10.4.4 upgrade fouled screen savers, etc.

Dot mac recommended that to fix a problem with bookmarks sync I upgrade to 10.4.4 (from 10.4.3) and reset bookmarks. I did it and it fixed the problem, however now I have screen savers that are "jerky" at best and my Mackiev 3D Weather Globe and Atlas bearly works at all. I put 10.4.4 on my imac and wisely did not put it on my powerbook so I have a comparison between the two systems which are virtually identical except for the new upgrade. Everything still works on the power book with 10.4.3. Any suggestions to fix the problems would be appreciated.

Robert, which screensavers are jerky now? If they are third party screensavers, it is the responsibility of the third party to make the screensaver work with the Mac OS. Before you updated to 10.4.4, did you Verify Disk or Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility?

You change the background and screen savers in the System Preferences Desktop & Screen Saver preference panes. Just click System Preferences in your dock.
In order to view your pictures in Front Row, you need to import them all to iPhoto.

  • How to load my pictures as screen savers

please forgive my ignorance but I totally do not understand what this cloud or iCloud is but i understand one must use it t o load one's own pictures onto Apple TV to use as screen savers.

You would need to upgrade your Mac to OS X Mavericks and purchase iPhoto '11 from the Mac App store (unless you already have it).  Then you would have to create an iCloud account on your Mac by going to System Preferences>iCloud and signing in with your Apple ID, then check Photos.  Then you can add your photos to your photo stream using iPhoto as explained here: http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#pht7aaade98.  Once the photos are added to your photo stream, you can sign into your iCloud account on your Apple TV (in Settings>iCloud) and be able to access your photo stream photos for your screen saver (in Settings>Screen Saver>Photos>iCloud Photos>My Photo Stream).
You might also want to consider waiting until OS X Yosemite is released later this year.  It will include a new built-in Photos app and iCloud will include a new iCloud Photo Library feature (see https://www.apple.com/icloud/preview/).  These are likely to supersede the need to purchase and use iPhoto to accomplish this.

  • "Ken Burns" and other photo screen savers scramble my display

I have a three-display Mac Pro which I have just upgraded to Mavericks.   My rightmost display is a Dell P2012H rotated 90º, and every time a photo-based screen saver activates, that display gets scrambled.  While the screen saver is running it looks like one of those tile-shifting puzzles being randomized, except instead of a single image it's a combination of the desktop and whatever screensaver image was being displayed.  When the screensaver deactivates, the display stays in whatever state it was last in while the screen saver was running, making that display completely useless.  In order to reset it I have to switch resolutions and then switch back.
If I un-rotate the display, or use a non-photo screen saver (such as Flurry) then everything's fine.
It looks like the problem may be display-driver specific, as I've tried rotating one of my other displays (A Samsung SyncMaster) and that does not experience the same problem.
This looks like a bug in the screen savers or in the display rotation code.  Anyone else see this?  I can probably live without the photo screen savers, but I'm wondering if I'm going to run into any other screen rotation bugs in Mavericks.

“...not use Ken Burns with vertically oriented photos...” -- WHAT!?!?!?!?!?! You’re kidding, right?
...I’m sorry, but personally, after Apple made the Ken Burn Effect completely USELESS for “portrait” oriented photos, I was both astonished and outraged, and have been hoping for a TRUE fix ever since. Sure, for video, later versions of iMovie do some nice things, but why on earth would Apple all of a sudden have made the Ken Burn Effect viable for only half of my photographs?!? I’ve created several DVD slideshows, most of them containing 80-90% still photos, and I am insulted by the suggestion that “padding” photographs (adding black to the sides of every “portrait” photo), via Automator or not, is the answer -- that is utter ridiculousness -- that feature should never have been removed in the first place!!! (ADD features Apple, don’t REMOVE them!!!) The only thing that would entice me to upgrade to iLife 11 would be having this simple, but to me, absolutely necessary functionality back.
...So, can you tell me if the Ken Burns Effect has been fixed in the latest iLife 11 version of iMovie to treat ALL photos equally?

