10.4.6 Airport Broken ICMP

I just installed 10.4.6 and all of a sudden, I'm completely unable to ping any host outside of my subnet. I completely flushed the firewall rules, which didn't help. My routing table is fine and everything appears to work except ICMP.
Did 10.4.6 break ICMP?? I can ping hosts within my local subnet, but not outside. Every other system on the subnet, including the mini running 10.4.5 can ping outside with no problems, so the router is not the issue.
Anybody else experiencing these terrible ICMP issues?
Update 1: One more thing.. I'm using the airport extreme (en1) interface. It will be interesting to test the ethernet interface.
Update 2: Just tested the wired ethernet interface. ICMP is fine. This means that ICMP is broken for the airport interface.

Hi Adam,
Did 10.4.6 break ICMP??
I can do ICMP just fine from my AirPort network, several users are reporting AirPort troubles but most of them are DHCP-related. If ICMP was broken then most likely other protocols would be broken as well.
Did you update your AirPort software lately?
Try flushing the lookupd cache from the Terminal: lookupd -flushcache
Did you check your port mappings on your basestation (if you use one)?
Did you try to run a tcpdump on en1?

  • Is my airport broken? My wireless has stopped all of a sudden! No solution works!

hi, I need help please. After working fine for years my wireless connection on my desktop which is on snow leoperd 10.6.8 has stopped connecting all of a sudden. It works fine on my macbook pro and my iphone. When I turn it on I get none of your preffered networks available, I find my network and when I type in the password for my network I get connection timeout. In diagnostics I have.....
    Airport failed
    Airport settings failed
    Network setting failed
It has connected a couple of times randomly but goes off when I try to load a page,
I have tried loads of solutions from forums like....
deleting networks and creating a new one
changing channels and even tried deleting the system preference files from the library but still no joy.
I just want to ask for any other solutions before I have to take it 50 miles to the nearest 'genius centre' to get it looked at.
    Could my airport be broken?

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Also try this - Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

  • Is my airport broken?

I have a 2009 13" unibody MBP and yesterday it stopped being able to connect to my home network.
All the other computers in the house are fine connecting to the same network.
It says that airport is turned on, but it refuses to list the name of the home network on the list of available networks in network prefs.
I have tried everything I know and still no luck.
Is it possible that the airport is broken?
Can anyone please advise on what I might try to fix it?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Well, it's good news that you can see the BT hotspots. This means that there is no hardware-related problem. If your antenna sees one, it sees all the others.
I would definitely suggest you to use WPA2-PSK AES encryption instead of the MAC address filtering. It is much easier to use, and just as secure. Alternatively you can disable SSID broadcasting to hide your WiFi from others.
I know that all the other computers can connect to your router via WiFi, but these things happen, and usually the router is guilty, so you should still give it a try. If you can connect to your router with MAC address filtering turned off, then the problem is with your router. Try reseting it. To do this:
    1. Unplug the power supply.
    2. Press and hold the reset button on the bottom of the router.
    3. Keeping the reset button pressed, plug the router back in.
    4. Keep the reset button pressed for at least 10 more seconds.
    5. Release the reset button.
Don't forget that reseting your router means, that it will forget all of its setting including the internet connection info. It is wise to have your internet contract at hands before starting as you will need the connection login credentials.
After reset, you can set your router again as you like, but again, I suggest WPA2-PSK AES.
IMPORTANT: never leave your WiFi unprotected longer than necessary. If turning the MAC address filtering off solves the problem, then you should set up some kind of encryption.
If you still cannot connect with MAC address filtering turned off, the the problem is in the MacBook. Try software update.
If your software is up to date, you should check a couple of settings. Check if your DHCP settings are OK. Go to: System Preferences>Network select AirPort on the left, and click 'Advanced...'. Click the TCP/IP tab. The 'Configure IPv4' should be set to 'Using DHCP' and 'Configure IPv6' to 'Automatically'.
If none of the above helps, than I have just insane ideas left. I will explain those if your problem is still not solved after these.
    Regards,
    Gábor

