turning itself on. As far as I know there have been no power outages in my area that might have caused it to think it needs to be turned on when the power came back in, and besides why would it need to restart after a power outage if it was already off when the power went out and came back on.

Check your Energy Saver settings in System Preferences. Under Schedule there may be a startup time someone set, which is causing it to start up at the odd time of the day.

  • Can I ask apple store to replace my MBP with Retina display? because I have the ghosting issue with it!

I bought my MBP with Retina display less than two months ago and now I have this problem which the ghost of the application that was open, remains on the background.
I took the device to apple store and they decide to change a harware of it!! now I just feel like it is no going to be repaired.
just wanna know despite that 14 days of purchase date has passed, can I ask apple to replace the whole device and give me a new one or not!

you can ask them, but they are not obligated to fulfill your request.  They are obligated to fix any issues related to defective craftsmanship as long as your mac is under warranty however.

  • HP xw8600 workstation fans run at max all the time after upgrading CPUs and memory

Hello, This is my 1st post on the forums here so I would like to thank everyone for the help ahead of time. I have an HP xw8600 workstation on which I have upgraded the CPUs and RAM recently - after the upgrade the fans seem to spin at full speed all the time (not just under load). Before the upgrading the fans were barely heard but afterwords the workstation has become very loud. This seems odd that the fans always run fast now and seems like this is not "normal" - what needs to be done to allow the fans to again be modulated by load/temp settings as designed? I looked in the temp and fan RPM settings in the BIOS and it looks like all sensors are working (including ambient temp sensor - was stating around 20 deg. C). Hardware changes:Before - CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5460/ 3.16 GHz, 12MB L2, 1333 MHz, FSB,120WRAM: HP 32GB (16x2GB) DDR2-667 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser After -CPU: 2x Intel Xeon X5492/ 3.40 GHz, 12MB L2, 1600 MHz, FSB,150WRAM: HP 32GB (8x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM - using RAM riser NOTE: From the HP spec sheet it says that 32GB(8x4GB) is not supported by 5492... I am not sure why this is so and do not know if this has anything to do with my fans running very fast. HP 32GB(8x4GB)DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM RISER Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 HP 64GB (16x4GB) DDR2-800 ECC FBD RAM Supported ONLY w/dual processors
    5272, 5472, 5482 and 5492.
Acoustics waiver required. Other than the constantly loud fans the workstation works perfectly with the new setup. Please let me know if anyone has run into this issue with the fast fans and whether there is a fix for this (maybe flashing BIOS?). Any advice is greatly appreciated! [I originally posted this under Desktops section - http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/HP-xw8600-workstation-fans-run-at-max-all-the-time-after/td-p/3929746]

The xw8600 has a motherboard firmware setting that if it detects high powered processors in place it wants to see the "double tall" performance heatsink/double fans per heatsink in place.  I have posted about that and how I rewired a double tall to use side by side in my xw8400 next to a single tall heatsink/fan to see how cooling was affected in that workstation. The xw8400 did not ever come with double tall performance heatsinks, to my knowledge, so its motherboard's firmware is different. In those posts I also explained how to do a simple jumper wire modification on a single tall heatsink to spoof the xw8600 into thinking it had a double tall/two fans in place over each processor.  Simple and quick. So, you might want to get a couple of double talls off eBay, or try the jumper wire trick.  I'd personally advise to get the double tall heatsinks given that you're running 150W max TDP processors.  If I remember correctly HP wanted you to use the double talls for 120W max TDP and above.  I'd feel comfortable using that trick on a set of 120 watt processors if I was not hammering them frequently, but it sounds like you're a high level power user. The all-fans-on-high can be due to a failed thermisitor in the front power cable reading ambient air temps too high, but you can check that in BIOS to see the temp and it sounds like yours is not elevated incorrectly.  You can search for my experience with that in a xw6600, and it is an easy $8.00-$12.00 fix with a new cable off eBay.  You'd want the longer version for the xw8600, versus the shorter one for the xw6600. Finally, maybe you've just gone too high in your total wattage use?  Those risers can run hot and draw lots of power.  Could you live with less ram and get rid of the risers using 4GB sticks?  Sometimes those prior prohibitions regarding what is and is not supported go away with later BIOS updates.  Is your BIOS the latest? Welcome, and let us know what turns out to be the problem so others can benefit too. Scott

