10.4.7 update disabled AirPort

I used Software Update to upgrade my iBook to 10.4.7. When I logged in, there was a pop-up that stated that /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAirPort2.kext was installed improperly.
I used Disk Utility to repair permissions on the disk and then restarted. After the restart, AirPort was once again enabled.

Highly recommend you download the 10.4.7 Combo Updater (PPC) and reinstall the update. Only this time do the following:
1. Repair the hard drive as well as permissions. You will need to boot from your Tiger DVD in order to repair the hard drive.
2. Disconnect any peripherals except original keyboard and mouse.
3. Restart into safe mode.
4. Reinstall the combo updater and restart normally.

  • Itunes 7.0 or Quicktime 7.1.3 update disabled airport connection??

I just ran the automatic update which installed Itunes 7.0 and Quicktime 7.1.3
Afterward my airport connection could not get an ip address. (It had the self assigned 169.254.x.x address) The airport was not actually disabled, It was still connected, but could not access the internet via the airport. Ethernet was unaffected. We have another computer which had not been updated and it still connected via airport no problem.
Then, after about an hour of searching the discussions for an answer, just as I was writing this, the problem resolved itself.
    Very strange.

I try and download QuickTime stand alone, but it only is a package with Itunes,
it is available as a standalone. there are two different versions of the installer on the download page. take a closer look at the area of the page immediately below the "Download the Free Player" heading (to the left of the page):

  • Software Update disabled Airport network

Today I downladed 2 security updates, iTunes 7, and the latest Quicktime.
Upon restart, my Airport Extreme basestation appears to have vanished.
My network shows up under my airport network, but I can't go online.
And, when I open my Airport Set-Up Assistant to reconfigure an existing Airport Extreme Base Station, nothing shows up.
Finally, my Internet Connect Application never opens. I just get the spinning pizza wheel and have to force quit.
Any suggestions? It seems like every time I download an update I get a devastating and time consuming issue. I'm getting pretty tired of it.

All well and good, but I had the same experience,
    ... I installed ... via Software Update, ...
as soon as the installation finished
(before the restart), my laptop stopped seeing the
wireless network. (The reported power went from
    pegged to zero.)
And I've never used a keychain.
    (1) Sorry for barging into an existing thread, rather than starting a new one.
    (2) After I poked around on this forum for awhile, I was reminded by multiple posts that I should have tried repairing permissions. After I found my Mac OS X disk, I tried it, and - ta-da! - my Airport card is working again.
The moral (obvious to the old hands here, I'm sure, but not to the rest of us) is to repair permissions if anything funny happens.

  • AirPort Extreme Update 2008-003 disables airport

After working perfectly since I received my Macbook Pro on Friday, I was notified yesterday there was a Software Update called "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-003". Not thinking twice, I installed it while I was at work, then when I went home and rebooted, I could no longer turn on my airport (just the spinning beach ball). Then in network preferences when trying to turn airport on, it freezes up the system. I then have to force quit and force the machine to power off by holding down the power button. The only way I have been able to get airport to come back on is by creating a new location in network preferences called "Home". If it gets switched back to "Automatic" I can no longer turn Airport on anymore. Also, even though I can turn it on using the new location, I am no longer able to connect to the wifi network at work at all, and it fails to see as many wireless networks in our building as it did before.
I realize now after reading at several blogs online that this update was almost immediately pulled and is no longer available. Is there any way to undo or revert back to a previous state before this update or do I have to wait for a fix. Or, if necessary, should I use the DVD that came with my system to totally do a system restore of my machine?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base station and time capsule items showing in airport utility as a network.  when able to "forget" them they initially drop off but soon return. how do i get them deleted and stay that way

since latest update to airport extreme im getting 10 unknown base stations and time caps showing up as though they are a part of my network. sometimes i can "forget" them and they will disappear initially but soon return. i need and want only my connection inside my home . any ideas. i have done a factory reset and set up a new network but they continue to show up.

I'm not convinced that the problem lies in Airport Utility. This same thing was happening to me, nearly exactly as you describe it. The thing is that with me, the problems clearly started when I updated the firmware in my Airport Express (n). That's when all the wacky stuff started happening. Sometimes it would show up in AU, sometimes it didn't and even if it didn't, I could still access the internet through it.
But as you said, the problems got really bad when another Express (b/g) was put on the network with it. Even when it did work, the (b/g) would make it impossibly slow.
You know more about this than me, and clearly have more patience if you've restarted the network fifty times. I gave up at about ten.
In any case, your solution is more of a work around and if you're still having that slow connection problem, I'm not sure you've got it. But thanks for your reporting of this. At least I know I'm not crazy.

After the Airport update today, Airport Utility 6.0 no longer sees my new Extreme or my 2 new Airport Express relay stations (same network); however, my internet is working and all Airports are green?  I'm running Lion on my iMac and updated when Airport Utility prompted me to do so a few hours ago.  After applying the updates is when Airport Utility stopped seeing my routers.  But they are working?  Thoughts?

Did you remember to completely power cycle the entire network?
You would want to do this after any update or change to the network.
If you did not do this yet......things are out of sequence.
Power off everything on the network.....all devices.....power down order is not important
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Work your way out on the network starting each device about a minute apart
    Check the network

thank you thank you for taking an interest. this is so frustrating.
i only have apple keyboard, mighty mouse, and 20 inch cinema display connected. this morning took out memory and tried to boot up with individual pairs in the first bank. first the (2)256, the (2) 1g, and then the other (2) 1g modules. everytime I get the weird fuzzy wheel under the logo after a while, black screen flashes, then grey apple logo fuzzy screen then black forever.
I ran tiger updates this morn. still will only boot to safe mode. then tried to run leopard disk to install it
will not boot from leopard disk.
tried safe boot, then doulble click install leopard, restart, then the saga repeats with the pixely red square around the wheel.
these are fresh drives with only what came on instll disk loaded.
thanks again for taking an interest.
i love this system(well at least i did). I want to install leopard on my powerbook too but am terrified to do so right now since it is working and I have work to do. Can't afford to have no computer to do my work on...self employment is great?!
This is making me crazy. I anxiously await your words of wisdom.

  • After a firmware update to airport express should I unplug the unit then plug it back in? (bascially reboot it)

After a firmware update to airport express should I unplug the unit wait a bit and plug it back in?  (basically a reboot)

I updated the firmware on the 2nd of this month.  Everything was fine.  About a week later internet speed began to be slow.  I rebooted the modem and the speed was okay for awhile, then slow again. I'm wondering if it's the airport express.  It didn't tell me to reboot at the end of the installation.

  • How to disable airport so that standard users can't reenable it ?

Even when I disable airport interface from the command line :
sudo ifconfig en1 down (what requires sudo privileges)
a standard user can reenable it ! Strange behaviour compared to linux or windows OS.
If someone knows how to block airport, please let me know.
    Thanks

    Hello,
    Thank you for the answers.
    All users are standard users.
The option I was searching for is in System Preferences - Network - AirPort - Advanced - Require admin password for : Disabling or enabling AirPort. The other two options could be useful too.
I think I'll add this to my base image. In the meantime I'll try to apply the settings via Apple Remote
I didn't find the exact settings to enable the 3 options from the command line, if you know how to do this please tell me.
I found a few very useful commands though :
Disable/Enable airport from the command line
    networksetup -setairportpower en1 off/on
That's the command I will use when all machines will be configured with "Require admin password for : Disabling or enabling AirPort". If it's not configured the user can reenable airport.
Disable/Enable airport service from the command line :
    networksetup -setnetworkserviceenabled AirPort off/on
That's the command that can help when you haven't block the users yet. A standard user can reenable the service but he needs to know the command as well as how to use terminal.
