10.4.6 Update and DVD-Video

Hi all.
Today I've updated from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6.
Today I can't see my DVD-Video on my powerbook g4 combo.
When I insert a DVD-Video on my drive, DVD Video Player app starts but shows nothing. No icon on my desktop.
No problem with data DVD and CDs.
It seems a microsoft upgrade

Did you repair permissions before updating to 10.4.6? What have you done since the update as far as trouble shooting?

Can I save both DVD-R and DVD-Video files onto the same DVD?

    Hi Stan,
I just want the user to be able to run my video clips either on a
computer or on a standard DVD player. It would be nice to include both
formats on a single disc. I am new to this and am not sure what format
is most widely used for standard DVD players. Thanks for your response
and any guidance you can give me.

  • I just ran an Apple software update and lost video in my Final Cut 7 running on OS 10.6.8.  It is indicating a codec problem.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I just ran a software update and lost video in my FCP 7 timeline (OS 10.6.8).  I get an error message that there is a codec problem and get either a green or black screen.  Anybody have idea how to fix this?

what happens if you create a new apple prores 422 sequence and drop bars and tone into it.
Does it display correctly?  If so, I'd assume the the prores codecs are ok.
Not sure I"ve worked with hdv2 material.  You may need to reinstall your os and fcp and not do the latest software update.  People have definitely reported problems with hdv material after the update.   Maybe someone will speak up with an alternative solution.

  • I have a DVD-Rom and DVD-Video card for Powerbook and need advice

I acquired 2 accessory components for a G3 series powerbook. I have a dual G4 so have no use for them. There is a M4743 DVD-Rom for Powerbook and a DVD-Video PC card for G3 series Powerbook family M5163. There is also a software CD. I would like to sell them but I really don’t how to explain what this stuff does. I tried Ebay and did not find any matches. Does this make a DVD upgrade for a particular Powerbook? Is something else required? Is Ebay the best place to sell? Any idea what this stuff is worth? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Bob

    Robert,
You apparently have the DVD Video Player Kit for the Powerbook G3 Series "Wallstreet" M4753.
    This is the DVD-ROM module:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/customer/product.php?productid=16219&cat=26 6&page=1
This is the DVD Decoder PC card:
    http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=296&cat=&page=1
The above DVD PC card is not Apple's but there were two third-party vendors who also offered a DVD kit...VST and MCE. They all served the same purpose and will all be priced similarly.
Both PC card and optical drive are required to play DVD movies on the Wallstreet, plus Apple DVD Player is only supported when booted to 9.x, not 10.x.
I really cannot give you a fair price to ask; the above hardware prices are probably high but you will get an idea.

  • Director projects on DVD ROM and DVD video

    Hi all,
I need your attention and your aid to solve a doubt and a
job. I've to create a DVD Video that plays on dvd home players and
on macs and windows computers, with dvd readers. Moreover I need
that the same DVD contains a directors project (the same project
for mac and win system) that start automatically, when the dvd is
inserted in a dvd reader of a computer.
    Is it possible?
Does director make it (DVD video + DVD rom with a directors
    project?
Director vs DVD Studio Pro in order to obtain a master DVD
hybrid (DVD video + DVD rom with a directors project)?
    Thanks for your attention,
    Mirone