After upgrading to ios6 my iphone will not open .xls files in emails with the default viewer. Is there a fix for this? The same emailed .xls files still open on my ipad using ios5 while viewing email like they did on my iphone prior to upgrading. I have no special software like numbers or anything else installed on either device. Just using the default viewer provided by apple for viewing email.

The attachment is an .xls excel 97-2003 spreadsheet. I viewed the file in the email and did not edit it with any software. I can forward the file to anyone that is may want to check it out to see if they can help me. I was wondering if there was some way of forcing another ios6 install on my phone and maybe that would solve it.
Is there anyone out there that is viewing .xls files in email using ios6 w/o any other software installed like numbers or any other add ons? I am not upgrading my ipad from ios5 to ios6 so I can still continue to view the emails on my ipad. Is there an email viewer .xls plug-in that will be availablle in the next ios6 update?

  • I plugged my ipod touch into my laptop and started to down load an (1) upgrade.  But Itunes says that the upgrade will take two hours.  I started the down load and it started and stoped and eventualy never complerted the down load.  How can I fix this ?

I plugged my Ipod touch into my Dell laptop and went to Itunes.  Itunes told me I should down load an upgrade, so I did.  Itunes said the down load would take two hours.  I started the down load, but after two + hours (&longer) , after several starts and stops the down load never completed.
I recently got a (fake anti virus) virus and it damaged my computer.  I got it fixed and reinstalled the software and it appears to be working correctly. Could this be the part of the problem ?
Would it help if I reloaded the Itunes (off an external HD) or downloaded it again from Itunes ?
    Thanks

I doubt it.  For my updates, it has typically taken me many tries/retries.  Like for you, the download would stop.  and I would have to restart from the beginning.  If you get a network timed out error try disabling the security software on your computer.

  • Did the regular 15" MBP receive the upgraded fans?

OK, we all know that the regular 13" and 15" MBP's were upadted and are just as capable, acually other than the display they are more capable and more flexible machines than the Retina MBP.  The only thing that hasn't been talked about anywhere is the fans in the regular MBP's.
I bought my wife the late 2011 13" MBP 2.4GHz, 500GB (5400RPM) MBP and threw in 16GB of RAM to replace the 4GB that came in it, since it was cheap at OWC ($167).  When I get the updated 15" MBP with 2.6GHz, 512 SSD and 8GB of RAM, I will swap them out so that I have the 16GB RAM and she has the 8GB of RAM.  Another reason I wanted the 16GB of RAM is because I will be getting into Photoshop and a bit of video editinig for fun with all the videos and photos that I take and some gaming with D III and SC II.  So that's the plan so far.
    I'm torn at the moment between the 15" Retina and Non-Retina MBP.  I love the new disply but I'm torn that Apple decided to upgrade a display while loosing other features like the Ethernet Port and SuperDrive two things we are far from not needing altogether.  Although, Apple screens all around great and the Hi-Res on the regular will do fine, the Retina MBP is such a slick and powerful machine.  The money isn't a problem and I've configured both online and I'm looking at this below;
    15" MBP (non-Retina) $2,899.00
2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    512GB Solid State Drive
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide (English)
    15" MBP (with Retina) $2,887.00
2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    512GB Flash Storage
    Apple USB SuperDrive
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide (English)
Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
There's only a $12 difference in my configurations and I already have the 16GB of RAM for the non-Retina if that's the one I get.  With the non-Retina I get all the connections with out all the extra cargo and fancy display.  Yeah Apple dropped the weight of the Retina but when you consider the fact that if you want the additional capabilites then you're carrying the weight around anyhow with the extra cord for ethernet and the SuperDrive, but you do not always need the either of the two anyhow.  Another thing is that you can't upgrade it after the fact but wth my configurations above I won't need to anyhow because the only thing that I'm not going with is the 768GB Flash Drive since I already have the 2TB Time Capsule for additional storage and it's where I keep most of my data anyhow other than my documents for school.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.  I know that I've done a good bit of thinking out loud here but it helps me put things in a better perspective.  I look forward to seeing your replies.

