10.4.6 Combo Update has slowed my iMac G5

Hi,
Ever since I installed the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update, my iMac G5 (Rev B) seems to be running very slow!! For e.g., when I restart my Mac, the grey spinning ball appears on the blue background for 20-25 minutes.
Additional info: I generally connect a 200 GB Seagate HDD via USB to my Mac.
I have repaired permissions but no help!!
Any other "speed-up" tips?
Please advise,
Thanks in Advance,
Suddha

Some of these steps are of questionable value. Erase w/zero is a security function & applies to volumes, not drives. As such, it doesn't "zero" the drive in any special way, nor are zeros in volume data any safer than any other data pattern if file system errors occur.
If you really want to start fresh, select the Partition option in Disk Utility & reformat it with the "Partition" button. This will rewrite the boot partition info, partition scheme, etc. Be sure to check the "Option" button to make sure you choose the scheme appropriate for your Mac, in this case Apple Partition Map.
It is not necessary to keep your startup drive below 50% usage for good performance. There is some small advantage to keeping individual, very large files (such as video clips of several GB or more) on another drive, but in general, as long as 10-15% or at least 5-7 GB are free on the boot drive, there is little to be gained from a performance standpoint by freeing up more space on it.
The same is true of the clone/reclone step, which is a way to defragment a volume. Tiger does this by itself for smaller files, so unless you have a lot of the large ones mentioned above on the drive, you won't see much if any improvement in responsiveness, particularly with a fast SATA drive like in your iMac.
In this case, the cache cleaning & related steps in Onyx or a similar utility will probably do what you want, together with trashing any prefs for apps that continue to be sluggish & avoiding any login items from third party sources until you get things humming along smoothly.
It is better to try one thing at a time & see if it makes any difference rather than trying the "shotgun" approach, since pinpointing the source of the problem is the best way to prevent it from reoccurring.

• Ios7 update has slowed the system... help !!!

Hi all... I was eagerly waiting to get my hands on the latest apple offering ios7 for my ipad 2... however post upgrade the excitement seems to be fading away... the UI has totally changed- looks pretty new but i guess it has started to take more RAM space and has slowed the processing.. safari doesn't seem to be working effectively as well... i have also tried to free some space by deleting some apps.. i don't even keep multiple apps running and lastly also tried a reboot.. but still no luck... can anyone please assist ?? Is apple coming with an update to faster the systems....appreciate your assistance...

Try closing all inactive apps
1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
2. Swipe up on the screenshot of the app you want to exit.
3. The app will fly off the screen

• Connecting to the update has been connecting for more than 6 hourand is still trying to connect when will it finish downloading the suggested update?s, why? This update has slowed me down way too much.

A window opened when I started that said " We strongly suggest that you update......" I did not want to but each time I turned my computer on the same window pops up with the "strongly suggest" and my computer began to run slower and stop lot. So I finally pressed the bar for more information..But never got any. My computer continued to keep "stop script" and run slow. So after several days of this I clicked on "Next" to download the update and it has been" Connecting to the update server" for over 6 hours now and still running little green boxes in a frame over and over and over. Why is this happening?

My huge annoyance is how Preview converts ai, .eps and .ps files to .pdf files.
It has progressively deteriorated from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard.
In Leopard it defaulted to saving the .pdfs to the Documents folder not the place of origin and would regularly crash if more than a few (sometimes just 2) files were opened simultaneously.
In Snow Leopard nothing was fixed and now the names are stripped off the converted files so that they are all called Untitled.
Apple must have received hundreds of bug reports (I diligently sent one every time Preview crashed) and several feedbacks detailing the problem, to the point I believe persecuting Designers and ruining their work has become a NEXT programmers secret objective.
Except for a couple of minor bug fixes to do with drag & drop in Preview, I am puzzled where the so-called improvements in Snow Leopard really benefit user.

• Yosemite 10.10.2 update has slowed down my iMac and Macbook. Anyone else have this problem?

My iMac and Macbook were operating well until the Yosemite 10.10.2 update. Now, the wheel spins when I try to scroll down on pages, or when I try to move from screen to screen. Programs freeze up more often, needing to be forced to quit, or just crash altogether. Safari has been particularly affected. Both computers are only 6 months old. I close all other programs and Safari tabs, but this does not help.
(iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; specs on Macbook not handy as I post this.)
I have come to dread OS X updates and I'll be careful about downloading them in the future. I am becoming more and more disappointed in Apple as a whole. The last time I called Applecare for help was pointless. I learn more from forums like this.

