10.4.6=EVIL!

This is the only OS X update I've ever had since Jaguar which rendered my Mac completely useless.
The machine:
Original Dual 2GHz G5, 1.5 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, Radeon 9800 SE (256 MB), running Mac OS X 10.4.6
The symptoms:
Several days after I updated to 10.4.6 (which apparently proceeded without errors):
1) Boot up hangs at blue screen for at least 5 minutes...consistently (tried 5+ boots).
2) Random freezes. The mouse will move, but windows won't move and everything (menus, launchers, etc). is absolutely frozen for a few minutes before un-freezing. No beach ball on the mouse cursor, no audible activity from the HD or fans.
3) Above can also be induced by trying command-tab application switching. Nothing shows up on the screen when pressed, and the above freezing occurs.
4) Generally poor performance when not "frozen"
I haven't installed anything or made any system changes since installing 10.4.6, and like I said, it worked fine for a few days, then it just completely froze and I had to reboot, and the listed problems ensued consistently.
I've seen others with similar symptoms - anyone have any solutions short of re-installation? Re-installation is a Windows-esque solution, and IMO should never be brought up here. If it becomes a more common recommendation on these forums, it's time to jump the Apple ship.
EDIT: Also found that the spotlight shortcut (command-space) freezes the system as described above, as does clicking the spotlight icon in the menu bar.

Hello Jake,
May I suggest a good practice - when you install OS-X and all your apps and are happy you have a properly configured & well running system, make a backup of your boot HD and save it to another hard drive, preferably an external one for the added safety of your backup.
Once you have the backup disk image (dmg), it only takes about 20 minutes unattended to do a full restore of your system exactly as it was at the time you made the backup. No installing from scratch required. This has been a lifesaver to me when some update or other didn't go right. (Of course, you would also need to regularly back up any data you store on the boot HD - that too is a good practice and if you ever do actually restore this way, the entire HD would be overwritten.)
You will need a bootable external FW drive or another Mac in order to do this. But you can make the backup with Apple's Disk Utility or any number of good backup programs. I am partial to Mike Bombich's NetRestore and have used it on hundreds of machines over the years. Works like a charm.
I don't find anything Windows-esque about OS-X. That's one of the biggest reasons I made the switch a few years ago.

    I have yet to receive either of these.  I understand my Destiny purchase still says pending (although I received my $10 rewards for Madden 15 within a week of me picking up purchase).  When should I receive the $10 rewards certificate?
    Also, I pre-ordered Evil Within months ago and I see now that anyone that pre-orders get a $10 giftcard.  Shouldn't I still get this?
    If anyone can help and correct this, it would be greatly appreciated.  My member # - (removed per forum guidelines)
    Thanks!

    Not a problem!
    Whenever a BestBuy.com order is cancelled (or returned), any funds held for that order are automatically refunded to the original form of payment. This process typically takes 2-3 business days for gift cards, while reward certificates are applied back to your My Best Buy account in the same length of time. For debit and credit cards, the exact timeframe required before the funds are available again is dependent on the card's issuing bank.
    If you no longer have the original gift card, then we can issue a replacement with the remaining balance. To request a replacement, simply give our gift card support team a call at 1-888-716-7994 or leave us a message in the BestBuy.com board. Additional info on gift cards can also be found here:

  • My iBook is being evil

    My iBook only turns on for the first 2 tries, and then I have to wait for about a day for it to work again. When it does work, it runs slowly and freezes frequently. It has the following stats:
    Power PC 933mhz Processor
    32mb VRAM
    384mb RAM
    Mac OSX 10.3
    Does anyone know why it's doing this? I'm typing this on my iMac because the iBook doesn't like me. I tried to install Tiger but it froze while it was verifying.

    Hi. iBooks aren't really evil, just recalcitrant sometimes if they're neglected
    How much free space do you have? If the iBook is difficult to start try Starting up in Safe Mode.
    Note that Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup.
    Once you are, hopefully, started into Safe Mode select your HD, usually called 'Macintosh HD' unless you've called it something different, then File, from the menu bar and Get Info (Command + I).
    You should have at least 10% free space, if you have substantially less this could be the cause of your problems. Start by emptying the Trash. Then consider what clutter has accumulated over the years that you don't need any more and Trash it, or back up to another Medium then Trash it. Again, empty the Trash.
    Restart normally to see if there is any improvement.
    Post back with the HD size, (Capacity), Free Space and Used for more advice.
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • BIG n EVIL Finder Bug!

