10.4.5 update caused  "shared library error:

shared library error: "?<Microsoft Excel><Apple;Carbon;Multimedia><CFMPriv_QuickTime>"
This error occurs whenever I try opening any microsoft office program as well as a similar error when I try opening a photo program I have. This started the minute I updated. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there a way to undo the last update?

To reinstall a prior version, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25404. However, before doing that, move the Microsoft stuff from yoor Users folder to desktop (such as prefs and Microsoft Users Data}, delete MS Office, and reinstall it.

  • Shared Library Error after software update

After a software update check, I downloaded all recommendations which were the following: Java for Mac OS X 10.4 Release 5, iTunes 7.1, iPhoto Update 6.0.6, Security Update 2006-008 (PPC) 1.0, and Mac OS X Update (PPC) 10.4.9.
But upon restarting, I get 2 popup windows entitled Application Launch Failure. The first says: The application "(null)" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "5>HP Communications><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CarbonSound>". The second reads: The application "EEventManager" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "1<EEventManager><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CarbonSound>". I also get one when I try to launch AOL from the desktop. It also has the string with CarbonSound in it.
I tried reinstalling all of the updates and the Security update didn't work at all - which didn't seem to matter since it was an older version (I think??). I then reinstalled the OS update again, but this time I did the combo version. Still no luck. I looked into CarbonSound, but I haven't found anything current or relevant. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • Application Launch Failures after Update: shared library error

Soon after installing the latest Security and Operating System Updates, I discovered that I could no longer run Microsoft Office. I get the following error message when attempting to open any of the components: Application Launch Failure The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "3<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CommonPanels>" I have tried reinstalling the updates but it hasn't helped. I can't reinstall Office because the same error message comes up when I try to open the Microsoft installer. Can anyone help? I'm stuck. Thanks.

    Again, thanks.
It's somewhat confusing. The folder /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CommonPanels. framework
contains 3 items, a gray screen marked Common Panels with a small arrow pointing to the lower left edge, a folder marked Versions (which holds folders marked A and Current), a folder marked Current (which has a small arrow pointing to the lower left edge and holds a gray screen marked Common Panels and a folder marked Resources) and a folder marked A (which also contains a gray screen marked Common Panels and a folder marked Resources. When I click the gray screen marked Common Panels, I get a message that there is no default application specified to open the document "CommonPanels".
I'm not sure what all that means. Are there too many Common Panel screens? Does the small arrow have any significance? I've also discovered that, in addition to not being able to run Office, I can't install any new applications (same CarbonLib error message). If you think I need to archive and install the System, I can try to do so.

  • Shared Library Errors after updates

  • Help with Shared Library Errors?

I am getting a Shared Library Error (The application "APP NAME HERE" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "1<APP NAME HERE><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_PrintCore>") whenever I try to open a non-Mac application (Adobe or Microsoft, basically). And when I try to print, I cannot adjust anything in the Page Setup, else the application crashes.
Problems began right after a Software Update: to 10.4.8 (and iTunes to 7.0.1).
Any thoughts? I have seen references here and elsewhere to various shared library error issues, with solutions that have worked for some people sometimes, ranging from dowloading the newest version of Quicktime to archiving everything and reinstalling the system software.

I saw you had posted in the other topic and were
advised to start a new one. But did you try any of
    the other approaches?
Yes. I've been trying simpler things first, such as removing certain caches from my Library.
    It helps to be
more specific about the particular applications.
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and In Design 2.0.2. Microsoft Word 11.0 and Excel 11.0 are the ones that give me the shared library error. At the same time (since the upgrade to OS 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1), I have been having trouble with my printer, a Canon i850 (printer software quits with each printing, although the printer does print the item; and trying to adjust Page Setup causes whatever application I'm in to crash).
    Did you look at Yo
u receive a "Shared library" error message when you
start Office for Mac programs for example?
Not until you suggested it. Thanks. It has some of the same suggestions, though — no new ones. I've been trying to avoid the archive/install option, but I guess I'm headed that way.
You say you have iTunes 7.0.1, what version of
    Quicktime do you have?
    QuickTime Player 7.1.3.
Unfortunately there doesn't (as yet) seem to be a
single fix for all these errors. We'll just have to
    keep trying!
    That's the sense I'm getting.
Thank you for your attemps to help.

