10.4.4 Slows Systems

Ever since uprading to 10.4.4 from 10.4.3 on my PowerBook, working in an application will suddenly cause it to freeze with the spinning rainbow. I can still work in other applications but need to force quit the frozen application.
Sometimes I cannot restart the application - it loads the menu bar but won't go any further requiring a reboot. Several other Mac users in my family have reported similar findings of system lagging causing refresh issues, slow UI response, and occassional application freezing. All since 10.4.4.
In the last few days I've rebooted my laptop every couple hours. Prior to that I would only shutdown when leaving home. I measured uptimes in days/weeks.
I rebuilt my laptop by erasing the drive and all free space, set a new partition and then installed Tiger and ran the 10.4.4 update.
It has been running better but after 10 minutes of running Microsoft Word, the same thing happened.
I've noticed that this affects Word, Excel but not Entourage which runs constantly. It also affects Swift Publisher.
It doesn't affect Safari (except slowness in loading some sites). iTunes always runs just fine as does Mail, iCal, iSync, Pages, and Keynote.
I hope that Apple releases an update soon that fixes these errors. It has been better since the rebuild but I don't like having to save a document every five minutes because the program is expected to crash.
12" PB G4 1 GHz, 768 MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I just did some further digging and found that when I got the recurring spinning beachball of death with Microsoft Word, the message at the bottom was that Word was trying to open up a printer connection.
In my case, my default printer (a shared one) was offline and not available. By deleting the printer, I was able to reopen the document and go right past the point where it had consistently stalled.
This might explain why Word, Excel, and Swift Publisher ran into problems but Entourage, iTunes and Safari did not, as they don't try to open up a printer connection until you actually tell it to print.
I'll continue to monitor this as others have had problems with Microsoft Office programs.

    Hi,
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
Note:  If the option to run these tests is not available in the Bios Menu, use the f2 diagnostic menu instead.
Can you also post back with the following details.
    1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.
    2.  The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 64bit ).
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • Disk too slow / System overload HELP?

I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this!:
I purchased a G4 PowerBook around six months ago, with Logic Pro pre-installed. Since then, I have mixed and mastered lots of music that was recorded on a previous system and imported. I was running multiple tracks simultaneously with tons of plug-ins and everything ran smoothly on my new Mac. HOWEVER, within the last month, my playback capabilities have been severely reduced. When I try to play back even two tracks simultaneously (with just one compressor or reverb), I get the error message, "Disk too slow / System overload."
My first reaction to this problem was to check my disk space and see how much room I had left: it turns out I have over one third of my harddrive space still available. I checked my memory capabilities and they seem to be more than adequate. I bought new virus protection, too, and ran scans to see if that might make a difference, but it hasn't. I don't understand why this is happening on a system so new. ANY ADVICE YOU CAN OFFER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
    Many thanks.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It is generally not a good idea to run logic on the same drive that contains your audio files and samples. Most of the data involved with logic whether it be programs or individual audio files will be saved physically all over the place on your hard drive. At a certain point the actual part of the drive that reads the data will not be able to move around to all the little different audio files it needs to access for the session on top of running the program and whatever other software that is up. It is best to save all your audio files and samples to a fast external drive (7200rpm at least) otherworldcomputing.com has great drives that have high quality cases and the option to put any drive they have in stock into the case. (i would recommend seagate) If you are going to continue running your entire sessions off the internal drive then you need to keep up with your basic mac housekeeping. You should repair your permissions 2 times a month (use disk utility) You should buy a good directory repair program such as disk warrior. The directory is exactly what it sounds like. It keeps track of where everything is on the computer. If your directory is corrupt the computer will have to do an extra manual search to find what its looking for. If your directory is healthy your computer will make a straight shot to the file you are looking for.

  • Installed OS X Maverick on Macs...having problems slower system and apps freezing

I installed and downloaded OS X Maverick last week and installed it in relatively new Macbook Pro and IMac...both purchased last year...have experienced applications freezing, slower start up time several times, once was unable to start my Macbook Pro...had to reboot..and slower system response...anyone else experiencing the same?