Wahey!!! That's me!!! Crikey I don't remember posting to that
    forum!?!
Anyway, back to your problem - as already noted there really
    isn't an
elegant way of solving it! You quite literally have to whack
    everything into
one folder - when it comes to hybrid DVD-Videos there's no
    'nice partitions'
as we have with hybrid CD-ROM I'm afraid!
The route I took was to develop the DVD-Video and add the
    Director Windows
projector and its gubbings via the ROM content folder [used
    Encore - but
    DVDSP isn't too far apart].
Also within this DVD-ROM folder lay a Mac disc image [DMG] of
    our Director
Mac projector with it's associated Xtras, etc. - with enough
    time on my
hands I could easily have added asset sharing but time was
    tight to say the
least and I knew I had lots and lots of space on the DVD so
    basically
packaged all the assets together with the projector within
    the
aforementioned Mac disc image. I also added a PDF + text
    document at the DVD
root level explaining to Mac users that they would have to
    mount the
included Mac disc image to gain access to the data side of
    the disc.
As it's been pointed out already it isn't pretty and it isn't
    elegant,
but... it works!! I was also advised by our replicator's that
    this is the
"safest" way to go. Yes you could try the Mac partitions
    route but there
really is NO guarantee that all standalone DVD players are
    capable of
reading the final disc - I wasted numerous coasters with such
    ideas and it
was very, VERY hit and miss!
If you've a wide DVD-Video collection take a look around at
    some of the
titles that hold ROM content as well and you'll find that the
    big studios
also produce their DVD's in the same fashion, for example
    [off the top of my
head] the Matrix trilogy are produced in this way.
    Good luck...

  • Strange distorted fields on icons, cursor and DVD video

    Hi!
I was playing a DVD when I put my Powerbook to sleep (i.e. I closed it). The next morning the DVD-image was full of green and b/w distortion, and now all the icons on my desktop, the dock, cursor and the upper right corner of the menu bar is distorted too!
Everything else works fine, but this just looks horrible!
    Can someone help me please?
    Harald

I hope somebody who knows something about video ram will add something to this discussion! My first problem was wierd happenings with IDVD...viewing a dvd (a very pleasurable experience in the past) suddenly showed all kinds of (mostly red and green) vertical lines all across the screen. Soon after, on occasion, I'd suddenly see dual sets of 5-6 vertical lines about one inch in length showing up on desktop icons, menu bars, and the cursor. A reboot will usually clear it, but it comes back...not right away but within a day or so. But nothing helps the idvd play right. Seems to me this started happening soon after I installed OSX 10.4, but I don't know if there's any connection. I ran the Apple Harware Test program and it indicated a problem with the Vram. So-- what does one do abut that? How does one "clear a corrupt memory map in video RAM"?

