10.4.6 "eats" "PrintingServices" file?

<quote R C-R>
Interesting. I have no such file or folder as "/System/Library/Startup Items/PrintingServices/" or any sign that this is included with my installer disks. Did you restore this file with Pacifist from an Apple disk or elsewhere?
</quote R C-R>
In response to R C-R's quote above, on the now-locked topic "10.4.6 ", I unsprung the "PrintingServices" file from the OS X 10.4.0 "Tiger" installation DVD (i.e., the first GA version). I have had to make up a new topic following the closure of "10.4.6 ".
Pacifist found the file in the "basic" section of the install package, after a very brief search. I have no idea whether this file is necessary or not, other than that PSR reported its abscence. My current thoughts on the subject are that "PrintingServices" has been deprecated/deleted in recent versions, but PSR (5.0.3) had not yet caught up with the fact. Hence the quotes around "eats" in my topic name .
Does anyone else have any info about this file? Or in which OS X 10.4 point-version said file disppeared? Or if it is indeed worth worrying about? It lives (lived?) in the /System/Library/Startup\ Items/PrintingServices directory.
Powermac G5 1.6Uni/1.5GB RAM; Pana NV-GS400; iSight (gone to Apple for repair); EyeTV 200/EyeHome;   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If your printer manufacturer's drivers require this feature, it might be necessary. I would contact the printer manufacturer's support to ask the question.

  • Logic 7.1.1, Tiger 1.4.2 EATING Audio Files!

Ever since upgrading to Logic 7.1.1 Logic is now having intermittent problems specifically with cutting portions of audio. When a cut (Cmd-X) is performed in the audio editor, I receive an unexpected EOF error (-39) and the end of whatever audio file I'm editing has now been OVERWRITTEN with the contents of the clipboard (cut). If you catch this in time, you can undo it but if you edit large numbers of files in batch it's a pretty nasty gotcha. I'm going to have to duplicate a LOT of work to fix this. I've got someone else also in my shop, with an identical (hardware wise) machine who is experiencing similar difficulties.
I have tried dumping Logic preferences, rebuilding audio units, importing one audio file at a time into a new project and the results are the same.
Also, the supposed 'speedup' of edits/overview updating turned out to be a huge slow down.
Two thumbs down on this upgrade!
Now that I've ranted. Has anyone experienced similar problems and have you found any solutions to them?

Any recommendations on a disk defragmenter?
No, you misunderstand me, i wasn't suggesting you should defrag, i was asking if you had defragged.
Keep a healthy amount of free space on the drive and you should be OK. (For optimum drive performance, about 1/3 should be kept free anyway) Defragmentataion is not necessary, and if you do want to, just copy the drive content to another drive, wipe, and copy back again.
The other thing I was concerned about was if you had all your audio on your startup, used up all the space and the swap file started eating into your most recent files. (though it's usually prefs files that get chewed up first.) But i can see from your reply that you are not in that position anyway.

I think it does that for QuickTime if you don't define the lineStride value in the VideoFormat (lineStride = pixelStride * width).

  • Preview Destroys Files On Save

Every once in a while, Preview will find a JPG that, after I edit it, it will decide it should destroy on a save--it nulls out the file, keeping a lock on it (I cannot overwrite the file even if I close Preview). It's consistent with the file--if it eats the file once, getting a new copy from backup and editing again will do the exact same thing on a save. Has anyone seen similar behavior?
There is another bug with Preview I'm going to post a different question about involving keywords; it may be related, but I doubt it. Preview has been very, very buggy in Snow Leopard.

  • Best Setup for Lion Server Time Machine Backup with Drobo?

I've been thinking about this a lot, yet I don't feel I have a good solution for this, so I'm going to throw it out to the community.
I have a home server setup using a Mac Mini running Lion Server 10.7.2 with a Firewire 800 Drobo attached.  The Drobo is used for both Time Machine backups and files.  I also have a Powerbook G4 running Leopard and a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion 10.7.2 which connect to the Server and the Drobo wirelessly thorugh an Airport Extreme.
I want to use Time Machine to have all of my computers back up to the server & Drobo, but realize there are several ways to go, each with their pluses and minuses:
    Server Time Machine Backup:
+ Centralizes backup process, rules, and other elements
+ Currently Mac Mini is backing up to the Drobo correctly using this process
+ Have setup size limit on Server backup so that it does not eat up file space
    - Would combine laptop backups with server backup into one sparse image: this would lead to the computer with the largest backup needs taking up too much space
    Client-Driven Time Machine Backup:
+ Allows for customization of backup processes by computer
+ Can setup specific space requirements for each computer
+ Backups are separate from each other
    - Wireless backup from laptops to Drobo is not functioning currently
Any thoughts or experiences on how best to set this up?  I tend to do most of my work on the MacBook, hence I am concerned about it having it's backup space eaten up by the server, but that may be more of a theoretical issue than a real one.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Well I'm not sure if I am following you but I will explain how I set mine up. When I got the Drobo I inserted 2 drives and selected the highest available volume I could (16TB). My drives are 4 TB each and I knew I would soon add 2 more. Then Drobo did its thing and prepared these drives. The Drobo shows up on my mini desktop as an external drive. When I log into my server from my other computer I can see the mini server volume and the Drobo volume. I can access each no problem. They act as regular volumes. Soon after I added the second two drives and everything stayed the same meaning I could still see and access the Drobo on the desktop of my mini. So it sounds like you used the Drobo dashboard to partition yours for two volumes? Are they both showing on the desktop?
"Maybe the Drobo needs to be mounted on the desktop to be considered AFP feature enabled." I could be wrong and hopefully someone will correct me but I think the Drobo (or volumes) have to be mounted on the desktop to work with AFP.