  • Shared Library Error-CarbonLib

OK, I'll calm down a little while writing this....Was running fine in 10.3.3 until using Apple@#$%*&!! updater to 10.3.9.. Now every application I try to launch gives me a Shared Library Error-CarbonLib message..Also, I now cannot launch Classic. I get an error dialog that says that "Classic is unable to update files in "System Folder". Seems to me that Apple caused these problems, but wants me to pay them for help solving them!

    Hi Pixelgun,
Did you use the 10.3.9 Combo Updater or did you use Softwate Update and try to update more than one item at a time?

  • Please help! Shared Library Error... no applications will open!

    Hi. Major issues!!
My computer was unplugged for 2 weeks (renovations). When I set it up in my new office, none of my applications would open! (Microsoft, Adobe, AOL, etc...) Safari is working.
    I get this error message:
The application "Photoshop" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "5<application><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
    "8<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
The application "AOL" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
    "9<AOL (Bootstrap)><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
The application "AppleWorks" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "4<AppleWorks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
    Here's what I've tried...
I have tried to install combo update 10.3.9. .. didn't work.
My computer was purchased in 2004... just moved to a new house... do not know where my installation dvd is... so to reboot on that is not an option.
I tried disk repair permissions... didn't work!
I opened my log console to view the crash logs... and it appears a lot has crashed... but I can not understand what any of it means!?!
Can anyone help or offer some advice?
Can anyone understand a crash log if I post it?
Please help!?! Taking an online masters course and this is a major dilemma!
    Thanks,
    Lindsay

    Hi Lindsay,
"Can I get one from a mac store? Does it have to be the original one I used when I purchased my mac?"
No, you can no longer purchase 10.3 Panther disks from Apple Stores, online or otherwise. You may however, be able to purchase replacement disks for your computer (if Mac OS 10.3 were the original install disks that came with your mac) by calling Apple and explaining and having the serial number ready of the computer.
If your installation of 10.3 was an upgrade you can purchase retail copies of 10.3 disks online from many resellers, such as on ebay or sites such as FastMac, but be sure to purchase a retail box set and not upgrade or machine specific disks.
Did you perform all of the steps that Kappy steered you to in Dr. Smoke's FAQ first and your only option left is the Archive and Install?

  • Shared Library Error!

I was working in Adobe Illustrator when a transparent grey screen appeared and siad you need to restart your computer. After restarting I launched Illustrator again and I got this message.
    Application Launch Failure
"The Application Illustrator could not be launched because of a shared library error"
I had this happen while using Photoshop a couple of weeks ago too! Could someone please tell me what this means and how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Hi-
First off, the "gray screen" is a kernel panic.
A kernel panic, along with the "shared library" error, may mean that you are having problems on the harddrive. Another possibility is RAM error.
First, you need to eliminate suspects by disconnecting all but your monitor, Apple keyboard, and mouse.
Then, check your harddrive directory while booted to the OS X install disc. Use Disk Utility to "Repair Disk".
It will also be worthwhile to download Rember and test your RAM.
Take these initial steps toward isolating the problem. The cause may be elsewhere, but, we need to eliminate common suspects.

  • "Shared library error" message

Does anyone know what this is?
The application "Transport Monitor" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
    8 <Transport Monitor> <Transport Monitor> <HotSyncLib.PPC> "
It appeared on startup after performing an archive and reinstall of Tiger. At the same time, Firefox became completely unstable, and other programs started crashing too. I had an idea that perhaps the computer's files didn't like that I was now at 10.4.4 instead of 10.4.11, so last night I did all my system updates. Everything's now more stable; I haven't run it for long but I've now been in Firefox for almost 15 minutes! Still, the above message appears on startup.

<<sigh>> I ran the Migration Assistant today, and while all my third-party programs came over, my settings and whatnot didn't (e.g. Firefox was the basic program, without all my add-ons, bookmarks, etc.; when I looked in Application Support there was no Firefox support folder; same with Quicken, Palm, etc.). I started fooling around and somehow mucked things up--suddenly the computer was hiccuping, and sometimes the mouse and keyboard stopped working (I could get the cursor to move with the mouse but it wouldn't select or open anything. And I couldn't get my LaCie to show up in the Finder. So now I'm performing an erase/install and will run the upgrades.
The question is, did I do something wrong with Migration assistant? BDA, when you used it, did it transfer your preferences and application support stuff for third party programs? Or did you have to go back and rescue the files? It occurs to me that perhaps the assistant pulled info from another place in the computer. If I go to the Library folder in the Macintosh Hard Drive, Firefox isn't in the Applications Support folder; but if I go to Library in my home folder it's there. Isn't that where the Assistant should be looking?
And another (sillier) question: if I 'migrate' manually, do I just drag and drop the eMac folder onto the new iMac folder if the names are the same (e.g. iTunes, Internet Plugins, etc.)?
Boy, am I glad you guys are here...

