10.4.4 Breaks Gimp.app

I upgraded to OS 10.4.4 this week and it seems to have broken the X Windows image manipulation program Gimp.app (v. 2.2.8, the latest, as well as 2.2.6). Gimp won't launch at all, although X11 seems to be unaffected.
The launch-progress window for Gimp shows up on screen, but remains blank. It makes no difference whether X11 is up and running first, or I simply double-click the Gimp.app icon to get both X11 and Gimp going.
Digging inside the system.log and Activity Monitor process inspector suggested a font conflict. Extract from system.log:

Indeed, the release notes to OS 10.4.4 confirm that updated fontbooks for Courier and Monaco are installed in /System/Library/Fonts. However, replacing these with the older versions and cleaning font caches with Font Finagler did not remedy the problem. Gimp.app still will not launch.

Gimp.app 2.2.8 and 2.2.6 both work fine in OS 10.4.3, which I still have installed on an external volume.

Same here. I tried both Gimp and Gimpshop and neither will launch. Here's the Console record when I double click the Gimp app:

PS--I tried Gimp again with Activity Monitor open and X11 running, went to get a glass of orange juice, selected gimp-2.2 in Acitivity Monitor (it was using 99% of the CPU), clicked the Inspect button to see if I could tell which file it was at when it choked, and suddenly the program finished with the blank window and its normal palettes appeared! I then opened a recent document, and there seemed to be no problem. Hmm. I then quit it, and relaunced--it opened completely normally!

Does iTunes Connect Christmas break mean apps won't update with new folios over Christmas?

I have 2 folios that are due to be released to my app this Christmas - both fall within the 22nd-29th window iTunes have chosen to close down.
So even though I can publish my folios through DPS over Christmas and pre-plan my app description in iTunes accordingly - before the 22nd - will those published folios not appear in my app?

How to install AIR 3.6 SDK in FB 4.7 without breaking iOS apps

i downloaded the the Air 3.6 SDK with compiler from the labs website, unpacked it on mac, put the contents into the AIRSDK folder under the com.adobe.flash.compiler... folder as specified.
relaunch FB 4.7, and it shows that the AIR SDK is now 3.6. update my name space to use 4.6, can compile and run no problem in AIR simulator, HOWEVER, the minute i try to export an IOS app, or run in IOS simulator or do anything with IOS, it craps out and i get the mess age"AIR For Apple IOS support in Flash Builder is not support", which means something is wrong, and of course it points me to instructions for FB 4.5 which are inapplicable....
this is extremely frustrating for me, because i am hitting a nasty bug in AIR 3.5 and hoping that adobe has fixed the iOS app generator bug that i am encountering in AIR 3.5 where my final apps just show a blank screen and don't run at all... yet work fine in the AIR and IOS simulators...
hoping someone else has wrestled with this. How come only a few people have had this problem, and nobody has reported a solution.
would be nice if Adobe put some effort into reducing the number of files inside FB... it is over 25,000 files, and i gotta say, that is sloppy work to have so many files and therefore thousands of dependencies. Each dependency is a link that potentially can break. Far better to use collections of files that cannot be broken.
And the update process should be no more than replacing a folder and restarting FB. I have spent 10 hours trying to get this to work, any help towards a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try the newly released SDK from official page, rather than labs? I would also suggest running FB with Java 1.6, if you have it on Java 1.7 - FB4.7 is known to yield some quirks with new java VMs.
Flash Builder is developed on top of Eclipse platform, which is basically a pluggable architecture - nothing wrong with that. Number of files do not really affect the overall application performance. In general you should not touch that, unless you really know what you doing and can manage all the dependencies on your own. I agree, though, that's is quite unfortunate that Adobe decided to hide the AIR SDK deep inside plugins, instead dragging it out to a top-level folder, where it's visible and available for change. It was possible with Flex SDK configured externally, so why not here?

Local Mandatory Profile breaks Metro Apps

I'm not sure whether this is the right section of the forum; tell me if i'm wrong. Also I apologize for my English, I'm Italian.
I want to setup one PC with a "self-resetting" user profile so that every time the user logs out everything he's done is deleted. In Windows XP I used Windows Steady State to achieve something similar.
I tried with software like Reboot Restore RX (freeware alternative to Deep Freeze), but they're not what i need (they reset all changes to the Hard Drive, which means that antiviruses and Windows itself cannot save upgrades).
I followed an howto in order to setup a Mandatory Profile on Win 8.1, because that seemed exactly what I need. My steps:
1. Create a standard user TEST. Log in that user and log out
2. Go to "Advanced System Properties" -> "User Profiles" and copy "default profile" to
C:\Users\MandatoryTEST.V2 allowing "\Everyone" to access it (with "Copy to" button)
3. Open "lusrmgr.msc" and assign C:\Users\MandatoryTEST
as Profile Path for user TEST
4. Log in TEST and start customizing things. Up to this point, everything works. Settings and files are preserved between logins, as expected
5. Rename the file NTUSER.DAT to
NTUSER.MAN in C:\Users\MandatoryTEST.V2 directory. This should "freeze" the profile
Those steps works well until i log into TEST
the second time after "mandatorizing" the profile. Default Metro apps like Weather and News suddenly disappear, and i can't access either Store nor Settings (they crash at launch). Am I doing something wrong? Or maybe there's a better way
to accomplish what I want?

