10.4.6 update limbo, disk image mounts fail

Not sure what happened with the 10.4.6 update. Software Update was in process. Then I blinked and returned to a shut down machine. In "about the computer" the ac OS X version is listed as 10.4.6. But in System Preferences / Software Update, the 10.4.6 Mac OS update is not listed.
Another indication that all is not well, mounts for disk images fail. This means I cannot get at the standalone updater -- or an updated version of Cocktail.
Initial checks on the HD seem okay. All permissions repaired. What next to get out of this limbo?
(Other comments on using standalone updates instead of automatic Software Updates noted and appreciated -- but frustrating in this situatioin with failures on disk image mounts.

...I was able to recover. This was especially helpful since I'm travelling and don't have a firewire option available for the rest of the week.
Now I'm looking for ways to return steveo23's favor... places I can respond as "helpful" and not sure I'm connecting.

  • Disk image mounter out of order

    Hi List,
I already posted that question once a while but it wasn't answered so I come back.
Here it is, I am not able to mount any .dmg files on my G5 and this is REALLY annoying as I am noty able to expand any downloaded .dmg for applications and so on ...
I would really appreciate to have support about that.
I can give more details if needed, and no : selecting disk image mounter to open the .dmg does not help anyhow ...
    Best
    Sylvain

Well - a search in that other forum on ".dmg files will not mount" finds several threads on similar problems, including
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2282748#2282748
You could try re-installing the 10.4.7 combo updater

  • Disk Image Mounter is missing

I recently bought my mac, and i haven't been able to download anything, I don't have Disk Image Mounter, I have searched and searched even went as far as reinstalling the MacOSX bundle, and i still don't have it, I have not been able to download anything from the net since i bought it, is there a place where i can download it or do i just need to get on the phone with apple care and pitch a fit?

The path to DiskImageMounter is /System/Library/CoreServices.
If you're sure you don't have it. You can copy it from another Intel Mac, or You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.6 Stand Alone Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Alternatively you might get someone to email you the app it's only 172K. Ask them to .zip it for safe transport.
    Good luck. Let us know.

  • Encrypted Disk Image mounts without Password

I've created a new encrypted disk image so that I can store sensitive documents and did it carefully, step by step,(per instructions from www.macworld.com/2425) but after I unmounted, then remount, it doesn't ask me for a password. It just mounts as if it were a regular file. Am I suppose to unmount the volume and drag the disk image to the trash? I don't know what else to try.

The Mac uses and encrypted database of keys called the "Keychain". When you login, it opens the "login" keychain using your login password. That keychain can be used to provide passwords for applications and services, and form data for web sites. In this particular case, the password for your encrypted disk image is being stored in the keychain and automatically provided.
If another user attempted to open the disk image, the disk image mounter would first look in his keychain and then the system keychain for a key to open it with. Finding none, it would prompt the user to specify the key (password). If the user supplies the correct password, the system would put it in his keychain for safe keeping, and the user would then be able to open the image again without supplying the password.
You can remove the key from your keychain by opening up /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, selecting the "login" keychain, and then looking for an entry with a name that matches the .dmg file in question. Highlight it, and then press the delete key to delete it. The next time you attempt to open it, it will prompt you for a password.

  • Another OS 10.4.11 update problem - disk images won't mount?

    Hi people,
Have never had to post on these boards as i've never suffered serious problems with my mac, until today.
Whilst installing/updating my powerbook to version 10.4.11 my mac seemed to crash so i rebooted my system. Probably not the best thing to do (i have little patience so was annoyed).
I'm guessing the update installed as my mac says it is now version 10.4.11 but when i go to mount any disk images it will not mount at all, but instead comes up with this message -
"The following disk image failed to mount
    Reason - error 0xe00002c9"
I've verified and repaired the permissions on the startup drive in disk utility, and also verified the volumed and it says everything is ok in those departments. Although the option to repair the disk is not available for selection.
I've downloaded applejack, but obviously can't mount the image file.
Please help as this is a big problem with regards to my work and play!
    Thanks for reading.

Hmm thank you for your time and effort on this problem BDAqua but unfortunately it still doesn't want to work! The 'DMG utility' program comes back with an error when trying to mount any of the disk images i have tried. I have been able to get up the script of what its doing in the 'console' application but that is ridiculously long, and i'd be lying if i said i have a single clue about what any of the script in it means!
So i'm guessing i'm gunna be archiving and re-installing. But this boads another question as i haven't a slightest clue about how to archive my files as i really don't want to lose any of it.
    sorry BDAqua

