10.4.6 messed up Mail.

For some reason it reported that it could contect none of my three available SMTP servers. Nothing about the settings has changed since updating to 10.4.6. I pinged these SMTP servers from the command line and they're showing up fine. I checked that all of those SMTP servers still worked on all my other computers and they all do. I checked that my firewall was turned off, and it is. I trashed my mail prefs and re-entered all my account information and now it only doesn't let some of them ever connect. This is super lame.
Anyone have any ideas?

Ben, have you ruled out a corrupted Mail.plist file or some other corrupted setting having to do with connecting to those servers?

  • I really messed up Mail, now how do I fix it?

    (Please pardon the long explanation)
    Where I was:
    PowerMac G4, running OSX 10.3.9, Mail 1.3.11
    All working well.
Burned a back-up DVD of my Mail Library and preference files.
    Where I went:
    MacPro G5, running OSX 10.5.8, Mail 3.6
    How I got there:
Started the brand new G5, ran through multiple updates, installed files from DVDs burned off the G4. From the back-up DVD, dragged the contents of the Mail Library folder and dropped them into the G5 folder Mail user's library. When a dialog box appeared, asking if I wanted to replace identically named folders, I clicked 'yes'. Dragged and dropped the preference files in the same manner. Internet access through Airport, and Safari work just fine, happily.
    What happened:
When I first opened Mail, a dialog box said it needed to input files from previous Mail or something, after about two minutes, it opened, showing the mailboxes from the previous Mail in the G4 (Yeah!). Within twenty seconds, an alert requesting the mail server password appeared, and ten seconds later, Mail crashed.
    Where I am now:
When I open Mail now, it opens showing no previous mailbox folders, then quickly the dialog box asking for a password appears, and seconds after, Mail crashes.
    What I think happened:
I most likely messed up by mixing old files into the new system. Looking at the Mail folder now, I have no idea what is corrupted and what is good. There are some duplicates by name. Deleting some of them hasn't helped.
    What I want to do:
Re-install a new Mail system, get it working, than input all my old mail from the G4 in some fashion.
I would like to have all my email from the last five years on the new system.
Questions: How can I fix the mess I have now? How can I get a fresh Mail system, and then transfer the previous emails from the G4?
    Thank you sincerely, Isshi.

    1) Can I import my previous signatures by dragging and dropping in the Signatures.plist file, or do I have to re-write all the old ones? The file in the new Mail is named SignaturesByAccount.plist so it's named differently.
    2) Can I import the previous address book somehow?
    3) How can I import the filter preferences?
    4) Do I really have to re-construct all the mail mailboxes in the new system (now they are nestled in the 'import' mailbox)?
Despite my earlier suggestion I'm not an expert in mail importing, so others will have to contribute their ideas on some of your questions. Here's what I can tell you regarding your first two questions:
    1) I'd avoid trying to use that Signatures.plist file. I agree that it seems to be organized differently from the earlier version.
    2) Address Book can import an "Address Book Archive". I'd go back to your 10.3.9 system (if you still have it) and see if you can create such a thing.

  • Mess up "Mail, Contacts, Calenders", but good! Described in 1st comment below. Basic computer idiot!

I went in my settings under "Mail, Contacts,Calendars", and I basically made a MESS! Can't get it back to the way it was, was initially using my free Shaw account, now all I get is
Now mail all messed up and can't get it back to what it was, just a total mess on my much used ipad,eg. "Wrong Network Setting","Authentic Address Wrong, IP Address Wrong".........."etc..!Is there any hope?1st used Shaw then tried Live account NO USE, NOTHING WORKS!  I am pretty much computer Stupid, guess that's what people get when they do not know crap about, Computers, iPads, iPods (all of which "this" dummy owns.  Is there anyway to fix my iPad,, I am disabled, and pretty much cut off from the world without it! Or would you suggest I higher another expensive (to me) to fix it again? Honesty is the best policy (my motto), so be honest! Can "I" fix this mess?