  • Airport broken on last update

On the last "security update" to OSX 10.3.9 my airport stopped working. When I try to connect nothing happens, and a process "SystemUIServer" is hung in the monitor.
I have tried resetting the connection point and changing the WEP password. I have no problem accessing the router with the wired connection as normal.
If I use "Assist me..." I can select the network, but it tells me the password is wrong, even though I can copy it straight of the router's WEP settings.
Wireless card firmware version is 404.2
The router is a Netgear DG834G, firmware version V1.05.00
Anyone have the same problem or have any idea what might be the problem?

    Update:
It now connects, but drops out after a while. I changed nothing, the only discernable difference is that there are no other networks detected now (I live in an apartment and can frequently pick up several).
Maybe the re-authrntication with lots of interference was what did it.

  • IBook G4 AirPort broken, will not reboot

    Hello.
I recently recieved an iBook G4 12-inch 1.33GHZ (2005) from a family member. Today, I turned it on. Tried to connect to my wifi but got a kernel panic. They were aware of this problem and that is why they were getting rid of it. I reinstalled OS X 10.4.2 with the original install discs, but the wifi still gave me a kernel panic. I put it to sleep once, then woke it. I put it to sleep again, but then it simply would not wake up. I rebooted from the Install DVD and reinstalled OS X... again! This time it would not reboot from the hard drive- it only worked when I inserted the install DVD and selected the hard drive as the startup disc. Now, I rebooted it. I hear the sound, CPU, and CD drive, but no hard drive noise. I have had this issue a lot when trying to get it going. I did some research and the AirPort card can be problematic with this model. I am fine with using a USB dongle for wifi, but I want my computer to reliably start up when I want it to! So, what should I do when I turn on my iBook and the hard drive does not start and AirPort crashes the computer?
    Thanks,
    Rmich1731

Someone familiar with reading & understanding the Kernel Panic logs, could probably be able
    to connect the cause to the Wi-Fi card. In the iBook G4 12-inch 1.33GHz + 14-inch 1.42GHz
models the card also supplies Bluetooth as well as 801.11 wireless frequencies.

    •Resolving Kernel Panics - troubleshooting:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html#Anchor-Troubleshooting-49575
This card was noted to be a cause of kernel panic and some users were able to disconnect
the card, then use a USB wireless adapter (when available, years ago, USB2) for wi-fi.
So the cause of the Panic is probably the hardware related issue some of these get.
{A company such as wegenermedia.com or powerbookmedic could probably perform
some repairs. While in the shop, other upgrade or repair could be done for little extra
labor costs, since computer would be apart on the bench. These can use an upgrade
    to SSD such as legacy OWC ATA version, & replace HDD, to speed things along.}
    Back to the kernel panic...
The repair requires a take-apart since this wireless card is essentially on the bottom
of the logic board held there by a small screw or two, & it has a tiny connector there.
With that carefully detached, the computer should no longer kernel panic. It also would
have no built-in wireless support for BT or wi-fi.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Airport broken by latest update

    Hi,
A few hours ago I installed the recent airport update pushed out by Apple.
Now my late 2008 Macbook Pro wont stay connected to my 1TB timecapsule and appears to "hang". Prior to the update everything was fine.
At first I suspected the timecapsule but other devices remain connected to it fine and testing after a backup failed showed that my iPhone could connect to the timecapsule and browse without any problem.
To further test the issue I connected the MBP to the timecapsule by an ethernet cable. Everything is fine again without restarting either the aiport utility or the timecapsule.
Leaving the timecapsule connected via ethernet my backups work fine. If I try and use wireless again however it times out after a few minutes.
As mentioned before there was no issue prior to the update. My Aiport utility shows version 5.4.1.
Is there a way to roll back this update?

