10.4.6 update issues with Powerbook G4

I have witnessed an error resulting from the 10.4.6 software update on two independent computers, and am stumped as to why I can't find any other references to it.
When I first installed the update (about a week or two after release), my computer's restart looked a bit odd: My wallpaper came up, along with the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner. The bar cut off after the icon, with the wallpaper behind it (as opposed to a blank bar). The screen remained frozen like this for a few minutes, before the OS finally came up looking normal. After that, the computer was not running so hot, so I ran disc utility, which seems to have helped a little, but not much.
Programs that once ran stable—text edit, safari, etc.—will freeze for no reason. When I try to force quit, the little "program running" triangle remains on the dock. If I pull up the "force quit" dialogue box rather than ctrl-clicking on the dock icon, it disappears from that boxes program list, but remains on the dock. My external harddrive, which I also repaired, isn't always recognized when plugged in, especially after the computer freezes and I have to restart.
I recently saw the similar problem arise in a Powerbook that is unrelated to mine—and more than a year newer than mine, from the last generation of G4 Powerbooks. The main difference is that after the installation of 10.4.6, this Powerbook had to go to to a repair shop and its owner had to pay $60 bucks (software problems aren't covered under Apple's lovely warranty) startup her computer, which now runs smoothly. When the computer powered on, the same wall-paper-and-spotlight-corner screen from my first restart appeared. I suspect that she might have given up and powered off too quickly after restarting, and somehow made the hang-up permanent.
The only bug description mildly close I have found to this issue is here:
http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=tiger&Number=759499&pa ge=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=31&fpart=1
The only similarity is that I use an external harddrive to hold most of my music. However, I haven't really made any major file moves, which is the main focus of this post. The PB that was repaired had been connected to my external harddrive, but several months before the 10.4.6 install (the computer was two time zones away when the error popped up.
Illegal names in the catalog file seem to be what disc utility said it was repairing on all three discs.
Any guesses as to what's wrong and/or recommendations on how to fix this myself would be appreciated. And did I do a bad job of searching, or am I just in contact with the only two computers that encountered this?
Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.
Additionally, if you are you running any Adobe CS 2 applications, there is a bug in the Adobe "Legal" folders (Photoshop) anyway that generates an "illegal name" error. If you're running CS 2, trash the legal folders in each application, including Adobe Bridge. Then run disk repair again, until it reports no errors.

  • Updating Issue with iTunes 7.0.1.8

A few weeks ago I made the jump to the newly released iTunes 7.0. I had a slew of issues with this update (which by the way Apple has still not provided a working solution for), which I addressed in detail in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3170496#3170496
Today I updated to the new iTunes 7.0.1.8. There were no issues during the installation itself, however afterwards is a completely different story. When I attempt to open iTunes, I receive the following error message: "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
My first thought was to see if Quicktime is working normally. It is. No problem there. I thought perhaps I should try repairing the installation. So I went to Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Software > iTunes. I attempted to use the 'repair' option. This did not work at all.
At this point I restarted my computer and uninstalled iTunes. I restarted once again and reinstalled. When the installation had finished I received the prompt, "would you like to run iTunes after the installation is completed?" I clicked 'yes.' iTunes opened, no problem.
I closed iTunes and attempted to reopen it normally. It would not open, instead giving me the same message: "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."
I thought the previous issues with iTunes not recognizing my iPod were bad enough but now I can't even open iTunes at all. This is absolutely unacceptable on Apple's part. It was bad enough that they released 7.0 with all its bugs, but at this point they should have their act together. Instead the problems are getting worse.

Please let me know if I can get rid of this feature.
    You sure can.
iTunes View menu > Hide MiniStore will do the trick.

