10.4.5 update - goodbye performance - hello spinning beach ball!

After updating from 10.4.4 to 10.4.5 I've had shocking performence issues.
It maily seems to affect the simple tasks...
Opening a new window (ie, one not cached into memory) takes between 2 and 5 seconds before the icons are displayed. No matter if you're in Icon view, column view, or list view.
I have a Dual 2Ghz G5 with a 500GB SATA and 2.5GB RAM, this should NOT be a problem, and it never was before I updated to 10.4.5. The OS X installation is only about 1 month old as well.
Simple GUI tasks such as opening menus, single-clicking on icons, control clicking dock items, rolling over a dock item to make the name appear, etc are ALL VERY SLUGGISH. I'm talking about 2-3 seconds minimum before anything happens. But once it's done (ie, cached) it's fine and normal if I do it again.
This doesn't just affect the Finder, it affects ALL applications!
This is a disgrace. I've tried fixing permisions but it doesn't help.
I've tried shouting "YOU. ARE. A. G5." but it doesn't help.
How am I supposed to get anything productive done when even the simplist tasks are too much for it?
Dual 2Ghz G5, 2.5GB RAM, 500GB HD, 250GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 256MB

Hi Mark
I found the similar problem on my G5 in 10.4.3.
I asked a Tech in the local AppleCentre and he said this...
"Press « Apple S-key » at Start up.
What you'll get is the Unix black screen with white writing.
Once it has finished booting up, type in « fsck -f » that's « fsck[space]-f »
That should fix the problem."
Hopefully it does for you.
Regards
Steve
PS I sent this info to Allan, who asked you the question

  • ITunes 7.7 Update and iPod classic = Spinning Beach Ball

Just upgraded to the new iTunes 7.7 (iphone 2.0 and app store support). After, I plugged in my ipod classic and it took almost 5 minutes of the "spinning beach ball" to recognize the ipod. I check and it says my software (1.1.2) is up to date. I ejected and tried it again. Same thing. Once recognized, the ipod classic seems to work fine in iTunes, but still not sure about all options.
Anyone else upgrade iTunes and find the same thing happening?
Note: No option to sync ipod classic games any more. A new "Applications" designation listed in iTunes 7.7 (which has my purchased games listed), but no way to "sync" them or resync them if there were to be an issue or if I wanted to remove the game now and sync it again later...

I'm having the same problem. Last night I wanted to update my iPhone to 2.0 so I had to update iTunes first. When I connect my iPhone, everything works fine (thank God). But quite a different story when I connected my 80 GB classic today. Spinning beachball, iPod icon appears on desktop and in Finder, but iTunes does not show my iPod.
I've tried everything I can think of from resetting my iPod to reinstalling iTunes. Nothing has worked for me.
Is there no fix to this yet? Has anyone solved the problem? Are we suppose to wait for Apple to solve this problem?
    Dirk

  • Spinning beach ball--slow performance

    Hello:
My wife's MacBook (two years old, 10.5.5) is prone to episodes where the spinning beach ball appears and keeps spinning for a minute or more. This degrades performance considerably. :>
I looked at the app inspector and didn't see anything odd.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    David

    Hi David Coursey-
How full is the hard drive? Does the BB spin after performing a particular action or with specific software? How much RAM is installed?

Ok will check, as of right now I have 82.57gb free, that's plenty of space will check the disk though using disk utility. Also I am now downloading the update from the apple website instead of going through software update

  • Spinning beach ball and slower performance

I have been noticing that the performance of my iMac is becoming slower, with the dreaded spinning beach ball apearing whenever I change between applications to perform relatively basic functions. However, the worst is when I am in iTunes, where I experience the spinning beach ball for several minutes after connecting and choosing a device, and I typically cannot do anything else in other applications until it stops. As for other applications, I have nearly abandoned Aperture because anything from scrolling to adjustments will cause the spinning beach ball to return several seconds to minutes.
My iMac is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with nearly 30g's left on the hard drive. I have the memory max'd at 4GB. I am running OS X 10.7.2 with all apps completely up to date. Overall, I am doing basic functions in Bento, Pages, and surfing Safari on a daily basis with only the minimal applications needed open at once.
Is there anything I can do to resolve this?