Checked to see how much space is available ??
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
As for slow startup, delete all apps in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Same for HD > Library > StartupItems
Anti virus software can slow your Macs down if installed.

  • Best IDE for slow system

what is the good IDE with drag and drop interface for slow system running on P3 500mhz ,ram256

I said relatively svelte. If Eclipse seemed slow, you'd shoot yourself in the head after trying to use TogetherSoft or TogetherJ or whatever the hell it's called. At one place I worked, where they wanted us all to use that IDE, I used to start the thing up, then leave to get a cup of coffee. I mean, I went downstairs, waited in line at the Starbucks, etc., and when I got back it still wasn't even finished starting up.
Later I learned that they didn't even check what IDEs we were using, so I just used vi. I also tried using Eclipse and it ran OK but I prefer vi.
I tend not to use IDEs much but when I've used Eclipse, it's always been pretty good, and it was never on the latest and greatest hardware.
So try it, and if it doesn't seem fast enough, use something else. I suggest vi.

  • DISC TOO SLOW/SYSTEM OVERLOAD

I have read a couple of other posts about this issue and tried their remedies with no success. Has anyone been able to figure this out or have any other remedies? This is getting bad. I play bacy my arrangement and keep getting this Disc too slow/system overload error. It just "came on" out of nowhere. Someone stated about possibly an update in itunes?????? Is there a way to 'uninstall" an update once you have installed it and go back to a previous version? Please help. This is annoying.
    Tim

    What can I say?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3161
Also: install MenuMeters http://www.pure-mac.com/diag.html#mainmenu to keep an eye on other activities (esp. +memory swapping+ ) of your Mac/OS X (possibly disrupting Logic).
    In Logic, before playback:
Disable all inputs on audio tracks.
    Freeze/BIP your SI tracks.
Keep an audio- or aux track selected (or: avoid having a Softw Instrument track selected).
    And:
    Blame the dog.
    regards, Erik.

  • SLOW system due to Yosemite

My Mac is from 2011, so I know it's 3.5 years old. However, it was running pretty good overall until I downloaded Yosemite. Now it is horrible. The start up time is ridiculously slow; my Safari screen freezes a lot and will just give me the spinning circle until I let it stop; and I am told every time I start up my computer that it needs to update. I just don't get it. I was told by an Apple store employee that even though my Mac is 3.5 years old, it should handle Yosemite perfectly fine. Has anyone else been having trouble with Yosemite? If yes, what have you done about it? The closest Apply store to me is 4-6 hours away, depending on which I would choose to go to. I can't justify driving that long just to get my computer checked.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Slow System

For no apparent reason, my Mac desktop has started running slow. Slow response to everything. Of course, I am spoiled and am used to blazing speed. Is there anything I can do to clean things up a little? Nothing has changed on the machine to speak of.

Launch the Activity Monitor utility. Click on the "CPU" tab in the lower part of the screen. If the "% Idle" value is small, set the list at the top to "All Processes", click on the "CPU" column heading in the upper part of the window until the highest CPU users are at the top of the list, and see which process(es) is comsuming CPU time. If the "% Idle" value is fairly low (<30%), click on the "System Memory" tab in the lower part of the screen. If the value for "Page outs" is higher than a few MB, the performance of your computer might benefit from more RAM.

  • Slow system to open.

The program used to run perfectly fine, and quickly, at that. Recently it takes about 5 minutes to open a single page. I know the problem is not with my system because everything else runs fine, and Internet Explorer opens up immediately. What caused this unexpected delay in Firefox? I tried uninstalling then re-installing it to fix the problem but that didn't help.
The only thing i can think of is that when i would shut of my laptop but wanted the sites i was using to be there when i turned my system back off, i would force shut down and firefox would close so that when i opened it again next time i could "restore session" to get those sites back to where i was.
however i stopped forcing shut down and 'restoring session' a little while ago, but the slowness still persists in even opening up a single page.

