10.4.7, Intel iMacs & MS Word

Good morning.
At Berkley we have just migrated to a G5 Xserve with Tiger server and upgraded all our workstations.
The workstations are running Tiger 10.4.7 and are a mix of Intel iMacs, Mac books, eMacs and iBooks.
Among the applications is MS Office 2004 for Mac with service packs up to 10.2.4, and I’ve applied 10.2.5 to one of the Intel iMacs.
When the Intel iMacs are running MS Word, it unexpectedly quits just after a job is sent to a printer. It does not matter which printer, and it only happens on the Intel iMacs. The MacBooks and the Power PC machines are not affected. The iMacs have 512MB of RAM and are fine otherwise. Disk permission repairs do not make any difference, neither has the 10.2.5 service pack.
I’d appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

I'm confused about the update service pack. Office 2004 should be 11.2. I assume that's what you meant.
Was Office 2004 Test Drive uninstalled before installing the full version of Office. It is well known that installing the full version without uninstalling the Test Version will cause problems.
I'm also wondering if 512meg is enough ram to run it smoothly and not cause problems. Office has to run unde Rosetta on intel macs which may use more system resources. I run it on a mac mini with 1gig ram and hadn't had any problems with it. Also prints fine on several printers over my LAN.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • What would you do with Intel iMacs with WM97/Thus-T in Word ?

In a school in Marin County there are 20 Intel iMacs running 10.4.11 (512 MB RAM) all networked and running fine.  Several students reported a Macro warning notice when launching a Word (Mac 2004 Student edition) document (.doc).    Have looked over the current available anti-viral programs running under 10.4.11 and submitted several files to three different websites which analyze the file against 20 or more virus detectors.  Most sites and local apps found the WM97/Thus-T virus in all the offending files.   The only free application which cured the files, rather than quarantining them or deleting them, and ran with 10.4.11 was Sophos.   Sampled only one of the iMacs with a full Sophos scan of the User folder, and it found 47  "WM97/Thus-T" infected files, and cured all of them.  Repeat scan of Home folder ----> no threats found.   Some of these infected Word files go back three years, and the machines are running fine.
The students are not supposed to bring files from home, nor are they supposed to take files home.  There are a few PC towers and PC laptops on site, all with anti-viral software. The students do not currently e-mail this files nor receive e-mailed files.  For fun, I tried e-mailing one of the infected files to myself, and aol and gmail both blocked the transmission.
QUESTION:   What would you now do ?  It doesn't seem this WM97/Thus-T is a threat to Macs.  Would you feel compelled or it's mandatory to run Sophos on all the Macs on site ?
What about liability ?   If one of these infected Word files found its way on a Windows PC would the school be liable ?   What is the worst case scenario of this virus on the Mac platform ?    On the Windows platform ?

Thank you for your time and help.

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:
    For Tiger:  http://www.clamxav.com/download.php#tiger
and for Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion from here:  http://www.clamxav.com/

  • Upgrade Graphics card for 2007 24in Intel iMac...any word yet?

Hello, I remember talking about upgrading my 128mb graphics card on my 2007 24 inch Intel iMac a while back. people said it was possible, but now that two years have passed almost, have they come out with new cards that fit this machine? what is the best to use and where do I get one?
Is it easy enough for me to do myself or should I have it installed professionally?
    Thanks!

Unfortunately not these machines were not intended to have graphic card upgrades therefore no graphics card upgrade is available for your iMac.
If you want an upgradeable machine the next time your purchase I would recommend looking at the Mac Pro which is designed with upgradability in mind, including memory, hard drives, and yes graphics cards.

  • Intel iMac keeps freezing, lagging and shutting down.

My iMac has for the past week or so repeatedly frozen, sometimes leading to it showing a blue screen forcing me to shut it down.
When I then try to turn it back on, it doesn't load. However, a Safe Boot and HD restore fixes the problem temporarily. The computer works ok, with a bit of a lag sometimes. But as soon as I open too many apps, or sometimes just for no real reason at all, it just freezes and stays that way. This means I can't really use my computer for much else other than ubrowsing the web. Programs such as Word or Photoshop mostly just freezes the computer up.
I've never had this problem before at all. What could the prolem be? Is it a hardware problem? I'm unsure what to do, and I really don't want to turn in my computer anytime soon.
    Thanks, William.