Hi Todd, thanks for the reply.  Actually, I do have CS6 via my Creative Cloud membership but I'm having to work in 5.5 on this particular client's system for a project.
I was hoping that the above solution would be the answer I was searching for but alas, that is apparently not the case, since the issues have returned and the spinning beach ball continues to churn... (nothing like the elation of finding a solution only to later feel crushing defeat as the problem returns...)
The issues were resolved for a while, so perhaps this post may still be able help someone.  I'd rather be working in CS6 right now, and I'm pushing for this client to do the upgrade as well.  Considering how much time is being wasted waiting for the Mac to continue after hanging every other keystroke, I'd think the client would be anxious to make the change!

  • Slow and spinning beach balls after 10.8.2 update

After the initial install of ML 10.8 for the most part the sytem seemed to run fine.  Very few snags.  But after the 10.8.1 and now the 10.8.2 updates I am finding slower and slower times for programs to boot and waiting to be able to type anything and spinning beach balls all the time.  I have noticed this continuously bringing up the contacts program, MS word, Pages, Apple Mail etc.   Initial booting of the computer is slower as well and often has a frozen beach ball for a minute or so before it unfreezes and proceeds.  Also huge slow down in printing from my wifi printer which before was super fast.  I have reset the SMC, Pram, did disk permission repairs and all of those items.  Nothing has changed anything.  This is a early 15" 2011 MBP unit with 8 gig of ram, 750 gig hard drive with only 250 gig in use, 2.2 I7 processor and Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.  All software is updated to latest versions.  This slower and slower and waiting thing is getting continuously worse all the time and very annoying.   If anyone has any ideas I am open to suggestions to find a solution.  Thanks much.

Seems we have a lot of people with simular problems but a lot of different combonations.  Cleaning caches, reseting Pram, taking almost everything out of login items even using a program to defrag the unit,  (mine is not a SSD drive), making sure all apps etc. are up to date and are ML ok etc. I have all done.  I even had the unit tested by the Gen. Bar guys to make sure the hardware was ok including the drive even though I was pretty sure it was as I did not have this problem before ML.  All checked out fine.  I have not in the past had any problem with Time Machine backups but??????????   I only use a usb external and plug it in when I want to do a back up so it is not doing the backup thing all the time.  I have thought of doing the erase and clean install  which will be a huge amount of work but I have read many postings saying they have done that and it did not solve the problem so reluctant to do that if in the end I will spend two days for nothing?   Could go back to SL or Lion as I have bootable backups but why should I have to do this on a year old MBP to make it work properly?  Seems there ought to be a solution on this but Apple does not seem to have one?  As I said in my original post all seemed good for the first month of ML then it began going down hill and has continued to ever since.  I did notice last night that something strange seemed to help for a little while.  I loged out of the unit as I have auto login and when I relogged in all seemed much quicker and better but today it has started to slow down again?   I know everyone with this problem would like a solution!

  • Safari Spinning Beach Ball after 10.5.5, Camera Raw Update, and Rmt Desktop

Safari is having real problems after remote desktop and camera raw update. Safari is totally unusable. Spinning beach ball forever and brings the entire machine to a hault. Hope someone can help with a fix soon
I zapped the pram. Tried deleting safari preferences. Cleaned out all the caches and histories. Rebuilt the permissions. Reset safari and reboot many times. No love.
I am now in the process of reapply the combo updater for 10.5.5, and repairing thee premissions one last time.

    Hi,
If Safari continues to misbehave, Save your Bookmarks by using File/Export Bookmarks and any other personal information you have stored. Delete the Safari and app, download and reinstall:
    http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
Make sure and run Disk Utility from your Applications/Utilities folder and Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER each and every update or upgrade.

