10.4.6 May Break Compatibility with FW 800 drives

After testing a number of drives on three machines running 10.4.6, I believe that there is another Firewire mounting bug in OS X. Not sure what it's limited to but I am fairly certain it affects Smartdisk Firelite drives with FW800 ports (only), and that it seems to affect towers and not laptops.
If anyone has a FW800 Firelite drive that they formatted prior to 10.4.6, and can test it on a G5 or G4 tower with 10.4.6 installed, please report your findings back here. Similiarly if you have trouble, try the same drive on a Powerbook with 10.4.6 and see what you get.
After all this time I still can't believe there are so many hang-ups with FW mobile hard drives. Very frustrating... and expensive when you're replacing them, trying to find one that works.

Hi, Deadline.
You're not anywhere near the point where I'd recommend an Archive and Install. That's one of the "solutions of last resort" and isn't the kind of recommendation one should provide out of the gate.
Let's try the following:
1. Rule out some common troublemakers: Run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
2. Let's see if Console can tell us more: Immediately after the problem occurs check the ends of these Console logs for clues.
Good luck!

  • Lost compatibility with external hard drives

I've updated to the most recent version of Mavericks and now my external Seagate back up hard drive isn't usable. It's recognised at connected in the disk utility but I'm not able to use it? Any ideas on compatibility issues?

I'm starting to think I might not have made myself clear at the beginning (my english might not be that good, sorry for that ;-))
First of all, thanks for all your advice, I really appreciate it.
secondly, I think I need to make something clear: I don't plan on creating a RAID0 with my internal drive or anything like that. I just want to put two 1TB drives (both external!) together because I will have two of them to spare when I get my imac (as they are currently built into my PC) and I need at least a 2TB drive as a time machine backup drive.
So my choices are: Buying a new 2TB drive and doing nothing with my current 1TB drives or just putting the 1TB drives together in RAID0 and using them for backup.
Also, as I said before, it doesn't really matter if my RAID0 fails, as it is only my backup drive (so I still have everything I need from there on my actual iMac). So if my RAID0 fails, I just replace it with a single 2TB drive (hopefully they will be cheap by then) and let time machine create a new backup on the new drive.
Anyway, I think I see the problems with RAID0 now and when I get my imac I will certainly think about what to use as a time machine backup drive. Not sure what I will do though. But I think I go for the RAID0 until one of my 1TB drives fail and get a 2TB drive then and use that from then on.
    Thanks for all your help
(BTW, @BoyHowdieDoo: I'm also not doing it for the performance improvement or anything, I don't really care about that since it's only a time machine backup drive)

  • Mac Pro Compatibility With Older SATA Drives And DVI Connectors

I soon plan to replace my 5 year old G5 with a new Mac Pro and need two questions answered so that I will know what options i have for the transfer of older data and apps. The Apple web site for the Mac Pro includes the following paragraph which gives me reason for concern:
Your Mac Pro includes four drive bays, allowing you to configure it with
up to 8 terabytes of storage using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives, up
to 2 terabytes of storage using high-performance solid-state drives, or
any combination of each type of drive. Configure each drive bay
    separately.
Does the phrase "using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives" mean that the Mac Pro will ONLY work with 3Gb/s drives or that it performs best with 3Gb/s drives?
I currently have two internal SATA 250/300 GB Maxtors (Maxtor 7Y250M0 and Maxtor 6B300S0... both are 7200 RPM but I don't know the data transfer speed). Ideally I would get a Mac Pro with a single 1 TB drive, move one or both of these older SATA drives to the new computer, one temporarily and the other permanently in order to transfer data and Apps to the new machine. If this is not possible then the new machine will need to wait until after I get a new larger FW external drive to use as a data transfer medium (I had planned to do that anyhow). I need to do some advance planning for this so I need to know what to expect in advance. I noticed this possible wording ambiguity on Apple's description of the Mac Pro long ago, but now I need to find out the answer for sure. Apple, you need to be more specific with your words.
Can anybody answer this question for me?
My second question regards display connectors. Does the standard (no bucks added) display card include a standard DVI connector or only the newer Mini-DVI connectors. I think I see a standard DVI connector in the low res picture of the back of the Mac Pro but am unsure. My 5 year old Apple display bit the dust a year ago and I had to replace it with an HP 2009m display (mumble grumble) which does use a standard DVI connector. A new Apple display is too rich for my blood so I plan to continue using the HP display for now and need to find out if I will need a display adapter to go with it.
Many thanks to anyone who can answer these questions authoritatively.
For anyone who asks why I still run 10.3.9 on my G5, I can only answer response speed. New OS versions always act like a lead anchor on a machine with their added overhead and Tiger really does feel like a ball and chain tied to me... it just does not reaspond as fast as I do. I look forward to the speed of a new machine.