  • "Shared library error" prevents app launch

Did the upgrade to 10.4.10 this morning, via the Software Update panel. Upon restart, attempts to launch Microsoft Word / Excel or FileMaker results in:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "Word" could not be launched bceause of a shared library error: "2 <Microsoft Word> <CarbonLib> <CFMPriv_CarbonSound> "
I'm out of my depth here. I've repaired permissions, but no dice. Any advice?
(Many other apps - browsers & email, Adobe, Macromedia, Digidesign - launch fine.)

Well, this has blown into a bit of a 'situation,' I'm afraid, mostly because I don't have my 10.4 DVD. (Seems I left it at the office when I left some months ago. They can FedEx it to me, but as they're closed Wednesday, I won't get started until Friday.) The only system disc I have is my 10.1.3 installer, and I suspect I'll open several new cans of worms if I jump that far backward.
The G5 now won't boot at all. I can start it in FireWire target mode from the G4, and can see all the data on my hard drives. When it's turned on by itself, the panel light and the fans all look and sound the way they should, but I get to a screen that reads Mac OS X and a progress bar that never progresses – i.e. a white strip that goes nowhere.
I also can boot the G5 into Terminal (or whatever you call it when I open with Opt + Cmd + O + F), but don't know my way around it. Didn't do anything there except remove the CD.
A friend tried posting me a copy of his 10.4 disc 1 for me to use, but it seems the Apple folks knew we'd think of that. Whatever the technology, I can mount it but can't boot from it. (Or maybe that's Toast? I see that their help page reads, "You cannot make a bootable Mac Volume disc.")
Repaired & Verified permissions on the G5 before it locked me out. Looking at it from the G4 confirms that it at least thinks that 10.4.10 was successfully installed; I'm now downloading the 10.4.10 combo update. (I hadn't realized until I was already typing this that I should try running it on the G5's system drive, from the G4.)
I'm just posting this in case someone who's been willing to read this far spots some magic bullet that I'm missing.

  • Shared library error FATCarbon 1.5

    shared library error <FATCarbon 1.5>
Started getting this message recently. Firefox died first then other apps have now followed. I have run all diagnostic software I own and no joy. Any suggestions?

Hi there, not sure what all you've tried, but...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, then try reallpying the big combo update...
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html
    Repair Permissions afterwords, reboot.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

  • Application launch failure - Shared Library Error

I'm getting a "shared library error" when I try to launch nearly all of my applications..Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Final Cut, etc.. The error reads:
The application "Excel" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "?<Microsoft Excel><Apple;Carbon;Multimedia><CFMPriv_QuickTime>"
I ran disk utility and it said 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error. i went & bought Disk Warrior & ran it, but it did not fix the problem. Anything I can do other than Zeroing out the hard drive & re-installing the OS?
Oh, and i tried to re-install some of the apps, but that didn't work either.

You can try to reinstall Mac OS 10.4.8 combo update Intel or PPC.
Anyway, this is symptomatic of hard drive failure and needs repair (changing the hard drive).

  • Shared library errors!!!!

    Hello
I just did a software update for Ipod updater, quick time and 10.4.7. I went away from machine and when I came back I had an error message, unfortunately I dont recal exactly what it said but it was along lines of "10.4.7 failed to install and has been moved to trash."
Then I tried to use various applications and I am getting the following dialogue for many of them:
"The application "XYZ" could not be launched because of a shared library error:"/ <"
I have done the obvious, repair permisions, disk utilities, no luck, I have read forums but have not seen a specific solution.
I have seen some distantly similar suggestions about dumping prefs for applications but I dont know how to do that. The next solution appears to be reinstall syst software.
    Any help, much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Wayne

Thanks for taking time to reply.
I got everything back up and running (i think, today is the 1st day I will be using machine).
Here is what I did, in case it is useful for others:
    1) I backed up my account
    2) Went to apple downloads
    3) found the 10.4.7 download for PPC users (NOT the INTEL versions, I am still on a PPC Mac)
    4) downloaded & installed
    5) rebooted (had a wierd exp when rebooting, machine was halfway through reboot and suddenly rebooted again.
    6) 2nd reboot, (sweat on brow) everything rebooted as normal!!!
Not sure why the install quit the first time via automatic software update, my only theory is apple was telling me to instal the intel version.
    Best
