10.4.6 loses desktop
Hello. My sister sent me this:

I updated software and installed the new one for os x. I restarted when it told me to. However, after this all my things on the desktop disappeared. I can get to the files if I go through finder but this is really annoying. It won't let me drag them either. what has happened?
I can't find any help in the users' guide either. Please help!
Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions? I'm running 10.3.9, so can't try it myself.

When she says 'things on the desktop' does she mean files or aliases?
Anyway, she might try trashing the finder preference file: com.apple.finder.plist
If she enters this into a finder search it will find it for her. Once binned she needs to log out and back in again.

Why do i lose desktop background on my extra monitor
When I turn my mac on I hace normal desktop background on both the system monitor and the peripheral monitor i have added through an hdmi cable and mini display adaptor. Hwoever, when I go to use the machine after the screen saver has been on the desktop for the perihperal monitor is blank??
Probably an issue with the adapter or HDMI cable not being able to transmit. I would recommend using either VGA or DVI, you won't notice any degradation in video quality.

Recently had to install a new hard drive after mine went kaput. So OS X was installed on the new one and I lost all my preferences. When I restart the machine, it asks me to log in and then for some reason my desktop image choice has reset to the default galaxy photo. I live alone and nobody else uses my computer so I don't need the login screen, and I'd obviously like my desktop to stay the same. Does anyone know how to adjust this please? Thank you for your help.
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups
Click on Login Options > unlock
Select your User from popup to automatically log in.
You can reset your Desktop image in System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver. (this is Mavericks name. Lion could be slightly different)
If your preferences aren't sticking....
1 Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.
2 You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
3 In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
4 The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
5 At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled 'Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs'. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac. Notice that 'Spotlight' starts re-indexing immediately. Your computer will be slow until Spotlight completes indexing your files. -
I have a HP EliteDesk 800 gi sff computer that runs win7 64 bit. Seems like about once a week somtimes more often I will lose desktop icons the seem to be only network shortcuts but they will dissaper from my desktop. Any one have an idea on how to fix this?

My new 160N is connected to desktop (hard-wired) and then wireless to laptop. Strangely, I lose internet connection on desktop while computers both see each other and laptop continues to have internet connection. When I lose desktop internet I get message about IP address conflict.
I have current firmware and reset router several times. I have IP address set to auto. Range is excellent on router. I'm running Vista.Kevj (below) solved my problem. Downgrading from build 11 to build 8 is the answer. It's unbelievable that the techies I called at Linksys didn't tell me to try it. They finally told me to return defective router. Linksys could have saved all their time, my aggravation and countless returned routers. Mine was ready to be returned - Had the RMA no. and box ready. Everything running great now.

Clicking Fan sound and a Scrached CAse
I've had my MBP for about 6 months and recently the fan has been clicking. It's a dull clicking sound when the fan spins faster.
I sent it into the local Apple Store and when i got the computer back there were scratches all over the bottom and sides. Also parts of the bottom case bulge and there is this sharp edge that i cut my self on. I figured its not that bad at least the fan noise stopped.
It came back. they never fixed the fan noise. so i'm sending it back again. Any one else have this problem and what do i do if it still clicks after i get it back!

I supposed mine was worst
1. After arguing with the APPLE STORE I bought the machine from about heat and fan noise like plane, APPLE later issued the recall of logicboard.
Machine came back with the case NOT properly put back.
2. Then complain and they missed the point of simply fixing the case and put another logic board
3. DVD stuck and screen refreshes and lose desktop data and come back after 2 secs. I was insulted by one of the staff at Regent Street, London
4. Case NOT put back properly again and disc stuck again.
All as I remember faintly.
and then the rest is history enough is enough.
And finally came Jeroen te Rijdt (Europe) and his team who kindly tried to understand my problem and issued the replacement. Thank you.
But at the end of the day, machines are machines and they do have problem be it the first release or 2nd rev, etc!!!
APPLE does make the best looking + working MACs!!! -
The computer I use for Itunes (my laptop) only has XP so I can't use ICloud:(
I have a desktop that operates using with Vista.
I downloaded 10.5 and sought to sync my two iphones and two ipads with the desktop in order to use ICloud. However I got warning messages that if I synced with this computer that had none of my extensive library of apps, music, podcasts, etc. would be on it, I would lose it all.
I did authorize the computer. I knew enough to do that but am terrified that I will lose everything that I have accumulated and still won't be able to use ICloud.
Isn't there a way to do this? Shift my library FROM my devices to the desktop?
ThanksThis is a tedious solution, which is stupid! And some users report an inability to reauthorize a computer after an "en masse” deauthorization. I can’t believe Apple doesn’t provide a list or menu to find out which computers you’ve authorized! Obviously, APPLE knows (or else they couldn’t tell us how many computers we have authorized)--so why can’t they give us access to that information about our own computers??!!!
And for an already-authorized computer with a hard drive that’s since been replaced and upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, would it be recognized as a “new computer” and require authorization? Would its previous incarnation (i.e., with the old hard drive and OS) be considered a separate computer? Some users report they can’t authorize a computer after an OS upgrade because of that. Can’t believe we have to do such a bass-ackwards kludge! -
I have just installed 10.7 and bootcamp is no longer visible on my desktop, nor can i start computer in windows mode. I started the bootcamp 4.0 upgrade assistant, but don't want to wipe windows 7 out and lose my data. Any suggestions?