Does the phrase "using 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s drives" mean that the Mac Pro will ONLY work with 3Gb/s drives or that it performs best with 3Gb/s drives?
Any commercial sATA drive will do just fine. 7200 RPM is not a requirement.
WD "Green" drives have caused user complaints about "long delay until ready" when installed inside a Mac Pro, but are fine for backups.
You are making the leap from PowerPC to Intel Mac. Eventually, you should re-initialize your old drives to GUID partition table for best responsiveness.
Migrating your System will not be possible. Use the pre-installed System or Install a new System on a GUID-partitioned drive with the release DVD in the box.
Migrating your Applications is a Bad Idea. You should plan on re-installing all your third-party Applications from their release discs.

  • IMAQdx 14.5 breaks compatibility with IMAQdx 14.0?

    Hello,
I deployed an application that used IMAQdx 14.0 to acquire images from a GigE camera and save them to disk. Nothing fancy.
Recently, I upgraded my development PC to IMAQdx 14.5. As a result, the executables I create no longer run on the same deployment PC, even though I didn't change the code:
Upgrading the drivers on the deployment PC removed the issue.
Is this inteded? I would've expected things to still work, since I'm only using features that were already present in IMAQdx 14.0. (In contrast, DAQmx retains backwards compatibility: I can have DAQmx 14.5 on my development PC, while deploying to a PC that has DAQmx 14.0 drivers installed)

Yes, absolutely. In 14.5 there is a new Get Image2 VI that is the one on the pallete and has some new functionality. The old Get Image VI with the existing functionality still exists in the library as well. The reason for the breakage is that they both use the same Buffer Mode enumeration typedef, but the old entrypoint used by Get Image didn't handle the new enumerations properly. The updated Get Image VI in 14.5 (for compatibility) links into a "fixed" entrypoint that handles all the new modes as well.
In general, any old VI code is expected to load/run identically between 14.0 and 14.5, and new code developed with 14.5 (using new Get Image2 from the palette) would have new functionality as well. The one broken case is if you built an EXE with 14.5 and then tried to deploy to a system with 14.0. Given that you could have unexpected runtime failures due to differences in functionality, we took a route that prevented this from deploying at all.

  • 3.0 breaks compatibility with 2.2.1 apps?

I've put a couple of apps on the app store, and now that I've updated my phone to OS 3.0, I've noticed that the developer builds no longer run on my phone. This only occurs with apps that I compiled for 2.2.1; apps that I compiled for 2.0 work perfectly. This leads me to believe this isn't a provisioning issue.
I'm curious if this is an indication that my apps will no longer work on the phones of people who purchased them. I really hope that it isn't, because people normally don't like to have their apps spontaneously stop working.

I'm curious if this is an indication that my apps will no longer work on the phones of people who purchased them.
Have you attempted to satisfy your curiosity by checking for crash logs via ITC?

  • Motherboard upgrade, question about compatibility with existing hard drives etc.

Hi, I currently have an K8N Neo2 Platinum socket 939 board, 2 gig of OCZ Platinum PC3200 DDR400 RAM, a Lian Li V1000 ATX case, an AMD Athlon 64 3000 processor, 2 Sata 1 hard drives and a TAGAN TG380-U01 380W power supply. All this stuff is from around 2005.
I'm thinking of upgrading my board to a MSI 870A-G54. Obviously I'll need new memory and a new processor, but my question is this - will I still be able to use the Lian Li case, and the Sata 1 hard drives/power supply with the above board? Also, does it have onboard graphics or will I need a dedicated video card?

     Case, HDD - Yes
     Onboard graphics - No
PSU, maybe but probably not. Something with more power would probably be wise to get. What PSU you get would depend on the CPU & graphics card you get.

  • Fix for Mavericks compatibility with Lacie external drives yet?