My Mac Mini G4 stopped connecting to my Time Capsule after the most recent update.
How I wish I had not updated after all. I use my Mac Mini as a home theater system and buy movies and shows from iTunes. Guess I'll be using my cable's on demand for a while instead.
    Details:
    Mac Mini G4 1.5 ghz.
    Leopard - latest update.
Two other Mac laptops haven no problems whatsoever:
    Macbook Pro 2.4ghz
    Macook (original white, slow)
The Macbook is in the room almost next to the Time Capsule. No issues.
The Macbook Pro is in the room above, no issues.
    Signal strength is very strong.
The Mac Mini -- it has trouble connecting to the network.
It is in the room next to the Time Capsule. It is under the TV in a media cabinet.
Two external considerations may play a part: heat and bad grounding.
In the cabinet is a Wii and the digital cable receiver. Both get hot, as well as the Mac Mini and it's external hard drive.
Also, the downstairs has problems with electrical line noise, possibly due to poor grounding somewhere. I have been unable to fully isolate this issue, and the electricians who the landlord's management company have sent have seemed to not care (or just don't know what grounding is, but I'll give them that benefit of a doubt).
I am a bit concerned the feedback is slowly destroying my electronics, but I've been running that risk.
Both the Mac Mini and Time Capsule are on lines with this noise.
Still, I am not sure it is either. Time Capsule performs well with the two laptops.
The Mac Mini had no problems before the update.
I will try removing it from the cabinet and trying it that way later.
I have tried to change my Time Capsule settings, but to no avail. The only thing I have not done? Open it up, or change it to regular WPA. Going to do that after this post.
If I turn off the Mac Mini's airport then try and reconnect, Airport time's out.
Notice, it is reaching the time capsule, because if I enter the incorrect password I do get an incorrect password response.
After restarting the Mac Mini after being away for the day (and it being off), it immediately connected to the Time Capsule and Google loaded.
Immediately after Google loaded, the internet stopped working.
Traceroute could not find Google, and there was high latency at the first hop: (my Time Capsule router).
Pinging the Time Capsule resulted in a bizarre response: latency in the tune of 50000ms. This fluctuated from about 20000ms to 50000ms, then dropped to 6-12 ms, then back up to 20k to 50k again, then down to 1-10k, then to 6-12ms, then back up to 20k-50k, then 800-900k ms latency, then it stopped being able to resolve the host, then connection was lost.
Something is wrong with my wireless connection, and I can not sort out if it is the Time Capsule or the Mac Mini, or both.
Time Capsule appears to work for both laptops, but the Mac Mini ping results are interesting.
The only change made was the recent Mac Mini update. (Which, btw, the Macbook Pro at least has made as well, yet is still working.)
Will be logging off to try and change the wireless protection to open, and then WPA, to see if any changes result.
One last thing: I live in an area with about 60 or so townhomes in my immediate area, and a long list of other wireless hotspots (mostly secure). I also have a US Time Capsule that is being used in Great Britain. I don't know if this is contributing to the problems (locale does not have a GB option, WTG Apple!)
Here goes opening the hot spot . . .
    Sincerely,
    John

  • Thinkpad WEP connect to Macbook/Airport broken

Hi, I've been attempting to tether a X61s with the Intel 3945ABG nic to a Macbook with Internet Connection Sharing, to no avail.
If WEP is disabled (ie unsecured network) it works fine. When on the Macbook I turn WEP encryption on, the Thinkpad barfs and every permutation of Access Connections network settings I have tried fails. Obviously I have entered the passkey correctly, though I wonder if Access Connections is confused between ascii vs hex - and I'm not clear how to verify if so.
What is the trick to get a Thinkpad to connect to a Macbook adhoc network with WEP enabled? It has been extraordinarily frustrating thus far.
    Thank you.

After spending about 4 hours on the phone with Apple (2 calls), Apple's solution was to toss the AEBS and run a hard line to my work space. Unbelievable.

