10.4.6 Update killed my FW800 card

I have an Orange Micro Firewire 800 PCI card, which gives me three ports. Ever since I updated to 10.4.6, no devices connected to the card are accessible. System Profiler simply reports an unkown device, and the drives do not appear in Disk Utility at all. I have confirmed that all drives work via the internal FW800 port.
I removed the card and reseated it. After I did that, a drive mounted. But when I attempted to access it, it completely froze my machine. Upon reboot, I got a kernel panic. Lovely.
I doubt Apple will do anything about this until at LEAST the next Tiger update, but I thought I should mention it. Meanwhile I'm gonna have to go buy a different card in hopes that it will work...and I'm unable to work in the meantime.
Dual 2ghz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1gb RAM
Dual 2ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1gb RAM

Two thought's....well three really.
1. Resaet your PMU
2. Reset your nvram
3. Check with Orange Micro for updated firmware for your card
Hope one of those helps

  • Can bad ram kill your firewire card

i recently installed bad ram in my eMac
it was a 512 module given to me by my boss, we use macs at work so i figured it was safe. it was the right speed for my mac and it seemed great!
well, I installed and everything was going awesome. Until all of my pictures dissipeared out of iPhoto. they were still on the HD but vanished from the program. so I ran the hardware test and bad ram. I replaced it with the old ram and everything was fine, until I tried to dump some footage into iMovie.
Now iMovie will not reconize my camera and i am scared as i use this program the most. could this ram have killed my firewire card?
    Please Help

It sounds to me as though your problem goes beyond bad RAM. While a faulty RAM module may cause issues, they are generally performance issues. Disappearing photos sounds like a hard disk (or other) problem. Did Apple Hardware Test uncover any other issues? If there was something wrong with your FireWire inputs, Hardware Test should indicate so.
Try deleting your iMove preferences file (User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist). Log out and back in again; open iMove and try to reconnect your camera. Also, check with your camera's manufacturer to be sure that there are no firmware or driver updates for your model.
Report back, and we can take it from there.

because i just downloaded it on my iphone 3gs and when downloaded it , it tells youto put your language the your country then it takes you to wifi and i just wanted to know if i can download this without a sim card??

No, you must have a SIM card in the phone to restore our update it. The card does not have to be a currently active card, however.

  • FW800 Hard Drive Enclosure & FW800 Card

    Here's my setup:
Power Mac G4 Dual 533 Mhz (Digital Audio)
    896 MB RAM
    2 Internal HDD's - 40GB Master - 80GB Slave
    My FW ports are 400's.
I would like to get a FW800 drive enclosure(s) to move my existing external HDD's (80GB and 120GB) into. That means I need a FW800 card. I looked for a bit but the FW800 enclosures I'm finding are pricey for what I think they should be (I could be wrong), and most of them don't say whether they are 400 or 800.
I need 800, because I'm running a Pro Tools session at 96K, and the 400 bus just isn't hacking it. Any suggestions?
Oh, and incidentally, there's no size limit on hard drives when they are in firewire external enclosures, correct? I know internally it's 120 GB.

I must admit I didn't think there was much difference between FireWire 400 and 800 using a single drive due to the speed limitations of the drive itself. However, having seen the following tests, I'm not so sure:
    http://www.barefeats.com/usb2.html
All the FW800 enclosures I've seen are pricey, at least $90. I think it's safe to assume it they don't mention the speed it must be FW400. I'm not sure FW800 has been that widely adopted outside of Apple.
Although most modern enclosures seem to support larger drives, to be on the safe side I'd look for one where it's explicitly stated. The Oxford 911 and 912 chipsets seem to be the ones to look for (for FW400 and FW400/FW800 respectively).

Should I update my laptop graphics card or not? Is it possible to do so? Please help
My laptop model is HP Probook 4441s

    You're very welcome.
Your notebook has switchable graphics...an Intel UMA graphics chip which uses shared system memory, and an AMD Radeon HD 7650M graphics chip, which uses discrete graphics memory.
The AMD GPU with its discrete graphics memory are still chips soldered and integrated on the motherboard.
That's what it means.  You assumed it was a removable card, and it is not.
There is no reference to a graphics card in your model on any of the official HP specifications for your notebook.

  • MacOS X 10.4.9 Update Killed My Mac!