  • Just ran a recent update, and computer woke up with plain blue screen and spinning beach ball, was it the update that made the computer crash?

just ran a recent update for my macbook pro/mid 2010, and the computer just woke up with a plain blue screen & spinning beach ball - I had to do a hard shut down.
I am also having the problem of having my screen going black for a couple of seconds, I read up on it in Support.  But I was wondering if there is something else going on.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

  • ITunes spinning beach ball with update

I haven't seen this anywhere else on the net yet:
I'm having a problem with CPU hog when updating podcasts. iTunes has no problem when I just run the program (offline or if I don't have it automatically update podcasts). But once I set it to update or hit refresh I'm sunk.
Before the update (which I could of sworn I updated once before, but it just asked me to update again & it popped up in software update...) I never had a problem. Now iTunes spinning beach balls me every time.
All other apps act normally & no system slow down. Just iTunes.
HOWEVER, when looking in the Activity Monitor it actually says that iTunes is using 102% of my CPU! How can that be???
I've repaired permissions, trashed preferences, and reinstalled the program. No change.
    Any ideas? Thanks!!

Did some more testing & it appears that it only happens when I update video podcasts. Audio podcasts update without stalling iTunes.

  • This fixed my spinning beach ball in Safari after the 10.6.1 update

  • I just downloaded the new Java update now Safari is slow and I'm getting the spinning beach ball of death.

Typing in Safari with the new Java update that I downloded today causes the spinning beach ball and slow loading of pages. As usual, Java is causing problems. Just once I would like to see things run without having to depend on Java.

    24Golfer:
I think there's something more, because it keeps happening to me with the Finder where it says that it is not responding when I go to the Force Quit window.
Are you saying that the Finder is reported as not responding? If yes, try this:
    Go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.finder.plist
    Drag com.apple.finder.plist to desktop
    Restart computer.
Monitor to see if anything changes, or Finder is still not responding.
    Good luck.

  • Aperture 3.3 update & now all I get is the spinning beach ball

Aperture worked fine all this time...until I updated to 3.3
Now after Aperture is launched, without me having to do ANYTHING in Aperturit goes to the spinning beach ball and says "Processing" at the bottom of the window.
And I can't do anything except Force Quit.
In the course of Troubleshooting, I've done the following...
Held down the OPTION and COMMAND keys while launching Aperture in order to:
    Repair Permissions
    Repair Database
    Rebuild Database
    Restarted the iMac (multiple times)
Used Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions
Anybody have insights into how to get Aperture 3.3 to work?
    Thanks.

OK, so I didn't have time to call AppleCare and decided not to after all.
    I solved it by:
    - using Time Machine to restore my Aperture Library from the time before I upgraded Aperture
    - right-clicked on the now-restored Aperture Library and launched it using iPhoto
    - iPhoto ran through Processing and Upgrades and reported it couldn't find a movie file, etc.
    - I couldn't find the movie file iPhoto was referring to but did all I could to 'clean up' the files in iPhoto
    - I then quit iPhoto and launched the Aperture Library using Aperture...
    ...and it worked.
There was still a little cleaning up to do (I did use Preferences in both iPhoto and Aperture to delete the connection to my MobileMe Galleries/iCloud account).
Then relaunched Aperture again to make sure it's still working, clicked on random photos to make sure I wasn't just seeing thumbnails.
Everything seems to be there and okay.
    Good luck everyone!!!
    C'mon Apple!

  • Spinning Beach Ball again after new update,,

Just got the audio fix update, for the popping sound on the 10.4.10 update
I had problem when I first did the update to 10.4.10 with spinning beachball when I did anything involving the airport icon and/or network config, internet connect, et etc, by some small miracle I got it working by manually selecting the network (unfortunately this is not an option these days as it is spinning beach ball territory). I finally got this fixed and then to my suprise, ran the audio fix update and it is back, I cannot do anything without invoking the beach ball, what gives, please help??

    Hi there,
Are you using input methods? It looks to me like you have set a simplified Chinese input method. I'm curious what it is. If my guess is correct, then if you disable that input method, you shouldn't have the problem. You will need to remove it from the input methods folder inside of /Library/InputMethods.
Also, what is the input method you're using?
    Daniel
