10.4.5 with dark screen

My two-month old Powerbook G4 (10.4.5) screen has suddenly gone dark. We reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but we are unable to do a hardware test because we can't see a cursor to select from the options. Using the start up disk doesn't help. We also tried resetting the PMU. The screen is almost black. We can just see a hint of icons and if our noses are a few inches from the screen we can read big words. At start up it reminds me of a flourescent light trying to come on. It flickers on one side of the screen and then gives up and goes dark. Any ideas?

If the brightness is turned all the way up and the screen remains very dim, I am afraid this likely means that the backlight has failed and needs replacement. Certainly this should be covered under the warranty if the PB is only two months old.
Before giving up, though, try shutting down, removing the battery and unplugging the PowerBook. Wait 30 minutes and then start up again after replacing the battery and plugging the power adapter back in.

  • IMac 20" with dark screen corners

    Hi folks,
I've got an iMac 20" Core Duo which iI purchased in October 2006. My Applecare has expired.
I've just noticed the tiniest little 'smudge' in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. At first I thought it was dirt on the outside of the screen, but carefully cleaning shows that the screen is spotless.
Has anyone else seen this? Is the display dying, or is there contamination on the inside of the screen? WIll it worsen or is there anything else I can do to improve/fix/stop it?
    My lovely, beautiful, iMac!....[stay calm].....

What does the smudge look like. Can you post a photo?
If it's looking like dirt (and not merely uneven backlight, which almost all iMacs have), it could be under the front glass. This is rather easy to fix. The front glass is attached to the computer with magnets and can be lifted off with suction cups. When the glass is lifted off, you have access to the underside of the front glass and to the outside of the lcd panel. Both can be cleaned with a damp microfiber cloth without much risk.
Here's a youtube video that demonstrates the removal:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cHMHzq5E5I&feature=related
He just brushes the LCD panel, but you may actually need to clean the underside of the glass too. As said, wiping (not hard rubbing) with a damp (not wet) microfiber cloth is okay. Both surfaces are glass and to my knowledge they are not coated. If you use distilled water and newly bought cloth (wipe damp, then wipe dry with 2nd dry cloth) you'll be able to get the surface clean with no residue.
You actually don't need a fancy suction cup like he does, any suction things will work, like a bathrooom towel holder. Just when you pull the top away, don't tilt it too far, just enough to be able to get a hold of the sides like he does in the video and then pull the whole thing away.
If this does not cure it, it's either dirt inside the LCD panel (this can happen too) or a problem with the backlight of the panel, which will both be bad news because it's hard or impossible to fix.

  • IMac won't boot, dark screen after normal grey start up screen

Quite perplexed with this problem, have tried everything I can think of.
Computer: iMac 2.16 gHz 24" mid 2006, 4 gig RAM
    OS: 10.6.8
Froze and required hard shutdown.  Subsequent to this, has behaved consistently:
Normal grey screen with Apple logo and spinning timer, can hear disk activity. Then the screen goes dark and nothing else happens (although the computer is still on).  Have to  perform hard shutdown.
    Have tried:
    1. Booting into single user mode (multiple times) and performed fsck, no errors noted
    2. after using 'exit' command in single user mode, computer attempts to reboot but then freezes after noting 'panic'
    3. Reset PRAM (no change)
    4. Tried safe mode boot, progress bar on grey screen progresses, then spinning timers comes on, then same crash with dark screen
    4. Disassembled computer, removed hard drive, mounted normally in external SATA enclosure.  I backed up critical data, ran Disk Utility Repair, no errors noted.
    5. Reinstalled HD, reassembled computer, rebooted, same issue
    6. Attmepted to boot with Snow Leopard Install disc to perform a fresh Achive and Install - after prolonged grey screen with spinning timer and audible DVD drive access, same switch to dark screen and no further progress
    7. Same panic message and stalled boot attempt noted when booting into single user mod
I'm stumped.  My assumption is that there is a courrpt file that is causing a kernel panic during boot and I assumed that I'd be able to perform an archive and install but when this failed I'm guessing all I can do is replace the hard drive with a new one and then go through the hassle of transferring all the data over manually.
I would welcome hearing any other observations, similar experiences or other ideas.  MTIA.