  • Disk image mounting and disk utility oddities on Xserve running OS X Server

I continue to run into an odd problem on one of my server setups. It is a 1.33 GHZ Xserve running OS X Server 10.4.11. There are four ATA drive installed (two of which are mirrored using Softraid 3.6.6). There are a total of 6 Firewire drives on the Firewire 800 Bus. Three of those are used for sharing out files and the other three are for various backups.
What happens is that I sometimes run into an issue where dmg files will not mount. There are no error messages and nothing in the log, they just don't open. Likewise I am unable to launch Disk Utility, it just spins and spins never displaying the drives, again nothing in the logs, no crashreporter. I have also found out that the same thing happens in System Profiler when I try to get a list of drives on either the ATA bus or the Firewire bus. Mind you they all show up on the desktop. Likewise I have had no luck getting them to list or run permissions or the like from the diskutil commandline. Now I am able to mount actual drives. When I swap out the offsite backup drive it mounts the new drive just fine. However... when I eject the drive and it has disappeared from the desktop and then I remove it... I get the removal error.. you didn't put the drive away properly message.
Now there are no disk related events showing up anywhere in the logs. The only other oddity that I can see is that my rsync backups tend to generate a ton of zombie processes. I get zombies of cron, sh, rsync, and mail.
It is just a pretty straightforward shell script
    /usr/local/bin/rsync -E --archive -eahfs --delete /Volumes/Files/Shared\ Items/ /Volumes/Backup\ Files/Shared\ Items/
Running in cron with it set to email the logs.
Now this does all clear up when I reboot the server... but it also doesn't reboot cleanly. It closes down all of the applications, login window and the like and then hangs on the shut down portion. Eventually I have to power it off manually. I've done the normal Volume checking on the main drives and they come up with 0 errors.
Hoping someone might have some ideas before I end up having to backup and reinstall the whole thing.

Also when I try to open the disk image file I get the following error in the log.
xserve kernel[0]: disk10s10: media is not present.

  • Disk image mounts as read only

I have a set of disk images that are mounting as read only. How can I change the permissions for these images? The image files themselves  have r/w permission, but when they get mounted, they are mounted as read only. The images are formatted as "Mac OS standard". I notice that Disk Utility now can only create images in Mac OS Extended. Is that the problem?

That obsolete volume format is no longer fully supported in Mavericks. You can read it, but you can't write to it.

  • Disk Image Mounter won't open an .iso file

I have a problem that neither Unarchiver  (though set up to open files with this extension) nor built-in DIM  aren't able to open the file I've downloaded. What the problem could cause this and is it possible to resolve it?
I'd gladly wait for your replies,
    thank you

Do you get any error messages?
Perhaps the disk image is damaged or is not a correctly formatted .iso? Redownloading should resolve any corruption (assuming the original is intact). Is this an image from the net or something you created?
Disk Utility (DU) will also mount disk images, so open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility drag the .iso to the lefthand sidebar & you can then select the option to mount and perform other tasks (like verify or repair where appropriate). Just right click the image in the sidebar to see more options (or ctrl+click).
See if that gives you any error messages.
'DU' will use the same framework as 'DIM' so it may give the same result, but you may get better feedback on error.
Be aware that large images can take a considerable amount of time to verify the filesystem before mounting and it's possible for that 'skip verify' dialog to be out of sight - it looks like nothing is happening when eventually it will mount

  • Disable disk image mounting + more

    Hey all,
I asked these questions over in the main leopard forum but they thought the Unixheads might have a bit more information on what I am looking for in this regards.
Basically I am running ~40 users on Leopard via LDAP with NFS mounted home directories. Ideally I would like any user outside of the local admin group to be unable to mount disk images and have any USB hotplug device mounted read only.
Thus far I have gone about unloading diskarbitrationd, which makes using any mountable device useless (DVD/CD, USB, DMG) for any user, as well as modifying ACL's to 774 on /System/Library/CoreServices/diskimagemounter.app and /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. This has resulted in crashing on trying to use the eject button in Finder or the Keyboard and the OS throwing various errors in regards to not finding child processes or background processes.
Moreover none of the above solutions is anywhere near ideal.
Somewhere OSX gets permissions and mount options for both USB drives, Disk Images and CD/DVD's. These options as shown by 'mount' are
    local, nodev, nosuid, noowners
CD's and Disk Images are also mounted with the read-only flag.
I realize much of the backend has changed in the Transition from Tiger/Leopard in this regard, much akin to the way udev has changed over the last few iterations of the linux kernel. However there should be some way to modify the base permissions and mount options for these sets of volumes.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers!

I haven't tried this, but setting the kernel security level to 2 may be the closest thing to what you want:
    <pre>sysctl -w kern.securelevel=2</pre>
You could run this command (as root, of course) in a launchd item at startup. Test thoroughly before deploying. You can find documentation about securelevels on FreeBSD pages, but I don't know whether they work the same way in Darwin. Once the securelevel has been raised, you can't lower it without rebooting.
You do realize, however, that this precaution, by itself, won't stop anyone with physical access from stealing data.

