10.4.6 Update disaster

Since I updated to 10.4.6, my hard drive seems to have disappeared, and I can't see it in disk utility.
I tried disk Utility with my MacOS InstallCD : it sees my hard drive, but the volume is not mounted (and can't be !!!). Of course it can't be repaired.
I erased my hard drive, and I'm now trying to re install.
I had bought my DualG4 with Mac OS 10.2. (which comes with MacOS 9.2)
Then I bought Tiger last year.
I thought I had to reinstall 10.2 (because I need to have MacOS 9), so that's what I did ; but since, each time I try to boot, after a few seconds there's a message that says : "you need to restart your computer" !!!!
I'm fed up with Update problems (3 months ago, I had big FireWire troubles after an update).
Can anybody help me ?

Thanks for you answer !
Actually, I could boot into MacOS9 until the day I installed MacOS 10.4.6 Update.
After this update, I couldn't boot into Mac OS 9 anymore.
After this update, my hard drive did not appear in Disk Utility any longer.
So I decided to erase my hard drive and re-install everything.
I finally managed to re-install Mac OS 10.2 yesterday (with the Install CD that came with my G4).
Then I connected to the Internet, and I made all the updates (til Mac OS 10.2.8) ; everything seemed to be OK.
So I tried to install Mac OS X Tiger (the install CD I bought last year). The installation quits after 20 minutes, and there's a message that says there has been some errors during the installation, and I have to try again.
I tried to install Tiger 5 times (archive and install, or erase and install, etc...). The same thing happened.
My hard drive is formatted with HFS+ (extended and journalled). The 10.4 Disk Utiliyty says tha hard drive is OK.
I'm beginning to... cry.

  • Does an upgrade cure an update disaster?

I have an iMac my family uses running Snow Leopard and during the automatic Software Update installation of the 10.6.8 Update last year the Mac hung:
10.6.8 update crashed before it completed and now the Finder won't launch.
Fortunately for me, I had downloaded the 10.6.8 Combo Update separately because the iMac I use is not connected to the WWW. I was able to recover enough that my family is able to continue to use the iMac even though I know that it isn't as stable nor as fast as it was before the update hung.
I have purchased Lion but I have only used it to upgrade the iMac's flawed contents that I imaged onto a FW800 HDD. Lion runs faster on the external FW800 HDD and is more stable than Snow Leopard is running on the internal SATA HDD.
Did the upgrade from 10.6.8 to 10.7 on the FW800 eliminate all the bad "juju" from the 10.6.8 update disaster (and I can now image it back to the internal HDD) or is there still a high probability that something is still lurking in 10.6.8?
    TIA.

    mende1,
While I would have agreed with you BEFORE I tried it, it seems that whatever is wrong with my 10.6.8 confiugration, upgrading it to 10.7 absolutely made the resulting OS much more faster (despite running from an FW800 external HDD) and stable than before the upgrade. And I don't question one iota that a clean install would eliminate all concerns of any leftover problems (only new ones).
However, there seems to be quite a bit of problems, I've read here and elsewhere, when doing a clean install and then using Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant using the 10.6 image, or Migration Assistant using Time Machine. So it seems that an upgrade avoids those issues with the various Assistants. What would you suggest if I did do a clean install?
BTW, where did you learn that 10.8 "will be launched next week" other than we're running out of July?

  • Update Disaster. Graphics card problems.

    (yes, MORE problems!)
Ok I dont really think its a disaster but it sure fells like it.
My computer (G5 desktop OS 10.4.9, no intel) crashed and powed down during an update. Now nothing functions properly! I get this when it starts.
    Sysmquickmenu quit unexpectadly.
    and: archiveassistant quit unexpectadly.
AND: sh:line 1 command not found. Operation not permitted.
Also my itunes says its version 7.1.1 but the new features are not visable.
My graphics card seems to be glitching when i start up.
The screen color is very dark, i notice when i exit a Hi-Def game the color returns to normal. So when i start up i enter the game and then exit, to see properly.
By the way im using an Apple LCD Cinema Display