  • Getting Ripped DVD Video and Audio Into Encore

Do you have previously authored DVDs that need rework?  Do you want to add menus with greater impact and functionality?  Do you want to add some additional program or supplemental material?  Does a client want their product demo DVD to be updated to reflect the capabilities of the new and improved version, but the source files no longer exist?  Using Adobe Encore DVD and a freeware utility called DVD Decrypter (DVDD), you can accomplish this quickly and easily.
Disclaimer: I do not support the illegal copying and/or distribution of copyrighted works.  The authors and distributors of the software I use have made it clear that they do not support illegal copying.  This guide is intended solely to assist you in ripping and copying DVD video to which you have the legal rights.  Any use of this guide to infringe the copyright of someone else’s intellectual property is prohibited.
This guide is based on Adobe Encore DVD 1.5.1 and DVD Decrypter version 3.5.4.0.  Let’s Begin!
Place the DVD to be ripped in your DVD drive and launch DVDD.  If you have more than one drive (e.g., a DVD-ROM and a DVD burner) make sure the one with the disc is selected in the Source dropdown list in the main program window.  Now we need to set up DVDD to extract video in a way that is “Encore friendly”.  This is the toughest part of the whole exercise.  Click on the Tools menu item and choose “Settings…”.
    Settings
General Tab: You can leave these set at their defaults if you like.  Personally, I specify a custom Default Destination.  I put my ripped video assets all in one place anyway, and having a default destination means I have one less thing to do when I rip a DVD.
IFO Mode Tab: Make sure that “Select Main Movie PGC” and “Enable Stream Processing” are checked.  “Uncheck Suspect Cells” is probably a good default safety check.  If your hard disks are formatted as NTFS, set File Splitting to “None”.  I leave “Copy IFO File” checked with the default sub-items checked.  Make sure that “Patch M2V Timecode” is unchecked.  The items in the Create Additional Files section are purely optional.  The author of DVDD has been kind enough to list which programs need which files; notice that Encore DVD isn’t listed as needing any of these extra files.  I do keep the “Stream Information” box checked.  DVDD generates very informative file names, but I like to keep “Include PGC Number” under File Names checked.  Be advised you will get some lengthy file names after DVDD is finished ripping.
Stream Processing Tab: Since we enabled stream processing in the IFO Mode tab, we need to tell DVDD how to process those streams.  To save yourself time and confusion later, check the “Convert PCM to WAV” box.  Earlier versions of Encore required a Demuxed audio stream and a Raw video stream.  Encore 1.5.1 can accept either type of video stream (Raw or Demuxed) but it does still require a Demuxed audio stream.  However, I still recommend using Raw video and Demuxed audio, if only because it seems to be somewhat faster to process in DVDD.  This workflow is also backward-compatible with earlier versions of Encore.
So let’s set up the Stream Processing tab now.  In the Demux box, enter “0x8? 0xA? 0xC?”.  This ensures that all audio streams in the selected PGC, whether AC3, PCM or MPEG will be set to Demux.  In the Raw box, enter “0xE0”.  This ensures that the video from the selected PGC will be set to Raw.
Additional Notes about the Stream Processing Tab:
    1. For those of you asking the question, “What the heck is a PGC?” it’s just DVD-speak for the titles in a DVD project.  And I’m not talking about the opening or end credits, either; I’m talking about the titles that result, for example, from the timelines you create in an Encore DVD project.  There is a subtle difference between a PGC and a VTS (title set), but that's not important right now.
    2. Happily, recent versions of DVDD create a WAV file after ripping that will import directly into Encore.  Versions prior to 3.2.0.0 would create a WAV file that had to be imported to, and exported from, a sound editing program like Adobe Audition, Goldwave or SoundForge before Encore would recognize it.
Events Tab: For convenience sake, I recommend setting “Set Program Mode” in the Startup section to “IFO”.  That way, whenever you launch DVDD, it will look familiar to you.  You may safely ignore all of the other tabs in the Settings dialog.
    Ripping
1.Under the Input Tab of the main program window, select the PGC you want to rip.  You can only do one at a time.
2.Switch to the Stream Processing Tab.  Verify that Enable Stream Processing is checked.
3.Check or uncheck any or all of the video and audio streams that are listed.  Highlight each one to verify that all audio streams are set to Demux and the video stream is set to Raw.
4.If you didn’t select Default Destination in the General Settings Tab, then you need to tell DVDD where to put the ripped files now.
5.Click on the big DVD-to-Disk icon.
6.DVDD will announce, quite loudly, when it has finished.  At that point you can rename the files or import them as is into Encore.
I hope you find this guide useful and that it helps you get the most out of your investment in Adobe Encore DVD.

OK, I can't tell you what we are doing, you'll have to trust me that it's for a very good cause. I'll simplify the use case as an example. If I can do the following we'll be OK:
    1) Read video/audo files from a DVD that we created
    2) Open these files with the QuickTime Player, click on Export to Apple TV to create an output file.
I'd rather not do an interim conversion of the video data (like use a 3rd party app to convert to mp4 first and then read into QT, but I'm considering a conversion to DV) because that could seriously hurt the apps effectiveness. I also can't use another app (MPEG Streamclip, HandBrake, VisualHub, etc.) to do the conversion.

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • I've just updated and can't seem to find anyway to burn a DVD?

Ive just installed Mavericks and the latest imovie update and initially it lloks good but there doesnt appear to be any way to finalise and then burn the movie to DVD?
It plays fine in theatre and there are share options to Utube, facebook, e mail etc. but no export option which seems strnage am I missing something?

Apple no longer officially supports iDVD, but it still works just fine.
In iMovie go to File>Share>File, choose the size (probably should choose either SD or Large) then click Next, give it a name, then click Save.
Wait till the activity indicator shows that the video has been fully exported (could take a while depending on the size of the movie and the speed of your processor).
Go to iDVD. Go to File>Import>Video and select the file you just created. It will bring the video into your iDVD project.
This was always the way I did it in the previous version of iMovie. Works just fine.