My last attempt to upgrade to Mavericks caused my 2 Lacie external drives to become unrecognisable to my mac. Update hung up too so I lost everything...luckily I had a third back up with CCC that saved me. Im just wondering if there is a fix for this now. I got no information or help from Lacie.

Exactly the same here. Installed Mavericks and La Cie no longer shows in Finder and Time Machine reminds me that no back up has taken place. As an iMac newbie where do I go from here. In my Win PC days I always backed up to an external HD on a scheduled basis without this sort of problem.

  • HT3275 Time Machine full - compatibility with external mirrored drive???

A friend of mine is using a 2TB mirrored drive (so 999GB capacity available for back-up).  He is getting messages saying time machine cannot back up as drive is full.  As Time Machine is meant to delete older back-ups as and when space is needed obviously drive should not become full.
Apologies if I am writing complete rubbish - as this area is a little over my head . . . but I was wondering if it is possible that the mirrored aspect of the drive is not backing up in the same way Time Machine does (i.e. not deleting older back-ups / have a different archiving method) and is possibly becoming full when the main back-up is not.
    Thanks

To OSX (and Time Machine), a hardware RAID set is just a drive, like any other -- it has no idea there are 2 (or more) physical drives in the box.  The mirroring is done by the hardware in the RAID box.
You need to have your friend look at #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, and see which message he's getting, as there are some differences depending on the situation and what version of OSX he's running.
If that doesn't clear it up, have him use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from his logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • SATA11 is it compatable with all controller cards

I want to add 500gb HD's to my G4 Giga and know I need a SATA controller card, I am considering this one card pic is this card compatable with SATA11 hard drives?
    Powermac G4 Giga-ethernet Dual 1.2ghz 100bus 2 Gig Ram 2xHD 80gb+120gb USB1+2/FW   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   wireless network

Thanks Japamac, can I go through this deadhead style...
You can install as many OS's as you want. When you
set your Startup Disk Preferences, you are able to
select the OS that you want, as well as the disk that
    you want.
Does this mean I have to make a partion thing on the same disk for each (even the same) OS?
Do I use the original install disks to do this?
Another way to select startup disk/OS, is to boot
while holding the Option key. This will open the
Startup Manager, and allow you to select which and
where you want to boot from.
This is the screen I remember from my Apple Care Plan Help Desk days
It is a good idea to have a second (and third)
    bootable disk in your system.
Is the third disk on a partion thing ( I have researched this and have found, using "disk utility" I can make "partitions", if I understand correctly, my machine will "see" a partition as a separate disk, am I miles off?
    That way, heaven
forbid, should one disk have trouble booting, you can
use the Startup Manager to select an alternate disk,
and then diagnose and repair the ailing disk from
    there.
Do I use "disk utility" from another partition disk to do this?
This is, actually, a very important thing to
have in your system. by all means, install the OS on
    the other disk.
A partition on the 120gb, how big should the partition be?
Remember, to keep both disks backed up. So, don't
give up on your external drives all together. They
    are VERY useful.
This is where you are going to hate me... I dont have any externals or back ups.... this is why I am trying to work out what to do... I back up my photo's to DVD when I have enough, its not good practice because it can take a months worth before I have time to physically go through all the work to decide what I will archive to DVD, I would love for all of the work to automatically copy itself to a safe place.
While we are on the subject, a very good way to
backup, is to use Super Duper. This is a clone
utility. SD will copy bit for bit, your drive, and
then make that backup bootable. This is a very nice
feature. Also, after that, you can use the Smart
Update feature, which updates any changes of a volume
to it's clone. This way, you always have an exact
copy of your system and data. Invaluable!
This is obviously what I need... I will download it and try to understand its functions
I like OWC, myself. Even with shipping and tariffs to
Japan, it is most often cheaper to do so. Also, the
company is very reputable, has great service (try
their live chat) and stands behind what they sell.
OWC also has lots of install tutorial video (and
PDF's) in their support section. Check it
    out.
I have trusted OWC since you recommended them for my processor upgrade and have just ordered the SATA controller from them and am going to get a 500gb internal HD for now until I can learn to rationalise my disk space... at the moment my files are just copies of themselves on the same disk (120gb)
Hey Japamac... I have to say thank you to you sir, you have obviously put a lot of time and effort into your reply and I really do appreciate it...