  • Serious boot issues with Powerbook G3 (Wallstreet II, OS 9.2.2)

    Hello,
I have major issues with a Powerbook Wallstreet II I got recently. When it's finally running, it works just as well as Wallstreet Powerbooks usually do, no errors, no crashing, smooth performance, everything fine.
But booting it up is, to put it mildy, a bloody pain. First off, it does not power up, when it's only connected to batteries. I have two of them, both working fine for several hours when put in after bootup, but no matter if I place one or both of them in any bays, nothing happens when pressing or holding the power button (apart from screen flickering and speaker crackling). I'm always forced to connect the power adapter, which immediatly (without pressing the power button) causes the power LED to light and the cooling fan insanely spins up for a mere couple of split seconds until everything wents silent again.
Having reached this point, I can disconnect the power supply (if at least one battery is in) and usually hear a nice "BONG" when pressing the power button once again. Thereafter, nothing happens for a oppressive 30 seconds, then, the screen finally lits and shows the Mac OS 9.2.x splash screen on monochrome background. Sadly, this is already the end of most of my first boot up tries, because at this point, I usually get told by a dialogbox that a bus error has just happened. The box also has a nice "Reboot" button, which I cannot click as the trackpad hangs as well.
Pressing ShiftFn+CrtlPower works here in about one out of three time, so in most cases, I have to go through the same procedure. Pull out power sources, give a shot via PSU, have it iddling for 30 secs. In most cases, this second try lets me pass splash screen, loader, yes, it even lets me see the desktop, the taskbar, the HDD icon and... pouf. Success is so close but no, it has to suddenly drop into sleep mode and
a short press on power proves the apprehension true, that it won't be easy to wake it up again. Hrmph. But I don't give that easily. So pulling everthing out for the second time, connect PSU for the third time and look there, it fully boots.
Three tries to successfully boot is about average at first try series. Afterwards, it seems to be "warmed up" and things get easier. I made a log recently with 5 test series, made at very frequent intervals:
    Series 1:
    1. Bootup: Bus Failure (Hard reboot fails) (bays empty)
    2. Bootup: Sleep Mode (bays empty)
    3. Bootup: Sleep Mode (bays empty)
    4. Bootup: Sleep Mode (both batteries)
    5. Bootup: Bus Failure (Hard reboot successful)(both batteries)
    6. Bootup: Success (left battery, right bay empty)
    Series 2:
    1. Bootup: Success(left battery, right bay empty)
    Series 3:
    1. Bootup: Bus Failure (!!!) (left battery, right bay empty)
    2. Bootup: Success (bays empty)
    Series 4:
    1. Bootup Success (left bay empty, right battery)
    Series 5:
    1. Bootup Success (both batteries)
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

    jpl,
    Thank you for continuative support.
If you plan on buying a 256MB memory module, the Wallstreet requires
a 256 specifically made for it (and the early iMac
and Lombard). Modules 128MB and smaller can be
generic if they meet the Wallstreet's specs.
    Thanks for this information.
You might find it useful to disassemble the 'book to the PMU, carefully remove/reseat the PMU card, then test.
Well, to be honest, I don't have the time to perform this very labour-intensive work. However, I pulled out the large PMU connector (the one that can be reached by lifting the keyboard) and reseated it, without any results. Shouldn't that suffice? Or is there another connection that could need maintenance?
Regarding sleep: There is no display position sensor, only a simple magnet in the right display bezel approximately 4" from the bottom...you can stick a paperclip to it. When the display closes, it triggers a sleep switch located next to the delete key in the side rail.
    Ah, okay.
According to Apple, if the powerbook will not run on battery, it could be the charge card or PMU board or power supply card or logic board. However, your 'book apparently runs on battery once started via power adapter.
Actually, it does not allow me to power up, if I attach the adapter right after an unsuccessful try to operate from battery. Even if I remove the batteries (after adapter connection).
It's like it is "crashed" before it's even running. Which means, I have to pull all power sources to be able to perform the resuscitating power up via adaptor.
A normal power manager reset on the Wallstreet is this:
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Simultaneously press Shift-Fn (function)-Ctrl >(control)-Power.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the PowerBook >computer.
A successful reset will briefly flash the sleep light plus >spin up the fan for a second. If a reset does not solve the >startup and sleep issues, then you will have to look >elsewhere.
I can see the sleep LED and I do hear the fan, however, this didn't help in most cases. After perfoming this action (in a freeze situation), I usually only got rattling noises out of the speakers or screen flashes when trying to power up.
Be sure the powerbook only freezes when closing the display to sleep it.
Well, I noticed it sometimes also freezes when left idle directly after start up (and power save is activated). Later, it comes right back again.
    - Is the sleep light blinking before you open the display?
    Yes.
    - When the display is opened, does the sleep light continue to blink? (It should.)
    Yes.
    - When you press the power button, do you hear a 'buzz' or some similar noise? If you do, you may have another issue to explore.
No. I usually only hear speaker noise when trying to power up from battery. But oddly enough, the lenght of the sleep light blinks changes when power button is hold down in "frozen sleep".
I would also go to the System Folder > Preferences folder and drag the Energy Saver Preferences to the Trash, close all windows, then restart...a new preference file will be created on restart. You can reset the Energy Saver to your like, then test sleep.
    Done.
-Does sleep/wake always work when NOT closing the display? Try this after resetting the power manager and trashing the pref file mentioned below.
If I initiate sleep, yes. If it suspends automatically, well, usually. But not always (see above).

