10.4.6 fixed my help viewer!
Yep, it did.
After months of repeatedly going through the routine on Dr. Smoke's site, and it repeatedly failing on Mac Help, it finally works. The first time, it took about 30 sec (on dialup) to open each category, but now it works fine.
One quirk -- there is no spinning wheel while waiting, which may make you think it's not working.
You wrote: "site indeed says it fixes the viewer..."Actually, the exact wording is"Resolves an issue that could cause Help Viewer to sometimes display a blank window."It does not say that the issue was in Help Viewer itself, merely that it could cause Help Viewer to display a blank window. My surmise is that something else was amiss, either in the OS or the Apple Help Sever, or both, that would result in Help Viewer showing a blank window.
As I noted earlier, none of the files contained within the Help Viewer bundle changed from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 when I compare the files' dates. So, it looks like some other OS problem was causing the Help Viewer problem. Perhaps a change in Web Kit.
To see the Contents of the Help Viewer bundle, open System > Library > CoreServices. Control-click on Help Viewer and select "Show Package Contents." Drill-down in the resulting Contents folder.

AppleWorks Help (Help Viewer 2.0.1.1(v79.1))
How do I fix the Help Viewer for AppleWorks 6.2.9 to work properly? I have just installed AppleWorks 6.2.4 and upgraded to version 6.2.9. The Help Viewer seems to work intermittently. The links in the viewer have worked one time and only one time. I am new to AppleWorks and I want to learn the basics. Do you have any thoughts?
Thank you, Ivan
PowerMac 8500 Mac OS X (10.2.x) Sonnet G4 450MHzI don't think you'll find a resolution within AppleWorks -- the problem is more likely a Help user-interface problem.
In a Finder window open your user's "Library >Caches" folder. From there, move the "com.apple.helpui" folder to the trash, then try AppleWorks Help again. If that doesn't resolve the problem, then you may need to trash some helpui preference files, as well. -
When I open itunes to play content I've already purchased and while attempting to view trailers for movies in the itunes store, I receive a generic error message from windows, and I'm directed to reinstall the latest version of itunes. Not a fix. Help?
after perusing other subjects with playback issues:
this is the fix:
-Launch Control Panel - Double click Quicktime, If you do not see quicktime, look on the top left side of control panel and switch to classic view. This will then allow you to see Quicktime.
-Now click the advanced tab and click on Safe Mode GDI Only, Apply, then ok. -

Help viewer does not work after update to 10.4.4
Since updating to 10.4.4 my Help viewer does not work, and all of the troubleshooting fixes suggested in other threads have not had any success in resolving this. I've noted that when I go to Users>Library>Documentation>Help there is no mac.help file - can someone tell me if that means that I've lost the file altogether and need to reinstall it? I get to the first screen of the viewer, but the links from there don't work. Thanks for any help that you can provide!
Thanks for your suggestion. I downloaded OnyX and ran the cleaning function. After restarting, I opened Help and once again the first screen appeared fine. But again most of the links did not work, though those under the "What's New" heading did work. I might add that I had previously tried a variety of suggestions posted in another thread, which included deleting from the caches folder in Home>Library several files such as com.apple.helpui and help.plist in the Preferences folder. (As noted in my previous post this evening, I also created another user but that also did not have any effect.) Any other ideas? Thanks

I am trying to install iTunes 12.0 on my Windows 7 PC to sync my iPhone6. I am getting error message, "Item already exists" on installation of iTunes 12.0. Apple has no fix. Help???
Item or object?
For "Object already exists" or "Access denied" errors when installing try opening Control Panel > Programs and Features > View installed updates then checking for Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2918614). Uninstall if you have it, then reboot and try installing again.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Help Viewer no longer works!
Not sure when this started, but now when I choose the help menu (at least from Finder and iChat), it takes a while for the viewer to bring up the proper library and then the links in the window are dead. In addition, the search feature just results in the spinning cog.
Not life threatening, but annoying.

Drive Utility Help Viewer "does not know how to handle selected URL"
I have Drive Utility 10.5.6, according to . I'm trying to reformat a FAT32 partition on an external drive to Mac OS X Ext. Journaled in preparation for using SuperDuper to back up my Mac HD boot partition. For a time, which seems to have passed, now that erasing the partition has been done. The Disk Utility Help wouldn't work. Instead of putting up topic information, I got a message saying "Help Viewer does not know how to handle selected URL", followed by an reference to an html file that allegedly existed inside a set of folders inside the app. Where, of course, Finder cannot see. Once the erasing was done, Help seems to have come back. I tried Apple Support, but could only get a reference to OS 9 Appleworks macros not working in OS X. No help at all. Is this a question? I don't know. Help is working now. But for a while it was very annoying. It must be one of those little windows glitches that no one ever bothered to fix.
In order to change a FAT or NTFS formatted drive for use with OS X you will need to do the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you have an Intel Mac and can partition the drive using GUID then you can have FAT32 and OS X partitions on the same drive.
As for problems with the Help viewer see:
In most cases doing the following will restore the Help Viewer:
1. Trash the following three files, if extant:
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.help.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpui.plist
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist
2. Trash the /Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpui folder.
3. Empty the Trash and Restart.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on the Help Viewer for additional suggestions. -
Help Viewer is an issue with InDesign CS6
Would anyone happen to know if the Help Viewer is an issue with InDesign CS6? Even with a manual install the Help feature launches without issues the first time and won’t launch after the second time. This is the message we are receiving on Windows 7:
“Help viewer is not installed check your internet connection and reinstall InDesign”Anup R. wrote:
Can you try the option mentioned in 2nd para of the reply, if you are connected to internet?
You can try changing the preference "General Settings" > "Display Local Help content only" to "No" so that application launches the online help content.
-Anup.
YES! It does help.Thank you very much. I changed the setting yesterday but side tracked before I see the online content works. So in general scope, yes it takes me to the online help center, which gives me options for more "community" answers. So yes, thank you for making me look further.
However, I really was a fan of the local help that looked like and felt like the user manuals produced by Adobe, not just blogs, and more message boards. So I am still partially dismayed that I take the time to download and update the local help files, but can't use them. And wish Adobe would just fix the problem, so I can have immediate access to user manuals without having to surf all over for answers. Perhaps this is a novice thought, but I liked reading it in manual formats provided by the amnufacture of the software.
Thanks again though for the help and it will just have to get used to this method. UNLESS you can tell me good news of something else I am missing? -
I have an intel mac notebook and it works great -- except for the help viewer which has gone from very slow in responding to not responding at all. I followed all the tips for resetting the viewer (deleting help p lists, etc.) and that will fix it temporarily. But everytime I restart my computer, I have to delete those same files again to get the help viewer working. I finally went to console.log and this is the message it is displaying but I need help in translating it. Please Help! I'm an ex-windows user and this is my first mac and I'm really dependant on the mac help.

