10.4.6 intel vs powerpc

so... i have this disc which says it's for X 10.4.6, but it's not the variety for intel, it's the variety for powerpc. i have an imac which has 10.4.6 on it, intel chip... when i put the disc in and try to run the installer, it states the the software cannot be installed on this computer. the packaging says a powerpc g5, g4, g3 is required. no mention of the intel chip. SO.. what i am trying to figure out is.. where is the intel installer for macos 10.4.6. is it on a different disc, is it on this disc somewhere that i don't see?
also.. the whole reason for this is that I need to run X11 in 10.4.6. right now, it simply crashes when it starts, so i figured i would reinstall from the DVD. we run a software which includes the X11 package from a previous MacOS, so i thought it might have overridden it. however, when install the X11 package from the install DVD, it still crashes. additionally, when i try to install the X11 SDK from the DVD it states 'there is nothing to install' even though X11 SDK files are not present on the machine.
what is going on with this? any help please?

The 10.4.6 installer that came with your iMac should say iMac (Intel Core Duo) or (Early 2006). That's the only one you can use with your iMac. The iMac Intel and G5 versions of the operating systems are different. See this article:

X11 in previous Macs was installable by installing the Developers Tools or X11 from the Installers folder in the Applications folder.

Intel and PowerPC Final Cut project compatibility

I have two computers, a laptop and a desktop, that I use with Final Cut Studio. Both run PowerPC chips. If I purchase a new computer with the Intel chipset, will Final Cut projects be able to go back and forth between the Intel and PowerPC computers? I spend quite a bit of time editing on the road with my laptop then get back to the office and copy the project file over to my office computer. When going back on the road, I copy the project file from my office computer and put it back on my laptop so I can keep editing while traveling.

There is no compatibility issue between PowerPC and Intel as far as Final Cut Pro is concerned. You just have to make sure you have the same version of Final Cut on all machines, because older versions of Final Cut Pro will not open files created in newer versions. You don't have to worry about the processor.

External Hard Drive Partitioned to boot both Intel and PowerPC -and backup

Have been remiss backing up drives, do it sporadically and have had a few close calls and am now trying to upgrade my skills.
I work with 3 computers - 2 intel MBP Core Duo (one Leopard, one Tiger, difference Ghz, screen size, generation) and PowerPC G4-running Tiger. I read recently you can partition a drive and format one as a bootable drive for an intel, the other for a powerPC.

I have a further question or questions: I saw an external drive for the Mac 1000GB at OWC!!! Yikes, there is also one for 1500 GB!!!
I wondered how many partitions I could make - can I create a bootable drive in three separate partitions, and use those as a backup drive for each? Money is an issue, I can't afford a drive for each computer, so this would be the most economical.
Could I create a 4th partition, just to move photos, music libraries without their being computer specific (e.g., check share library?)
Is there any advantage in creating a boot drive that just starts the computer, but keep the backup files separate, or is cloning the drive then doing incremental backups the best so it is both a boot drive and a backup?
This is beyond my skill set and I am still fuzzy about backup software and boot drives and how they all interconnect - so far I have just been saving desktops and font folders to my oh so slow USB EXTERNAL HD (200 MB) periodically, or specific key files. Is there anyone who can walk me through this?

Partition the drive using Disk Utility, I'd recommend one bootable clone partition per machine, one partition for archiving (data you want to keep but not on a machine), and optionally one partition for a Time Machine backup for the Leopard system. Use the Apple Partition Map (under options in the Partition tab). Note that you'll read that Intel machines require GUID partition scheme, but that's only for installing the OS from a DVD, not relevant for cloning. You'll want APM to boot the PPC machines. Bootable clones can be sized equal to the internal HDDs being backed up, or slightly smaller. Partitions should be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Personally, I have two external drives set up identically, with partitions for bootable clones of a PPC machine with 10.4 and two Intel machines running 10.5, plus an extra partition where I store movie projects. I use SuperDuper to update the bootable clones. I have two drives because I store one offsite (at work). Every few days I bring an updated backup drive to work and the other one home.

