10.4.7 and monitor failure after boot up

10.4.7 again. I have some strange experience with my core duo mini, after installing the 10.4.7 update. After the boot procedure I get a blank grey screen with some flashing in every seconds on my Xerox LCD display. It looks like the monitor is on "energy save" mode or something like that because this flashing is abnormal. So at this stage i cannot do anything, except push the "power on" button of my mini to get it sleep. After the "wake up" the monitor works perfectly.
I got te same error when my system put my monitor into "energy save" mode after some inactive minutes. For this problem i can switch off this energy saving, but for the problem during the process i have no idea.
Anyone have the same, or have some guess about the solution?
Mac Mini Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Both. Don't forget to reboot afterwards so the system can generate new files.

  • Monitor failure on boot

I have OSX Leopard fully updated and XP Professional fully updated on MacBook Pro and it keeps overheating and monitor is not working? Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any boot proceedings I can use to get screenback. It's clearly not damaged, there is a software issue somewhere.

    Welcome to Apple discussions!
While your Mac may seem old to you, Macs last a long time. Your Mac is not a bona fide Older Mac.
Most readers in this "Older Hardware Products" forum are using Desktop and Tower Macs that were produced before the turn of the century. iMacs have their own forums, too.
The forums in the link below are visited by users of MacBooks, who are much more likely to be able to offer you accurate advice on a problem like yours. I suggest you choose a specific forum (you don't get a "post new topic" button until you select an individual forum, not the composite one first shown) create e new topic there, then cut and paste your query from above. Adding the processor speed of your Mac is very helpful on homing in on exactly which model it is.

  • Lost wallpaer and dock icon after boot

Sometimes during boot a fray bar appears, like when I update EFI and after boot I have lost wallpaer and dock icon.
In that case I have to reboot and during boot the gray bar does not appear and I get my wallpaper back but the dock is empty.

    Hi
Did you remove the preferences folder or the preferences within that folder from /Users/Home/Library? If you have not then perhaps something has happened to your drive/directory that seems to have affected only that part of your system - unlikely but possible. Do you have a backup?
I don't know how SuperDuper works having never used it but can you recreate your backup sets from the backups themselves?

  • AMD/ATI fglrx and 3d, only after booting first into windows

I have a x1600pro agp and I can only get 3d acceleration to work if I first boot into windows. Every time after i turn off my PC, i first have to boot into windows or 3d wont work. It also happened with a 9600xt agp card.
I'm wondering if it has happened to somebody else, and if it is because they are agp cards?
It happens connecting with the vga or the dvi outputs of the cards.
Is there a way around this? It gets really annoying having to boot first into windows.
I also think many people having trouble getting they're 3d to work is because of this.

I congratulate you for making the connection between Windows and 3D functionality in your Linux installation. That's the hardest part to figure out. Loss of hair can result wondering why 3D comes and goes without any apparent reason. However, once you know the secret, the behavior is 100% consistent. I rarely notice it because I rarely turn off the PC in question, and once the correct settings are locked-in by a single boot to Windows, 3D acceleration in your Linux distros will remain through any number of reboots. The only thing that requires a repeat of the Windows touch-n-go is when you power-off.

  • Fresh Install and no modules after boot [SOLVED]

    Hi,
Been with this problem for quite a while. I'm piss€d off
(Sorry about my english.. I'm Portuguese...)
    I've installed this release
    Current Release: 2013.01.04
    Included Kernel: 3.6.11
As i stop using Arch on a daily basis, i decide to install it again on my laptop. (I'm still using slackware, though)
I followed the wiki procedures and when i reboot i've got no modules loaded.
    The reason:
uname -a give me 3.2.29 and the modules installed are 3.7.4.1.
I don't know what to do more. I've done 2 fresh installs and the results are the same.
I've upgraded with pacman -Syu, i've done:
    pacman -S udev
    pacman -S mkinitcpio
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -S linux
    once or twice and... nothing.
something is missing and i don't know what. I'm out of ideas.
    Thx for the help,

  • OID and DCM failure after loading patch 2703110 and 2682125

    Hello,
When I install the following in the order specified on Windows 2000 Professional:
    1) Oracle 9iAS 9.0.2.0.1
    2) Oracle Patch 2703110 (9.0.2.2)
    3) Patch 2682126 (OID Patch) - Installed before the
last step in Patch 2703110 (dcmctl calls).
    I get the following condition.
    1) "dcmctl UpdateConfig" returns ADMN 202026
    2) I cannot log into OID (ldap bind error - invalid credentials). ldapbind -p 4021 works, but not if I specify -D "cn=orcladmin" -w welcome1 (or ias_admin passwd). Note that during this process, I changed the password manually to "welcome1" in the ODS->DS_ATTRSTORE
table. Note also that during patch 2682125, when I ran
the oidpatchca.bat, I received the following errors (
    before I changed the orclsupasswd)
"Couldn't find ldaputls.sql" and at the very end,
    "invalid orcladmin password"
    Any help with this? Thanks!