One update ... when I boot the computer and get the 'dark screen',  I hear disc activity.  So I started hitting the return key and I get the chime with each return as if I'm on the log in screen and hitting the return to log in without entering any text.
That would argue there is a problem with the screen.
However, it does not explain why the computer display works normally during single user mode and hangs (without the screen going dark) when trying to reboot from this mode.

jpmarkques post is a good start point, after folling his directions, you can try detect displays. Also try different rsolution and refresh rates.
Most of the projectors I have used support a 1024X768 res.
Youcan also try a pram reset if it still does not detect.
Leave theproctor connected and powered up, power down the MBP.
Power back up the MBP and hold the following keys before you hear the start up chime:
Option, command, P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times.

That ! appears when iPhoto has broken the link/file path to the orignal photo.  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Mine's a late '09, but there have been display issues with iMacs.
Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

My ipod sank in water by accident for 1 hour, after lay drying for 1 month, I connect it with my Mac, it show a dark apple and began to charge, after few hrs, it showed fully charge, but after I pressed, it became a dark screen, but it shows a dark apple everytime I connect the Mac, what can I do? I will try my best to save it, I love this ipod very much as it's a present from my dear.

After drying for a month and it's still not working, it's almost certainly suffered hardware damage and will need to be replaced. You can learn what Apple will charge to replace it here:

BTW, you posted originally in the iPod touch forum. It's best if you post in the forum specifically for your product; you'll get the most applicable responses that way.

  • I have a late 2009 imac i am having issues with my screen flickering and getting dark

i have a late 2009 imac  21 inch i am having problems with my screen flickering ND GETTING DARK DOES THIS MEAN THAT MY COMPUTER IA FAILING

I have partly the same problem (Sceen blackening) sparodically.
2010 iMAC  with I7 CPU and ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB Graphics.
If I lower the brightness to around (3 or sometimes 4 of the on screen squares F2) the issue does not happen at all. I prefer a bright screen.
The issue commenced immediately after instaalling OS X 10.8.2 update one year ago.
The current software is  OS X 10.9 (13A603)
The graphics on this computer are always first rate when working properly even at maximum brightness
There are particular days and times when the problem routinely occurs.
Some of my neighbors with iMacs have similar problems.
I live adjacent to the City of London in an area where new building seems to be developing faster than the various utilities and there are known Power Network issues. Professional surge supressors make no difference.
I live in a large property with four independent ring mais. The issue is present on all four rings. I have yet to take the computer elsewhere to possibly eliminate power issues from the problem.
I am reluctant to replace an otherwise fine top of range iMac which otherwise serves me well since the same problems might be present.

  • Turned the ipad on but dark screen with rotating wheel is all I get?

turned the ipad on but all I have is a dark screen and a rotating wheel?

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Why do I get a dark screen in Windows 7 after Boot Camp?

    Hello fellows!
    What is wrong?
About this week I have tried to install Windows – Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit – on my MacBook Pro(Early 2011-model). Everything works perfectly, except one thing! The screen.
Before I am installing the drivers from Windows Support the screen is lightly and everything, but after the restart, everything on the screen goes dark. I have tried to find the correct drivers, but then it tells me that: I don't have to correct Graphic adapter.
I have to graphic cards: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and an Intel HD Graphics 3000.
Yesterday I downloaded a program known as gfxCardStatus – a program, which can switch between the graphic cards on your computer –, and I tried it.
Before installing this program I knew that Mac OS X was running the Intel-model, when Windows 7 was running the AMD. Then, I switched from Intel to AMD on MAC OS X, then I booted up Windows and reinstalled the drivers from WindowsSupport, and everything worked properly! Until I rebooted to get multicore working.
I was so frustrated that I gave up and waited for today. Then this morning I tried to do the same thing, to get a lightly screen again. But a terrible thing happened. Mac OS X got the same problem. But after some time working things out it worked properly.. On Mac OS X!
What can you do for me?
I hope you can tell me what is wrong with the Boot Camp. I really want Windows to run properly. I cannot accept a dark screen, and I hope somebody out there has experience and at the same time got the awesome personality to help me through this problem.
Operating System on Mac: Mac OS X Lion.
Opereating System on Windows: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
    Have a nice day, everybody.

