10.4.6 Updated, Mac OS X Setup Assistant Launches?

Anyone know why the OS X Setup Assistant launched? It launched as an app, in an inset window, while the rest of the iMac ran as-normal.
It reminded me of how Classic runs on Macs that can still use it - an inset window holding the app.
After looking at the DL article and the KBase on 10.4.6, I see no mention of the OS X Setup Assistant launching. Any ideas?

I've seen a couple of other reports of this happening. Strange but harmless. I ran the combo update, and the only thing I've noticed so far is that I lost some custom system level icon changes I made. Oh, and some MSWord doc contents are now present in the Spotlight database.

  • Association of mac device after setup assistant?

I have a new Mac and used my time machine to get the old machine's data to the new one. Setup assistant seems to have added the new machine to the list of managed devices to my account, but it lists it only once, whereas, at this point, both my new and the old Mac is associated to my account. Which is a bit strange. How can I de-associate the old machine without creating problems on the new one? Or should I simply ignore the issue?

What happens when you try and boot to DVD? Does it boot at all? What do you see on startup? Do you get anything at all? What software update did you install? I've had them hang on me before, but powering down with the button did no harm.
Can you get into anything at all? Single user mode? Open Firmware? Not for tinkering, but just to try and work out exactly where the break point is. I've seen a Mac lose a hard drive mid Leopard install, and it produced some interesting results!

    Please help me...!
Yesterday, my friend gave me his old MacBook (Mac OS X Tiger)...
He said that he forgot his password and didn't know how to reset it...
Soon, I do the Setup Assistant with this :
    1. holding down Command + S.

    3. Remove current Netinfo Database:
    cd /private/var/db/netinfo
    mv local.nidb local.old
    4. Force Apple Setup to launch on next startup:
    rm ../.AppleSetupDone
    5. Don't forget to delete the home folders from every user on the system in /Users!

I'm so confused with this... so please help me....I need it so Bad...hhe...
    (Ehm...sorry for my BAD English..hhehe..)

Hi MemphisBELLE, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You've done about everything you can without The Install Disk, if your friend doesn't have that then call Apple with the Serial# handy, or seek an Apple Store/Provider.

The exact message would be helpful. I doubt this is it:
      uknown puplic ato
    Let's establish exact machine specs.
Here is how to find out what version of Mac OS you are running:
Click on the blue apple in the upper left hand of the screen.
    click on this icon
Click on the first line, "About This Mac"
Most of these are numbers & that's what we want.
What version & Processor do you have?
Get the Mac to set up  an additional administrative account.  You can then change the password on your old account.
Start with your computer power off.  Hold down command-s. Power on your computer.
    Type in the following:
The first two commands will depend on your release of Mac OS X.  Look at what is typed out in the console to determine the exact format.
    # Type the follow two instructions to access the startup disk in read/write. Press return after each command.
    # in case of partial success repeat this command until errors go away.
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /var/db
    pwd
#List all files. The l is a lower case L.
    ls -a
#The move command acts as a rename command in this format.
    mv -i  .applesetupdone .applesetupdone.old
    # reboot  your mac
    shutdown -r now
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!

  • HP Photosmart D7560 set up failure - HP Setup Assistant - Mac OS 10.5.8

Ever since installing the Mac OS 10.5.8 combo update on my 2007 iMac 24", the HP Photosmart D7560 printer stopped working.
Downloading the latest driver software from HP ("HPInstaller_PSD7500v9.8.dmg") and running it seems to install software, but when HP Setup Assistant launches and tries to "set up" the printer with the new software, it first doesn't show the printer icon in the Select Device pane of the HP Setup Assistant window.
After checking the "My device is not listed" box, an icon for the printer appears. Then, after clicking the Continue button, the following message is displayed: "If your device is not listed, it is not supported by this installer. Please visit www.hp.com/support to download an installer, if one is available. If you do not have internet access, ..."
This printer worked fine with Mac OS 10.5.7.
    Can anyone suggest a solution?

  • Setup Assistant loops after iTunes 7.5 & QuickTime 7.3 software update

    Hi,
I have installed Leopard a few days ago and had no problem at all.
But a few minutes ago, I just completed a software update (including iTunes 7.5 and Quicktime 7.3) on my Mac Book 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Since the mandatory restart, Leopard loops through the following:
    1. Logging screen appears. (I enter my username / password)
    2. Leopard's installation setup assistant launches. No button from the menu bar works.
    3. When I finish the setup assistant, goes back to step 1.
    Any idea?!?