  • Hyper-V Live Migration Compatibility with Hyper-V Replica/Hyper-V Recovery Manager

    Hi,
Is Hyper-V Live Migration compatible with Hyper-V Replica/Hyper-V Recovery
    Manager?
I have 2 Hyper-V clusters in my datacenter - both using CSVs on Fibre Channel arrays. These clusters where created and are managed using the same "System Center 2012 R2 VMM" installation. My goal it to eventually move one of these clusters to a remote
DR site. Both sites are connected/will be connected to each other through dark fibre.
I manually configured Hyper-V Replica in the Fail Over Cluster Manager on both clusters and started replicating some VMs using Hyper-V
    Replica.
Now every time I attempt to use SCVMM to do a Live Migration of a VM that is protected using Hyper-V Replica to
another host within the same cluster,
the Migration VM Wizard gives me the following "Rating Explanation" error:
"The virtual machine virtual machine name which
requires Hyper-V Recovery Manager protection is going to be moved using the type "Live". This could break the recovery protection status of the virtual machine.
When I ignore the error and do the Live Migration anyway, the Live migration completes successfully with the info above. There doesn't seem to be any impact on the VM or it's replication.
When a Host Shuts-down or is put into maintenance, the VM Migrates successfully, again, with no noticeable impact on users or replication.
When I stop replication of the VM, the error goes away.
Initially, I thought this error was because I attempted to manually configure
the replication between both clusters using Hyper-V Replica in Failover Cluster Manager (instead of using Hyper-V Recovery Manager).
However, even after configuring and using Hyper-V Recovery Manager, I still get the same error. This error does not seem to have any impact on the high-availability of
my VM or on Replication of this VM. Live migrations still occur successfully and replication seems to carry on without any issues.
However, it now has me concern that Live Migration may one day occur and break replication of my VMs between both clusters.
I have searched, and searched and searched, and I cannot find any mention in official or un-official Microsoft channels, on the compatibility of these two features.
I know vMware vSphere replication and vMotion are compatible with each otherhttp://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.replication_admin.doc%2FGUID-8006BF58-6FA8-4F02-AFB9-A6AC5CD73021.html.
Please confirm to me: Are Hyper-V Live Migration and Hyper-V Replica compatible
    with each other?
If they are, any link to further documentation on configuring these services so that they work in a fully supported manner will be highly appreciated.
    D

This can be considered as a minor GUI bug.
Let me explain. Live Migration and Hyper-V Replica is supported on both Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Hyper-V.
This is because we have the Hyper-V Replica Broker Role (in a cluster) that is able to detect, receive and keep track of the VMs and the synchronizations. The configuration related to VMs enabled with replications follows the VMs itself.
If you try to live migrate a VM within Failover Cluster Manager, you will not get any message at all. But VMM will (as you can see), give you an
error but it should rather be an informative message instead.
Intelligent placement (in VMM) is responsible for putting everything in your environment together to give you tips about where the VM best possible can run, and that is why we are seeing this message here.
I have personally reported this as a bug. I will check on this one and get back to this thread.
Update: just spoke to one of the PMs of HRM and they can confirm that live migration is supported - and should work in this context.
Please see this thread as well: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsazure/en-US/29163570-22a6-4da4-b309-21878aeb8ff8/hyperv-live-migration-compatibility-with-hyperv-replicahyperv-recovery-manager?forum=hypervrecovmgr

  • Itunes 9.1 not compatable with XP?

Tried to download 9.1 and keep getting error message that says: The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. Continuing installation of this software may impair or destabilize operation of your system either immediately or in the future.
I have reboot computer several times, etc. Have never had a problem with any updates to itunes or iphone till now.
    Thoughts?

Itunes 9.1 is definitely NOT compatible with Windows XP at this time. The culprit appears to be the Bonjour services package. I recently attempted to install via 3 methods: through Apple Update, via direct download over wireless and via direct download over wired connection. The result was the same in all three instances: when attempting to start itunes 9.1, it would immediately crash with a message "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close...". Upon checking the application event viewer (control panel > performance & maintenance > administrative tools > event viewer) I was able to determine that the itunes crashes were due to Bonjour in all but one instance. Bottom line: steer clear of itunes 9.1 until Apple gets their comparability issues corrected.