I got the same errors when running the oidpatchca.bat script, i.e. cannot find the ldaputls.sql script (probably harmless?) and cannot connect to orcladmin.
It is not possible anymore to connect with the OID Admin tool (from the startmenu) to the LDAP.
However, the update of the databaseschema seems to be finished correctly, and I can run the dcmctl UpdateConfig commands for patch 2703110. Also EM Website can see the Farm again, and other mistier installations see the Farm as well.

  • Mac Pro Display flicker & failure to boot

Hello people who are smarter than me.
I have a 2008 Mac Pro 3.2/ 8CX 8800GT with the original Geforce video card installed.  When I turn the machine on I get a grey screen with a black bar at the top, with no evidence of an actual boot (such as a darker grey apple in the middle of the screen.
After a minute or so, the screen retains the form of the black and white horizontal bar at the top but adds a rapidly cycling/strobing organge red and yellow flicker reminiscent of the old Monty Python crazy title screens....  It looks like this if you blink fast enough... or take a still photo.
I live in Haiti, where a fair amount of dust is constantly invading my tower, so I've had dust related issues before with memory... THis time, I don't think it's that.  I've cleaned out the tower with pressurized air, reseated the memory and reseated the video card as well, to no advantage.  The problem first came when the computer was working fine and while my daughter was opening a page on Firefox the screen just started jittering with this little color show.  At the time, though, you could still see the desktop behind all the flickering.  Now the computer doesn't seem to even boot.  If I have to fly to the states to fix this, I'd love to not have to haul the whole machine, so if we can get this down to a couple likely parts that I could travel with, test and replace, that would be great.  This is a hardware issue, right? Would video card failure make sense of this AND the failure to boot?  AND if I do replace it, is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit still the ticket?  If you help me, you'll be helping a lot of Haitians too, as I use this computer for humanitarian work with the Apparent Project.  Help me Obi Geeks, you're my only hope!

Okay, so after doing all of the above, the computer still takes between 40 seconds and 1 minute or so to boot up, and the VersionCue messages still appear. However I discovered that the "kdcmond cannot retrieve..." messages disappeared after I disabled my ethernet connections. So at least I know that that had nothing to do with the extended boot-up time.
I have heard that the more RAM you have, the longer it takes to boot due to the RAM count. Since I have 10 GB, maybe this is why?
I've included the most recent Console messages below:

  • New Retina MacBook Pro does not find WiFi after booting

My Retina MacBook Pro keeps looking for WiFis after it has booted, but does not find any.
I have to explicitly turn WiFi off and on again after booting to get it working.
When I put the MacBook to sleep and wake it, the problem does not occur.
Any hints what could be the problem?

Not sure if this will help, but you can go into System Preferences > Network and, if you haven't already, create a new location (mine is called "home"), then from this location remove all connection methods from the left column except Wi-Fi. Also, click on "Advanced" and remove anything from the Preferred Networks list that you aren't using. Then click on "OK" and "Apply".

  • Make daemons start after boot?

Can I make daemons start after the boot has ended? Netcfg uses about 10 seconds connecting to my wireless network, and the mounting of my windows share (trough fstab, using cifs) takes even longer. Therefore, I'd like to know if there's a way to start netcfg as a daemon and/or also mount my share after I've gotten into Arch and/or X after boot?
Can I use something like .xinitrc for this?
    Last edited by Bennythen00b (2010-12-18 23:30:04)

I tried that, but my windows share won't mount then for some reason. :-/
E: To be a little more specific, I backgrounded "net-profiles" and "network". I assume this doesn't work because whatever executes fstab tries to mount the share and fails before the network has finished connecting, or are daemons queued in the background too?
Anyway, just having "network" backgrounded works rather well, and I only have to wait for my wifi to connect. Not a huge problem, but I'd prefer having it start in the background in some way.