  • I want to delete all firefox screen savers

They are black and white no colours except the fox and I do not want aNY of them I have tried going to the folder - roaming mozilla firefox and deleting - but thaT DOES NOT WORK - i SET UP wINDOWS and they are what I want - windows themes are real pictures
So how do I get rid of all firefox screen savers that I do not use or want -
There are other browsers you know

hello, firefox doesn't include any screensavers... from your system details it looks like there is quite a bunch of possibly unwanted adware programs present on your system. maybe one of them is causing those issues.
please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • 64-bit screen savers won't run if 32-bit versions were previously installed

I've run into this a few times now. If I try to install, say, the 64-bit version of the screen saver "Euphoria" (version 10.2 - http://s.sudre.free.fr/Software.html), I get the same message as if I were trying to run the older 32-bit verion (You cannot use the Euphoria screen saver ... etc).
Yet if I try to download and run a 64-bit version of a screen saver I previously did not have (e.g., "Flux," "Fireflies" from the same site), then it runs fine. On one screen saver ("Anemona" - http://uri.cat/software/Anemona/) I ran into the problem, but I managed to get it to work by altering its name before installing it, but for "Euphoria" and others this did not work. I've tried deleting the old version first, but that didn't work.
Has anyone else run into this? Does 10.6 keep track of these files on a "rejection" list so that installing newer versions can still prompt rejection?
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Probably you were seeing a conflict between a version of the screen saver in "/Library/Screen Savers" and the new on in your personal "~/Library/Screen Savers"
Best to delete a screensaver (right click context menu in screen saver preferences) before reinstalling it.

  • Screen savers failing one by one

I usually use the "word of the day" screen saver. It worked great. Then the other day I found it would just come up blank. Just a black screen. Everything else worked as expected - I could move the mouse or hit a key to dismiss the screen saver, launch it by moving the mouse to one of the hot corners, etc.
So I switched to the iTunes album art screen saver. That worked great for a week or so. Now it claims I don't have any artwork. But I go to iTunes and there's all my album art. And iTunes is working great.
So I have two questions: 1) What screen saver should I break next? 2) I'd really like to have one of the old screen savers back. How do I make them work again?
    Thanks for your help.

The plot thickens as now my iPod Touch 3G is doing the same thing. Other area networks appear but neither of our home networks do. I've found many references to this phenomenon online but no fixes. I've now tried turning off all security. None of our networks have ever been closed. We're really desperate for help here. Thank you for your kind consideration.

  • Screen savers

"Tiger" had a lovely Beach slide show that's not present in Mtn Lion.  The two OS versions store Screen Saver pieces in different places.
I found what appears to be a single file in Tiger for "Beach" slide show & stored it in the Mtn Lion system (in the user/Pictures ƒ), telling System Preferences where to find that file, & now I have the old screen saver slide show I liked.
Mtn Lion stores individual images in /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Default Collections ƒ, with individual image folders named National Geographic, Aerial, Cosmos & Nature Patterns.  One has the option to choose one of these from a drop-down menu on the right side of System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Savers -> Screen Savers, OR to choose a folder/file through another choice & a finder window.
Mtn Lion seems to have identical files screen saver slide show image files, branching at "Versions" ƒ, but in the alias folder "Current" (all else seems identical), AND at the same level as "Versions" ƒ in an alias folder named "Resources".  No clue why these folders/files appear 3 times.
    The Tiger version was Beach.slideSaver (v1.1), & that's what's now in the user/Pictures ƒ (9.8MB)
But I've also found a v1.3 of that same file in /System/Library/Screen Savers (5.6MB), but I'm not able to *select* that file with System Preferences.  As a matter of fact, the various screen savers from Tiger appear in that Mtn Lion folder but newer versions (plus a couple more selections).
    Very confusing!!!
Everything appears to be working, so I don't think I did anything wrong, but perhaps not as elegantly as I could have.  Any feedback?
Any idea why there are discrepancies between the versions, & why I can't choose the newer versions?  I assume the larger file holds more images.
Why aren't the individual images stored like in the new "National Geographic" slide show?  Or is this something a mere user shouldn't ask?  I'm happy I get to add a floating clock to the screen saver slideshow....

There are no screensavers for the BlackBerry as the screen turns off to save battery life. You can get themes, wallpapers, ringtones, etc. Usually you can get a link to install them over the air or in required you can use Application Loader within Desktop Manager to load software onto the device.