In my opinion, whether temp file could use Store APP depends on Default Profile. However, default profile doesn't contains Store APP, such as, weather, finace, Bing Map, etc. If you want to use these Store App, you need to customize the default profile firstly,
make sure these app componments cotained in Default Profile.

Characters from db column break my app

Hello,
I seem to have a problem in my application where some of the db columns have single quotes or characters that break either my sql statements for the report, or the error could also steam from the report template I created.
The error I get is:

If its just a text item could select Display As Text(escape special characters) in the field attributes.
You could also use some of the built string comparison validations (ie. is alphanumeric)

Safari 4 breaks Automator apps

MBPro 10.5.7 Safari 4.0.2 Automator 2.0.3
Simple case: Apple's own "Tab Left", "Tab Right" speakable commands no longer work. They worked fine with Safari 3.x.x These files are located in ~/Library/Speech/Speakable Items/Application Speakable Items/Safari.
Other case: Every day I have a primary Safari window with several tabs. I had an Automator "Watch Me Do" app for this repetitive setup. It worked fine in Safari 3.x.x but fails in the middle with Safari 4. I have tried re-creating the "Watch Me Do" using Safari 4 but get the same (non) result.
Any suggestions?

In your second case do you mean that you are opening the same web pages every day in a series of tabs? If so that should still work. I've been doing that almost every day. Here's my current workflow that works with Safari. I am currently running 4.0.3 but it works with the earlier version as well.
1. Get Specified URLs
2. Display Webpages in Tabs.
To make this work use this version of the Display webpages in tabs action http://raoli.com/projects/automator/ Also make sure that you have tabbed browsing enabled in Safari.

Air 1.5 update breaks Air apps for Linux

The beta version of Air worked fine, but after updating to
Air 1.5, apps will no longer run or install. The installer says the
air files are damaged. I've tried uninstalling everything &
reinstalling. I don't suppose the beta version is still available?

ITunes match breaks music app on iPhone 4

I've had iTunes Match for about a month and my iPhone 4 music app has been sluggish throughout. Today when I tried to play any music on the phone it refused, I can't play anything. I pick an album, press play and nothing happens - it just stays stuck on zero minutes of the song. So I've had to turn iTunes Match off. It's very disappointing.
I should add that I have a friend who has an iPhone 4S and he has no sluggishness problems, perhaps the iPhone 4 can't handle Match?

I've just discovered my Mac has accumulated 56 crash reports for the Music App this year! I have an iPhone 4 and the iTunes Match service makes the whole phone sluggish.

[Solved] Latest GTK2 [2.20.1-1] package breaks gtk apps

Hey guys, I just did a pacman -Syu for the latest set of updates, and discovered immediately that both firefox and chromium (not sure of other apps though I suspect so) crash. After rolling back to 2.20.0-2 my system began to work again without further issue.
Should I be submitting a bug report or something? I've never really done that before, but I could do it a little later today.

the crashes occurred only on x86_64 systems when gtk applications are using icc png profile images.

10.6.5 update breaks WebKit apps - Firefox, Skype and Dropbox still work

After upgrading OS X to 10.6.5, Webkit apps such as Mail, Safari, Software Update and Chrome don't get internet access through my home high speed connection using either Airport or Ethernet. Other apps such as Firefox, Skype and Dropbox work fine. Everything works when I tether my iPhone. My other Macs that are still running 10.6.4 work fine on my home network. I have fixed permissions, updated Safari again through Software Update (tethering my phone), but I can't get it to work. Any ideas?

Moving executable jar breaks the app's save function

For the past week, I've been trying to deploy my desktop application as an executable jar file but I'm facing the following problem: Whenever I move the jar file from its original build location, my application becomes unable to write to its external files. I initially thought the problem was path related; however, when moved the app can still load data from these files.
The solution is probably simple but for some reasons I've yet to find it .
The app consists of a jar file and a folder named "files" containing text files (such as library.data) to which serialized objects are written.
I wouldn't be surprise if the problem has to do with the xml build file, but all modification I've tried so far have failed. If it is likely that it is the problem, I'll be happy to post a copy of it upon request.

Apparently, all this time, my problem was being caused by trying to run the application after moving it onto the desktop. If I move the app to another directory, such as C:\randomFolder, the app works fine.
That being solved, is their anyway to completely negate this problem and make it possible to run the app anywhere? Or is it simply impossible due to various security risks?

Save files anywhere? No, of course not.
If has nothing to do with 'security risks'. It has everything to do with security and directory/file permissions.
You will NEVER be able to write files to a directory that you do not have write permissions on. That is just the way it has worked from the beginning.
The typical solution is:
1. present a file open/save dialog to let the user choose where to read/write files.
2. for writing - check that you have write privilege on the folder before just blindly trying to write to it.