  • Slow System all of a sudden

I recently reinstalled Arch, and everything was going great. My system seemed to be very snappy, and I was quite happy. Now, after a reboot, things have slowed down by a ton. My computer is an AMD 2.6 GHz dual core with 2 gigs of ram. However, gmrun now takes at least 3 seconds to load. 3 seconds isn't a long time I suppose, but for such a small program, it should be almost instant, especially since it takes about the same amount of time even when another instance is running. All other programs are starting a lot slower then they initially did.
The last thing I did was configure openntpd, and add it to rc.conf. I can't imagine this causing the problem. Running htop shows nothing peculiar.
    Any suggestions?
EDIT: A quick test leads me to believe that gmrun takes almost the same time to load as firefox. That shouldn't be...

    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost rain
    192.168.1.150 rain.storm.com rain

EDIT: Another test, urxvt takes about 4 seconds to load, yet running Quake 3 from the terminal almost loads instantly.

  • Slow system!!!  Lots of pinwheeling!  EtreCheck attached

In the last 6 months my iMac performance has completely tanked.
In that time, I have had to replace the internal hard dive (done at Apple store with supported drive) and have upgraded to 10.10.
I have installed Memory Clean to see if I can identify the source of my issues.  It has been interesting to watch how quickly the system eats of the available memory (16GB)
Also, since the hard drive replacement the machine is noisier than it was before.  You can hear the drive thrashing...maybe that is just a characteristic of this particular drive or not.
I have installed and run EtreCheck in hopes of getting some answers from the Community.

    Step 1.
    Do not use memory clean!
Memory does not get 'dirty' the OS is designed to use all the RAM. If you want to see lots of free RAM use an old OS that didn't use the resources correctly.
Installing 16GB of RAM & only ever using 8GB is a waste.
OS X will attempt to cache frequently accessed data in RAM & then purge it when other processes request RAM. Memory clean simply purges RAM before it is due, forcing the OS to reload it or recalculate the data.
This explains how 10.9 changed how RAM is used, it applies to 10.10 too…
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/17/#compressed-memory
Please delete memory clean, at the very least stop using it.
    Step 2.
Backup before making any changes, Time Machine IS OK, but a bootable clone is better, several backups are better than 1, especially since you are tweaking Time Machine's schedule - do a manual backup from the menu to be sure.
If you remove anything in the next steps please look for uninstallers - apps need to be removed correctly. If you can't find one, look for removal instructions on the developers site and then look here or ask here.
    Step 3.
Is Backblaze up to date? bztransmit is it's process and it is using a fair amount of RAM.
Search here for reports about Backblaze compatibility - I vaguely remember reports of issues on 10.10, but I can't remember if it was another backup service on 10.10 this is the a search for recent backblaze posts…
    https://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?type=discussion&showAnsweredFirst=true &q=backblaze&after=quarter
Remove it for a few days to see if it gets better then reinstall & see if it gets worse again.
Is Sophos AV up to date? If not update it.
You could remove it to see if the OS is better. It is running system level code (kernel extensions & background jobs). It may be the reason for some slowness - try a few days without it. There are other free AV tools like http://ClamXAV.com many users will tell you Mac's don't need AV, which is true (until a virus is found for Macs). You may want to scan so that you are not spreading Windows viruses if you work with a lot of Windows users.
You may find that Backblaze or Norton are responsible for the disk thrashing, they both can check the entire disk for new files. The OS is meant to inform them of the latest changes but sometimes they default back to the old way (scan the entire disk file by file - e.g. thrash).
Flash is out of date - either remove it (& use Chrome which has Flash built in) or update it.
Also check the other internet plug-ins listed in the report.
Check the extension is up to date in Safari's Preferences.
Safari has crashed recently, so try running without the extension enabled to see if it happens without it.
    Step 4.
Boot holding cmd+R. Recovery mode should startup (assuming you have a recovery partition).
Select Disk Utility in the list of options
In Disk Utility select the 'boot disk' this is usually the item above 'Macintosh HD'.
    Select the 'First Aid' tab
Repair any disk damage that is reported via 'verify'.
Then select The 'Macintosh HD' & verify the volume, repair any damage and repair the permissions if you want.
NOTE: permissions repair will output many errors that are meaningless…
Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore - Apple Support
    Step 5.
Your disk is getting rather full.
As a spinning disk fills up it starts to perform slower. It may not be an issue for you, however if you want maximum speed consider moving unused data onto other disks. It is explained at…