Slowing down a little bit would probably help.
Just to clarify, you are talking about the mail settings only is that correct? Or did you start messing around with all of the other settings on the iPad?
If you just altered the mail settings for the account, it would probably make the most sense to delete the email account and start all over again. But this is suggested on the assumption that you know what the mail settings for your email account should be when you try to add the account again.

  • Snow Leopard messed up Mail; I still get it, but timer things spins away like it's offline

    Hello,
Ever since I installed Snow Leopard, Mail has acted weird.  The timer thingie spins and spins, or I get the exclamation point within a triangle within a circle icon.  I don't get all my mail, either.  Gmail doesn't deliver it all to Apple Mail.  What's up with that?  I've heard others mention Snow Leopard messed up thier Mail.
    Thanks,
    Ellen

Thanks.  I did that, and 609 emails came flooding in from Gmail!  The timer thing keeps spinning endlessly as if it's looking for more mail, but I can live with that.  At least now I can just check my mail without having to sign in to Gmail every time.
    Thanks again.

  • Made a mess of mail, please help

Hi everyone. I switched from PC to iMac last year, and here is my situation.
I use mail on my iMac.  I have it set up to check my pop mail for my private email address ([email protected]) and my hotmail ([email protected]) and both of those are set to leave a copy of all messages on their servers.  I have an iCloud address but I have never used it.
I have not yet confugured mail on my MacBook, my iPad or my iPhone.
I am moving overseas next month for about 8 months and I can't take my iMac with me.  If that wasn't heart breaking enough, I don't quite know what to do to manage everything while I am away and my iMac is asleep in a carton.  I will be taking my Air, phone and pad.  Can anyone please suggest a nice way for me to manage my emails while I am away?
I would like to have access to all my archives, plus all my new emails in one place, and particularly I like all my replies and outgoing messages to come from [email protected]  And, I would like all of my mail to be easy to sync to my iMac when I get home in 8 months time.
I understand that I can just use the various providers web sites and read and write there, but I was hoping for a nice solution that allowed for offline work too.
Any suggestions? What would you do?
    Thanks so much...

  • Lion has messed up Mail

After downloading Lion Mail gives an error message saying I need to reinstall Mail. I did and it did not correct the problem.

Make sure you don't have more than one copy of an app named Mail in the Applications folder.  The correct one should be version 5 -- do you have that?

  • Messed up mail on iphone

I made a rule that inadvertently moved a lot of messages where I didn't want them.
I fixed that, but ever since then my iPhone is missing Mail all the way back to 10/20/11, in Inbox only.
All the other folders match my message status.
And my iPad and web access of iCloud both match the Inbox on my Mac in Mail.
But the iPhone is missing that year of messages. How to get them back?
    Phone, ios6, ipad ios5.x, mac 10.7.5, mail 5.3

POP accounts can let multipal computers download the same messages as long as you have the advanced settings set properly.
You need to make sure both sides are set to NOT remove the message from the server for a period of time if ever. My iPhone is set to NEVER remove messages from the server and my MacBook Pro is also set to NEVER remove mail from the server, only my main Mac is set to remove messages and it set to only remove after one week. The problem is that the iPhone is still removing it anyway as is the Mail on my MacBook now even though it didn't before that I remember... I know when using my two Mac's it worked as expected.

  • Mail messing up 'mail headings' and 'mail messages'

    Hi,
I have a question regarding Apple Mail 3.6 that until recently has operated flawlessly, being linked to three different mail account - among them my work account via IMAP.
Yet, a couple of days ago the program started to confuse 'mail headings' and 'mail messages'. All of a sudden I got new messages that contained up to three year old messages. What do I do about that?
The problem seems to reside in the program itself. If I my work account via webmail, there are no problems at all. Similarly, 'headings' and 'messages' match perfectly on my iPhone.
    Any suggestions are most welcome.
    Thanks on beforehand!
    Best,
    Mikael

Hello and welcome to the Discussions.
The index probably needs to be repaired. You may need to force a reindexing. Try removing the Envelope Index to force reindexing of all mailboxes -- see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
With IMAP or Exchange accounts, note their special treatment requiring removal of the account folders. Have you ever removed the Envelope Index without removing the account folders, by any chance?
After you do this, you should again test.

  • Messed Up Mail (IMAP transfers)

    Hi,
Yesterday whilst using my Graphics Pen/Tablet I seemed to have Clicked and Dragged one iMAP folder to another.
Unfortunately this was my Google Mail (All Mail) Folder  to one associated with my Web site.
This creates a Folder on the second IMAP account called (Google Mail) All Mail and it started copying 17,000+ emails over whilst I was busy posting on ASC.
I thought I had stopped it.
I deleted the Extra Folder and thought that was it.
Now I am getting this message every few seconds.
I tried receating the Folder called (Google MAil) All Mail in the second IMAP Account but I am having trouble with the parathenses
(I added All Mail as the Folder name but I can't change it to (Google Mail) All Mail - it will not stick).
I tried adding them as Sqaue brackets with no luck.
As soon as the next pop up appears the name Changes back.
The Email that gets moved to the said INBox  "On My Mac" is alwasy the same one once I dismiss the Message.
This is beginning to drive me crazy as they say.
It seems I can't do anything in Mail until this is sorted.

    Hi BDAqua and Ernie,
I will try to answer both sets of questions.
These are the Folders Mail Shows for that Account (Although I could not Right/Control Click it)
I have found that the people I use for my WebSite do have  a page you can login to view mail.
On that page the All Mail folder does not exist.
When I have this account Enabled I have tried changing the name with no luck.
On the web page I tried creating the [Google Mail] All Mail name.  This stuck but the Mail App does not show that Folder. (I was not logged in via Mail when I did this).
(I will edit ro remove the Brackets as I did that first thing today)
In Mail Preferences > Accounts > Advanced this Webiste IMAP is set to Compact Mail Boxes Automatically where as my Gmail one is not.
Not sure if that has a bearing. (Will wait for advice)
As to the Force Indexing by deleting the Envelope index.
I did that before as per BDQAqua's Instructions.
It did the Gmail one (I Presume as it was Enabled before)
I presume it did not touch the Website one as it was not Enabled.
I will repeat with both Enabled.
I have read the link and have started work on it.  I  presume this is the folder removal you spoke of and not anywhere else ?
    Will post back soon.

  • I messed up Mail and now contacts aren't autofilling

Not sure what I did, but I was fooling with Automator and played with a few of the presets (to see what they did) and now Mail doesn't autofill names from my Address Book.
It completes from the previous senders list, but it doesn't complete from my list of contacts.
Not exactly sure what I did...but how do I fix it?
    Thanks!

I rebooted and the problem resolved itself

  • Httmpmail messed up Mail. Deleted messages stay in inbox now.

Alright, I already had Daniel Parnell's httpmail hotmail plugin installed. I saw he had a newer version and downloaded and installed accordingly. Then when I opened Mail, I saw that all my messages for the past two days were gone. Also, when I delete a message from my inbox in Mail, it greys out but still stays there, not moving to Trash.
I went into library>mail>bundles and deleted the httpmail plugin and restarted Mail but still have the same problem. I dont care about the stupid plugin now, I just want my messages back and want my Mail program to operate correctly again.
What can I do to fix this?

Try rebuilding your Mail index like this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing mail. When that's done, everything should be back to normal.

  • Mavericks has messed up Mail and Safari

Installed Mavericks a few days ago on my iMac and some really annoying bugs have been introduced to Mail (7.3) and Safari (7.0.6). I can't automatically add multiple addresses to emails anymore using the space bar; I have to manually type out certain addresses, add commas, etc. Certain webpages, including youtube and google, won't load on Safari. Chat support had me repair permissions with disk utility, clear cookies and reset safari, but none worked. It was also suggested that I do an SMC reset, a PRAM reset, and a safe reboot. I haven't done any of these, basically because I'm nervous about introducing any more wonkiness that I can't undo. I've been reading about similar problems with Mavericks for months now (I only upgraded because I needed it for Final Cut) , but I never see any solutions. Can anyone help me???  Thanks.

Most of the problems come from other incompatible crap you have installed.
The things suggested to you do not make it more wonky. They can sometimes fix weird issues.
Space does not enter the selected email address, Enter does. If it doesn't identify an address, then it isn't in your Contacts or Previous Recipients. However, after sending once, it should recognize it. See if you can find it in Contacts or in "Previous Recipients" in the Window menu of Mail.
For the other problems, boot into Safe Mode.
If you can access those sites in Safe Mode, you have some third-party software blocking the sites.

  • How do I use Internet accounts to add accounts to mail in mavericks

I used migration Assistant to Migrate to a new Imac(late 2013), The new machine was 10.8.4 so the very first thing I did was add an account so I could update. I suspect this was the root cause of my problem because then when I migrated the account I had to rename it
Everything worked fine except for mail. Note under library/mail I still had a 45Gb folder.
My internet accounts had a list of all the mail accounts I used to have but mail itself was empty. All the accounts are imap so I have not lost mail.
Trying things mentioned on the forum I tried deleting the accounts under internet accounts and re-adding, and I tried importing from the mail folder. Importing sort of worked but created a big mess of mail under a import folder.
Where I am right now. I deleted everything including my library/mail folder.
I go to mail. I do add acount, I add a icloud account, I select paul...me.com It adds the account.
I then can go to accounts and see my me.com address with mail ticked.
And nothing. Mail just sits their blank.
Now I can trick it it into adding one account, when everything is blank, instead of giving me the new system preferences internet accounts it gives me the old accounts from mail 10.8, I can then add 1 account under their and it will work., As soon as it has one account it then goes back to giving me the system preference internet accounts which just lets me add acounts but does not work with mail.

Yes it all works under a new user. Thank you.
At this point the simplest solution is probably to put everything else from the old user into the new one, hopefully without breaking anything else.

  • Mail App no longer working after 2.0 upgrade

I upgraded to 2.0 on my IPhone Edge and now my mail application no longer works AT ALL. If I try to open it, it simply shows me a blank mail screen, waits for a few seconds and then returns to the home screen. Strangely enough, I have been able to send email photos using the camera application.
Email is the most important application for me on the iPhone! Has anyone encountered this problem? Is there a fix available?

I recently stopped by the apple store and have fixed my mail app! The problem as described to me was caused by a installing apps. Turns out that apps can mess with Mail setting in some way and perhaps due to a bad setting or a bad combination of settings my mail application stopped working. The way I fixed it was to do a restore to New Iphone which, unfortunately, wipes everything! But after syncing back up including re-installing all of my apps, mail works again! Of course, I lost all of my notes, various settings, and lots of other stuff. Turns out that a simple restore, since it backs up your phone beforehand (backing up bad settings at the same time) is not the silver bullet but a full restore to new iphone probably often is. Hope this helps others.

  • Mail and postfix issue

Just curious if the Mail.app uses postfix to send or receive email. Yesterday I edited some postfix setting to use with MAMP and it completely screwed up Mail. I was under the impression that a mail client doesn't use any of the internal/system mail settings..etc. But It messed up Mail so bad I had to use a TimeMachine backup to restore the Mail settings and application.
What Mail was doing was that it could send email, but it would receive email. When I logged into gmail and had my Mail client on. It would suck the email I sent out of gmail and it would just disappear. But if I had my Mail client turned off. The email would stay in my gmail account.
Anyway, I solved it. But just wanted to see if anyone knew why editing postfix settings would cause such a weird problem.
    Thanks

If a setting doesn't exist in main.cf then it will be default.
This URL shows the settings and their defaults:
    http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html
If you want to over-ride a default, you add the setting to main.cf with your value and restart postfix (sudo postfix reload).