  • Camera RAW update issue with Bridge CS6

    Hi folks,
I recently installed a routine update for Camera RAW 8.4 and now have a bunch of issues with Bridge including -
    - No previews or ratings showing
    - Ratings filter not working
    - Can't open images directly into Camera RAW without first opening Photoshop (ie - keyboard shortcut not working and File menu command "Open in Camera raw" not available)
    - Can't access or open Camera RAW preferences
I've tried resetting Bridge to default settings but didn't help and ACR still works fine opening in PS. I've attached two screenshots to show the problem better.
Anyone else having these problems? Any solutions?

  • Airport Express (n) signal issues with Powerbook G4

    Here is my setup:
    1 Airport Express (n)
    1 Cradlepoint CTR500 router
    1 Lenovo PC Laptop
    1 Powerbook G4 12"
I have a printer hooked up to the Airport Express as well as my stereo. I have the AX set to 802.11n (b/g compatible) for the Powerbook. My laptop (PC) is n. The Powerbook is approx 10 feet away from the AX, and there is a wall with a door between the two. No electronics are between in the wall, etc. Its a pretty strait shot, except for the wall.
I have noticed that the Powerbook will show 5 bars for Airport, and after a little bit, go down to 2 bars, or even 1. It will stay there, couple of mins at the most, then shoot back up. Sometimes I have to disconnect (turn airport off) and then reconnect to establish 5 bars.
Now, I have also noticed on my PC that (being 3 feet away from the AX) I will sometimes go from 5 bars to 4, and my laptop will register anywhere from 14 Mbps up to ~150 Mbps connection. It settles around 72 Mbps when the Powerbook is connected to the network. So why under normal web page browsing, does my speed drop to 14, 28, 36 Mbps, yet show signal strength at 4 bars, or even 5, usually when the Powerbook is connected? In addition, and I understand that the 54G rated Powerbook will slow the network down all around, why is it that the Powerbook will drop from 5 bars down to 2, or even 1 in the airport menu? Is the AX changing channels? I have manually set it to channel 8 to see if that was the problem, and it didn't seem to solve anything.
I am kind of at a loss here. Perhaps interference? I do live in an old 100+ year old house, so that might be an issue? I will say that when I set it to N 5GHz, my laptop will connect and maintain a 300 Mbps speed. That's pretty good IMHO. So since that stays connected properly, I can only assume that it is a 2.4 GHz interference issue with neighbors, upstairs phones (this is an apartment) or other devices perhaps.

I think you're probably right that you're getting intermittent interference at 2.4 GHz.
Suggest you try [iStumbler|http://istumbler.net]. Monitor it for a day or so to get an idea of which channels your neighbors may be using. Then, set the AX to one as different from the others as possible. If the interference problem returns, try another open channel.
Also, try activating interference robustness on the AX and Powerbook.