It is really hard to say if the hard drive, or hard drive interface is faulty without swapping in another hard drive. Since the Intel imac is not made for user access, I would ask a service technician to diagnose your error. If your data is not backed up, try a recovery using tools on my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
if none of them see anything, ask if the technician can try to just remove the hard drive, if there is still some non-backed up data on it, so you can get a chance to put it in a Firewire SATA hard drive case to see if it can see any data that way.

  • 17" Intel iMac

I am getting a new 17" intel iMac next week. I am switching from an iMac G5 due to fan noise. I understand these machines are much quiter than the G5's. Could anyone who has used both machines share their experiences in this area?

    Chris
Moved from a G5 20" to and C2D 20". Seamless, effortless are the words I'd use. I had intermittent fan noise on the G5 and could always fix it by re-seating the RAM. Not a peep out of the Intel, out of the box to now has been perfect. (10 weeks now).

  • No stock of Intel iMac in UK till mid Feb!!!!

Apple told me today there is no stock of the Intel iMac until 8th February! None in the country at all!
Bummer!!!! Still waiting for mine! Ordered on Jan 24th!

Ordered mine on 26th Jan from the online store after a very disappointing trip to the Apple retail store in Manchester!!! (Staff couldn't answer queries, RAM not in stock etc etc).
It was shipped 31st Jan. Apples online order tracking has still not been updated. Still no word except an estimated delivery date of 10th Feb. A little disappointed so far.
Hope you all manage to get one soon.

  • Intel imac and dv bridge

My new intel imac with ilife 6 will not "read" the hollywood dazzle bridge i have attached to a vcr. It worked with ilife 4 but now i get a message that it will not control the camera. That was always the case, and I manually would hit play, but nothing comes in.
Any suggestions? I can't afford to purchase more equipement. If this is incompatible, does any have an inexpensive alternative? I am just copying family movies from video to dvd.

I found something which works with cameras, but I don't know if it'd work with your analogue-to-digital bridge - but try it!
Open an existing project, connect your Dazzle, press Play on the VCR, now play an existing video clip within that project, then slide the iMovie Scissors/Camera (Edit or Import) slider to Camera and click on Import.
Playing an existing clip sometimes "kickstarts" (..how many times have I used that word?..) the system into accepting more input, whatever the source..

  • DVD made on old imac unreadable on new intel imac

I've seen some discussions about issues like this but none that have a solution. I had an imac a couple years ago and transferred all my home movies to dvd using imovie (4 or 5?) and idvd. They play fine on my television.
I now have an intel imac and would like to use it to make ISO files of the dvd's so I can stream them to my tv using a mediagate server. My understanding is that I load the dvd, open disk utility and use it to make the iso file. I have tried six of my dvd's and every one is rejected after DU tries for a few minutes, accompanied by an error "Unable to create XXX.drc input/output error." Some of that wording may be slightly off, but it's close.
Is there some setting I have failed to properly set? I can play the dvd's in dvd player so they seem to still be good. But I can't copy them.
    Thanks for your help.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.
An ISO file is basically [in my understanding] a diskimage.
[xxx.iso]. Since you created these DVDs yourself, they are not protected, so you don't need to rip them. You can simply open TOAST, take your DVD, copy the 2 folders on the DVD to the desktop, drag the folders [AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS] into TOAST [set to 'data', 'ISO 9660' 'select','new CD'] and then choose 'save as disk-image'. Naming is quite restrictive: 8 uppercase letters and/or numbers only.
This will give you an iso-file; a diskimage of the original DVD.
Hope this is what you were after !

  • Should I Updrade to the Intel iMac?

My dad is thinking about upgrading to an Intel iMac. All he'll use it for is word processing and e-mail. From those that have one, how good are they? Any problems? Also, my dad did all his writing in Appleworks 6. Is That installed on the Intel iMac?

Actually, AppleWorks isn't a universal binary, and although it runs okay for me, it's awaful slow. Instead of purchasing it for $79, you could just get iWork '06 for $20 more. Pages, although the interface is different from AppleWorks's, is a good word processor, and doesn't take too long to get used to.
Or, as an alternative, you could use TextEdit. Not really.....