• 10.6.7 update has slowed my 2010 MBP drastically. Help!

I recently updated my 2010 MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM to 10.6.7 and since I installed the update the performance has dropped massively. Upon booting it takes 7 minutes from when the deskptop appears for the finder and the dock to become available. The only piece of advice I could find on this was to repair permissions which I've done twice to no avail.
Any ideas? Do I need to reinstall OS X from the CD or can I revert back to 10.6.6 some way? Will I need to back-up my hardrive first?
Cheers!

William,
I booted in safe mode and got a 7.5 minute delay from when the login screen apeared until I was able to type in my password. As with the normal start-up (I am the only user therefore there is normally no login screen) I could move the mouse pointer but not click on anything.

• FCP 7 update has slowed my Mac Book Pro

Hi all
First post here. I've just upgraded to FCP 7/ Studio 3 on my MBP running Leopard 10.5.8
When I open FCP it takes an age to load, and it is impossible to use the software, it's like running high end software on a low end PC, sluggish isn't the word!
I have 2 gigs of ram, FCP 6 worked fine. Has anyone else suffered from this or have any advice??
Thanks

I purchased the upgrade and simply ran It and installed it - FCS2 was already installed, but being an upgrade I assume this is right?
I did this on my mac pro with no problems, studio 3 runs fine. On the laptop it is un-useable

• Why has new update totally slowed my computer down?

the new update has slowed my computer down drastically. Sites load very slowly, and sometimes not at all. Then, it continually reverts to "Firefox Updated" page

the password is an old one that I have not used in some time.
Quit Safari.
Open Keychain Access /Applications/Utilities
Select Passwords on the left.
Delete all the keychains for the sites you have trouble logging into.
Relaunch Safari then go to Safari / Preferences, seleect the Autofill tab. Make sure: User names and passwords is selected.
Now select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all cookies or just the ones for the sites you mentioned.
Navigate to a site. After entering your user name and password, you should be prompted to save that data, click Yes. That will create a new keychain for you.
if you still have problems, open Keychain Access again. From the menu bar click Keychain Acces / Keychain FirstAid. Enter your admin password then click Verify. If necessary, click Repair.

• Issue after 10.7.5 combo update from 10.7.4

10.7.5 Combo updater has messed up up all 3 iMac 3.4GHZ i7 SSD 16GB Ram I upgraded from 10.7.4.
-The worse nightmare of all:
Spotlight has become DEAD slow to index main boot SSD with only 45gb used 203 free, it shows 3 days with 10.7.4 it was doing it in less than 10 minutes.
I killed and relaunched spotlight, cleared old index, set only Boot drive marking all other drive including Timemachine with PRIVACY and tried most of the trick, same issue on the 3 computers I can't fix it. (Reset PRAM,Repair Perm run Diskwarrior, Reapplied 1075 combo)
Therefore Timemachine is also now veryslow when Spotlight is trying to index the main drive (even after excluding all drive and timemachine via Privacy)
- In the dock all shortcuts for folders and file from my NAS are becoming faceless with a question mark after each restart. Clicking on them re-activate the icon until the next restart. (DiskStation DS212+ Synology connected via AFP), Synology might have to update their software, I guess.
- Fast User Switching is activated by default top right of menu bar, it can be cleared via User& Group, clicking on Login Option and deslecting Show fast user switching menu.
Any one having problem with spotlight ? Solution welcome.

Same here, in my case:
1. My iTunes works slower than before, it took a while to completely sync my iPhone4s. And try to update the apps, no response after clicking the "download all free updates" as if nothing happens
2. Safari, Try to open a web site, let say www.apple.com.........it didnt load the full site entirely on the first attempt, i always hit the refresh icon to make the job done
3. Last but not least, this completed my nightmare, i've upgrade all of my idevices into iOS6(iTouch 4G & iPhone4s), Siri seems having some problems in answering my questions.....or maybe because of my provider connection, and it freeze when i try to update some of my apps direcly from the phone, luckily iOS6 didnt compatible with my 1st Gen iPad, so i can write this issue into this forum.

• New version of 10.7.3 combo update

As reported by OSXDaily a new version of the 10.7.3 combo update has been provided. This is different to the version that earlier was available. They are definitely different and that can be confirmed through determining the SHA1 of the two versions.
My question is....if I have already successfully updated to 10.7.3 (using the original 10.7.3 combo update) should I reapply the 10.7.3 combo update using the newly posted file?
It justs makes me a bit nervous when there have been two combo updates provided without any explanation as to what people who have already updated should do?
Or is the new version of the combo update just to help overcome the various installatio issues some people have experienced?