Powerpc error when installing on intel mac, powerpc error when installing on intel mac

Trying to reinstall some software that used to work & no I receive the following error: “Spyder3Pro_Installer” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. This happened on another application I was attempting to install as well.

Thank you for the reply, but I was able to fix it. I'm sorry, I guess I didn't explain it well. The apps were not for a powerpc & the mac is an intel. For some reason the apps thought it was a ppc, so I'm not sure what happened. I had Mountain Lion installed & the apps were working fine until the crash. Just trying to put everything back & I get this error. There is another app that I get the same error on, but not sure if the fix will be that easy.

I'm running OS X 10.3.9 & have ITunes 7. Got a IPhone4 for xmas & ITunes 7 won't talk to it. So I need to upgrade the OS apparently to be able to upgrade ITunes. Of course ITunes 10 is for intel macs only, so the question is--what's the latest version of OS X that I can get to upgrade ITunes so the IPhone 4 will sync? Whew that was a lot....

I think others have answered most of your questions, but you indicated that "iTunes 10 is for Intel Macs only" -- that is not actually correct, you can certainly run iTunes 10 on your G5 PowerPC. What you need to do is:
(1) upgrade to 10.5 operating system
(2) upgrade to iTunes 10
While Apple doesn't officially sell 10.5 anymore (Apple sells 10.6, but 10.6 won't install on your G5 PowerPC), if you call their 800 number and explain that you need it to use your new iPhone, they may be able to sell you a copy from old inventory. Alternatively, some retailers are still selling older inventory 10.5 install DVDs but you need the version that installs on any computer, many 10.5 disks are made for a specific model only.
Before you do either (1) or (2) above, make sure you have enough memory as indicated by Apple in their system requirements. If you need more memory, it is inexpensive to upgrade.

Intel vs PowerPC

I have just moved a Final Cut project from a PowerPC-based G5 to a Intel-based MacBookPro. It seems that when I now capture HDV footage on the MacBookPro the files use Little Endian byte ordering, whereas on the G5 they used Big Endian.
I've read that this can be a problem when it comes to rendering and exporting, but I'm not sure how serious it is.
Does anyone know what the repercussions are of having a mix of Big and Little Endian ordered files in a single FinalCutPro project?

Personal Processes: Intel vs PowerPC

Is anyone running with only Intel processes? Have you noticed a difference in performance and stability when compared to having some PowerPC processes as well?
I've managed to reduce my PowerPC background processes to just one - still gathering my verdict on overall improvement...

the macbook is really sluggish...
since i migrated applications and all, do i now have
the powerpc version or the intel version, of say,
itunes, idvd, etc...
i guess the question is on the "universal" apps, are
there 2 different versions for powerpc and intel, or
just one true universal version, and how do i tell
which version i have ?

Use Get Info (Cmd-I) on the application. At the top of the "General" section it will show "Kind: Application (PowerPC)", "Kind: Application (Universal)" or "Kind: Application (Intel)".
Any applications from your old Mac will be PowerPC or Universal depending on the age of the application. e.g. iLife 6 is universal, older iLife is not.
Any application that came installed on your Intel machine should be Universal or Intel.
There is currently only one type of "Universal". It means "PowerPC" and "Intel". If Apple decides to support additional processors they may be more types.
For any PowerPC applications, you should see if the manufacturer has upgraded to Universal versions. They would run faster.
How much memory do you have on the MacBook? PowerPC application have to run via Rosetta and will be slow if you are low on memory.

Any computer running Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7 has an Intel processor. You may not be able to get the free version of NeoOffice to work on 10.7; if you run into trouble, try OpenOffice instead.

Moving songs between computers: Intel and PowerPC

Hi - I would like to copy my songs from my iMac to an older Power Book. I use Time Machine on the iMac (which won't work on the Power Book). What is the simplest way to copy the songs? Thanks to help from another post, I also have SuperDuper backup on my iMac; not sure if that would help - guessing not, since I think you format the external drives differently if using on an Intel Mac vs a Power PC. Thanks in advance for the help.