  • 10.4.8 update - issues with mail and airport

Gah! Just as I was signing up so I could post on this board, my airport connection went bye-bye.
Initially I tinkered with my router (linksys) settings. Recycled everything a bajillion times. Not sure what caused a partial resolution, but my connection is no longer crawling, but it drops a few times a day. The only solution at this point is to recycle modem and router and restart computer.
Now I am having issues with my mail application. Whenever I "get mail" I am prompted for my password. I type it in, plus check the box "add to keychain". App searches for mail. So I went into account prefs and noticed there is no password in the dialog box. I type it in. If I save and close the dialog and then reenter, the password is once again missing. Huh??
So I reinstalled with the combo update (I had previously installed via software update), verifying/repairing disk before, repairing permissions after.
I have removed the system config folder in order for the system to create a new one.
When I look in keychain access, the only thing in there is the airport login. I have also performed a keychain first aid. Nothing appears to be wrong.
    Any suggestions??
    I patiently await responses.
Oh, and I applied the first update in proper fashion as well. No weird third party stuff, etc. And I didn't have any of these issues pre-update...
    mbp   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    1. Reset the router by holding down the button in the
    rear for 10 seconds.
I've done that ad nauseum, plus tweaked router settings, plus recycled modem/router many times. It does not appear to be a problem with the router hardware or software.
    2. Toss your Mail Account, and make a new one.
If indeed that is the solution, is there an efficient way to save/export messages so I don't lose them?

  • Has anyone had app update issues with iOS 8.1?

I'm running iOS 8.1 on a iPhone 6+.  If I try to update an app from the app store without being logged in, it will hang the process and the update will fail.
Previously, with my iPhone 4 and iOS 7.1.2 the app store would ask me to log in when an app update was attempted without being logged in.
The work around until apple fixes this bug is to ensure you are logged in BEFORE attempting an app update.  An honest techie at the local apple store admitted this is a bug (one of many) in iOS 8.1.  Has anyone else had this issue with iOS 8.1

Nope, I'm able to update an app in iOS 8.1, even if I'm not first logged into the iTunes & App Store in Settings.  It prompts me to update the app, then I sign in with my password.
Do you have Touch ID enabled for App Store or not?

  • Latest Firmware Update Issues with Screen Sensitivity

    Hi All,
I synced my original iphone a few days ago and it required a firmware update. Since then, I have had numerous problems with the touchscreen for email and texting. Sometimes, I cannot open a folder on one of my emails or send a text because hitting the "send" icon does nothing. I've restarted my phone and reset it but have not yet tried a restore. Had anyone else had these issues?
And do you have any other suggestions I should try before doing a restore? Many thanks.

  • Major Sync and software update issue with windows 7 and iphone

Loved my iPhone 3g and love my 4.0! My only concern is syncing and software updates are sporadic.
When I first purchased and sync'd my 3g on my laptop, that I had since 2005 w/XP home 64bit, it would constantly (1 out of 5 times) show phone was disconnected and could not sync. Purchased a desktop, 2009 w/Vista 64bit (same issue mentioned continued) then upgraded to windows 7 64bit (same issue mentioned continued).
Both pc's are authorized and contain the same apps and software. I went through all trouble shooting steps (authorize/deauthorize, phone hard boot, sync w/airplane mode on and/or off, uninstall and or reinstall iTunes, etc...) when both phones would brick after software updates on both pc's.
The last software update 4.0 and most recent 4.2.1 went well on laptop with XP and no longer shows sync issue. The problem continues on the windows 7 and backup has completed successfully 3 times.
Long story short, I have to pray the laptop never dies because iTunes, syncing and software updates on XP works now! The problem with software update, backups and syncing persists on windows 7.
    * I was able to apply 4.2.1 software update on XP and then connect to windows 7 to sync and backup successfully. I then disconnected/reconnected iphone to windows 7 and problem happened again, unable to sync phone was disconnected error message.

I've had my new pc for over a year, never had any probs syncing my iphone (then a 3G but now the big 4!)
I went to sync updates to Apps and a couple of tunes I had downloaded straight to my phone only to get an error message 'iTunes has stopped working - windows is checking the problem' followed by another messaged telling me there was a problem causing the program not to work correctly. Windows will close the program and notify me if a solution is found'
Well..... I have NO music on my iPhone and every time I try to sync, the same error messages come up and the bloody program shuts down....

    Hi Aniruuthan,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPhone is not recording sound along with video, I recommend these troubleshooting steps:
Make sure nothing is plugged in to the jack connector.
Make sure nothing is blocking any of the microphones (see the pictures below to locate the microphones on your device)
Make sure none of the microphones is obstructed by dirt or debris.
Turn the iPhone off and then on.