  • Airport Express that works for I while and then quits

I have an airport express that I connect with an Ethernet wire to my wifi network base station to be able to extend the wifi to other areas of the house. It used to work perfectly and I had the green light on it for days and days on, in fact it never quit it could be on for weeks.
Now it works for a  while, an hour or so, and then the light goes out completely (no orange light, just no light) and there is no longer any wifi communication. Is the Airport broken or could it have something to do with the originating wifi provider base station which is in fact hardwired to the the Express?

Now it works for a  while, an hour or so, and then the light goes out completely (no orange light, just no light) and there is no longer any wifi communication.
Unfortunately, this is a sign that you are likely going to need to replace this Express.
Here is what I think is happening based on experience with these devices:
The internal components on the Express heat up significantly and after an hour or so, the heat build up is causing a weak electronic component to change in value, or heat expansion is causing a loss of an electrical connection at a tiny solder joint.
When the device cools down, it will work again for awhile, but the same pattern will likely repeat. Internal repairs on the Express are not really feasible since the labor costs will likely exceed the cost of a new Express.
If you are really handy with small electronic repairs and you have the time, you could carefully saw the case open along the center seam to open up the Express and take a look at connections and solder points. It 's unlikely that you will find something obvious, but might be worth a shot.

  • Airport Express refuses to join network.

I have an existing wireless network consisting of a D-Link DGL-4500 router running a mixed 802.11g and 802.11n network.  Everything has been working fine for ages.  I just bought an Airport Express in order to stream iTunes to my receiver.  I plug in the Airport, and get a blinking amber light.  I fire up the Airport Utility app on my iPhone, and right away it sees the Airport.  I configure the Airport for my network, and . . . nothing.  Blinking amber light.  The Airport Utility now cannot find the Airport, and eventually gives up with an error.  I check the logs on the router, and I see no evidence that the Airport has tried to connect to the router (I can't find the MAC anywhere in the logs).
I also tried to configure the Airport using the Airport Utility on my PC (Widnows 7, 64-bit).  I did a factory reset on the Airport.  Thereafter, the Utility will not see the Airport.  I connect the PC directly to the default wireless network created by the Airport, but the Utility still will not see the Airport.  I have to choose "Configure other" from the drop-down and enter the default IP and password for the Airport.  Once I have done so, I can edit the configuration settings, but after entering the correct information, the Airport resets itself, and . . . nothing.  Again, just a blinking amber light. The Airport Utility cannot find the Airport, and eventually gives up with an error. I check the logs on the router, and I see no evidence that the Airport has tried to connect to the router (I can't find the MAC anywhere in the logs).
    Is my Airport broken?

    Bob:
Thanks for the reply.  My understanding is that the iPhone Airport Utility app passes on the network settings to the Airport.  Since the iPhone connects successfully to the router and can access the internet (and therefore presumably "knows" the network), I would think that it is providing the proper information to the Airport.
However, when using the Airport Utility on my PC, I have double (triple) checked that I am entering the correct settings.  I've lost count of the number of tries.  The D-Link is using WPA2-Personal security.
What makes me wonder if the AIrport is faulty is this: I did a factory reset on the Airport.  When it restarts, it thinks it is a base station.  I configure my PC to "join" the Airport network.  However, the Airport Utility still cannot see the Airport, even when connected directly to it.
I did try to connect to the Airport from my Windows XP netbook using an ethernet cable.  The Airport Utility saw the Airport, and allowed me to configure it, but when the Airport restarted, it disappeared.  The Utility could not thereafter find the Airport, and it did not appear in the router logs.

