10.4.6 clients dropping 10.3.9 server home folder

For over a year our school had many 10.3.x clients authenticating against a win2k AD, and then finding their home folders via AFP on an OS X server 10.3.x. Worked very, very well.
Now we upgraded one lab of our clients to 10.4.6 and the process breaks.
What happens is now a student will log on successfuly (against the AD), their home folder will connect. In the finder they will be able to go to their document folder or their desktop or where ever and all is good. Then they run apps. Now their "Documents" folder in the left edge becomes un reachable. If they opened a file from there, then try to just save again, it will say the file is locked.
However if the use the "Network", then "Servers" then specific stuff they can still see their home folder, and then their documents folder and can save a new copy of their document to the server!
For 90% of the students this means they cannot work. It's too many steps. I can't even get my staff to follow the Network>servers>studentserver>share path.
Especially the save while working being broken. It loses most of them.
Please help!

Have you tried creating a brand new user on your server and seeing if that one works properly? I had a lot of trouble with a few people in the office here but making new accounts for them and moving their stuff across did the trick.
I also have to ask: those people aren't going from 10.3 to 10.4 workstations are they? I had a few machines running 10.3 when I set up the server based home folders but realised that various preferences and such weren't compatible between the two: Mail did all sorts of wierd things. I made sure that those 10.3 machines weren't used for server based people until I could upgrade them.

  • RLDP enabled on WLC causes client drops?

The release notes for WLC code 4.0.206.0 states, "Enabling RLDP may cause access points connected to the controller to lose connectivity with their
clients for up to 30 seconds." Does anyone have more information about this? I don't like the word "may" in there. I need to enable RLDP but I can't afford to have clients dropping. Is this something that will work differently in a new release?

There's no may about it. If clients are on an AP that decides to go rogue-hunting they will be told to "get out of the pool" (de-authenticated) to facilitate their going elsewhere. The same applies to DCA - Dynamic Channel Allocation - part of Auto-RF. If you don't have AP density, clients that use fast roaming, or tolerant apps, you would be best served to turn these features off (or On-Damand).

  • All clients drop association at the same time

We are seeing clients dropping their association with few APs all at the same time and would not connect back for several minutes (or even hours). And all of a sudden, they are start to connect back normally.
Wondering what can cause these kind of frequent client disconnects? Only a section of the building is affected and the remaining areas are fine.
Also, at times, I see the signal strength varies between Excellent and Poor within few seconds.
We are using LAPs and WiSM.
    Any help would be appreiciated.
    Thank you,
    Mohan

Its in the 2.4 GHz band. I have observed this behavior. It works well for a day or two and suddenly a couple of APs only drop all the clients all at the same time. After few minutes (or hours) they are connect back to the APs fine.
This repeats 3 or 4 times in a week.
    Thanks,
    Mohan

    Thanks

CAS shutdown shouldn't cause issues.  If you type the number you see into the Lync search box, does it normalize to E.164 format?  If you type in an E.164 number into the dropdown and try to call that, do you see the number there in black?

  • WRVS4400N v2 WLAN clients dropping

I purchased a WRVS4400N for my home to replace an older router. Since I started using the Cisco router, WLAN clients drop. I can sometimes get them back after initiating a ping to a static LAN IP, but it takes a few seconds.
This issue impacts Win Vista, Win7, Mac, Android, and Linux machines...so basically anything that does WiFi. There seem to be many complaints here with no resolution. Has anyone fixed this problem in their network? I'd really hate to return this thing, but it's becoming unusable.

    Mr. Cameron,
Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center. I am truly sorry to hear about your issue you are having with your router.
Have you called into the Small Business Support Center for help on this? If you have may I have your case number so that I can pull your case and review it to see if there is anything I can do for you.

  • Users on Win7 Clients intermittently loose connection to home folder

My environment consists of 2003/2008R2 DCs, Win7 client machines, and a 2008R2 file server which holds the shared folder for users' home folders. DFL/FFL is 2003.
Sometimes I have this strange occurence where users loose connection to certain folders in their home folder. They can connect to other shared folders on the same file server just fine, but can not connect to their home folder. The home folder is
connected to a user specific folder, under a shared folder (\\fileserver\users$\username). This is defined in the user object in AD. All other network drives are connected through GPO preferences .
Three folders have been redirected to the users' home folder; My Documents, Desktop and Favorites through GPO. And I think this is what might be causing the issue. As all GPO redirected folders are automatically made available offline.
The problem occurs for different users each time, and the problem can only be fixed by restarting the client machine.
    Anyone ever experienced this issue?

First thing, i would ensure system is running with latest patches, service packs, firmware, bios and drivers. Verify antivirus software, may be this can be the culprit which is locking the file during scan. Disconnect the drive & reconnect it back for
one of the user. Ensure DNS is correctly defined in the NIC.
If nothing works, try to use wireshark or netmon to capture the packet to find out where exactly the drop happening can be due to high latency, packet drop etc.
You can try one more thing, if possible have a fresh system & see if it happens on that system too.