Today I tried to install the 10.4.9 update.
Something went wrong when installing the update and I got an error message saying that the installation was unsuccessful.
After restart my mac got stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo and a wheel spinning forever.
Fortunately I fixed the issue: http://net3x.blogspot.com/2007/03/macos-x-1049-update-killed-my-mac.html

Most likely, you could have avoided this problem if
you had followed Apple’s instructions for properly
    installing software updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software
    updates
Note that Apple doesn’t mention anywhere the need to
repair permissions either before or after installing
a system update, not even for troubleshooting system
update issues. It’s the disk itself (i.e. the
    filesystem) that should be verified/repaired
before installing anything. Note also that no
applications should be running while installing the
update and that you may experience unexpected results
if you have third-party system software modifications
    (not normal applications) installed.
I have to call complete and utter BS on this. I have been a mac user for more than 3 years. I have updated the day of almost every major update since 10.3.1 and 10.4.9 is by far the most problem prone thing I have ever seen apple put out. I have never once had a single issue where my mac would not boot after the install of an update. Now I have updated both my MacBook and Intel Mac Mini and both were dead in the water after the install. A different software suite is on both systems, and there is no "intrusive" 3rd party software that should cause any trouble. Thanks to the instructions above I was able to get back on-line and running 10.4.9, but something really needs to be done about these issues.

  • Killer k1 lan card

hi i have a killer k1 lan card and have archlinux 2012 with kde install and out of the box the card does not work, so i when to the killers website and all i saw was windows drivers? does this card have linux support? is there any thing in pacman that will make it work?
    thanks

Okay, I can give you this one because this was confusing for me at first as a newcomer.  In windows they call them drivers ( I can only assume that this must be because it was more human readable). While with Linux they are named for what they truly are.  They are an extension of the kernel and therefore a kernel module.  So driver and module are somewhat synonymous, though I think a Linux kernel module might be a broader term.
Apparently Barefoot has started using a different chipset from when that thread I mentioned was posted.  In that post it was an atheros.  But your chipset is actually the same as mine (though mine is revision 7).  All you have to do is install the r8168 package and follow the instructions pacman gives you in its output.  Read and follow the output of pacman carefully, else udev will continue to try to use the in-kernel r8169 module.  Maybe this might serve as a lesson for why the output of pacman is improtant.

All right, this is weird. I have a 64bit system with encrypted root, home and  swap partitions. To setup I followed the wiki here:

So the generation of the initramfs seems to be ok.
But when I reboot this box, I get:
    running hook [openswap]
device /dev/sda4 doesn't exist or access denied
    running hook [resume]

/dev/sda4 is my swap partition. Then I get dropped to a recovery shell which I can't use because my (usb) keyboard is not working.
Now the funny part. I start the box from a install cd and chroot into the existing installation. I do a
    mkinitcpio -p linux
The initramfs is regenerated and it works again! What the hell is pacman doing other than regenerate the initramfs with my presets?

New kernel 3.1.1 did it again. My system hangs in initramfs after the reboot. Same as before: a simple rebuild without any changes fixed the boot process. This time I was able to backup the 'bad' initramfs before chrooting in and rebuilding.
it is very funny to see the content of the 'bad' initramfs image - it is nearly empty!

Since I've had my new phone, I haven't been getting 3G. I have tried resetting my networks, Turing airplane mode off/on and restarting my phone. Nothing seems to work. Any info on what I should do next would be great.

If you have set this phone up, then there would not necessarily be a solution here until you have been verify with the provider that everything is provisioned correctly on their end. Since the 3G comes from your cellular provider, if the settings are correct on the phone, then you should work with the carrier next.

  • Updating Drivers for video card?

I have a G5 Quad with an Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT video card (installed by Apple at the time of purchase). I wanted to see if there were any new/updated drivers for my card, but when I go to Nvidia's website the card is not listed, nor are any Mac drivers that I can see. I checked Apple's site, CNET Downloads, and Google, but I'm coming up with nothing.
How are the drivers for video cards updated? Are the drivers included in various OS updates? Am I just looking in the wrong places?
    Thanks.

Thanks, maclover. And thanks for the warm welcome
My problem is specific to a piece of software... I'm using Lightwave, and recently added FPrime to Lightwave's functionality. FPrime is a third party plugin, and is widely used in the Lightwave community.
The problem is that if I open FPrime before OpenGL renders the objects in a scene on screen FPrime crashes (hard)... it's like a kernel panic and my only option is to shut down and reboot. However, if I let OpenGL render the objects first then FPrime opens fine.
I'm an active member of the Lightwave community, and I've been in contact with the maker of FPrime regarding this issue. My question about drivers stems from the fact that usually if something like this occurs then it may be related to the need to update card drivers.
    Thanks agian.