    After "converting" our last co-worker to Mac, she found (in astounding 45 Minutes OSX) an extremely evil Finder bug.
    Don't try it, it's no fun to correct if afterwards:
    In a normal OSX Finder Window, you can change the name of the home folder link in the left part of the window with a right-click-order "change name of usershortname" (or something like that, I use a german system).
    IF you do this, your home folder will NOT be renamed but a new pseudo-user folder will be made. Your files remain in the old folder, but your system thinks the new is the right one, which will produce some nice errors. All new files (prefs etc.) will be put in the new folder.
    It just took me an hour to restore her personal files (freshly imported from her old pc - in the middle of which she changed the name of the link because OSX changed her Umlaut-Name falsely to a Non-umlaut-Name ...) (another bug, by the way, but a small one)
    - by the way: Any idea how to change the user - shortname?
    Xian

    Christian
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
    This bug is well known, and a nuisance!
    I can't change the short name of a user account
    Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 or later: Return to Default Desktop, Apparent "Loss" of Home Directory
    To change the short name:
    Mac OS X: How to Change User Short Name or home directory name.
    There is also a ChangeShortName application which is available via MacUpdate or VersionTracker.

  • Shadow Warrior and The Evil Within $10 Gift Card Offers

    Hi,
    I was just wondering if there is an end-date for the $10 Gift Card offers with the pre-order of Shadow Warrior and Evil Within.
    I want to pre-order both of them before release date and get the $10 GCs, but I don't have the funds at the moment.  Am I able to wait until just a few days before release and pre-order?  Or will these $10 GC offers expire at some point before the game releases?
    Thanks!
    Tyler

    Hello Tyler,
    That’s a great question! Receiving a $10 Best Buy gift card for pre-ordering either Shadow Warrior or The Evil Within this week is certainly a stellar offer. It makes perfect sense you’d want to take advantage of these promotions while they’re still live, so I’m more than happy to assist in providing the timeframe in which you’ll be able to do so.
    Since these promotions are part of our Weekly Ad for September 21-September 27, I’d say that you likely have until Saturday, September 27th to get your pre-order in for either game and take advantage of the $10 gift card promotion. I certainly hope you’re able to get your pre-order(s) placed in time!
    Thanks for posting and please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Why I'm asked for my Master Password seems troublesome.

    Hello Matt, fellow archaeologist :)
    Security updates are essential on any and all software, specially your browser. Mozilla is working to streamline the updating process as much as possible, but you shouldn't neglect your own security for a few seconds of "wasted" time.
    I hope you do the best for yourself.

  • ICal on Leopard possessed by evil spirit

    Is iCal on Leopard inhabited by an evil spirit? Apparently.
    Why else would iCal refuse to let me do what I want IN MY OWN CALENDAR and instead try to impose its own will?
    If someone sends me an invite, I get an email and click through to iCal. Now an entry is in iCal. But, there is a catch. If I want to accept the meeting but change anything about the entry (for example, give it a heading I can recognise, or fix the time of the meeting which iCal is usually getting wrong these days), iCal has decided I am not authorised to changes things IN MY OWN CALENDAR. No, the only way I can change it is to Decline the meeting (which I don't want to do, as it sends a decline message to the meeting organiser - and I am not declining).
    If I want to just delete the draft calendar entry (after looking at it), iCal has decided I am not authorised to do that either - IN MY OWN CALENDAR. So I can either leave the wrong info in my diary or send a decline notice to the organiser (which I may not want to if I am not declining).
    If I am in an email with an appointment mentioned, Mail now has nifty little buttons to let me create an iCal appointment for that entry. But only for the date/time iCal thinks (which is invariably wrong, due to time zones). I can't amend the date/time of an entry I am going to create IN MY OWN CALENDAR.
    So, I can only conclude iCal on Leopard has been possessed by an evil spirit who wants to take over control of what I do IN MY OWN CALENDAR.
    Very frustrating. This isn't what Mac software is meant to be about, surely.

    G'day Lisa,
    I have experienced the same frustration - and had it resolved by installing GCALDaemon (see my other post on this at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6921704#6921704).
    This uses a Google Calendar as the middleman - but it works well, and enables you to edit in both places (and across ical versions). In fact you can edit your Google Calendar and have it show up on both Macs... (which stomps all over .mac calendaring).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Whether private getter methods is Evil?