  • Intel iMac/Pro Book compatible Audio Interfaces?

Does anyone know if there are immediate plans for major audio interface manufacturers (MOTU, Edirol, M-Audio) to release drivers compatible with the new Intel Macs? Until that happens, no switch for me. I'm happy with my current machines, though, even though my iMac is now used to show how much speedier the Intel models are!
    12 iBook (G4 1.33); 20" iMac G5 (2.1)   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

The American National Association of Music Merchants annual winter convention is January 19 through 22nd in Anaheim, California.
All of the major audio interface manufacturers will present their wares at this convention.
If they have not made announcements already, it is my guess that each company will announce their plans for Intel on Mac support by the end of this convention.
Non-Apple computer software developers will probably make similar announcements.
    Watch http://www.harmony-central.com for press releases.
(I check Harmony Central each day to see what is new in the musical instrument and audio hardware fields).
My advice is this: the Mac on Intel iMac and MacBook Pro systems are going to start shipping over the next two months. Apple has announced that GarageBand 3 is already Intel-native, and that Logic will be Intel-native by the end of March (no word on Logic Express).
If you buy a new Intel on Mac system right now, it is a safe bet that some audio programs and audio hardware won't work natively right now.
But within a few months, every company should update their products.
Watch Harmony Central.com and read up on the news.

  • Slow Intel Imac...

I just bought an Intel Imac, after crashing my Powerbook G4 10.20.8 ( did not like earl grey tea!)
I choose to boot up the new machine from the back-up of my laptop on my external hard drive - That could be where the big boubou lies....-
So while I am enjoying my retrieved files and my previous settings, the Imac is performing very very slowly. Applications are spooling, hanging, slow to open, slower to close. It takes for ever to log off and on. I am really not enjoying working on it, darnit!
What are my options? Should I consider a clean install, and so how?
    Thanks for the help!

This is more and more common with people switching from PPC machines to intel machines and mass migrating settings, apps, start-up items and the rest. It could be any number of things.
Restart that intel machine on a stand-alone basis (meaning sans peripherals unneccessary to its functioning - or in other words, your keyboard, mouse, ethernet and power only). Play around for a bit doing your normal stuff, then open your activity monitor and let us know what's what in your active processes.
As is often the case, you might have migrated something over that is sucking the life out of your system resources. The only applications that come with the install disk of the intel machine are universal. Anything you migrated over from your laptop is PPC. For all I know, you might be running all the standard apps (Safari, iTunes, etc.) as PPCs instead of those built for your intel machine.

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for my intel imac?  **** thing dumped, less than 3 years old.

This is my first mac and the **** hard drive crashed in only 2+ years and of course the waranty is expired.  Can I replace the hard drive with any 3.5" replacement or do I need something special.  And if I do where can I get it?  I didn't see anything specifically for an intel imac at apple store.  I don't want to pay apple to install it, already spent enough money on this disappointing purchase.

any 3.5" Sata drive will do.  I recommend http://www.macsales.com/, or http://www.newegg.com/

  • How do I use my Intel iMac to see the screen on my old G5

The screen on my old G5 is fading fast and I would like to connect it to my newer Intel iMac and use it's screen to be able to see what i'm doing. Is there a way to do that?

Fortunately I was just able to make out the Screen Sharing check box on my older Mac. As soon as I checked it and opened the file on the newer Mac there was the screen. Perfect. Thanks so much.

  • Emagic mt4 and intel iMac does not work with 10.4.5

    Hi there,
after updating my iMac on 10.4.5 my MT4 does not work any longer. It is still shown in the system profiler! But that`s it! After I`ve installed the latest driver (emagic v1.7), it was not shown in the audio/midi preferences. On my G4 with 10.3.9 it is still working properly. I have tried to use it with Garage Band 3, while I am waiting for Logic Pro 7.2 . It worked in the begining, but now the USB connection on the MT4 does not light up, but the midi devices. My question is: Do I need a driver using Logic Pro 7.2 with an Intel iMac? Includes the update the driver for Emagic MT4?
thanks a lot for any reply, experiences and clues