I can easily get into Windows. It is just that the drivers don't seem to work correct, and makes the screen dark.

  • Ibook g3 OSX 10.2.8 was upgraded to 10.4 but screen went black, sound fine.  How do I revert to 10.2.8 with blank screen?

So here's what happened.  The Apple Store Geniuses generously upgraded my ibook g3 with OSX 10.2.8 to OSX 10.4 via USB port since my CD drive no longer works.  But the screen suddenly went black, sound was fine.  Genius was stumped, but when I restarted later I very briefly got an initial screen plus the music that accompanies an initial OS installation before screen went black again.  I really think that OSX 10.4 was more than my ibook g3 could handle.  I don't recall the specifications anymore and can't check them with a black screen, but capacity was fairly limited.  I went back to Apple a few weeks ago to ask them to downgrade my poor ibook g3 to OSX 10.3 which seems more likely to work with my computer's specifications, but was informed that OSX 10.3 is no longer available for them to load via USB.  Today it occured to me that OSX 10.2.8 is still somewhere on my ibook, and if there's some shortcut I can use to restart under 10.2 instead of 10.4, some switch of OS I can make while blind (since the screen is currently dark), I could at least still use the ibook using the old 10.2 OS.  Is there a way to do this switch in OSX while essentially blind?  If not, my ibook is basically a doorstop I originally spent over $600 on 10 years ago.  I really can't afford to just run out an buy new computers as I am disabled and dying a slow painful death from Lyme disease, but can't afford medication to treat my own illness, let alone buy another computer every 5 years.  Please help!

    Hello,
Ok let's see what we can do here.
First thing to try is resetting the PMU. Http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 it may make no difference but its good practice to do so.
So times it can resolve faults. You say they installed Mac OS X 10.4. Did they setup a user a count and did you see the desktop? Did they simply hand it back to you when the installed failed with a blank screen?
The truth is, in order for you to restore your iBook your going to need the system restore disk. With a broken CD drive this has limitations as you have no real means to install.
The only option would be to use target disk mode on an external drive, but being an early G3 iBook I'm not sure if target disk mode will work. I am going to assume the shop used this method to install via USB.
What would be a good solution is to fit a replacement CD drive. They are often cheap enough to buy and relatively easy to fit on a white duel USB model. Replacement CD drives can be brought from eBay at very little money.
An online guide can help you fit one with the right screwdrivers.
With a replacement drive, you will be open to better options for installing or even using an apple hardware test disk to diagnose any faults with the screen.
Suprised you was left in such a situation by the shop.

  • I have an Imac.  When I click to open google maps a permeable but dark screen covers my monitor screen and I get a note that tells me to shut down the computer and restart it.  This hasn't helped.  Everything else seems to work fine.

When I attempt to open google maps in Firefox on my Imac, a dark screens descends over my monitor screen and a note tells me there's been an error, no number is noted, and that I need to turn off and restart my computer.  This doesn't help, but everything else works, including google maps in other browsers.

    This is a kernel panic.
First verify that Firefox is fully updated including all extensions.
    If this fails to fix....
Restart in Safe Boot mode then open Firefox.
    *  shutdown
    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT
    *  login and open Firefox.
If you continue to have problems see this article for more options to fix.
