10.4.4 broke classic

Since updating my iBook G4 to 10.4.4, I have not been able to get classic to boot. It starts out just fine, but when the progress bar gets about 1/2 inch from the end, it just stops, and stays there for an hour or two till I force quit it.
About the only thing I ever need classic for is one Hypercard stack I use for calculating one job I do. But not having it to use sure makes that job a lot more difficult.
I tried reinstalling OS9 from my wife's iMacG5 disk, but it didn't help. Starting with extensions doesn't help. Any suggestions?

Hey, Bill,
When you say you tried "starting with extensions", how did you do that? Did you make a selection in the OSX System Preferences?
I don't think the iMac G5 disk is your best choice for the iBook. Do you have the Software Restore CD for your iBook? See if your computer is listed here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86209
If it is, there is an article link (Mac OS X: How to Reinstall Mac OS 9 or Recover From a Software Restore) at the bottom of the page that could solve your issue.

I'm having a similar problem, but I do have the key and is not working anyway.
My old pc was running on windows 7 and my new one is an apple running on Lion.
My phone is an Iphone IV and I can see all the bookmarks there.
In order to sync, what I did was click on the "I don't have the device with me", I entered the key that was provided and the process finish ok. It says congratulations, etc, etc.
But the bookmarks are not there, I tried merging data and replacing data on this computer options but is the same.
    Any suggestions?

  • If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! I want classic site back

I speak on behalf of most or for a large majority of paypal users with this complaint: The new paypal site is complete garbage and utterly disappointing. For starters, this is an insult to everyone using it because it is too "elementary" and it doesn't have half of the NEEDED details as the classic site. Now, this wouldn't be a problem if we were ABLE to switch over to the classic site. Now, Paypal has disabled that option, so now everyone is forced to use this simplified, poor excuse for a site that is causing more work for everybody. I understand that new things take time, but the classic site was perfect for our business needs. Why change it? Now, we can't even conduct proper business through your new site. If you don't believe me, just go to the community board and see how many thousands of angry, frustrated, and fed-up that your customers are. There was nothing wrong with the classic site and everything is wrong with the new one. For example: you can't see 1: Which items have been shipped or not, which items need to be shipped, we have to check our email to make sure we haven't missed anyone and as our volume has grown ,this is irritating. Multi-order shipping will pick up most people, but we can't ,with one glance, see what we need to do like we used to in the classic site. We are too high-volume for this. Ebay shipping is even worse, We might have to consider endicia or stamps.com as this has wasted hours of our time and staff time. 2. Multi- order shipping is now several clicks and horizontal scrolling. Whenever you start with horizontal scrolling you are on the wrong path! 3. I can't find my credit card balance, it's very tiny, I haven't even figured out how to pay my credit card balance; what used to be right up at the top is now missing. I don't know if this is an attempt to upsell or why you would treat your customers to this horrible interface. I want to swtich back to classic permanently. This should be called a failure. Paypal needs to leave it alone, fire the people who came up with this, and start over;better yet, go back to what worked.

I completely agree. I hate it. I now use stamps.com and pay anywhere every chance I can. Sick of lining the pockets of PayPal excutives that care less about their Customers!!!!!

  • I had an iPod nano and then got a classic iPod, which then broke. So I wanted to start using my iPod nano again. I still have the same iTunes account, but when I try to sync this iPod with my iTunes nothing happens.

The music that was on this nano when I stopped using it a few years ago is still on it, and I want to replace it with other songs that I've added to my iTunes since then.

iPods (except for iPod touch) are not linked to any iTunes "account."  They are associated with your iTunes library. The account in iTunes is your Apple ID, and that is used to buy and download content from the iTunes Store.  It is not required to use an iPod.
The 1st (and 2nd) gen shuffle can only be used with one iTunes library at a time.  When you connect it, iTunes should prompt you to start using it with your iTunes library, and warn that the shuffle's existing content will be erased.  Have iTunes erase the shuffle, and it will be associated with your iTunes library going forward.  You can then add content to your shuffle.
The need for the previous owner's Apple ID and password should only come up if you are trying to transfer existing content from the shuffle to your iTunes library, AND the previous owner had content purchased from the iTunes Store.  Just cancel out of that step, if iTunes asks.

  • How can I transfer my music from an Ipod to my new MAC? My old computer broke.

My old computer broke.  I got a new MAC Book PRO.  I have all may music in an Ipod classic.  Can I recover my music to my new MAc?

