10.4.7 Update - Causes FREEZE on restart

After updating my G5 PowerMac with 10.4.7 it froze during the mando restart. I figured something happened and thought nothing of it.
I came over to my parents yesterday - got 10.4.7 on their iMac (intel) and it did the same thing. It sat on a blank gray screen for about 30 minutes. I finally just held down the power button.
Any reason for this?
  Mac OS X (10.4.7)   I Love Macs!

Hi, Nick.
1. It's not clear from your post if restarting got you past the problem. Are both Mac's still having problems or is this an "out of curiosity" question?
2. If there's still a problem, I'd start with the following:2.1. It's possible there is a now-incompatible Startup or Login Item on affected computers. See my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ for steps that might help you with this problem.
2.2. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.3. Before installing software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
Good luck!

  • Windows recognizes iPod, but not iTunes or iPod updater, causes freezing

I'm having some issues with my 60GB iPod Photo. I tried to store my friend's music on my iPod as files. Upon uploading them to my own computer, some files caused freezing, requiring me to disconnect and reconnect the iPod. I finally gave up and deleted all the files stored on my iPod. All of a sudden, although Windows XP Pro recognized that an iPod was plugged in, it would no longer open iTunes automatically. When opening iTunes once the iPod was plugged in, it would cause iTunes to freeze.
I decided to restore my iPod. About halfway through, there was an error message saying my iPod could not be restored. All songs were deleted but my iPod was still not recognized. Now, the iPod updater does not recognize that in iPod is connected, even though Windows does. The updater freezes, inhibiting me from completing my restore. iTunes freezes as well when my iPod is plugged in. My iPod displays "update in progress - do not disconnect," but nothing happens. When my iPod is not connected to the computer, I can navigate through it normally, although it does need to be unfrozen when left unused for a couple of days. I cannot tell if it plays files because they were all removed during my unsuccessful restore.
I have tried reinstalling all my iPod related software and I have tried my iPod on more than one computer with different USB cables, but nothing works.
    Help, please!

This is exactly the same problem that I am having I have posted on 14th March on itunes forum. I wish you luck I wait with interest to see what someone says. My ipod was working like a dream until i downloaded the update

  • After installing Leapord updates - computer freezing on restart.

just installed Leapord and everything was running great. Went to update all my software which downloaded & installed correctly. After restart I got a message about needing to restart to clear the cache which I did. Upon doing that, start up appears to freeze at the white startup screen with the apple logo. After a while my fans rev up like crazy and have been for like 15 minutes.
Does anyone know if it is going through some crazy processing to dump he cache or is there a way I should be able to work around this and get to my desktop again. Please let me know what additional information is needed to solve this and thank you in advance for the help

It also seems that I cannot open the CD tray and my attempts to start up in safe mode have so far been in vain. Not really sure how to get to a point where I can do anything productive as I can't seem to access much of anything at this point.

  • On Leopard after running software update computer freezes during restart

    Hi All,
I hope I am posting this in the right place. I have installed Leopard (brand new installation with formating the HD before install). It went lovely. Migrate all of my accounts and settings form my other HD. BTW that other HD was upgraded to Leopard they the upgrade feature of Leopard instal and had the same problem that I'm going to describe here. After installation was complete, I worked on my computer just fine for a few hours, restarted it a few time an it worked great. I've installed software updates (iTunes 7.5 QT7.3 etc...) at this point when my system requested a restart and I click "restart" button, the computer tried to restart and froze at the point when the screen went black but the tower never restarted. In fact after about a minute of system being frozen, all of the fans in the tower went blowing full force.
Now, here is the history. I've done the Leopard upgrade on my system HD a week before this happened and after downloading this software update had the same problem. Can not restart at all. The computer works fine for about 1 day and after that the system starts to slow down a lot.
I called Apple, they didn't know what that was. Went to Apple store, they check the hardware and... It's good. Was advised to reinstall the Leopard on "clean" HD with brand new installation rather then update. I did all this yesterday on my 2nd HD and as I've said above, it worked just fine until I've installed this update.
So, my question to you all. Did anyone else experienced this type of problem?
I'm still on hold wanting for Apple tech support to try and resolve this with them. I was just hoping that some of you may know this and may have a fix/advise for me.
Thank you in advance for your help

  • 10.6.4 Update causes freeze at Desktop

After running the 10.6.4 update via Software Update on my early Intel Mac desktop, I cannot access the Finder on restarting. The cursor moves as expected, but nothing is accessible-in essence the Mac is frozen.
I've booted Single User, run fdisk (twice) and still have the same problem on rebooting. I'm now booting the Snow Lep install DVD with an eye to restoring 10.6.3 from Time Machine. Anyone else?

Ah ha! I noticed my Time Machine backup drive, a NewrTech Guardian Maximus FW 800 drive, didn't show up in Disk Utility when booted off the Snow Lep DVD. My boot volume checked out as error-free.
Simply shutting down and resetting the FW chain regained me the Desktop and the use of my two FW 800 devices. Phew!

  • Software Update caused freezing, Finder, and HD problems...

My weekly software update ran yesterday and it came back with a handful of updates so I clicked ok to install them and several required the system restart...as it was in the shutting down phase of restart it stalled on a screen that said updates installing and it did nothing... I left it for well over 3 hours and still nothing so I forced quit by holding in the power button...when I then restarted everything is super slow to respond and many applications don't work at all i.e. finder, mac HD, I can't select force quit...just a whole array of things not working correctly...when I try to go to the Apple menu and select restart or shut down nothing happens... I need help -I am not very Mac fluent.
    thanks,

Hi! I'm having the same problems! Updated to 10.6.3 noticed that after the restart I got crash reports that the dock experienced bad access and restarted over and over again+the desktop pictures were changing like **** every second.
opened up Disc Utility and did HDD fix and repared permissions, the HDD no problems but loads of permissions issues. Ran it several times and then rebooted and started with the install CD and redid the Disc Util. and did another restart. It worked for a little while but soon again, quicklook crashes, and finder crashes, and I cannot start any apps at all, not even the terminal, nothing. I can open up the HDD and look around and throw stuff in the trash bin, but nothing more.
I've tried to throw away tiff, jpegs, movies, aiff, mp3, avi:s that were on the desktop, or in the dock. I have trashed several plists, preferences, pref-panes (plugins as perian etc) but nothing helps. Free disc space is 13.5 %.
I am writing this on my work computer mac book pro 2,53 GHz, 4GB and 10.6.3 no problems, but my own computer was originally a 10.5 system and then upgraded to SL.
Help me please! I cannot access any prefs, programs, apps or anything that requires starting up of anything. Starting up in safe mode does not do anything, still cannot start apps!
    Help!
    PLZ!

  • Latest Apple Update causes Eclipse to freeze on startup.

I've been using Eclipse for development now for the past four or five months on my Macbook Air.  However, when I ran apple updates this afternoon, and restarted, Eclipse began freezing every time I went to load it.  This is a pain in the ***, and software updates should never break working software.
This machine is primarily a development machine and I'm extremely hesitent to keep using it as such if it can't be updated without risk of wrecking my environment.
Perhaps it's possible it updated to a newer jvm version, but I'm still perplexed why this would cause an application to completely not load.  I am able to run other java programs fine from the command line.

Very annoying that this can't be done as part of the update process?

  • Macbook freezing when restarting to update

I'm trying to update my 2010 Macbook Pro to the newest OS + itunes versions, but it freezes when restarting (it's showing the space screen indefinitely). Anyone has a solution, I can try? Many thanks

Forgot to mention that when it is connected to the internet it will work for a few minutes and then crash. I checked this with safari, chrome and firefox and all 3 crashed after a few minutes.

Doubt it is a Hardware issue...
If the Reset and the Restart have not Resolved the Issue...
Then the Next Step is a Restore...
    Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

  • BUG: Renaming a file causes Finder to restart - after Update 2008-008

BUG: Renaming a file causes Finder to restart. This started occurring after installation of the Security Update 2008-008. I can't rename files or folders.
Is there a solution? A workaround? A software update? I repaired permissions but that didn't help.

Here's an excerpt of the crash dump referenced in the Console utility application.
    Crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Finder.crash.log
The first few lines shows that LockRenameUnicode is called when renaming the file, then the Finder crashes. What is causing this crash in Finder in Mac OS X 10.4.11 after installing the Security Update 2008-008?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Leopard Freezes on Restart

I'm having a Leopard installation problem I haven't seen discussed, so here goes.
Installation appears to go as it should (taking about an hour).
I get a screen saying installation was successful and a count-down to restart.
    I click restart.
GRAY screen with Apple appears, and the little circular animated icon goes around and around for a minute or so.
    Then freezes.
A two hour wait with a frozen animation produces nothing new.
I've forced a restart with the same result, several times.
Restart while holding down "c" DID get me back to the Leopard install screen, but a second attempted install failed in the same way.
I've seen a suggestion to try "archive and install". I've NOT tried that yet. Will try now and report results.
Since this is not a Blue Screen, I don't think this is the same problem others have had. I do not have Application Enhancer installed on this machine (at least not where other posts have expected it to be.)
If anyone has a fix to this I'd appreciate it. If I find one for myself I'll of course post that here as well.
This is on a MacBook Pro 15 inch, purchased new in August. 2G ram. Plenty of disk space free.
    Sigh.
    Charles