    Clinton,
Thanks for the input.  I've been on MacSales.com and if drop the SSD from Apple on the non-Retina the price drops to $2,089.00 from $2,899.00 which is almost 1K cheaper.  I can get an OWC 480GB SSD for as cheap as $579.  There are three versions though, 1. @ 3G/s with a 3 yr warranty for the price just mentioned, another at 6G/s @ $599 with a 3 yr warranty which would be the one to get, and the Pro at 6G/s @ $729 with a 5 yr warranty.  So even going with the most expensive OWC brand I could still make out about 100 bucks or so.  Not a bad call and I've already done research on puting the OS on a recovery drive so that I can install it on the new installed drive if I go that route.
Still not sure which I want to get.  I feel that I'm going to go with the relaibilty in the regular MBP though. I'm not sure about the new one yet. I'll keep reserching to pin down an answer.  I have time before I buy anyhow, I'm in no rush and plus it would take 3-4 weeks to get the Retina anyhow, so I'll just use the time wisely to get my duck in a row.
    Thanks again.

What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.

  • Any fixes available yet to the 4.3 "upgrade" ??

Like apparently thousands of others, I have had problems with my wifi connection after the 4.3 update. I tried switching off the auto network switch in the advanced settings (that seemed to work for awhile), I tried safe mode with no improvement. The phone keeps scanning for a connection, and when I select my home network (the wireless router is 2 ft, away), it says "Authentication error occurred"  I haven't seen anyone with this message yet. I have triple checked the network key, and my wife's I phone (4) on Sprint has no trouble connecting. Same with her Sony Vaio laptop, and with my old Dell laptop. Never had any problems before connecting with my S4. While the S4 is more powerful and has some unique features (most of which I have disabled, because they are unnecessary and somewhat creepy), it seems that I had a much better overall experience with my old HTC Evo on Sprint.
I have tried to scroll to the latest comments, but have not been able to see if there is finally a fix for this.

You need to start with looking elsewhere, the phone might not be the problem.  Make sure your router's software drivers are up to date. even if all your other electronics hook up to wifi the S4 is the latest hardware and some settings in your router might not be compatable. Change some router settings, like channel number. I like to use channel 11, and broadcast frequency, I use the 2 Ghz band. Stay away from auto modes if they are offered. Reset up your wifi, delete all old passwords and start fresh.  Set the phone up to the router first, then the rest of the electronics. I did all this stuff and the phone works great with the 4 year old Belkin router. I even have auto network switch setting on the S4 turned on and the phone switches between data and wifi as needed. I am using 4.3 upgrade for three weeks and have not had any issues.
    Good luck

  • I opened my Mac to upgrade it and broke something near the optical bay drive. I don't have apple care, can I bring it to geek squad? Or will Apple fix it? How much?

HELP! I broke something in my MacBook Pro by opening it up and trying to upgrade my optical bay drive to an SSD and my RAM and broke a cable near the optical bay drive. I bought it from best buy and my step dad was too stubborn when we first purchased it to buy best buy care or the apple care. Will Apple fix it? Will geek squad fix it? How much would it cost? Also my battery is starting to give out before this. I have taken the cable out that connects the battery to the motherboard and that worked, but how much would that cost to? I have a MacBook Pro mid 2012 13"

Even had stubborn stepdad bought AppleCare, it would not have covered damages caused by your mucking about inside the unit.
As we are all end-users like you and not professional computer repair peple, we can't estimate prices, especially if we don't know what broke.