I also experienced problems with my graphics card after installing the latest update via the "software update" application. I have the standard GeForce FX 5200 installed in my Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz. After the update, the available resolutions listed in my "display preferences" were changed. Several additional resolutions were added, most of which were "interlaced." I normally run my display, a Sony Multiscan crt, at 1024 x 768. This was now only available as a "interlaced" option, which would not display properly on my monitor. I downloaded the 10.4.9 Combo Updater directly from the Apple web site. Once I ran the combo updater, it removed the "interlaced" options and restored my normal choices. Everything is now running smoothly. If anyone is having graphics card issues, I would give the combo updater a try.

  • 10.5.3 update disaster PowerBook G4

ok, normally i never have problems like this, and apparently no one else is having this one specifically. - -
    - i hope someone can stomach my longwinded description of what happened enough to help. -
i updated to 10.5.3, rebooted fine. then i couldent mount my usb key, or any FAT32 formatted drive it would seem, cd-rw's wouldent mount either. getting fed up i rebooted, i have my machine set to verbose login, and amidst the booting process, i keep seeing 'Reportcrash[##]: Saved crashreport to etc etc.. all down the screen every few seconds, i let it boot all night in the hopes it would someday get finished booting, it dident. i was presented with a screen of reportcrash's and the os would not boot, only booting into safe boot it works, but not so well. -
    - no i did not check permissions before i did this.
so, i reinstalled leopard, told it to grab my time machine backup of 10.5.2, did that. couldn't login. that another issue though (i think), so i reinstalled again w/o using my backup at first. used migration assistant to get my backup all on the machine, performed permission repairs once my original backup was up and running. - - ran software update once more, (it was a 10.5.0 disk so it thought it was at 10.5.0) when i ran software update it had a bunch of updates, including the 10.5.3 combo update. told it to update and it IMMEDIATELY asked me to reboot. - - now i know i couldn't have downloaded them that fast. but i obliged, rebooted, claimed to have installed things, came back and it was 10.5.3. - - same problems, it wanted nothing to do with mounting FAT32 volumes, and eventually i rebooted, just to see the same reportcrash errors over and over again... - - i could try various methods w/ my backup, or just forgo updating to 10.5.3 at all. anyone have some suggestions?

heres one of the several reportcrashes, i believe this one is from when it was booting.

  • Please help!  Security update disaster!

    Hello,
I have read about the security update doing some ill things to peoples macs with their networks and such but mine seems a little stranger.
After updating to the most recent security update, my mac restarted and had a "aqua" screen for almost 30 mins. With nothing else on the screen, i grew inpatient and restarted by pushing the power button for a few seconds. It restarted to an all black screen saying something about 'darwin kernel'. it asked for a login and password, but in an all black screen (think DOS). after trying different incorrect attempts it restarted and now I have to log in as fast as I can because the login screen only stays up for a few seconds before it dissapears. After I log in, the log in screen never goes away it constantly states that it is still logging in. The login screen is on top of everything and won't go away and cannot be covered.
Everytime I restart I am asked to enter a password to get back on my wireless network. Also, my disk utility does not start up. it tries but it unexpectedly quits. I get a crash report that says ( exception: EXCBADACCESS (0X0001) CODES: KERNPROTECTIOINFAILURE (0X0002) AT 0X0000001c
it seems like the rest of my programs work and my info is still here.
    someone please help.

    Hi Joseph
The best thing would be to run Repair Disk from your Install Disk.
The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive. Simply loading the install disk is not sufficient. You have to boot from the install disk.
To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart, then continue to hold down the C key until the Apple logo appears.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to Utilities and navigate to the Disk Utilities application.
Select the start up drive, then follow the instructions in the First Aid pane where you can click on Repair Disk.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.
Once restarted normally run Repair Permissions. from the Disk Utility application found on your hard drive in Application/Utilities.
    regards roam

  • ITunes 12 Playlists on a NAS and syncing

    iTunes 12 update disaster..
My library is stored on a NAS device which when selected as the music library no longer gives me a method to drag and drop tracks to a device, as the devices are no longer listed in the sidebar when a NAS based library is selected.!
This in itself is not great..
Plus the palava of getting the sidebar to appear and the column browser to appear every session is equally irksome.
The 'new' way to get tracks onto a device seems to be to create a playlist by dragging and dropping tracks via right hand 'add to playlist' sidebar.
This would be okay and quite user friendly EXCEPT..
It seems that you cannot create Playlists within a NAS based library..!
Has anybody else had this issue and found a working solution please?