I would leave your 10.7.3 as is if you are having no problems. I haven't read any official release by Apple about why a second version of the client combo update for 10.7.3 was released (although I did read the article you are referencing). But, until Apple states why they released a second version of the client combo update for 10.7.3 (if they do), I can't give you a definitive answer as to why this was done.

• System has slowed down considerably after updates from Apple. Is SyncServer the culprit?

I use MacBook with preinstalled OS Leopard since April 2009. I have also regulalry updated my computer system using the Software Update application. However, since my last update on 12th Aug 2011, I have noticed that my system has slowed down. There is long pause between every character I type, delay in switching applications, battery dries out quicker, slow response to every command.
I have started facing this problem after updating following software like iTunes 10.4, Safari 5.0.6, Migration Assistant Update for MAC OS Leopard & Quick Time 7.7 from Software Updater. Although, my OS is still leopard.
I noticed on the Activity Monitor that syncserver is using majority of my RAM and reappers even if I stop the process. Some of its subprocess like AddressBookSync also appears and consumes lot of memory. Is this the problem? Though, I never noticed earlier what size it consumed.
I use Microsoft Office suite for Mac and have also checked and deselected all sync services. Yet, the Process (PID 305) continues to appear in Activity Monitor.
I am no techie, and would appreciate quick help to resolve this issue.
Thanks!

I was just about to write the same problem, but I don't have VMware; my laptop is late 2008 was running Snow Leopard (uptodate version).
I've scientific softwares so probably would require a clean re-installation of ML. I MUST MENTION HERE that those software which were written for PPC will NOT work on ML. Just found out that one of my important softwares version won't work on ML; need $500 to upgrade that software .
Therefore, I'd also want to know how can I go back to SL.
I'll let you know how clean re-installation has worked.

• 10.6.7 Combo Update Slows MacBook Air 3D Performance

Several weeks ago I noticed a dramatic slowdown in the graphics performance of my late 2010 MAcBook Air, and after weeks of futile searching, and falsely diagnosing the problem as SSD degradation, I came across the article below on MacWorld:
http://www.macworld.com/article/158494/2011/04/1067updatemba.html
There, the authors described the same problem I was having, and attributed the dramatic graphics slowdown to a problem with drivers installed by the OS 10.6.7 update. I've done my own testing and found that the bad driver problem is specific to the 10.6.7 Combo Update.
I was able to completely restore graphics performance on my MAcBook Air to waht it should be (ie Portal 2 runs great) by following the steps described by commenter shawnyeager (Thanks Shawn!) in the MacWorld article, which I'm copying here for the benefit of others:
Boot off the MAcBook Air USB media, do an in-place install of 10.6.5 (it's non-destructive) and then download individual (non-combo) updaters for 10.6.6, 10.6.7 and 10.6.7 Supplemental. After applying them, Portal 2 is will run beautifully on a late 2010 MacBook Air with native resolution and 'Medium' to 'High' settings on all graphics options. The difference is dramatic.
Cheers!

It's hard to compare the current Macbook air and MacBook Pro models, I'm lucky to have both and both are superb laptops .. but for different reasons.
The current MacBook Air models are head and shoulders above the previous MacBook Air models. Thanks to the SSD and the cache Boot times and basic disk i/o times are blindingly fast .. noticeably faster than my 15'' Thunderbolt MacBook Pro with 7200rpm drive. Overall CPU and graphcis performance are pretty impressive too. you won't find a faster mroe powerful ultralight laptop.
That being said, the current MacBook Pro's are performance powerhouses whose CPU and graphics performance definitely outclass the MacBook Airs ... but with a bit slower IO, and of course a much heavier form factor.
So, both are great, but it's really a matter of which type of machine you prefer. If you to go for eh MacBook Pro, though I don't think the SSD upgrade with worth the price. the 7200rpm drive is plenty fast and much cheaper.

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

Hi - there are several issues that can cause Firefox to seem "slow". Go through this short list of possibilities, and get back with me:
* Frequent "Problem loading page" issues are likely caused by a firewall. See [[Cannot connect after upgrading Firefox]] for instructions on how to check firewalls. Antivirus toolbars are another possibility to check; see [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
* Slow when loading Flash/Java: These issues are usually caused by add-ons or by outdated plugins. First, upgrade all outdated plugins by checking [http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/]. If it's still slow, see [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
* Slow to start up: This is most often caused by an extension delaying Firefox's startup. See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