  • MacBook fan running high most of the time after HDD/Hard-drive Upgrade

    Hi guys,
I've just recently upgraded my MacBook white's (MacBook5,2, 2GHZ duo core, 4GB ram) stock harddrive to a WD 2.5" black 750GB. After which, I noticed my macbook fan running at high speeds majority of the time... Even when just doing light weight stuff on it, such as surfing the net using Safari or even just leaving my computer idle after startup.
I did a clean install twice, the second was too see if it was really just a badly installed OS, but the problem still persisted, well at least till I decided to come here to type the post =P (maybe my macbook's scared about being talked about). Do note, that I did a pc migration each time.
After the upgrade, My fan usually runs at about 5000-6200 rpm, but right now as I'm typing this post, its surprisingly alot lower then what I've been experiencing. About 3000rpm-4000rpm.
As for the harddrive temperature, I noticed it runs between the 37 degree to 40 degree celsius range, so I'm guessing the hard-drive temperature sensor isn't busted, which was the problem for others from what I've read from other discussions here.
Also, when I boot my windows partition, the fan doesn't go as crazy, but it eventually will too.
Any idea what the problem could be? =s Or could it be that my MacBook can't handel 7200rpm hard drives =/ If so I'd probably downgrade to a 1TB WD blue =s
On top of that, does any one know if the 2.5" WD blue are as reliable as the 2.5" WD blacks? As I'm heistant to downgrade as I've read that the blues have a higher failure rate, and wouldn't want that happening. Oh and I'm not considering an SSD for this particular MacBook at the moment, as I may upgrade in another two years or so!
    Thank you!
    Edwin

    Hey Mende1,
Well I guess I'll try returning the drive at the end of this week then my fan seemed to have slowed down abit since the upgrade, it's sorta spinning around 3000rpm now. I'm not sure if it's gonna be the same thoughout, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't spin as much as it did when I had my old HDD on. So I'm giving it a few more day probably till the end of this week. And if the noise issue still surfaces I'll try a different hard drive! and update you on the results!
    Thanks alot Mende1!
    And hello there rauldoppler!
Well, firstly, I'm using a early 2009 MacBook white! The pre-unibody one. It's running on a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB for ram.
As for the hard-drives, I'd actually reccommend you to upgrade to an Solid State Drive if you can afford it, but if you're like me who needs more memory space then boot speed etc, I guess a HDD will be fine =) As for which brand of hard-drives, I would actually recommend WD (their black drives especially, 5 year warranty, 7200rpm speed hehe), but right now I'm having the fan problems, so I'm not too sure anymore.
I did however, do quite abit of digging around on the net and concluded that WD was a better choices amoungst the rest... But yeah the fan issue is still something I didn't expect. All in all, I guess as for which drive is better, it really depends on your needs or wants, if it's for casual internet surfing and stuff, a WD blue HDD would be fine, or a black if you want a slightly faster boot speed etc at the expense of your battery life and all. If you however value blazing fast boot times and application start up times, go for an SSD. If you need the memory space more then anything then I'd say go for a HDD again too, as it's cheaper interms of gigabite to dollar ratio. (for example, the older 500GB version of my new WD black would cost USD $43, while a Samsung 500GB SSD Pro would cost $349) Also, You could do abit of reading up on SSDs if you're interested in it There's alot of plus points to it, like ALOT, and if the price tag wasn't so huge, I would have used it for my macbook already!
Lastly, I used a WD Black 750GB for my macbook upgrade. However, I'm gonna downgrade to a WD blue 1TB this weekend if the fan doesn't settle down over time Cause well, the fan noise is really an issue for me.
    Peace out guys!
    Edwin