  • Stuck in "Mac OS X 10.5 Setup Assistant"

    Hi there
Subject: Stuck in 'Mac OS X Setup Assistant'
I am stuck in "Mac OS X Setup Assistant" After rebooting following software upgrade, the Setup Assistant appears unexpectedly each time Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard starts up, and continues to appear even after completing all pages in the assistant,
I followed the steps advised by Joseph Kriz on 09 February 2008, in the enclosed webpage and achieved safe boot.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306998
However the window denoting safe boot has only login in button. No back button, no restart button. No other buttons, even after I pressed power button quickly, a few times.
    I am stuck.

This may be an issue with the pde plugins. PDE stands for print dialog extension and are included with vendor drivers to provide access to printer features not supported by the core printing system. If you are using a Power PC driver (or sharing it from the G4 to the MacTel) then that may be a possible cause. See if HP offers a Universal Binary driver for your model.

  • Help ! Going crazy : stuck with leopard Setup Assistant

I've installed and used Leopard since its launch.
Experienced some minor problems : iCal stopped when trying to open a Task... Bin could not empty on securized mode.
Today, after the same problem, I had to force to reboot and now it's running to Mac OS X Setup Assistant again and again, as if it never got it.
    What can I do ?
    Thanks for your help.

I don't know if it's the first rule of website design, but people forget their passwords all the time. If you really want people to use your services, Microsoft, you should remove this ridiculous loop from your system.
The most commong problem in all these cases is the following:
A user signed up for Skype account "john.doe456" a few years ago using an email address [email protected]
Later the user linked their Microsoft account [email protected] to the Skype account
Now it's March 2015 and they try to reset their Skype account password and request a password reset using the [email protected] email.
Users will always be forwarded to the Microsoft account password recovery. To reset the Skype account password you need to request the password recovery to the [email protected] registered email address of the Skype account. Many users have forgotten what their Skype account registered email was because they haven't updated them for long. In this case you need to contact Skype CS and get your primary account email changed. The starting point for this process is to fill out the form for "I don't know my registered email address" here:

  • All account settings lost - can't get past Setup Assistant

    Dear all -
I just rebooted my computer (because an iDisk transfer froze Finder again...) and now all my user data appears to be gone. I can still login, but after that I get the Mac OS X Setup Assistant... After I re-enter all that crap, the login screen pops up again, and I can start all over again, and again, and again...
    Something is clearly wrong here.
I haven't set up any other accounts, so I think I am hosed.
The computer is only three months old, so I am covered by warranty, but it is still annoying.
Does anyone out here know if there is a way out of this mode w/o a full re-install?
    Regards,
    Erwin

    "Applebob for president"
Just tried the applebob solution, but was worried with no joy after 100 revs of the progress wheel I get the jet engine fan of **** that many of us enjoyed when we had our early leopard upgrades. After a long while the fans stop and the HD starts to run it's boot up chugging and I get the safe startup dialogue.
I could not understand what he means by 'hit back' so logging in gets me the same setup assistant scenario, quitting that goes back to the login screen and i select the restart option which drops me into the blue screen where i get a software update feature running as Applebob mentions
To confirm my own problem for those searching to cure a similar incident. I was installing last nights apple quicktime upgrade which went fine on a g4 powermac and al-book I initially cancelled the upgrade on the g5 at the login phase to go back to review the reasons for the quicktime upgrade then went ahead to upgrade. Upon typing my login details was given an immediate restart option.. although i doubted the wisdom of doing so i did it and when it rebooted i had the perpetual setup assistant syndrome as others mention. Clearly the applebob solution fixed the botched quicktime update.

  • I did "Repair Disk" on OS 9 drive. Now I get the OS X Setup Assistant when I try to restart from it. How do I bypass it so I can restart from OS9?