  • Windows 7 pro client cannot access folders on server 2003 domain server

I added a windows 7 64 bit client to a server 2003 32 bit domain 3 weeks ago and file sharing was working fine until today, 5/4/12. Now, when trying to access shared folders that reside on the server,
I get the following "access denied" message:
[…folder…] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The user name could not be found.
    Strangely enough...
    The windows 7 client
can open shared folders that reside on the XP clients in the domain
All the XP clients in the domain can access the server 2003 folders
All the XP clients and the server 2003 machine can access shared folders and printers on the windows 7 client.
The windows 7 client can ping the server 2003 machine and vice versa
I can “see” the server in my network list, but when I click on it, I get the same “access denied” message listed above.
So... the only problem is that the windows 7 client cannot access folders that reside on the windows server 2003 machine. There must be some sharing setting that got changed
    by a recent windows update.
Here is what I have done/verified so far on the windows 7 client:
In advanced sharing settings for Home/Work, Public and Domain profiles:
    network discovery is enabled
file and print sharing is enabled
use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers is selected (I also tried allowing windows to manage homegroup connections instead, but the problem remained.)
40 -56 bit encryption is enabled
    In “gpedit.msc” Local Policies/Security Settings:
    enabled the following policies:
Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation
Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users
    disabled the following policies:
Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares
What am I missing? Are there policies on the server that need to be adjusted?
Please help! My business is crippled if I cannot access server files from this workstation. Thank you in advance.

    Hi Jason
I was getting the same behavior after Apple support had me delete some plist files to get Airplay going. I was also getting the following error:
the error occurred while processing a command of type 'writesettings' in the plug-in 'server vpn'
I went into ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Library/Preferences/ and deleted every plist contating the word server. I had to re-set up my server (meaning walk through some intial steps) but all of my settings were still there after that and everything started working again.
Just a thought, obviously try at your own risk but it worked for me.

It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

  • Disappearing folders created by 10.8 client on 10.5.8 server

I have a bizarre problem where a client (running 10.8.n) creates folders on a 10.5.8 server which then disappear for that client. All other clients (running 10.5.n to 10.6.n) on network can see these folders and access them yet the creator cannot. Can anyone shed some light on this please? Thanks Rob

Thanks for your help. I was not on-site when I made the inquiry. It turns out that the Mac client was connecting to the server via an SMB share. This was the root of the problem.

  • How to make Client instantly recieve msg from Server

Hello! I'm trying to make a multiplayer game via Bluetooth (RFCOMM protocol) in J2ME. I already managed to detect devices both as a client and as a server. I also managed to send real-time message from client(s) to server in the following way:
// Pauses thread until Transmission occurs
    StreamConnection conn = notifier.acceptAndOpen();
read_msg(conn); //this is the function which reads the date received from client
But when I try the above as a client I got some exception, but never mind actually.
    Here is the actual problem:
I want to be able to send a message from server to client whenever I press a key so that the client instantly receives that message.
Now the only thing that comes to my mind is to periodically check (i.e. every 50 ms) StreamConnection and watch for some changes like this.
    while(true) {
InputStream input = conn.openInputStream(); // conn is of type StreamConnection
//now I check if the messege received is the new one OR have I actually received a message
// here I pause the Thread for i.e. 60 ms
But that would be extremely CPU heavy and foolish, wouldn't it?
So is there a smart way to register when client gets a message from server?
Please give me some example for client side.
Edited by: leden on Sep 27, 2007 3:07 PM

    One more question.
I have a server and many clients. Let's say I had already received the first message from every client with this piece of code:
    for(int current_client = 0; current_client < MAX_CLIENTS; ++current_client) {
    //notifier is of type StreamConnectionNotifier
StreamConnection conn = notifier.acceptAndOpen(); //wait for transmission to occur
String response = read_msg(conn); //read_msg actually reads the message
Now, at some other moment I want to send a message to one of the clients .
    How could I do that?
Do I have to add this command in the for loop above, perhaps?:
    conn_client[current_client] = conn;
    then simply reply by doing:
    OutputStream output = conn_list[who_I_want_to_send_msg_to].openOutputStream();
and then the code like in my first post
OR this whole procedure is totally wrong?
Please explaim me what does openOutputStream() actually do?

iTunes does not actively scan the media folders.  If you manually add content to a folder, then you must add that content to iTunes manually via the File > Add File/Folder feature.
The only folder that gets scanned is the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder.

  • Oracle 8i Windows Client and 9i Unix Database server

Is it recommended to use Oracle Windows 8i client against Oracle 9i Database server?
Does anyone have an official Oracle link about this?
    Thanks
    Dipak

Only by putting an Oracle 8 database between them... You can set up an Oracle 8 database with a dblink to the Oracle 7 database and connect to that via an Oracle 9 client. Not pretty and not particularly efficient, but it'll work in a pinch.