My old desktop crashed. My new desktop has the most recent version of Firefox and the new sync feature. Unfortunately, none of my bookmarks from the old desktop/Firefox transferred to the new desktop. My android phone (GS3) and android tablet both still have all of my bookmarks, but I cannot get them to sync to the desktop. I have read (and reread) the instructions for opening new sync accounts for all devices, etc. so that they are all compatible and sync will work again. I am afraid that if I do that, I will lose all my bookmarks from my android devices, and then they will be lost forever, which defeats the whole purpose of setting up new sync accounts. Can you confirm that if I open new accounts on all devices that I will not lose my bookmarks from my phone and tablet, which now have the only record that I can access to recreate them all manually (god help me)on my desktop if that is my only alternative?
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, that doesn't solve my problem. I have given up and just re-entered my bookmarks manually to my desktop computer.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

Can I delete desktop files or will I lose them?
I have downloaded various files which end up on my desktop. For example, my update for mountain lion, the downloads for Skype, and also have what looks like hard drives as Mac WD which is my external drive and what looks like a drive which may be my DVD drive. I also have various documents that have files on my desktop and one called library.XML. Can I put them in the trash to get them off my desktop or will I lose the entire file on my computer? I want to clean up my desktop and every time I download something a new file goes there. But I don't want to lose the files. What can I do?
it sounds like you have chosen to save your downloads to the desktop instead of the downloads folder.
you can change this setting by opening up safari/preferences/general and choosing to save downloads to the downloads folder.
to answer the question posted, as long as the items on your desktop have either been completely installed or if it's been placed somewhere else in the mac to be saved (such as pics put into iphoto, music into itunes etc. ) it is safe to delete it from the desktop and empty your trash to finish removing it from the mac so it no longer takes up space. -
Every time I launch the creative cloud desktop app it says I need to update. When I follow the prompts to update I lose my taskbar, etc on my windows 7 machine. I then have to restart windows explorer to get the desktop back, but the app still now says I have to update. Circular problem - please help.

Hello. I'm having problems getting into my Audition 2.0 prog. PC is telling me it is unable to locate component audipp.dll. Have been advised to reinstall the prog and make a copy on my desktop (so as not to lose valuable files). Any ideas how I make that copy? Many thanks world.

That doesn't sound like 'advice' to me - the desktop is the last place you want to save anything!
All you need to do, if you have custom settings in Audition is to do what it says in this AudioMasters thread, uninstall Audition using the Windows uninstaller (you don't need to deactivate) and reinstall it. You won't lose any work, even if you made the mistake of saving it in the Audition install folder, because the uninstaller will only uninstall the program files (it has a list) - anything else gets left. -
Toolbars in my desktop windows lose functions
The Toolbar in my various windows on my desktop (not THE Toolbar at the very top that contains Finder File Edit View Go, etc.) lose their functions after I have been on for a while.
For instance: the Back arrows disappear, there is no View or Action option and worse: my Get Info does not work, neither the icon I placed when I Customized Toolbar nor when I right click and click Get Info.
I've run Repair Permissions. The problem goes away if I Restart then occurs again later.
Any suggestions?

BillHi Bill, sounds like the windows you are referring to are Finder windows? If that's the case try this:
Navigate to ~(yourhome)/library/preferences and trash these two files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