    Hi!
    I was wondering whether it is bad or good to use private getter methods in a class rather than directly accessing private fields?
    For instance, I have a getter method for each Swig component used in my program:
        private JButton run;
        private JButton getRun() {
             if (run != null) {
                  return run;
            run = new JButton("Run");
            run.setToolTipText("Run");
            run.setIcon(new ImageIcon(ResourceHelper.getImageResource("run.png")));
            run.setEnabled(false);
            run.addActionListener(new ActionListener() {
                public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent event) {
                    MessageDialog.showPleaseWait(TestRunnerUI.this,
                        "creating logger", new Runnable() {
                            public void run() {
    // bla bla bla
            return run;
        }And so for each swing component....
    But for example I have such a method:
        private void disconnect() {
            mRunner = null;
            mLogger = null;
            log.log(Logger.INFO, "disconnected");
            tree.setModel(defaultModel);
            tree.setEnabled(true);
            save.setEnabled(false);
            saveAs.setEnabled(false);
            load.setEnabled(false);
            options.setEnabled(false);
            run.setEnabled(false);
            breakTests.setEnabled(false);
            connect.setEnabled(true);
            disconnect.setEnabled(false);
        }which changes properties of a lot of components...
    I don't know whether I should use there private getter methods or not. From the design perspective it seems I should but it also adds some overhead I suppose...

    I use accessor methods when writing persistent
    classes and javabeans. The key is not to use them by
    default, only when required. IMO this does not
    violate encapsulation, it hides implementation. Agree. Inside the bean itself you shouldn't use it's accessors either.
    The
    main benefit being that should you need to refactor
    the way a value is retrieved or set you have
    localized the changes. Holub will tell you that if
    you are using an accessor method to retrieve a value
    from an object, in order to do some computation on
    that value, you should move the computation into the
    object's class instead (hence "getter and setter
    methods are evil").Summarized, the public accessors are evil when the code behind does not only return/set the encapsulated value. Solution: refactor, split and rename them to "createSomething", "lookupSomething", "buildSomething", or so.
    In this case the topicstarter was talking about private getters tho.

    My stops because of the wrong answer to the secret question, and I want to use it for evil application from Apple Store?

    Hello mr sami,
    Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your security questions.  I found an article with some useful information if you cannot remember the answers to your security questions:
    What should I do if I don't remember the answers to my Apple ID security questions?
    Try answering them at least once to see if you can get them right, even if you are not sure you remember the answers to your security questions.
    If you are confident you can't remember them, try one of the following:
    If you have three security questions and a rescue email address
    sign in to My Apple ID and select the Password and Security tab to send an email to your rescue email address to reset your security questions and answers.
    If you have one security question and you know your Apple ID passwordsign in to My Apple ID and select the Password and Security tab to reset your security question.
    If you have one security question, but don't remember your Apple ID password
    contact Apple Support for assistance. Learn more about creating a temporary support PIN to help Apple confirm your identity when you contact Apple Support.
    Note: If you have forgotten your password and answer your security questions incorrectly too many times in a row, you will be unable to try to answer your security questions for a period of time. During that time you will not be able to reset your password and will not have access to your account.

    This is not because your query will use index that it would be faster, and the example which Tom gave is really explicit :

  • Bloatware and Censorship Evil

    I understand the counter argument of rooting your phone, but it’s actually illegal under the DMCA (See MetroPCS vs Virgin Mobile) and it completely misses the censorship issue.
    If I want to watch porno, uninstall yahoo finance bloatware or engage in some politically sensitive subject I should be able to do that. It’s our hardware and we paid for it. Restricting our ability to make our own decisions is an poor move.
    Hopefully the FCC steps in as consumer advocates and forces LTE carriers to remove these restrictions.. I hear they’re trying but it’s always an uphill battle against some people with evil ideas.. (enters no more unlimited data.)

    A 1) Read your User Guide, do a search on Google, read the info on these utilities on the Toshiba site. I've never had a problem finding what each utility was for/did when I really looked for it.
    A 2) I wouldn't uninstall anything. At sometime or another almost all the utilities are needed/useful. Instead use MSConfig.exe and remove the check marks in the 'Startup' tab from the utilities loading there that you do not use. Use services.msc to stop and/or disable the Toshiba services you do not use. Both these methods make it easy to re-enable or restart these utilities, should you find it necessary.
    A 3) See A1 and A2
    A 4) Not that I know of. What is necessary or unnecessary here is actually a very subjective thing. It depends on the user.
    A 5) This a peer support forum. This is just other users and Toshiba owners trying to help each other out. Please contact customer service, write a letter to the CEO, write a review on a consumer report site, etc, with your complaints.