  • Screen savers fail on launch

My screen savers fail when they try to launch. I only have the standard screen savers installed. They try to launch when they are supposed to (on hot corners, Test button, etc.), but then fail. The way it fails is that the screen goes black and then whichever screen saver I've selected is displayed for less than one second. Then the initial screen then displays.

From avalokita: I found my problem. My rf mouse is evidently damaged (yep, I musta dropped it one time too many), and it was apparently sending spontaneous messages to the macbook and keeping it awake. When I unplugged the rf transceiver from the usb port, the problem went away. Gotta geta new mouse.

  • No qtz files in Screen Savers folder

I recently got a new MacBook Pro and installed XCode 4 in it. However, it surprisingly doesn't have any qtz files in '/Users/Anand/Library/Compositions/' or '/Users/Anand/Library/Screen Savers/' folder.
What may be the reason for it. I also used Migration Assitant to transfer just my documents from my previous MacBook.

    .xsession .xinitrc
I need these so that when I install xfce i can boot up on it immidiatly.
My home folder now has .bashrc and .bash_profile. Is that all there is on a fresh install?
Well, a fresh (Core) install does not include X11 so obviously .xsession and .xinitrc do not exist in /etc/skel.  If you create your user after you have installed the xorg group then adduser will copy across the .xinit and .xsession files.  Alternatively you can copy these manually if you install xorg afer you have created your user.

  • Windows Screen savers on Leopard

    Hi Guys,
I really liked some of Windows XP screen savers. Now that I have been running on Leopard for a year now, I am wondering if the same screen savers are available in a Mac format? Such as the pipes, flower box, etc... Do they make these screen savers for Leopard?
    Thanks.

  • Use Aperture for Screen Savers

Not sure what happened.  I completely lost my choice of using my Aperture Library for Screen Savers.  I'm not even given the option anymore.  Is there anyone out there who knows why this might be?  Yesterday my screen saver was showing my photos from Aperture; today it shows National Geographic photos.

I'm having the exact same issue.... but I'm not getting iphoto or Aperture options. I just upgraded to Mavericks 2 days prior and before I did the upgrade I was using a folder from my aperture library.
Any advice... or is this something that takes time to load and I just have to give is some time... as in hours or days as my aperture library is large??
    Thanks

  • No Screen Savers:

This Machine does not have any screen savers, or I just don't know how to find any and set one...
I remember an elementary school teacher from the 90s set up a mac lab...I immagine they have older Mac Classic Operating Systems...and remember they all had numerous screen savers (with Sound Effects) and they rotated (a different one came up each time a machine went idle)
Is there any way I can reinstall the screen savers?

    Hi, In-Correct -
Here's some other sources for screensavers -
Screen Gear - Screen Saver, Image Displayer
    MacScreenSavers.com - Free screen savers
    VersionTracker: Screen Savers
    Free Macintosh: Apple Screen Savers
    Pure Mac: Screen Savers
(I have not tested those links in quite some time, so one or more may no longer work)
Not all screensavers work the same nor have the same feature sets, so you may need to test a few before you find one you like. Be sure to remove or otherwise disable a screensaver before adding in a new one - no sense in having two or more sets of software competing; such can cause the OS to crash.
Note - you may be recalling the After Dark screensaver suite, commonly used prior to OS 9. It did not survive the upgrades in OS 9, and will not run as-is in OS 9. As I recall there were one or more 3rd-party screensavers which purported to be able to use the After Dark modules in OS 9; I have no idea whether their claims were valid.

  • Looking for a way to have computer turn of screen router etc.

I have my computer set to turn of in the evening (and turn on again in the morning) and would like it to turn of, and on, the screen router etc.  In the olden days the Mac had a extra port to supply the screen with power.  Allas no longer has it such cleverness.  Is there a way anybody knows of how to do this?
I have used a Master Slave extension, but this unreliable.  First of all I now have had 3 in 4 years as they seem to break within the first year.  Secondly they eat a fair bit of electricity, so partly defeating the purpose of switching of to save electricity.  Thirdly they sometimes just refuse to work, till you disconnect them and reconnect.
I look forward to hear any suggestions.

I am sure someone out there has solved this, any body have a hint how to do this?  Home-automation maybe?