Does the old hard drive still work? You can buy an external hard drive case and transfer data to your new Macbook Pro and recover your itunes libary. As far as i'm aware, Apple have not created software or allow you to move music from ipod to Mac.

  • Data on ipod classic shows up as "other".  I REFUSE to restore it cuz the music is not backed up cuz my macbook had to be restored and that wiped my itunes.  I don't have the cds anymore. How do i get my music back??

So my old ipod broke two years ago.  I got an ipod classic and synched it to my itunes library on my macbook.  Then I had problems with my macbook and had to restore it to factory settings.  I have kept my eyes open for a way to get my music backed up in my itunes again cuz I figured this ipod would probably break someday too.  Anyway now when I look at my 160g ipod classic, it says I have 0 songs, and 0 videos but 27.3g of "other".  I looked around for a solution and I tried updating my itunes and then I plugged my ipod in and it said I needed to restore it to factory settings using itunes.  I'm not gonna do that.  For the most part I have come across this problem with solutions for pc users and I have a MACBOOK.  Anyway I haven't even had my ipod hooked up to my computer for a while because I haven't added any new music and when I charge it, I just hook it up to my iphone charger.  This literally happened overnight.  I mean there is some stuff on there that is irreplaceable.  PLEASE HELP!
p.s. Dumb it down a bit for me.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

  • Ipod Classic 160GB - cannot format or restore

    Hi guys,
I have a two year old 160GB Ipod Classic, which has recently stopped working. It happened pretty much out of nowhere.
First of all, all the music disappeared from the Ipod. Then, when I connected it to the PC in order to see what's up (I'm using Windows 7); it wasn't picking it up properly - a message popped up saying that Windows needs to format the drive before it can be used. I also couldn't access any files on the drive manually through Windows Explorer.
I can't restore it using iTunes either. The Ipod just isn't picking up on iTunes altogether...  - but it's weird, because whenever I plug the Ipod in, iTunes opens itself automatically as per usual, but it's not actually registering the device, if that makes sense... All I see are my playlists and stuff, but nothing about an iPod actually being plugged in...
Also, I have noticed that in Memory Settings on the Ipod itself it says that there is 0kb free space (despite there only being about 15GB filled)...
I tried using Windows to format the device, but it didn't get anywhere - All I got was a message saying that Windows could not complete the format.
I have researched this thoroughly on the internet, but really couldn't find anything helpful.
I read something about using Windows to format Ipod devices being a bad idea, because of the FAT32 files used by such devices, so I downloaded a separate program recommended on another site called 'Fat32 Formatter', but that wasn't able to format it either.
On top of that, I now started having a problem with the hold button - basically, the Ipod is constantly locked, as if the hold button was on, but it isn't. I read about this being a fairly common issue, but still, it means I can't even try disc mode anymore.
If anyone has any ideas, that'd be greatly appreciated.

i too need help with this, i have exactly 137 videos, but it only syncs 106 of them, and then when i try to resync it, it actually took a few off! needless to say i am frustrated because i want to be able to watch all of my shows and stuff! hopefully apple will give us another fix soon (hear that apple! we gave u money now give us a working product!) any help is apreciated, oh ya, and i made a playlist with all the videos once, and then they all synced up which was fantastic! but then that one broke and i got a new one, and that doesnt work for this one for some reason... go figure, and this is all on a 160 btw, thanx

  • Hard Drive has Broke on my 30g Video - Can I ugrade to 6og / 8og?

After taking my iPod G5 Video to the Genius Bar in Shefffield, they told me that I would need to replace my hard drive, bad news, but it wont be that bad if I can buy a bigger hard drive to put in it.
Is the physical size too big?
Can I even fit a Classic iPod hard drive, meaning that I can have cover flow??
Or do I have to settle for replacing it like for like with another 30gb iPod Video hard drive?
I believe I can buy these from ebay?
Has any one else had this problem?
(This all spanned from my disk being in recovery mode and asking me to restore it, rig it up to iTunes to restore it and iPod is busy - endless circle. Bought it into the Apple store and they confirmed that the Hard Drive had broke. All happenned over night)

You'll need to find a drive that will fit your 5th gen and mate with the connector in your iPod. Go to http://www.ifixit.com to see a video/photos that will show you what is involved in putting in a new disk drive.
To get cover flow you will have to replace the screen, logic board with all firmware, and the hard drive. Not hardly worth it.
You can send it to http://www.iresq.com to be diagnosed and get an estimate of what it would cost to fix it.

I wrote this long time ago, have a read and see whether it can be soloved
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2364921&#2364921
    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
    http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote
