10.4.7 update ate my MacBook.  Any suggestions?

I just tried to install the 10.4.7 update via "Software Update" and:
1) The update failed (it reported an "unknown error" and put the installer in the trash).
2) The system became unstable after that, in particular the Finder and Firefox wouldn't respond.
3) After a hard reboot, the system won't start.
I've run Disk Utility from the install DVD and repaired permissions (two were repaired) and verified the disk (no errors) and specified it as the startup volume (just in case). From the intall DVD's Terminal.app I can go in and see my files.
I've tried several times, with both hard and soft restarts, and it's always the same: I get the grey Apple, I get the spinning spokes, it stays like that indefinitely (max 20 minutes or so thus far before I gave up).
So, I'm pretty confident there is nothing wrong with the hardware, and my files look safe, but it does appear that the 10.4.7 update is going to cost me the rest of the evening.
Any hot tips or suggestions?
My obvious next step is to reinstall the software, which of course is a giant pain, not least because of the fifty terabytes of system updates issued in the last two months. So I'll try just about anything else...
I have another Mac I can use to get at it (perhaps via Firewire) but the second one is a PowerBook. Also, I can get into the terminal fine from the install DVD.
The only unusual thing I can think of as a contributing factor is that I was copying some large files from a DVD while the update was downloading, and it may have gotten confused trying to install itself while the Finder was busy.
Anyway, here's hoping some kind expert will give me the secret inside tip. 'Cause today it feels just like when I use Windows at work...
(Oh, and yes I realize that the obvious obvious tip is to do a full system backup before installing a system update, what can I say, I was lulled into a false sense of security.)

Well, since I have to either get this working or give it to Applecare tomorrow, I decided to try to reinstall. Ouch.
However, in Googling around since then it sounds like there might be some hope for applying the update in "Target Disk Mode" which, IIRC, is with your Mac tethered to another Mac via Firewire. But I imagine they both have to be Intel Macs, which leaves me high and dry anyway.
But if you have another Intel Mac handy, it might be worth a try.
Meanwhile I noticed another thread from someone who had a very similar problem with 10.4.6:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2069439#2069439
Looks like the same problem I had; didn't look like he got anywhere with it.
Also, another thread had this link which was useful knowledge in retrospect:
http://www.macfixit.com/
...to which I would now add, "do a FULL backup to an external drive, using SuperDuper or something like it, before even looking at a system update."
Which is funny, because giving advice like that is exactly what makes my non-Mac-using friends sneer.
Oh, and re: contacting an Apple employee... I agree but this is, um, the Apple company support forum, so I'm sure someone in Cupertino will read it ASAP and escalate or ignore the problem as they see fit.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Its 9/10 and I still haven't received the update... Any suggestions VZW?

Hold on tight it'll come i got mine accouple days ago. An when it Does some things to remember before you except
    it.
    Do this:
Make sure you run the battery down an then Recharge it fully before doing the update.
Its a good idea to be close to the Tower so you can get the best signal while doing the update process
let the update go fully thru its steps it will take from 20 to 30 min. an no incoming or outgoing calls can be made an at the end of the update for about 2 to 3 min. it will look like its doing nothing but it is just leave it alone an finally it will be done an will be then at the home screen.
i would then shut it off wait about 5 min an then turn it back on. the boot up process will be alittle faster.
And my final suggestion is enjoy your new Incredble thats what i call mine.   B33

my ipad froze during update. cant turn off. any suggestions?

If you're sure that the update isn't still happening then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • HT1338 i cant update my MAC OS X 10.5.8 to a new version. (Im trying to update my itunes software) any suggestions

i cant update my MAC OS X 10.5.8 to a new version. (Im trying to update my itunes software) any suggestions

HI, sadly 10.5.8 doesn't support the newest iTunes.
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It's been pulled from the online store & Apple Stores, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.

  • Software Updates not working. Any suggestions why?

I am trying to get the updates that show up on Software Update but when they start to run the crash out right at the beginning of the download. I am on 10.4 with a G5. Any suggestions. I am inclined to think this is an Apple problem and not my computer problem. I am on DSL too.
    Thanks,
    Rob

So far we know the following is true:
    1. Permissions repaired
    2. Different account tried
    3. Peripherals are non-relevant
This says the issue is at the system level. System level issues which can affect Software Update include:
    1. Bad cache files
    2. Bad directory
    3. Firewalls
    4. routing issues to the Software Update server (i just checked that Software Update server is indeed working, and I was able to see I have an update waiting for me).
    5. Wrong disks used for system installation. Occasionally I've seen this happen that people use another Mac's installer disks to install an operating system and not the retail installer disks or the disks which came with the Mac, and an Apple application misbehaves.
Cache file corruption and directory failure can most frequently happen if your hard disk is nearly full. They can also happen, if you force shut down/restart the computer from the power button. Do you think either of these applies?

Apple update fails continuously.  I have followed the onscreen insturctions, and when it finishes, it is unable to update. It tells me to restart, have done so, nothing.  I have restarted apple tv, and nothing.  Suggestions?????

  • When I click on my mail button it does not update my email. Any suggestions on how to fix. This

My email does not update when I click on it. How do I fix this

Quit the mail app then reset your iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.
Also, when looking at the list of your emails that have already been delivered tap and pull down on that list then let go. This asked the Mail app to check again.

  • Help in updating a website..any suggestions anyone???

    Hey,
I am trying to update a page on my website and it won't allow me to. I have the Dreamweaver software interacting with the FTP server, etc. What is going on wrong? Please respond as soon as possible.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your response, but I am still getting this blank white page with links on them...why is that?
Go to the website....www.wayofrealdiscoveryinc.org and you will see my problem. Also, click on the link that says "2009 website" and that is the true website...
Thanks and I hope to can help me solve this problem.
What you see there is what normally happens when a) you browse to a folder for which there is no default file found by the server, and b) the host for the website has left 'directory browsing' enabled so that you are seeing a directory listing of the files on the server.
Obviously, this is a bad thing in most cases.  The solutions are -
    1.  Ask your host to disable directory browsing
    2.  Create a file with a default filename and upload it to that folder (ask your host what the default filenames are)
How long have you had this domain with this host?