  • HP Pavilion dv6500 strange fan noise after boot up

    Hi everyone,
I've got problem...when I boot up, I can hear strange noise which comes out from the laptop fan. It sounds like a loud buzz or something like that and appears only after boot up and lasts approximately for 2 minutes, then disappears.
I've already tried to clean the fan with air compressed can, but with no luck. Then I completely disassembled the laptop, unscrewed the fan and heat sink from the motherboard, cleaned it  and replaced the thermal grease on the CPU and GPU. Despite of that, the noise appears again.
I know that this model is five years old, but if there is any other option than replacing the whole fan with new one, I'll really appreciate it. Thanks for your advices.
    HP Pavilion dv6500 (dv6680ec)
    Ubuntu 11.04 32bit / Windows 7 32bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 (1,5GHz)
    GeForce 8400M GS
    2GB RAM
    160GB HDD
    15,4'' Screen

    What should you do?
Whatever you want, I personally sold the laptop for 700€ and bought the cheapest new Asus 15” dual core laptop I could get for 300€ and you know what... it s working great for a year and a half now and most important ... QUIET so much that I didn’t hear it even once for now even when watching HD movies or doing a 3D games, and I really mean it NO SOUND AT ALL! …
Happy forever, but it was a great lesion for me with HP Pavilion "quality" products.
P.S. One another thing, build quality is even much better at laptop for 300€ not to mention the Pavilion for 700€ where all the so called chrome decorations almost fallen off,the DVD tray or slot had strange alignment to the whole laptop (little bit cranny) and so on…. Bottom line it’s too much fragile.
HP is for me forgotten story, period.
    Have a nice day.

    Hi,
    should be no problem.
Best case is you can activate online via Internet.
Worst case is you have to call Microsoft and explain that it is the same computer after a mainboard failure.

I get the grey apple and the spinning progress wheel for 30 seconds, then the screen stays grey and the apple is replaced by what looks like a circle with a diagonal bar through it. I believe this means something along the lines of 'No Bootable Directory Found'.
Before the 10.5.2 update this happened almost every restart. I'm using a Samsung Spinpoint 750gig drive as my boot drive, and the stock 500gig drive as a media disk.
I have tried several solutions. Repair permissions, Disk Utility from CD and run verify and repair disk, AHT extensive, TechTool Deluxe with surface scan, Format and Reinstall (twice), Memtest, NVRam.
Could the Samsung drive be bad even though I can't get any software to find a fault?

Here is a console log of the most recent failure to boot. The events here are a restart, a failure to boot, a forced off and a power on. Hopefully this helps.

  • [SOLVED] systemd-udevd using 100% CPU and monitors go to sleep on boot

    Hi,
Turned my PC on this morning to find an issue with the monitors going to sleep immediately after booting. The boot process is usually slim autologin to a cinnamon session. I can see as far as entering my LUKS passphrase, followed by a few additional lines, followed by blank monitors and monitors entering power saving mode.
Booting with nomodeset on the kernel command line allows me to boot to a terminal and I can login etc, but obviously X doesn't start. I'm using xf86-video-ati drivers.
When booting with KMS enabled I also have a runaway systemd-udevd process which is thrashing my processor and I'm unable to kill it (I've tried kill -9 and still it persists).
The PC was working fine when I shut it down last night. No updates have been performed since, and no configuration changes have been made. I did notice that the power management dialog in the settings failed to open though.
Any suggestions would be welcome please, as I've now lost half a day trying to get this resolved.
    TIA
    X.
Edit: I've also tried downgrading xserver to 1.15, xf86-video-ati and the associated dependencies with no change.
Edit2: I've also disabled slim and rebooted and the same thing happens - so I don't believe it's an issue with X but with KMS.
Edit3: Booting with acpi=off on the kernel command line also fails with the same result.

Turned out to be an issue with libdrm. Apparently I had run some updates yesterday before shutting down, but they didn't appear in pacman.log; instead I found them by looking in the pacman package cache and found:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 110072 Jul 29 22:59 lib32-libdrm-2.4.56-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 160996 Jul 29 22:55 libdrm-2.4.56-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Downgraded [lib32-]libdrm packages to 2.4.54-1, rebooted, and success.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's because the Boot Camp volume was created, but your Mac hasn't been set up to start automatically from the Windows disc. Insert the Windows DVD and press C key while your Mac is starting to start Windows installation.
If you want to make sure that everything is correct, open Boot Camp Assistant and choose the option to remove Windows 7. Then, open that application again, select the option to install Windows 7 and you will be able to install Windows as usual