  • Slow system performance...

Hey guys, i recently installed Arch Linux via my 0.7.2 CD.  I then did a full system upgrade, up to the 2.6.19 kernel, boots fine, followed the new kernel instructions.. however it just seems like my overall system performance is SLOOWW.  Keep in mind, i have installed Arch on this computer when 0.7.2 first came out, and it ran perfectly fine, everything ran fast.  However now since i did a fresh install, upgraded to the latest, things seem slow.
i have installed xorg as well as gnome, including the nvidia drivers.  When ever i type startx, it takes more then a few seconds for anything to happen after the command has been entered, before it would be VERY snappy.  Gnome seems to take longer to load as well.  When i launch xterm from within gnome, it takes a while for the xterm window to show, this includes any other windows.  When i move windows around overtop of firefox, it seems alot of ghosting is happening, alot of trailling over the desktop when the window is being dragged overtop another window.  I checked to see if Nvidia drivers are being loaded which they are.  a glxtest reports back a 1500fps + as well as showing nvidia corporation in the glxinfo....
This is a fresh BASE install, upgraded to the current, then Xorg and gnome installed.  Top shows no high cpu spikes and i cant figure out why suddenly, application loading seems to be slow...
P.S also, with all of this, accessing webpages seem very slow as well....this includes Pinging an IP address...

well, i added that in, startx as well as gnome + application seem to load as they should now, if that was the reason thanks for telling me about that.
However my internet is still very very slow.  Booting into Windows XP i can confirm its not my internet connection, no lag in XP, however in Arch, seems very slow.  If its any help, im using the sundance driver
actually, now that applications seem to be loading as they should, my internet connection probebly can be asked in the network section?

  • Slow system while printing PDF's

when printing PDF's to any of several printers (letter or tabloid sizes)the system response slows to an unbearable crawl lots of spinning beach balls come and go. the only system function that does not appear to be affected is the mouse movement, mouse clicks however are affected. I can't even change windows let alone apps without multiple minutes of delayed reactions. I used activity monitor to find "PrintJobMgr" seems to be using up to 100% of cpu resources and over 1GB of virtual memory at some times during the print process. I understand that PDF's are slow to print but that is not my problem as the print speed seems okay, just while printing I can't do anything else.
Can anyone help or have same experience?

What happens if you drag several PDFs right to the Printer's Icon or Printers Window without using Acrobat?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Slow system when 1TB Store.E USB drive connected

    HI,
    I bought a 1TB Store.E USB drive.
After I installed the drive the whole system reacts very slow when the drive is access after not being use for a while.
Is there a standby modus and if yes, can it be switched off?
    Regards
    Heinz

    Hi
    >After I installed the drive the whole system reacts very slow when the drive is access after not being use for a while.
I think this happens because the 1TB external HDD needs to be scanned and indexed by system after the HDD has not been used for a while
You can try to check the Win 7 power options.
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD12017W0001R01.htm
I would recommend to disable the power saving option for the USB ports.
    Maybe this helps

  • Slow System (includes Etrecheck...)

    Problem description:
My system processing seems slow - even with nearly no apps open.
I still have almost 20Gb of HD space, I’m not syncing to time machine, and it’s not internet connectivity that’s affected or affecting this degradation in performance.
I’m not running torrent software or anything like that, but the system itself is crazy laggy.
    What's to be done?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