  • Preview Will Not Edit Or Delete Existing Keywords

There used to be a severe bug in Preview for Snow Leopard where no keywords could be added or edited--while you could add them via the "info" box, on save they would disappear and not be saved. Well, that was fixed in a patch update--sort-of. While I can now add keywords to JPGs that have never had any, and I can edit or delete those same keywords, I cannot edit or delete keywords on JPGs that have been added by someone else using a different mechanism. For example, if someone sends me a picture that already has keywords, and I want to remove them and add my own, Preview lets me make the changes in the info box, but when I save, it reverts to what was there before. These files are unlocked and I have write permission to them.
Interestingly, I cannot even get these keywords to change when I use a third-party tool, like the command-line exif-tool. So the problem may be at the OS level. (Although a tool like Pandora will let me change them, but I believe it does a complete rewrite/remove of edited JPGs, since the 'creation date' is brand-new on any edited JPG).
I have a separate question about Preview eating files on a save, but that's not related directly to this problem--I have never seen Preview eat a file where I've tried to edit an existing keyword. It just discards my changes. I have been very disappointed with the reliability of Preview in Snow Leopard. Anyone have any thoughts?

Glad I could debug this software myself. The problem is simple: Preview will allow edits only of IPTC keywords in JPEGs in the APP14 segment. But it DISPLAYS any keywords set in an RDF segment. In other words, if the JPG has an RDF segment, Preview will display all its information from there--but it will not update it if you edit it. I guess I'll open a bug.

  • Recently played

Just downloaded iTunes 7, and contrary to popular opinion, I like the new interface. Doesn't bother me at all. I was curious, however, to find out whether the "Recently Added" playlist had been eliminated. I don't have it onboard and I was wondering if I'd either inadvertently deleted it or if it doesn't exist anymore.
I was also curious as to why some of my music tracks seem to be missing in action. They were all in iTunes 6 yesterday, but with the new upgrade, some of the tunes are gone from my hard drive!

You like the new interface? Well it'd be a boring world if we were all the same I guess...lol
The recently played playlist is still there. If you want to make another one, you can follow my instructions here.
As for iTunes eating your files, I have no idea I'm afraid. I gather there are some teething troubles being had; in searching for the above link, I found five pages of complains about iTunes 7 - all in the last 12 hours!

  • Sony HiDef Camcoders

Will FCE4 import via USB 2.0 or is it still the same old can only import via Firewire? All of the new Sony HD camcorders only have USB export capabilities. If so, then is using a program such as Voltaic the only way to import Sony's AVCHD files into FCE? This will most surely direct me on which camcorder to buy in the future when I got ready to go HiDef.
What HiDef hard drive camcorders that record in 5.1 are out there to consider, consumer grade wise for me to look at if the Sony way does not work out?

  • Help!! As I was scrolling through my library, one folder after another had the photos in it turn to "static"!  Lots of streaks and dots!  What is happening and how do I save my photos?

As I was scrolling through my Aperture library just now, I saw one folder after another turn the photos in that folder into garbage!   They have lines and dots and nothing recognizable - what in the world is causing this?    Can I get my photos back?    It almost looks like a virus eating my files - could it be - and if it is - is my entire computer in trouble?   HELP HELP HELP!

Interesting that you posted this Cleaning up photo library about one hour before this post. I'd say there is a good possibility they are related.
Without knowing your system, OS version and Aperture version and what you were doing to 'clean up' your library there is little we can do.
My photo library is a mess.  I have moved things around a lot in a futile attempt to organize them, now I have a lot of placeholders with no files attached.  How do I clean things up?
I suggest you restore from your backup and forgo the cleaning operation until you have a better grasp of the situation.
BTW the Masters folder is organized by date and time of import at least in Aperture 3, if you are using 2 then all bets are off,
Good luck with Apple support, if you want to try and get this sorted out post back the information I requested above.