  • DVD audio/video is sticking/crackling on pc (all programs) and dvd palyers

I have burned a small project including a picture slide show some music and a voice over that I created in FCP, rendered, compressed (creating aiff and mpeg2 files) then used dvd studio pro to create a dvd. The audio and video stick, click, and crackle when on a pc and in certain dvd players. The WMP is updated and the players are not very old. WMP does not recognize the play button on the dvd menu either. I've tried setting DVD studio pro preferences to double pass, different dvds, rendering it before compressing it with compressor which was set to best quality 90 min. It plays ok on macbook pro. Please help

I'm also having the same issue. Here's my specs. Let me know if you're experiencing similar tech specs so we can sort this thing out!
    Problem: Suddenly started getting skipping/crackling/clicking
    Noteworthy:
    1. This started happening suddenly. The only changes I've made are:
1a. Ran out of "Apple" 4x disks and tried Verbatim 4x and Verbatim 16x (from the Apple store) disks.
1b. Recently updated OS from 10.4.3 to 10.4.9
    2. Disks play fine in my Mac using DVD Player. Problem is only on my consumer player (Panasonic, aprox. 3 yrs old)
    Testing...
    1. I've tried various compression levels, 1 and 2 pass VBR and constant bit rate. (Using Compressor and/or DVDSP)
    2. I've tried using iDVD
    3. I have not yet tried burning from a disk image and forcing a reduced burn rate.
    4. Tried using a small piece of software called Visual Hub
    Specs:
    OS 10.4.9
    DVDSP 3.0.2
    Compressor 1.2.1
Length: I'm burning only a 2 min demo reel for my business (http://www.antifreezedesign.com) It's not a long program.
    Frustrations:
I can't upgrade DVDSP. Why can't we buy DVDSP standalone?! Does Apple think we're all video editors?
    Questions:
    1. As I test this out, can anyone help me understand the relationship between Compressor, DVDSP, and iDVD? Is testing different schemes in Compressor the same as testing them differently in iDVD or are the all accessing the same "encoding" software behind the scenes?
    2. Is there any connection/possible conflict to Quicktime that I should be aware of, or is this an unrelated piece of software?
    3. Is it advisable to re-install any of the software? I'm having trouble finding the 1.2.1 update to Compressor 1.2 that I have on disk.

  • Poor video playback from movies and DVD in Quicktime and DVD player

    Hello.
I have just taken delivery of a smashing Intel iMac C2D 20".
I appear to be having problems playing back video and DVD. let me explain:
When entering full screen on a DVD, the picture is very blocky (pixilated). This happens on all DVD discs I have used.
The same happens if I playback a MPEG or AVI, and also when I use Eye TV to playback TV.
I have run the Apple Hardware test, and it returned no faults.
The Video Card is the ATI Radeon X1600 with 256mb
I am sure that there is a problem because I have just compared playback using my old G5 iMac and G4 Powerbook using the same media files and DVD's and they playback fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions (other than calling Tech Support at this stage as I will blow a fuse after being on the phone for 1.5 hours getting nowhere, and with agents not knowing which keypresses to initiate stuff - sorry - Rant over - I just want to get this resolved)
As a side note: I have just installed Windoze XP on a partition, and the playback of DVD and MPEGS are fine - so it leads me to think maybe its software??
Not one to let things get the better of me - I installed Real Player and VLC.
BOTH of these play back the media correctly.
So I guess it is Software for sure, and I guess its Quicktime. Does Quicktime run DVD Player as well?
I did a roll back to a previous version of Quicktime, and it screwed up the mac. It would book, but would not load the Finder.
So I archived and reinstalled, and I had 7.1.2 QT, and the problem was still there. So up again to 7.1.3 and problem still persists.
I have come to the conclusion that this is to do with Quicktime on a C2D processor iMac.
Can anyone shed any light on this or suggest a solution?
    Manythanks
    Glenn

Such a minor and trivial question but just curious. It defaults to 'Faults, Events, and Audit Log'. A majority of the time that's all you'll need after initial setup, but I was wondering if I could somehow set the filter to 'All' as the default view.