Thanks very much to chat2ian and Nicolas those were helpful responses.
Here is what seems to have solved my problem:
Force a shutdown from the frozen restart screen by holding down the power button.
Power back up while holding down the letter "c" to force boot from the cd/dvd drive.
Chose the option to "archive and install", rather than the default "update".
After a (lengthy) installation, the installer says it is done and ready to restart.
    Click restart.
Hold breath, cross fingers, appeal to appropriate godesses.
After about 30 seconds of gray screen, solid blue screen with cursor appears.
(Think: Great-- progress is a blue screen of death. But wait!)
After a frightening pause, a color wheel appears, and hope returns!
Leopard starts, configuration help runs, and (in my case a least) 5 more packages are ultimately updated, followed by another restart.
This is also a bit of tense drama, but runs about as usual (perhaps a shade slower than Tiger.)
So far, all files and software are present, and life begins to look worth living again.
Nicolas: Sorry I didn't see your reply until after I'd started the "archive and install" run, so didn't get to see if Command-V would show me the same stopping point that you got.
chat2ian: I was within another try of adopting your approach and reverting to Tiger. I started this "simple" update at 9.45 and it is now 20.37.
The irony is I bought the MacBook Pro in August because I wasn't willing to go through another MS upgrade to Vista. I honestly thought this would go smoothly the first time. Silly me.
Thank you both for trying to help.

  • Windows Media Player keeping Automatic Maintenance window/Windows Updates from doing auto-restart

I have a system that is connected to a domain, and it runs a video playlist in Windows Media Player for digital signage upon bootup (and auto-login).  WMP is set to loop the videos over and over again, but it also is preventing automatic updates from
installing and/or auto-restarting at 3:00AM in the morning (and yes, the system power management is set to keep the computer on all the time).
    How can I fix this?
I have a GPO set up to install updates and restart automatically (option 4).  I tried the GPO option to use the Windows 8 maintenance window to install updates, and also tried turning that option off and just using a 3:00AM restart period.  Neither
option seems to work, so it looks like Windows Media Player is preventing an auto-restart to finish the update installation.  Is there any way around this, so that Windows Media Player doesn't stop Windows Updates from doing its job?  I don't care
if that means the video stops playing because it just starts up again on the next bootup.
I looked at the WMP GPO's and the only option that sounds like it's related is the option to turn on or off the auto-updating of media info for WMP, but it has nothing to do with what I'm trying to accomplish.  If I missed something, let me know.
If there is some other way to accomplish this, such as associating and launching the playlist file with the Xbox Videos app, I would be fine with that, but I need it to loop the playlist continually (I also use the Shuffle option
in WMP - ***see note below for another question).  I still want the system to automatically install updates and reboot on a regular schedule despite the video playing in the foreground.
***Side question: is there any way to turn Repeat and Shuffle options on in WMP without having to load the GUI (for scripting a playlist)?
Just FYI: this system is actually using Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise (from a MAPS account), but it isn't customized aside from not having the standard WinRT apps from a stock Win 8.1 install loaded - it is a stock install from the ISO.
From what I understand, it is the same as Windows 8.1 Enterprise, except that it is only licensed to be used as an "appliance" machine for a single role - which it is.  So I'm assuming that there are no actual differences from a "regular"
Windows 8.1 SKU that would cause this issue.  If I am completely mistaken about this, please notify me on it.  The reason I'm making this statement is in case there are any differences in Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise that I am not aware of.
Otherwise, I welcome any assistance that would target a "regular" version of 8.1 Enterprise.  NOTE:  Someone said to post this into the Windows Embedded forum, but the only one that exists is the one for POSready - and this is HARDLY the
POSready version of Windows Embedded that I'm using.

    Hi,
Did you use the policy Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Always automatically restart at the scheduled time?
I noticed an description "restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations" policy is enabled, then this policy has no effect." it means if system installed some updates which unneeds restart computer, this policy would has no effect.
In my opinion, your problem should not caused by WMP setting. please check your installed updates whether they need restart computer.
In addition, Power Managment in Control Panel also can prevent the schedule task running.
    Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Change advanced power settings\Sleep\Allow wake timers
Please make sure this option is enable.