I've the latest Fw for my Linkstation. The issue ia weid, as I can access the files THROUGH the finder no problem.
I have my standard iTunes library on my internal hd. The NAS is used for archiving all my CDs. Eventually it wil be used in a Sonos system for high quality streaming. When I am archiving, I Option+Click on iTunes and select the external library. Otherwise, I use the internal library (lossy) for all my other iTunes needs.

  • How do I get a Bootable drive to be recognized?

I reinstalled OS 10.4 from original DVD after 10.4.9 update disaster. All went okay with the Archive and Reinstall. However, when I restart, I get the folder with the question mark and then the system boots from another internal drive with 10.3.4 installed. Disk utility shows the 10.4 drive as bootable. I am able to choose the 10.4 drive using Startup Disk. But it won't boot. I've Repaired Permissions and Repaired Disk. Any ideas?

  • Help, I just updated to iOS 8 and all my pages documents have disappeared! This is a disaster ! Can I get them from the cloud? If so how and can I do it without a PC or laptop?

I Have just updated to iOS 8 and have lost all my Pages docs this is a huge disaster. Is there any way to get them back ? I hope that they are in the cloud but I have never used it to get anything back before. Can any one help. Is it possible to do this without a PC or laptop?

You really need to try this on a computer, not on the iPad.
Seeing how what is in the cloud is also on the iPad, if the content is not on the iPad, there is a good chance that the content is lost. But you can try logging into www.icloud.com in a web browser on a computer and log into your account and see if you can get into the Pages app. You may have to sign up for iCloud drive if you didn't do so already. Make SURE you that you read the blurb that will pop up in that window in iCloud for more information.

  • Update to Premier CS6 6.0.2 turned my project into a disaster.

I just updated from Premier CS6 6.0.0 to 6.0.2. My existing project is now a disaster:
I can't toggle through .pngs or .jpgs on my timeline without a 10 second delay without a render.
The rendering of 1 still image can take up to one hour.
My audio often is not audible.
When the program freezes, my whole computer shuts down unexpectedly.
In other words, I'm unable to continue working on my project. My project worked seemlessly before the update.
I've tried deleting render files, working with still images off a new project and drive with same problems. And everything else I could think of.
I'm on new MacBook Pro Retina
    2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    16GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024MB
    Mac OS X Lion
    Any suggestions?

Does your project use CUDA-accelerated Mercury Playback?  Did you have to employ the "hack" to get hardware MPE on your system?  If so, then the update probably reset the hack and now you're having to work with software MPE only.  Re-hack the text file, or just delete it to bring back hardware MPE.
If that's not the issue, then try creating a brand new project and import the old one into it.  You can also try deleting all of your cache files and cleaning the media cache database.

  • The Google/AT&T Lollipop update was a disaster

The Google/AT&T Lollipop update was a disaster. I now have a hot pink and baby blue calender. The battery drained, in standby, at 2% per minute, multiple attempts were required for it to start up (link to network) it dropped calls like crazy, font too small to read etc. My phone worked just fine. If it isn’t broken . . . don’t fix it. I am willing to switch carriers (after 30 years) and phone makers as necessary to escape this carnival of errors . . . complete with clown color scheme.

    What phone?
There is a big change in lollipop android went from dalvik to ART.  A factory reset might just fix the problem.  Or clear your cache first.