  • Evil little SQL server "feature"

    I discovered the following the hard way after creating a view.
    SQL server will take the following (invalid, I believe) sql code:
    select a, b, c d from table /* note the missing comma */and convert it to this:
    select a, b, c as d from table I found this because I made a typo in my query - I left out a comma in the select list - and couldn't figure out what was wrong with the data. To my knowledge, this is not ANSI SQL and will not work with any other db - I even tried it in Access.
    Am I wrong in thinking that this is purely evil? To illustrate, by changing the column names in the above query:
    select id, name, fatal_dose  safe_dose from medicationbecomes
    select id, name, fatal_dose as safe_dose from medicationOpinions?

    Hi,
    No, this is correct. This is a short form for c as d. The statement select a,b,c d from t conforms to Transitional SQL 92, Core SQL 99 and Core SQL 200x(draft). Note that I changed table to t as table is a reserved word in SQL (92, 99 and 200x).
    Try the SQL Validators at http://developer.mimer.com/validator/ to find out it a statement is standard SQL or not.

  • Database Components Considered Evil

    This is the most important adage since "GOTO considered harmful". Small applications can benefit from the convenience of binding data sources to forms and using SQL based queries in components. Making that available is an industry must; it is also just this side of evil.
    Creating many small applications or a greater-than-small application should never fall victim to such a temptation; rather, in my opinion you should always abstract the database in data models that hide the underlying persistence strategy entirely. That way you manage data access in your data access package and publish APIs to the rest of the team for getting simple or complex models.
    Just started using JSF (very, very promising technology that stands on the shoulders of midgets) and was diasppointed by the availability of UI database binding. It's a marketing reality that is also present in JSTL.

    The advantage of DB Components, is you can just plonk 'em when you want them and they know how to display themselves automatically and follows the Encapsulation OO strategy. This been said, its a very bad idea to have sql statements within a DB component.... what happens if the database changes?
    BUT, the best of both world solution is to have a Model - View component (Notice, no Controller!) - Where, instead of the view component containing the SQL, it contains a reference to a default model , and it is this model that contains the SQL to retrieve the data. The outcome is the same, just plonk the component on the screen, and it sorts itself out , however, the database remains abstract to the 'view' , the SQL is encapsulated within the model.... The database changes, it only requires changes to this default model for everything to continue to work.
    So, using this methology, we can end up with a panel (the parent View) , containing lots of child views (Model-Views). These child views could also contain their own imbedded model-views. This is the composite pattern, and is mentioned by GOF.

  • Is IBA a serious creation tool or just a necessary evil/iBooks gatekeeper?

    Over the last few decades, I've taught myself QuarkXpress, Photoshop, InDesign, and many other programs, so I understand learning curves. But I'm not sure I've ever been quite as frustrated as with IBA. Perhaps this is a result of its being "Apple-intuitive" (in other words, it will make no sense until you think the way we want you to think). Perhaps it results from having no competition. Or perhaps my experience in creating print and epub with professional tools is getting in the way.
    Or perhaps I should simply start from scratch, despite having many hours into my first IBA project.
    I'm curious how others approach this thing with an existing book that you want to put in IBA form:
    Are you able to use IBA on its own (in other words, if I master IBA's Apple-intuitiveness, does IBA promise a productive workflow, or just more quirkiness?)*
    Do you import IDML files (I didn't get very far with this; guaranteed to crash InDesign)?
    Do you create an epub, import it, and tweak in IBA? (my best result so far)
    Or do you just send the project to someone in India and let them figure it out?
    I don't mean this to come off completely as a rant, but at this point I'm really questioning whether I'll ever be able to develop a productive workflow with IBA. It really seems like a necessary evil/last step to the iBooks store with a fixed layout epub.
    * I really appreciate answers to my questions elsewhere, but basically none of my issues have been solved. I can't replicate the "fixes" people give me.

    dr_box wrote:
    I see now that InDesign launched fixed-layout epub export last summer, so that for me is probably the route to go for what I'm trying to do, and skip IBA altogether.
    Yes, I think InDesign is a good choice unless you really need the interactive widgets that iBA provides.   Plus your book will be readable on any platform.