  • Why does Premiere Pro CS5 eat up space on my C drive when it conforms video files?

Hey everyone. I have Premiere Pro CS5 with the latest update installed. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on a 120GB Corsair SSD drive. I have set my scratch disk video and audio previews to a different hard drive (F: drive). I have three questions:
    1. Why does Premiere eat up space on my C drive whenever it conforms the video files I import into my project?
    2. Where on my C drive can I find the folder that holds all these conformed video files that are taking up space on my C drive?
    3. How do I prevent Premiere from eating up space on my hard drive when it conforms the video files I import into my project? Is there some way to move whatever folder is eating up space on my hard drive when Premiere conforms the video files and tell Premiere to conform the video files on another hard disk so I don't lose precious space on my C drive?
Okay, that's four questions but, can some please help me on this? Thanks.
    Okay, that's five questions.

    hello,
i think you need to relocate you media  cache files to a separate drive other than your c: drive.
in the hardware forum, Harm has done a wonderful job at advising on HDD setup, i think it mentions relocation
of swap file, media cache, etc.  all which are defaulted to your c: in your user profile
after relocating to different physical drives (all without partitions) performance usually increases
Generic Guideline for Disk Setup  by harm
hope this helps til someone else answers more
    good luck...

  • What can be done so that these files do not eat up all the disk space.

    Dear Adviser
This is NOT a bug report or an enhancement request.
We are looking for advice on a customer support call.
We are using iPlanet Webserver 4.1 SP7 and iPlanet Directory
    Server 4.12 on Solaris 2.8.
We are checking to see if there is any engineering
documentation or quick pointers on LDAP database file
sizes and cache file sizes that may relate to a
    reported problem.
Thank you for your time and co-operation in advance.
We have been working on a TIBCO/Portal Builder customer
issue that does not seem to have guidance in end
user documentation. This is related to a significant
increase in LDAP and cache file sizes (which at this
point do NOT seem to affect any performance). Is this
something that you are aware of from your QA/performance
tests? The problem seems to have suddenly cropped
up and we are attempting to isolate the triggerring event.
We started with the possibility that it is
    a. Solaris Platform issue
    OR
    b. LDAP issue
We have done several experiments to isolate specific
issues as described below. We have researched
Sun/iPlanet web site and technical sites on the net.
Currently, we believe that the LDAP database size is increasing
because the Portal has been configured with pages
that have a lot of "Personalized" panes. Users are visiting
these pages, and getting automatically subscribed to these
panes, which add corresponding entries in the LDAP server.
Please find below the listing of all the files (from LDAP
DB directory) which are growing very fast. Kindly advise what can be
done so that these files do not eat up all the disk space.

This may be perfectly normal behavior for the LDAP server. If some application is adding a lot of data to the server, the database will necessarily grow. You can look at the access log to find out the IP address of the client, the BIND dn of the client, and the operations from that client. Perhaps this will help you narrow down the culprit.

  • ASL files be eating muh shiz

    Hi everyone,
I got this problem that seems to keep wanting to bug me.
I've always had these problems where my HD seems to start eating it's own disk space for no apparent reason. And then it rectifies itself, again, with no readily obvious reason.
I've been advised to check the console and find any errant log files, but nothing seems to leap out at me as anything I should worry about.
Anyway, it seems this time around I have these .asl files that keep appearing in my /private/var/log/asl folder. what are these and can they be deleted? I understand that I should not be playing around with things in my private area(!) but these files seem to have no discernible purpose or source.
Any other tips on helping reclaim HD space would be great too!
    cheers XD

Do you have Norton AntiVirus installed? Lots of reports of issues there, including huge block of disk space going walkabout.
Activity Monitor, (AM) in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities, may help you spot a process that is writing logs excessively. For it to work, you have to make minor changes to the way AM displays. By default, it displays "My Processes" in a pull-down in the upper part of the window. Change this to "All Processes" to get the big picture. In the columns, highlight the column header "%CPU" to sort by how much of the CPU any given process is using.
Use the computer normally for a while, then shut down any apps you have used so the computer is at idle, running only the background stuff you can't control. Then relaunch AM and see if any single process is using over 10 percent of the "%CPU. Note the names of the guilty process and post it/them here and we can make suggestions.
I used AM like this to find that a game demo was causing the system logger to continually write, ballooning the log file for its usually size of ~250k to over 60MB. It wasn't so much the disk space that was missing but the time it took the logger to update and save that size file. It dragged my MBP to a crawl even when the game demo was not running.