  • I have a disk image that fails to mount.

I made a back up of my entire Hard Drive just before I updated to mavericks. For reasons I wont' go into, the original hard drive is now completely bricked and replaced with random data. I still have the disk image, and it is on an external drive. BUT when I try to restore the image to a drive using  Disk Utility, and it scans it, the scan fails. I cannot upload the image as it is 196GB. Is there any way I can recover it as it is the only backup of all my data?
    Thanks in advance,

    • Restoring from a disk image - backing up to Disk Images or other Macs on your network - KB:
    http://help.bombich.com/kb/dmg-and-remote/restoring-from-a-disk-image
There may be some ideas, perhaps belated after the fact you already have a .dmg which may have issues built into it, and no original to go back to get another. And magnetically wiped hard disk drive with the magnetic platters totally toasted.
restore data from mac .dmg file:

  • Encrypted disk image mounting

I'm trying to find a way to make an AppleScript that will mount an encrypted disk image and enter the password for it automatically. I can make it open all right, but I can't figure out how to make it enter the password (the 'with password' command doesn't seem to work, I'm assuming it only works on remote volumes?).
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Something like this should work:
    <pre>
set myResult to display dialog "Enter password:" default answer "" with hidden answer
set thePW to text returned of myResult
    set cmd to "echo -n \"" & thePW & "\" | hdiutil attach /path/to/encrypted/disk/image.dmg -stdinpass"
    do shell script cmd
    </pre>
There are some security concerns with passing a command string to "do shell script" that contains your password. If other users log on to your machine they could see your password if they happened to be watching the process list at just the right time.

  • Encrypted disk image mount error

When I try to open one particular encrypted disk image, a Warning dialog box opens with the following message:
The disk image you are opening may be
damaged and could damage your system.
Are you sure you want to open this disk image?
If I answer yes, the image mounts and I can see at least the one file I tried.
I don't want to risk ruining the contents of the disk image, so I am not using
it anymore, and have run Disk Utility/First Aid on it.
By running this script while Disk Utility "Repairs Disk":
    { while [ 1 ]; do ps axlwww >> psout; sleep 1; done; }
I can see that Disk Utility runs:
    /sbin/fsck_hfs -y -f -g /dev/disk1s2
to check a mounted disk image. This works fine on a good encrypted disk image,
but Disk Utility shows these errors for the broken one:
A Warning dialog box opens with the following message:
    First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing "Safe" because the
    following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
and the first aid window shows:
    Verify and Repair disk "Safe"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid sibling link
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Any ideas how to fix this? I tried running
    /sbin/fsck_hfs -y -f -r /dev/disk1s2
from the terminal, but it complains:
    ** /dev/rdisk1s2
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
** Cannot repair volume when it is mounted with write access.
** The volume Safe could not be repaired.
and running it on the parent .dmg file doesn't work at all.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Well, I wish you luck, but haven't seen many people fix busted images.

  • Disk image mounts automatically

Since a couple of days I am experiencing a mysterious problem: a disk image  (.dmg) file keeps mounting automatically  under certain circumstances.
    This is what happens:
    - when I reboot my Mac
    or
    - whenever I choose 'Print' in an application and then select a print option or choose a printer from the printer popuplist
the image mounts and the windows displaying the contents shows in the Finder.
The image is a MacUpdate Promo image of 2009. It is read-only and it is stored on a network drive (a USB disk attached to the Airport Extreme). I can unmount the image, and the network drive, no problem. No files in use. But when I choose Print etc , it appears again!
Now, this image has been there for almost a year, and the problem started only two weeks ago, when I searched the disk for a piece of software (which I didn't find, so I never installed anything off the disk image).
    I'm running MacOSX 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro 15" (2010).
I am not aware of any preference setting that causes this. The .dmg file is not in the list of login items.
Anyone an idea what's causing this?
    HE

What happens if you rename the dmg?  Does anything complain after that?

  • Determining disk image mount point

Is there a command line util that I can use to determine the name of the disk image as mounted on the desktop? This question presumes the actual mount point name is not the same as the disk image name.

Parsing hdiutil info output seems to work here:
    hdiutil info | awk -F'/Volumes/' '/Apple_HFS/ {print $2}'

  • Disk Image Mounting

Hi, i am trying to open a disk image, yet when i try to open it, it shows the error -39. Can anyone help me with this?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
from this: The Macintosh was expecting a marker to show it where the end of the file is on the disk. That marker is either missing or is in the wrong place. A crash is the most common cause, however a disk error or corrupt file can also cause this.
    so, some options.
    - if you downloaded the disk image, try downloading it again.
    - use Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility to repair permissions and to verify your hard drive. if disk utility finds any disk errors, boot your machine off of your Tiger installation disk and run disk utility from the menu at the top of your screen.
post back if none of this helps... cheers