  • Massive slowdowns when using Airport Extreme

    Hi everyone,
I'm pulling my hair out over this problem. I have a 50/5 cable connection which deteriorates in an unacceptable manner as soon as I connect to the web wirelessly using my almost brand new Airport Extreme Base station (bought this August). I have an Ubee EVM 3200 cable modem, and as long as I plug my laptop directly into it, I get the advertised speeds and pings at around 20 ms. However, as soon as I involve my Airport Extreme, everything falls apart: my downstream drops to about 25Mbits (sometimes lower) and my ping goes up to 40-50 ms. Upload speeds remain intact, for some reason.
Now, the base station is situated about five meters from my Macbook Pro and signal strength is supposedly very good. Even if I sit down right next to it, my speeds are still only half of what I should be getting. I also tried pingtest.net, which wasn't even able to test for packet loss. So, what am I doing wrong here? Is my Airport broken? Is there some kind of problem between the Airport Base Station and the modem? Or am I just stupid and there's some trivial setting that's causing all this?
I've already tried this fix: http://discussions.apple.com/messag...321416#11321416
It vastly improved my ping (to about 20, where it should normally be), but speeds are still terrible.
I'd be very grateful to hear your comments.

The picture did not load, but I assume that it displays the signal strength of about 68% that you mention. Are there other networks displayed as well?
Users are very confused about signal strength. They see 5 "bars" on the Airport icon at the top of the computer screen and think that is 100%, 4 bars = 80%, etc. +The "bars" are there just for show+. As you may now have guessed, they tell you nothing about the actual signal strength or noise on the network.
Your AirPort Extreme radiates a signal primarily in an upward spherical pattern from the device...360% degrees, so the signal goes all over the place like an expanding balloon. Some of the signal is absorbed by any close obstructions...a wall, ceiling, cabinet, etc. This cannot be avoided.
A reading of 68% represents a very strong signal. If you think about it, it would be impossible for the computer to receive 100% of the signal that is radiated when a third of it, on average, is absorbed by any nearby obstructions.
But there is more, and it can get complicated. You need to use the Inspector feature (Edit menu) of iStumbler to calculate a much more important measurement than signal strength alone. You need to calculate the Signal to Noise Ratio, or SNR. This is the most useful measurement that you can use to evaluate the quality of a wireless signal. Post back if you want to work through this.

  • Problems with printing since latest Reader update

We've been having problems with form printing since the latest update for Reader came out.  We keep getting:
Font Capture: AcroRd32.exe - Application Error
The instruction at 0x69bf95ec referenced memory at 0x3ff0001c. The memory could not be read.
We can go back in and print the forms individually - but this has become a real problem.  Everything works fine when we removed 11 and went back to version 9!  Any guidance on what to do?

You might try (carefully!) reverting to the drivers found in the original distribution of MacOS 10.4 by following the instructions at:

  • How do I fix broken airport antenna?

I have an older G5 tower, 1.8GHZ, and the airport is not working. External antenna is broken. Does anyone know how to remove the broken antenna?
    < Edited by Host >

If there is any portion of the antenna body protruding out of the connector, you should be able to just pull it out.  You may need to use a pair of pliers, but it should come out.  If you have completely broken off the antenna and only have the connector remaining, then you might be able to pull the shell out with very small needlenose pliers, though the center conductor might be a bit of a problem.

  • Airport Extreme Simultaneous Dual-Band port forwarding broken if only TCP ports with firmware 7.6.1

When configuring my Airport Extreme Simultaneous Dual-Band router, port forwarding is broken if you only specify TCP ports to forward. This is with firmware 7.6.1. What happens is that after you hit the Update button, when the router comes back and you open the port forwarding entry, the IP is still there but the port numbers are missing.
I tried all different port numbers and ranges and nothing would stick if i only specified TCP ports. If i added UDP ports with the TCP ports then it would save them. And if you add a new entry with only UDP it saves them too.
Now this is with adding a new port forwarding. I already have existing ports being forwarded that only have TCP. They are still working. I believe i added them with a previous version of the firmware.
Any one else see this issue? Any ideas?
Maybe i should perform a hard reset and reload a saved config.
    Peace,
    Dan

I haven't seen the issue but you could just downgrade to an earlier firmware:
