10.4.6 -- no firewire devices show-up

I upgraded to 10.4.6 on Sunday and everything was fine until this morning. Now, no firewire devices will appear (I have an iSight and two external drives).
Please, please, please help!!!
Thank you.

From MacFixIt, regarding inability to see FireWire devices after upgrading to 10.4.6:
"We should note that various FireWire issues can be caused by outdated firmware. Run Software Update and make sure there are no firmware updates available for your Mac.
Also, as with previous instances of this issue, some users have reported success by performing a hardware reset that involves holding down the power key for 10 seconds or so while the system is off."
If those suggestions fail, and you used Software Update to go to 10.4.6, you might try downloading the Mac OS X Combo Updater for PPC and applying it.

  • Firewire devices no longer showing

This afternoon - for the first time in years - no firewire device showed up either on the Desktop or in the Apple Profiler.
Restarted several times with no success.
Devices on Firewire 400 (via bus) external CD reader/writer and DVD ditto.
Devices on Firewire 800, three LaCie drives linked together. Tried each one separately, no success.
Which is bit of a pain, these being my backup and ancillary storage devices ...
Disconnected them all. Restarted G5. Closed down and left G5 for half-an-hour (following a suggestion in a forum). Reconnected, restarted; no joy.
    Console message includes:
    Jun  6 14:50:03 localhost kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 42 built-in now active, GUID 001124ff fe86cb20; max speed s800.
and then, at the bottom of the report:
Jun  6 14:52:47 SarahJane kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 42 built-in: no valid selfIDs for more than 2 minutes after bus reset.
Jun  6 14:55:59 SarahJane kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 42 built-in: no valid selfIDs for more than 2 minutes after bus reset.
Jun  6 14:59:11 SarahJane kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 42 built-in: no valid selfIDs for more than 2 minutes after bus reset.
Can anyone help, please? I've run all the usual things, hardware check, diskwarrior, techtool (though none of these seem to check the firewire bus).

Right - had a look through, and after two attempts (mutter mutter and splutter curses) got everything going again.
The cure was, in this case, as listed in your first link: disconnect computer etc.
The first time the CD reader came back but the external drives wouldn't, so I said a few words that my wife would not approve of, then tried again but this time connected the (800 fw) external drives first, and then, when the buggers showed up, connected the cd drive on the 400 cable. I think the dvd drive on the 400 has died, so I'll leave that disconnected.
Oh it's a great machine when it's running right, it's a lovely gadget to play with; but when something goes wrong it can be very frustrating ...
I sometimes wish I'd had one of these when I was still at school and a little quicker on the uptake.

  • Firewire device not showing up in finder, even though connected

I have a device (Tascam hd-p2) connected to my firewire 800 port on my macbook pro.  It has information on a cf card that I would like to access.   The device shows up in the bus on system profiler, but it doesn't show up in my sidebar in finder, on my desktop, or anywhere that I can find it.  How can I get to my information? Thanks

What version of Mac OS X? (Your profile says "iOS 6", but that's not a Mac operating system.)
Assuming you are running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, set either or both of the following:
Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop: > External disks
Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > Show these items in the sidebar: > DEVICES > External disks

  • Firewire device not showing

    Greetings
    using a G5, tiger 10.4.9
I have been using this computer for many months with no problem using firewire devices. I recently set up a seperate user account on the computer for my daughter. Prior to this ( for many months)I had a fireiwre device - LACIE external HD -connected that would mount each time at startup and show up on the desktop. Now, I can't get the icon on the desktop of the LACIE to show when I startup. I connected a camera to the computer using firewire, but it too would not show ( before it would). When I connected the camera using USB, it showed up on the desktop. Looks like firewire devices not showing. I checkd System Profile and it shows the LACIE device as connected and functioning. But it won't show up on the desktop. Any ideas on why I can't ge the Firewire devices to show on the desktop?
Thank you in advance for you help. . . .

Sounds like you have the name wrong. Open Disk Utility and take a look to verify the volume name. Disk Utility will list the drive itself, then indented below that is the volume name. To verify that you are using the correct name, try launching Terminal and do a list command:
    ls -a /Volumes/"Name of Volume"
Hit the return key and see if the contents of the volume are listed. There is a space after "ls" and another after "-a"--if you don't get anything or get an error then you might want to try
    ls -a /Volumes
and try copying the name from the list and pasting into the AppleScript.

  • Firewire devices all showing "offline" in CS4

I installed CS4 Production Premium on one of my worskstations (HP xw8200 Win 7 64b) a couple of months ago and have been using it mostly just for outputting via Adobe Media Encoder. Today I tried for the first time to do an actual capture via firewire. Both devices I tried (JVC GY HD-110 camera and a JVC BR-DV3000 deck) gave me the familiar ka-doink sound when I powered them on, but the PPro capture utility shows them both as "offline". I tried rebooting the PC, doing a Windows update and checked both devices to make sure they were properly configured for output, but nothing has worked. I checked all the settings I could think of in PPro, too. The Windows Device Manager refreshes when I turn a device on or off, but I don't see either device showing up there. I realize this is probably a Windows issue, but I thought someone here might have an answer.

I used to have similar trouble getting firewire devices to show up. What I had to do was the following:
    1. Unplug the firewire cable from the the pc and make sure the camera is off.
    2. Reboot the PC with the camera off and the firewire unplugged so it boots up 'fresh'
    3. Shut down the PC completely with the firewire unplugged.
    4. With the PC shut down, plug in the firewire and turn on the camera to VCR mode or whatever you use when capturing.
    5. Boot up the PC with the camera plugged in and turned on.

  • Unkown Device Showing up on Firewire Bus when nothing is connected

I have a brand new G5 dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC not INTEL pci-e and when I go to the System Profiler and look under the Firewire Bus page it's indicating that I have an Unknown Device connected when in fact I don't have anyting externally connected. I do have two Digidesign PCI-E Audio cards installed but I can't see how this would be considered a firewire device. Anyone else have this problem or ideas on this? Thanks!

  • Using Firewire devices results in desktop stuttering

Firewire traffic is causing desktop performance to decline. On my Mac Mini (late 2009, 4 GB RAM) even slow amounts of firewire traffic is causing bad spaces performance (stuttering while moving from space to space) and jerky window movement. I have tested this with several cables and 2 different firewire devices. Device 1, a Canon HDV camcorder, is bringing the window movement to stutter when imovie is detecting the connection and showing the import screen (no transfer initiated, not even playback). Device 2, a Western Digital My Book Studio with FW800 ports, is making the desktop jerky even if it is only playing a mp3 file.
    Notes:
Spotlight was disabled on the mentioned fw800 hdd. Disk activity monitor shows normal operation, very low cpu workload. The system log also does not show any suspicious messages.
USB devices like harddisks do not trigger this behaviour. The mentioned fw800 disk also has an USB port. Connecting the device using USB does not slow down desktop performance, even when transfering large files.

Thanks for you suggestions. I tried them out (and some more).
    Here are the results:
You can test to see if the Virtual Memory system is getting overworked by running Utilities Activity >Monitor, click on the System Memory tab and look at PageOuts and PageIns.
I kept an eye on the virtuel memory for a while now. Seems to be fine, even after hours of my usual working procedure there are virtually no page outs.
But if your ratio is good (10% or less), then I'm would suspect instead that you need to re-install a >full combo update of the latest version of OSX.
I reinstallad the 10.6.4 Combo Update. No difference.
Then I installed a fresh copy of OSX on the firewire drive. Running an unpatched OS from the drive is not bad in regards of system response time (actually it's pretty good). But the desktop jerkyness is present all the time.
Then (after switching back to my internal drive again) I stopped keeping an eye on window movement etc. and tried out some games. The results: There is a major difference in performance when the fw drive is working in the background in contrast to an usb2 drive (or even the same fw drive attached using usb). When I am playing the game (in this case it was an opengl port of Doom) there is virtually no performance penalty when I am playing the game while transfering a huge file to an usb2 drive in the background. But when I am transfering a file to the FW drive, there is huge drop in frames per second (roughly 25 - 30 %).
I am wondering if this has anything to with fact that firewire is using dma access to the system memory (in contrast to usb) an there is some sort of congestion on the memory bus. Especially since my issues are linked to gpu performance and the 9400M in the Mini uses shared memory.

  • Cannot preview on external firewire device

I just recently upgraded from Premiere Pro CS3 to CS4. Since doing so I cannot seem to get my video to display on my external firewire device. I have a Sony GV-D900 deck that I use for preview while I'm editing.
Has something changed in CS4 that would cause this not to work?  If I bring up a project in CS3 the video appears instantly on the firewire deck but with CS4 I get nothing. I've checked the preferences and the two applications appear to be setup with the same options.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Everything seems to be setup correctly. I forgot to mention that I can capture and manipulate the deck from the Capture window so it is communicating with the deck. I just cannot see the video on the deck when previewing the timeline. If I open a project in CS3 it shows up right away.
My main purpose for previewing on the deck is I have a TV attached to the A/V outputs of the deck and it allows me to view my project on the TV while I'm working on it. Very handy. I've used it in this manor since Premiere 6.0.
The fact that I can control and capture the GV-D900 from within Premiere CS4 seems to indicate everything is set ok. I just can't figure out why I cannot see the preview.

  • 10.6.4 and firewire device - FCA202

I've just installed 10.6.4.using software update and now my Behringer FCA202 is not showing up - in 'About my mac' it shows in Firewire - Unable to list Firewire devices.
I wonder if reducing the noise on some firewire devices has been taken to the extreme?

actually, i have finally gotten quicken 2010 to work properly again (i hope!) though not sure how or why. was attempting to restore to 10.3 as allan suggested (thanks, allan) but ran into problems w/ that. then i couldn't empty my trash. did a google on error code (8003) and did a "safe reboot" as follows: shut down mac, waited 30 seconds, restarted while holding down left shift key until after apple logo and spinning ball appeared, after which i had to re-login. still had some problems emptying all trash at first but finally got it all emptied. have restarted several times today btw. went back to quicken afterwards and suddenly it's working properly again though at first i had to re-enter password to re-connect. so there's hope. try rebooting in safe mode and see if that helps. but again, i have no idea if that's really what solved the issue. this is strange but good luck!

  • Firewire problem - (unable to list firewire device)

In the system profiler it said "unable to list firewire device"
    I've tried the following method:
    reset pram
unplug the power cord and wait for 30 mins and reboot
and they couldn't solve the problem.
    Could anyone solve this?
    Thanks

First thing to do is reset the FW chip set on the mother board. Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes the ports to do stuff like detect when a device wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac). Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now plug the power cord back in, plug in ONLY the keyboard and mouse, start up the Mac. Now plug in accessories/hard-drives and see if your FW ports and the drive work any better.
    Best of luck!
    Patrick

  • FireWire warning: unable to list FireWire devices (red warning)

    Hello dear Apple Community,
My last (fifth Apple Computer indeed) which is recent (iMac alu 24'' 2,4 ghz refurbly bought 3 weeks ago) shows me signs of unusual lack of reliability.
This computer works pretty much fine but I regularly encounter a FireWire issue with it after a few hours of work. Generally after a long period of standby I cannot mount my FireWire devices so I have to reboot the iMac. I must precise that my peripherals are not in trouble (I have tried several cables and external drives), but the computer must be.
I have tried to use another user account and I have also reinstalled entirely the OS.
The funny thing is that when the FireWire is not responding I cannot put the computer in sleep mode!
Each time I reboot it reworks again (until when is the question).
It bothers me in a way I never had to restart my previous Macs (the reason why I switched several years ago from MS to Apple Computer Inc.).
I begon to think I am the only one with it: either FW works 100 % or 0 % but not like my CPU.

    Good news everyone,
I finally found the origin of my problem: it comes from the RAM.
    When I use 1 slot with 1GB, 2 slots of 1GB each or 1GB + 2GB it works fine.
When I put 2 times 2GB it doesn't work because of the difference between the memories (the same bus but not the same manufacturer). I will try buying an extra 2GB RAM in order to have a correct dual channel.

  • Quad stopped mounting firewire devices.

After recognizing my new FW800 hard drive, MOTU 828 and iSight camera, yesterday when I booted up my new Quad G5 stopped mounting these devices and a System Profile showed no firewire ports even present. A simple "disconnect all peripherals and zap the PRAM" fixed it.
Today the same thing happened again so I did the rest again, but nothing happened. I then reset the NVRAM as well -- still nothing.
My relationship with Apple has been love-hate for the last 12 years; right now, after dropping major $$ on a new Quad G5 (against my better judgment because we allllll know that the first round of new computers that Apple puts out is always chock-full of lemons) I am in "hate" mode. 6 Apple computers in 12 years, and all 6 (I'm not kidding) were broken right out of the box.
Can anyone recommend something that I might be missing?

    Hey ds,
Thanks for the tips. I actually tried those, along with all of the troubleshooting tips that the phone tech support folks gave me. The only thing that has worked is unplugging the power cord from the CPU, then plugging it back in, and zapping the pRAM on startup -- then the firewire devices will mount.
Because tech support couldn't figure out why that's happening, they've declared it a hardware problem and said that I got a lemon... and I'm off to the Apple Store first thing in the morning to drop off my Quad.
6 lemons out of 6 purchased over 12 years.... ouch.