Intel or PowerPC?

Hi, this isn't a really a "Using your Intel - based iMac" question, but I don't know where else to put it.
I'm looking to buy a second hand mac, cheap I know. The option has come up of buying a 1.83 Ghz Intel, or a 2.1 Ghz Power PC. I know if they were the same speed it would be the intel, but assuming the other specs are the same, which would you go for?

Unless there is a huge difference in cost between the two I would go for the Intel one. Computers go obsolete quickly enough and buying a Power PC model already puts you that much further behind. Then again, you have to look at what you are going to use it for. If I was buying one to use for web surfing or email and simple word processing or looking for one to put in a kitchen and store recepies on then, if it was cheap enough, maybe I would go for the POwer PC model.

Compressor network rendering from Intel Mac to PowerPC Macs

Has anyone had any experience utilizing a Power PC G5 render farm for Compressor? I have the option of setting up a render farm utilizing up to 15 PowerPC G5s from an Intel Mac. Due to system limitations the Intel Mac will be running FCP 7 with Compressor 3.5 while the G5s are to be running FCP 6 with Compressor 3.0.
These 15 G5s are going to be sent to surplus if I don't take advantage. But I don't want to have 15 computers sitting around that won't render.
Any suggestions or experiences with such a situation?

I've had some experience using both Intels and PowerPCs in a QCluster. The hardware doesn't matter much, as long as all of the software is the same. Since you're using 2 different versions of Compressor and QMaster in this particular cluster, you will have compatibility problems. Also, depending on how you're connecting these machines, distributed encoding may not be a good solution.
A couple of weeks ago, I was testing a similar setup for a work group here. They had some extra iMacs that they wanted to network together to encode some Image Sequences. I ran some tests, and found that encoding without a cluster and with just a local cluster inside of just one MacPro was twice as fast as adding other nodes via ethernet.
But the basic answer to your question is that all service and controller nodes must have matching software versions. This is explained in greater detail in .

Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 support Macs with Intel and PowerPC processors, so it's normal that some Mac OS X 10.5.8 users have got an Intel Mac and others have got a PowerPC one. Mac OS X 10.6 and later only support Intel computers

Running an Intel Mac on a Wireless Network with other Power PC Macs

I know changing the Airport to WPA encryption will allow an intel Mac with either Mac OS or WinXP OS to access the airport.
If you have powerPC Macs also, what encryption will allow both Mac (intel and powerPC) and WinXP to access the airport?
Right now either WEP for all Macas or WPA for intel Mac (Mac & WinXP).

If I recall correctly, an update to Windows XP (assuming you're using Windows XP) added WPA support to the existing WEP support. The same applies to Mac OS X.
Regardless, if both OSes are up-to-date they can use either WEP or WPA. But WEP and WPA should not be used at the same time for the same wireless network. Choose one and set your Airport first (create your infrastructure) and then set all computers to connect using that same security (add computers to your infrastructure). I suggest using WPA becuase it is more secure than WEP.

Where do I purchase single user copy of Intel build Mac OS X Tiger?

Hi,
I am planning to reinstall my intel Macbook pro, and I bought a copy of Mac OS X tiger from campus store today.
I did not mention that I have needed an intel build, thought Apple would put intel and powerpc build together.
Obviously I was wrong. The one they gave me is for build for powerpc only, would not work on my mac, neither can not startup from boot.
The disc is issued under label: MA453Z/A.
Before I go to the store tomorrow, I checked the online store and they only sell powerpc build version(MA453Z/A). Where can I purchase Intel based single user Tiger copy?

Apple doesn't produce/sell a Universal Tiger retail install package since Tiger has shipped pre-installed with all Intel Macs.
You need to contact Apple/Apple Care to request a replacement install package for your Mac model and build which will also include all additional software included with your Mac purchase which is not included with a Tiger retail install package. And keep this copy in a safe place this time.
The Leopard retail install package will be produced/sold as Universal since Universal will be required.
