10.4.7 Intel update on PowerPC

Yesterday morning when I saw my updater window, the 10.4.7 update said intel in parenthesis. At the time I did not think much of it (sort of like with the iPod updates, one update for many models), so I accepted, but... what happens if updater pushed the wrong update! Is there a specific update for Intel and another one for PowerPC? If so, has my machine crashed because they pushed down the Intel version on my PowerPC mac?
WHen the update was downloaded, the system said it could not expand the package and my PowerPC would not boot at all. It was fried! Would not respond to any keyboard keys on boot.
MHunter suggested I disconnect the drives to force a DVD boot, and it worked!
I had really bad luck with 10.4.7! ANyone has any suggestions of what could have happened?
WOW!!!

Your profile says you're running 10.3.6, so if that's true, you couldn't have installed any 10.4 update. So I'll assume that it should say 10.4.6.
It's possible (albeit remotely) that Software Update could have shown you the wrong update, but it would not install on your system regardless, although it's conceivable that an attempt to install the package could have caused your system to crash.
If you Mac is back in working order, your best course of action at this point is to wait for at least 2 weeks before you install any system update; there's no reason you need to rush out and be among the first to do it, especially if you have no backup of your working system. And when the time comes to install the update, go to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads site and download the 10.4.7 PowerPC update from there onto your Desktop, then install it.

  • The update "Mac OS X update combined (powerpc)" can't be installed?

I recently upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 to Tiger (10.4.6) and encountered a weird problem. My system is a Dual 1GHz G4 (mirror drive door) with 768 MB RAM.
When I try to launch iTunes, I get an error telling me that "iTunes requires Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later..."
That never happened before, so I assume that the Tiger installation (or a Software Update I was unaware of) sabotaged iTunes by imposing this new requirement.
Now here's the irony: I can't install OS X 10.4.7! When I run Software Update, it tries to install Mac OS X Update Combined (PowerPC) 10.4.10-- but it fails every time with the message:
The update "Mac OS X update combined (powerpc)" can't be installed.
The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by "Apple."
So this seems to be a transmission error, or something wrong with Apple's server. I've tried this repeatedly over the last few days, but nothing changes.
Any suggestions? I tried downloading the installer from Apple's download page, but it results in the same error. Is there perhaps a clean version of 10.4.8 I can download from somewhere?
It's really frustrating not being able to run iTunes because of an OS "upgrade."

Then, stop using Software Update, click the Downloads link at the page's top, and manually download the COMBO update. As for iTunes, apparently you installed a later version. With 10.4.6, your quite a few updates behind: OS, security, iTunes, and QuickTime, just to name a few. Before you update, be sure you make a bootable backup/clone. • IMac won't boot after OSX  Intel update crash - Newbie needs help please!

    Hi,
at the weekend I updated OSX on my IMac 17 with an Intel update. An error message said that the update could not be installed and that the update was sent to the trash - a restart was requested. Since that shutdown my Mac chimes and gets stuck at the white load screen (hard drive is quiet).
    I've tried the following:
Holding Shift key upon boot to initiate Safe Mode - No Joy!
Apple+S to run disk utlity/console - cannot initiate to cmd prompt!
Just as a little background - I'm a recent Apple convert and typical Windows defector. I've seen the light after many years in M**soft environments (I even trained to MCSE) but my Mac OS knowledge is considerably lacking. Let's be honest - so far I haven't had any problems.
Any gentle help would be most appreciated folks - I'm not sure where to start and I want my baby back!
    Many thanks.

Same here. I have an iMac 20". It has been upgraded to Leopard and running fine since I purchased it 2 weeks ago. I downloaded the latest OS/X update (100+MB in size) but the installation failed. The system requested a reboot but it has not been able to ever since. It simply keeps beeping with a white screen. I put the Leopard DVD in, held the "C" key, but nothing works. Now I have a system that won't work. From now on, I will shy away from getting the latest update .... I am planning to take it to the apple store

  • Computer won't start-up after installing Intel update :( :( :(

I have no idea what's wrong, but I had an Intel update installed and when I rebooted my machine it wouldn't get past the Apple logo (and hasn't each of the 10+ times I've tried). In fact, when I leave it on the Apple logo at start-up, it attempts a full reboot after about 10 minutes, then proceeds to get stuck in the exact same place. What is going on?!?

Again, you will get better help if you start a new thread. Unlike the OP, you can get into single-user mode. Also unlike the OP, you are running Leopard rather than Tiger. I'd suggest posting your own thread in the Leopard forums.
Very quickly, though, you should rerun fsck/Disk Utility repair until you get a message saying that "The volume <whatever> appears to be OK". If you cannot repair that way, you have to choose between trying a third-party application like DiskWarrior and reinstalling the OS.

  • Opening folders after latest Intel update

Tell me... has anyone come across this problem? I just downloaded the latest intel update, and now I can only open my folders by right clicking. I've already made sure the user file wasn't corrupt. Yet, everything else works just fine when I double click. This is driving me crazy. Someone, please help.

Re-apply combo updater for various issues. At the risk of playing like a broken record, we cannot overstate the value of re-applying the Mac OS X combination updater as a solvent for various issues apparent after using the standard, delta (adjacent version-to-version) updater to migrate to Mac OS X 10.4.9. The delta updater is automatically used by Software Update if your current system iteration is 10.4.8. Re-applying the combo updater overwrites potentially problem-causing files that were not replaced by the delta update. Download link is as follows:

  • Is it feasible/cost effective to upgrade my G5, 2 GHz Dual PowerPC processors,  2 GB DDR SDRAM to an Intel system? There are no updates for PowerPC systems any longer.

Is it feasible/cost effective to upgrade my current MAC G5, dual 2GHz powerPC, 2GB DDR SDRAM, running OS 10.4.1.1 to an Intel board & processor(s)?  Power PC G5 no longer has updates available.  Things such as the newest version of Flash require an intel system.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.
    ssbrown

Well you can upgrade your 10.4.11 G5 to 10.5.8.  But you lose Classic, and don't gain any Boot Camp capability.    Only Intel Macs have Boot Camp, and still no Classic.  You also have be mindful, if you buy too new, you won't have Rosetta capability which allows PowerPC applications to run on Intel Macs that were designed for Mac OS X.   Macs that ship with 10.7 or newer have no PowerPC support for applications or drivers.  See this user tip:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295

  • Java on Intel Updates

    Hi,
Are there any updates for Java 5 on the Intel platform? I have a MacBook Pro and it has Java 5. I attempted to download Java 2 SE 5.0 Release 3 but it looks to only be for PowerPC. Is Release 3 available for Intel?
    thanks scott.

Intel Mac OS X ships with Java 5, probably equivalent to Release 3. It's based on JRE 1.5.0_05 as far as I remember. Java 1.4.2 is still a default JRE.
Release 4 is in the works, Developer Preview 6 is currently available via ADC. It's based on 1.5.0_06 and works fine for me. Recent DP's of Release 4 make Java 5 the default JRE.
Apparently this TN hasn't been yet updated for Intel Macs:

  • Why are Intel updates always fat binaries

I don't understand. Why are all the updates for Intel based Macs fat binaries? Is there a reason that they're not Intel only binaries? Possibly Rosetta needs the PPC versions? If not it seems like such a of waste bandwidth and hard drive space.
    Chris

Possibly Rosetta needs the PPC versions?
Just guessing, but that sounds about right. For example, some Safari plugins (e.g. Shockwave) are still PowerPC only - Safari won't pick this up unless it's run in Rosetta mode.

  • [SOLVED] xf86-video-intel update to 2.99.912-1 breaks video rendering

After a full system update today video  playback in X windows (both hardware-accelerated and not) breaks horribly. Playing back videos causes tearing, black areas of the screen and then a hard lock-up.
Looking back through the updated packages and testing one-by-one reveals the immediate culprit to be the update to xf86-video-intel from 2.99.911-2 to 2.99.912-1. Rolling back just this package restores everything to working order (including hardware-accelerated video).
    Other hopefully relevant installed packages:

With either version of xf86-video-intel installed my desktop environment loads successfully, and works normally, up to the point where any video playback is attempted.

I had the same issue and downgrading to 2.99.911 fixed it.
Could you file a bug report for the package to disable the Tear-Free option again?
    Thanks!
    [Edit]
I took a look at the package files and couldn't see anything related to "Tear-Free". Would you mind to tell me what you meant?

This seems related. However, I don't feel like patching and building the driver. I guess I just wait for 913 and complain again if it's still broken then.

  • Computer will not boot up after OS 10.4(intel) update

I received a pop-up today that indicated updates required for iTunes, Quicktime and the OS. I believe the iTunes and Quicktime proceeded with no problem. The OS update (which had Intel in parenthesis) was a huge download and after a long period of time I received a message that download failed, file moved to trash. Also received prompt to Cancel or Restart. I selected restart. The computer never rebooted it is perpetually displaying the apple symbol in the center of the white screen with a cursor indicating loading. I shut the power down manually several times but to no avail. Is there some kind of key to hold down to go into safe mode?

OK, I used my MAC OS X install disk to get to the Disk Utilities. I ran verify disk check and repaired a minor "Volume Header" issue. This did not solve anything. I can choose to restart by the Install disk or the installed 10.4.11 OS both fail to start. Is it necessary to re-install OS X?

  • 10.4.9 Intel update killed my Airport connection

Had the EXACT same problem with 10.4.8, so I eventually reverted back to 10.4.7. Once 10.4.9 came out, I thought I'd be safe, but after the update, my Airport connection constantly drops, sometimes several times a day, for no apparent reason. After it drops, the network is not visible and only a restart will return the connection.
    1. Firmware is up to date
    2. All security updates are in place
    3. Hard reset on AE fixed the problem for a couple of days, but no longer
    4. I have a 17" Intel iMac, Time Warner cable modem
    5. When the connection drops, AE light is still steady green
Called Apple support and the phone guy started in on my cordless phones providing interference. I knew that was going to go nowhere since five seconds before I installed 10.4.9, I had ZERO problems. It ain't my phones. I would just go to a wired setup, but I rely desperately on AE to stream my music. Any advice? I've trolled the forums for hours, but haven't found a solution...

After multiple calls to AppleCare, determined it was cordless phone interference (2.4Ghz). No idea why this interference doesn't exist prior to 10.4.8, but whatever. Got a new 6.0 DECT phone today and so far, no dropouts. $70 I wish I didn't have to spend...

  • 10.4.11 Combo Intel Update Failures

I'm reinstalling original 10.4.6 software on my mac book and am trying to update. The 10.4.11 combo pack seems to be corrupted in some way. Getting messaages that the package has been tampered with or that the checksum is not verifiable. Any way of finding a clean combo update or do I have to do updates of 4.7, 4.8, 4.9....?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.

  • 10.4.7 Intel Update Problems (Apperntly different that the others)

I tried to run the update from Software Update and it didn't work.
After downloading everything it gave me an Error Message saying:
    Error Reading Package
There was an error while evaluating JavaScript for the package
So I tried the Combo as some peole suggested in other threads, and it gave me the same error. I gave Disc Utility a try ad it said it needed some repairs, but the repair button was grayed-out.
So I restarted the Mac and now I can't launch Safari and Preview is also giving me an Error saying:
You cannot use the application "Preview" with this version of Mac OS X.
I checked for the version of Mac OS X at "About This Mac"
and it only says my serial number. The version number and the build number of the OS are gone.
    How can i fix this?
iMac (Intel CoreDuo) Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Did you re-run the Combo Updater? If so then it's likely that something got corrupted either before you did the original update or during it. Some things you might try:
Drag the following files to the trash:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (a folder in /System/Library/Caches)
    Extensions.kextcache (a file in /System/Library)
    Extensions.mkext (a file in /System/Library/)
    com.apple.ATS (a folder in /Library/Caches/)
    com.apple.loginwindow.plist (a file in /Library/Preferences/)
Files that start with com.apple.LaunchServices (in /Library/Caches)
You may be prompted to enter your administrator password when dragging these files to the trash. You should restart afterwards.
If you still have the problem download the shareware utility TinkerTool System and use it to clear all user and system caches, font caches, old log archives, etc. Restart afterwards.
If you still have a problem try one of the following at a time:
    1. Boot into Safe Mode (restart and after the chime press and hold down the SHIFT key until the startup screen appears with the dark gray Apple logo. Release the key as soon as the spinning gear appears.)
    2. Create a new user account. Log into that account.
If the problem ceases with one or the other let us know which solved the problem.
Failing all of the above I'd say your best recourse is an Archive and Install. This does not require erasing the hard drive but you will need sufficient space for installing a fresh copy of OS X.