Search in Help Viewer always returns "No matching help topics were found".
Hi!
I'm running 10.3.9 on 14" iBook G4.
Recently re-installed OSX from CD after a hard disk replacement. Help viewer was fine on the original / old installation of the same version number of OSX.
The CD installs a version earlier than 10.3.9. Possibly 10.3.4? Cannot recall... is this important?
After HDD replacement, went through all the updates fairly rapidly, and arrived at version 10.3.9. Excellent! Except one thing (there may be more, but I've only discovered this so far!)... searches in Help Viewer return the same message irrespective of what I search for. I type the search string (e.g. "dvd" ) in the search bubble in the Viewer window. The message is as follows:
[bouyancy aid with question mark logo] No matching help topics were found
I have tried the usual things, without success, of:
- Removing the Famous Four cache and preference files/dirs.
- Repairing permissions. This repaired a few 'permissions'.
- Rebooting.
I think the icon of the bouyancy aid is a comic irony, but very well suited to my situation. Anyone out there with any suggestions on how to fix, please?
RSJExcellent pointers, thanks!
I haven't quite got it working, yet, but have got it to a point that is better than nothing.
Very peculiar -- discovered that, after trying many of the troubleshooting ideas without success, the solution was to hit the "back" icon on the viewer to get to the list of help topics satisfying my search criteria... cannot work out why. It would appear that, for some reason, the viewer is skipping the page with the help topics, and going directly to the "No topics found" page. Curious. I am wondering if one of the above activities (from your help pages) may have helped.
Anyway. Thanks very much for your help on this, and your *very* rapid responses.
Yours most impressed,
RSJ. -
When I type in a help topic nothing happens. Also, when I go to the home page it nothing happens when I click the links. This is really annoying becuase I want to ask a question and I can't get the help viewer to work.
See my "Troubleshooting Help Viewer" FAQ for comprehensive advice on fixing problems with Help Viewer.
In particular, the specific sections therein may prove helpful:
- If Help Viewer links do not work, see the "Help Viewer links do not work" section of the FAQ.
- If Help Viewer displays a blank window, see the "Help Viewer displays a blank window" section of the FAQ.
Good luck!

What Help Viewer Component Enables Index tab?
A customer of ours has a problem with any .chm help file not displaying their index contents properly (showing up as blank). In our app, we have a Help | Help Index menu item that opens up our .chm's index tab. This ends up crashing the entire application.
Similarly, accessing the help file directly in Windows Explorer (outside of our application) works fine until he goes to the chm's Index tab in which case the HelpViewer crashes.
Another similar symptom: sometimes the Index tab's contents will be blank and then a crash occurs when he attempts to close the help viewer.
The index tab problems are not unique to our help files however. So I think there's likely some Windows component missing on his system that makes any .chm file with an index tab display a blank tab or causes crashes.
Error Messages consistently mention a problem with:
ModName: itircl.dll
(Sorry rest of the message is in Swedish)
Has anyone heard of this problem and know how to fix it? Should customer just re-register the .dll? Or is something else needed?Hi there
There are several DLLs that sometimes become corrupt or get clobbered. I think you would be well advised to download MJs Diags from the link below:

When you search for something in Help Viewer for which there is apparently no relevant help topic, the program just keeps on searching, and searching, and searching, and searching, forever and ever and ever. It never just stops and gives you a logical response like "no topic found". This is really a classic of poor design which has persisted in every incarnation of OSX.
Is there some reason why Apple has never fixed this, or is the project manager for this bit of code some sort of sadist????Wet Baloney,
This may be a symptom of the ubiquitous Help Viewer problem.

I updated my desktop system last night, going from Lion (10.7.5) to Mountain Lion (10.8.2).
Since then, Help Viewer (and helpd) have been completely non-functional. Every time I launch Help Viewer, I get a pop-up window showing that helpd has crashes. I'm not having any other issues at all - everything else seems to work fine.
I've reviewed numerous examples of how to resolve this problem, including clearing all caches, resetting the help viewer by removing the related plist files and caches, checking all internet plug-ins, removing old & unused Safari extensions, etc.
Still, every time I launch Help Viewer, I get a crash report from helpd and the Help Viewer tells me it has no content to show.
I do not want to re-install the OS unless there is absolutely no other way to resolve this issue.
I would appreciate any suggestions or feedback.
Thanks,