  • Updating to iOS 8 is a disaster if you want to use your HDMI cable to watch catch up TV

IT is a warning to prevent other people from making this mistake

I have been using iPhone from a very long time and I'm aware of it completely. It's not like if I did something wrong. All what I did is tab "Downoad and Install" in the software update screen. I have never encountered such thing.
Nearly every iOS upgrade since the beginning has followed the same procedure, so you must have seen it already. What you did "wrong" was not have a regular backup schedule, nor did you back up before tapping Download and Install.
And by the way, Apple is not here to help you. This is a user-supported help forum. If you want to speak to Apple support, you must do that elsewhere: http://www.apple.com/support/

  • Mac OS X 10.5.3 update is a disaster

    Hello!
After updating to version 10.5.3, my mac seems to be experiencing a lot of problems. Anyone experienced the same?
    Activity Monitor
    UserEventAgent is no longer responding
    Coreaudiod is no longer responding
com.apple.Qmaster.statusmenu is not responding after a few minutes
CompressorTranscoder is not responding after a few minutes
I have frequent system crashes that I'm forced to do a hard restart:
System crashed when quick pre-viewing photos accessed from the AFP network
MAMP seems to be having compatibility issues with 10.5.3
    1. MAMP's built-in apache and mysql servers are not responding even if you see a "green" status. Stopping servers won't work. Solving the issue is either you have to put the whole MAMP folder to the trash and re-install MAMP again. But the problem will get back when you do a computer restart.
    2. When the built-in MAMP servers are running, the system probably doesn't like it so it crashes for a certain point in time.
Some third-party external drives can no longer be formatted using disk utility in 10.5.3 (it says I/O error). What the...?
Some third-party external devices fails to unmount (it's always saying to try to quit running applications even if no apps are running other than the Finder; relaunching the Finder doesn't help).
I can no longer burn DVDs/CDs using Roxio Toast Titanium 7.0.
Apple... just what are you doing??

The crashes you're experiencing could be caused by any number of different things, but one thing to check is whether you are using a Proxy server to connect to the internet. (Check in System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced). Some companies and many universities and libraries use proxy servers (automatic proxy.pac files) to let you access premium content from off-site. The OS 10.5.3 combo update seems to have introduced a compatibility bug that leads to crashes with proxy servers.
From your description, I can't tell whether this is what you're experiencing, but it may be related. So if you are using a proxy server, turn it off in System Preferences and try without.
If this indeed turns out to be the problem and you need to use a proxy server for work/research, then you should try Firefox (new version: Firefox 3 was just released last week) instead of Safari, and install one of the proxy extensions (e.g. FoxyProxy or SwitchProxy). Firefox handles proxies inside the browser (as opposed to the system-wide level, which is what Safari is doing). That allows you to switch your proxy server on and off. I've been using it with my proxy server and it's very stable. With FoxyProxy, you can even define site-specific browser behavior.

  • Help! Mac update 10.4.6 disaster

Went to do automatic update, since then a nightmare. No apps such as Microsoft Office and Palm are able to run...Bluetooth (mouse) also finicky. I keep getting messages:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "Transport Montitor" or "Palm Desktop Background", etc. could not be launched because of shared library error, for example:
    ",<Transport Montitor><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_QD>"
Have ibook G4, and have used Mac since the early 80's...this baffles me, especially since this "patch" has hobbled me..
    input greatly appreciated.

Hi A. Brody. I don't understand why my total posts states 1. I've been posting here over the years numerous times.
Basically, World of Warcraft seems to be crashing until 10.4.6 for the PPC and if you look at the Mac WoW forums, you'll see an increasing amount of people reporting similar experiences.
With 10.4.6 being the only new variable on my mac since the 1.10 patch for WoW came out about 2 weeks ago, I wanted to see if there was a way to revert back to 10.4.5 so I performed a search and came across Vipir's "Revert t o 10.4.5 and hold off for Apple to fix this. " in the results. In reading the thread, I didn't see any instructions on how to do that, hence why I posted in this thread. It made sense that if someone proposed the idea, then the process in how to execute the idea should be presented in the same area.