I run OS 10.6.8 on the main drive of a Mac Pro. On a separate drive, I run OS 9, so I can use Protools LE 7.3.1, an older version.
Using Disk Utility, I recently did a Repair Disk routine on the OS 9 drive. There was nothing wrong with the disk, I was just trying to do some maintenance on it.
But now, when I try to re-start from the OS9 drive, I get the Mac OS X Setup Assistant. The old files all seem to be still present on that drive.
So how do I bypass the OS X Setup Assistant, and get it to boot up from OS 9?
    Thanks!
    Bruce

Thanks Gary, Neville, and Jeff! I really appreciate the help.
    Jeff said the magic words:
How were you running Mac OS 9 — with SheepShaver?
Suddenly I realized--and this is embarrassing--that I was NOT running OS 9 on that drive, it was just an earlier version of OS X.
What happened is that after I did that repair disk routine, I lost all my prefs on this drive, and so when I re-launched into it, it looked totally different than it used to look. You see, years ago, my Protools app wouldn't work in the then-current OS. And it seemed so long ago, that yesterday, I assumed that OS 9 must have been involved.
    Thanks again!

  • Cannot Finalise HP Setup Assistant after Time Capsule Restore

    Hi all,
I recently had to install a new hard drive on my iMac.
I restored my system using Time Capsule.
I had to re-install my HP software for my LaserJet all-in-one as it would no longer scan.
Un-installed the software then downloaded and re-installed the 10.6 Full Solution from HP website.
HP Setup Assistant launches, detects my printer etc.
But when it gets to the last screen where it is asking me to confirm all my settings, I click Continue and it just hangs. I have to Quit HP Setup App.
I can print fine and scan, however, I can no longer scan using the ADF. It is greyed out in the software.
My feeling is it is because I have not run the HP Setup App correctly.
    My question is:
Is there any kind of hidden HP files I can delete in Finder that may be corrupting and preventing the HP Setup App from working?
    Thanks.

I will try a Clean Install, this should resolve issue.

  • After SL Install - Added HP 5100 blank HP setup assistant screen

The install went fine. On reboot, the HP Setup assistant launches. The first page is a welcome. I click the next button and it instructs to select the HP device. Well, there are no devices listed.
How do I complete the setup and make the setup assistant go away on reboot.

Hmmm, the HP Setup Assistant is launching. Did you perhaps install the old HP software? Print driver support is already included In-OS. As for the easiest way to stop Setup Assistant from running, go into the System Preferences, open up accounts, and under your user select Login Items. Select the HP Setup Assistant and press the minus "-" button.
If its not there (which there is a good chance it won't be with the older LaserJet software, go to:
    /Library/Preferences/Hewlett-Packard Preferences/
    And delete the file com.hp.setupassistant.
Now don't re-install the old software and you should be good as gold.
    Just trying to help.

  • Razer Kayboard/Mouse and Mac Mini first Setup/Boot

    G'day Apple Support Communities,
I'm purchasing a new MacMini in a few weeks. I'm wondering whether the new mac can detect/setup the mac compatible Razer kayboards and mouses upon first boot/setup. As I understand, a new mac will go through various steps, to select language and timezone. But when it needs to pair kayboards and mouses, will it detect the Razer gaming keyboards/mouses.
    Kayboard: Razer BlackWidow Ultimate
    http://au.razerzone.com/gaming-keyboards/mechanical/razer-blackwidow-ultimate/
    Mouse: Razer DeathAdder
    http://au.razerzone.com/razer-deathadder/
Both peripherals claim to be Mac Compatible
    Ta, flakefrost

    hey!
any mac can detect any usb mouse or keyboard, but depending on the company and the peripheral it's full functionality can be impaired or completely absent. for example the blackwidow ultimate keyboard has specific function keys for mac os x (mission control/expose) and a built-in macro automatization system which cannot be used without the driver for the keyboard. so the point is that you need the drivers :-)
i have a razer blackwidow ultimate mac edition and a razer mamba 2012.
the correct installation is as follows:
    1.) go to razerzone.com
    2.) move mouse over support
3.) klick on drivers, software, manuals
    4.) find your product
    5.) download mac drivers
    6.) install drivers
    7.) plug in devices
you have to restart after each individual driver installation and you should plug in the device after both drivers are installed, not before or during installation.
last but not least the mac drivers are only compatible with mac os 10.5-10.6, mac os 10.7 lion is not compatible with the drivers. i found out the hard way through freezing of the computer and kernel panics. after a clean install of lion and the drivers, i had a kernel panic the second time i turned it on after the clean installation. @ Razer: where are the updates??!! :-(
