Is there a correlation between the upgrade to the new OS and my dock? When I upgraded, a day later, my dock was defaulted to the factory settings, along with my icon sizes.

Try deleting the Dock settings file. To do it, open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.dock.plist", open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities) and type: killall Dock
After doing it, open System Preferences > Dock, and try to mark the option to hide Dock. If it doesn't work, reinstall OS X 10.8.4 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659

Volume issue with new 30G IPOD and Dock while playing through a stereo.

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I recently purchased a 30G Video IPOD and Dock. While playing through my Stereo I notice that 1) I have to turn up the volume on the IPOD to more than 50% and volume on the receiver to over 50% also and 2) the varience in volume of some of the songs varies consideably. I played by IPOD at a friends home through his Dock and stereo and he controlled through the volume control only on his stereo (same Onkyo as mine), it overode the IPOD volume control. His Dock is about a year old, seems strange that when I use my Dock on his stereo it requires the volume use on BOTH the IPOD and the Stereo. So it would appear that his older Dock is more convenient to use than my new Dock? The fluctations in volume of the odd song is still evident on his stereo as it is on mine.Any comments anyone? Make sure Soundcheck on the iPod is enabled.
I recall a few other people have mentioned the volume control on the iPod affected the volume out the back of the Universal dock.
I have the older dock and it is not affected by the Volume control of the iPod.

My Finder menu, HD, and dock all disappeared after I mistakenly downloaded a bogus version of Firefox. How do I get them back?

I think I may have gotten some sort of virus after downloading a "bogus" Free version of Firefox. I uninstalled Firefox immediately, because I noticed my Macbook was acting strangely, but the next time I turned it on, my HD, Finder menu, and dock were all gone! Basically there is now an empty, blue screen. I have booted in safe mode and deleted preferences, but nothing is working.

This probably is the mistake you made. Many sites that offer application downloads also include adware as an unrequested 'bonus'. Try AdwareMedic and it should take care of the unwanted ad popups:

The lesson is, always download from the developers web site or from the APP store. That way no unwanted items will not be included.

No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

How securely attached is your Helix tablet and dock?

Can't say I am 100% happy with my Helix so far, there are a few problems that I would quite like answers to, but this one ranks on top.
The connection between my tablet and dock seems to be rather loose, to put a number here, when connected, the top of the tablet would have a 1cm play back and forth.
Is this normal, i.e., what is it like on yours.

I see what you are saying now. There is a slight lift, but I never would have noticed without this post. It stays flush with the dock almost, but you are correct there is a small minor amount of space that can be had by pulling upwards on the sides. If you lift at the middle whiile docked, there is no lift. There is minor wiggle when typing on the keyboard, but since I have had my Helix I did not even notice until it was brought to my attention. The wiggle only occurs on very *rough* typing. I type with a fairly dainty touch, so I might not be the best judge in this case as far as wiggle when typing. The view of the screen during my *rough* typing test was not really affected enough for me to care, but I can see how it would bother people and bring into question the build quality.

I have an airport extreme and express setup. My extreme is in my 2nd floor office with windows facing the water. My dock is about 250 ft away down a very steep hill. I have the express about 100 ft down the hill in an electrical waterproof box attached to a tree as high as I could install. The signal is weak and I'm thinking I might have to buy another express. Any thoughts on the best setup for me. I ultimately want to control speakers(hard wired in) down at the dock with my iphone. I have a receiver coming with airplay built in.

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

Main screen and dock move to second display

Hi all,
although i found many replies regarding to how to get the dock to the desired screen i face the following problem.
I am a vj/dj using serato dj, mix emergency and madmapper. Whenever i connect a second display to my macbook (macbook pro early 2013 retina, now on OS 10.9) the main screen and dock is transferred to that second display (e.g. projector). These softwares need to run to the main screen only, and this should be my laptop's screen.
Even if i get the dock back to my macbook display, these softwares recognise as MAIN display the external one and not my macbook pro's display.
I am facing this problem since my OS upgrade to 10.9 from 10.8!
Can i do something to my macbook so as to always recognise its own display as the main display? Does this problem exist on Yosemite as well?
Can i downgrade to 10.8 if all the rest fail?

I understand you want your MacBook Pro to be the default display for your DJ software when you have a second display connected to it. Take a look at the article below that explains all of the options for extending or mirroring your displays. I've highlighted some key information below that may be helpful in your situation. Even though the article is for Mavericks, the info should still be applicable.

You can also assign an app to a specific display space from the app's menu in the Dock. Windows assigned to a space always open there when the display you specified is connected.
The blue boxes in Displays preferences represent each display that's connected. The size of each box is relative to the current resolution of each display. In this example, the smaller box on the left is the display of a 13" MacBook Pro while the larger box on the right represents the Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display.
Drag any of the blue boxes to change the location of a display in relation to your additional screens. You can use this feature to make sure your connected displays match their real world location when navigating windows. The white bar at the top of the blue box represents the menu bar. Drag the white bar onto the blue box representing the display you want as your primary display.

Disappearing Tool Bar and Docking Bars

While using Mail, my toolbar slides away, as does my docking bar. I can't seem to find anything in Preferences to correct this. Help!

Application is in Full Screen mode.
When an Application is in Full Screen mode, Menu bar, Toolbar and Dock will be hidden.
Move the cursor to the top and click the blue double arrow icon to get back to the normal window mode
or press esc key at the top left corner of the keyboard.
Clicking the gray double arrow icon at the top right corner of the window will make window Full Screen.

Why do I have sound only coming out of one side of headphone, car, stereo and docking station when playing itunes?

Try cleaning out the headphone jack with a cotton swab.

WHERE ARE "DESKTOP" AND "DOCK" SETTINGS STORED?

I want to backup my desktop and dock settings. Where are they stored so that I can do this?

If you are backing up your home folder, you are also backing up your user prefs all of which are stored in "Your User Name"/Library/Preferences. There are several other "Preferences" folders that contain "global" prefs, namely /Library/Preferences and /System/Library/Preferences.
One potential "trap" though... corrupted prefs files are often the cause of anomalous system behavour so saved prefs should be copied back into new folders with caution.

Grainy view of menus and dock

Recently the menu bars, pull-down menus and dock icons have all taken on a grainy (pixelated?) and transparent quality on my PowerBook G4 display. This effect also applies to any file or program icons on my desktop.
In addition, the cursor has occasionally a 1"x1" square of dots/dashes that follow it around and cannot be deleted or trashed.
This may have happened after the latest software update for OS X.
Should I take this in for repair, or is there something else I can do?

System Preferences > Display - on the first tab there is a 'colours' menu - make sure this is set to the highest setting (Millions)
I had this issue - I was playing a game that reset the screen to 'Thousands' making everything look grainy and of a poor quality

Desktop and Dock refreshing

Hello,
So my dock and desktop are refreshing (desktop is going white, and dock is doing the same animation as auto-hide, then re-apearing). That's basically the only thing that is happening, but it has become frustrating, and more of an annoyance than anything. I was wondering if anyone had a solution. I tried verifying and repairing my disk by cmd(Apple Sign)+R, and that didn't do a thing. Same problem, although I'm sure it did something good considering it repaired some problem, but would formatting my disk completely help? Would love to know as this would save me time from backing up my iTunes purchases, important documents, etc.
PS: I don't have time machine enabled, and I'm running on the newest update of Lion (10.7.5 - within the passed week.) The problems started sometime after this update if that clears anything up.

Okay, this may sound really bad. I happen to be fairly new to the Mac world, I'm used to getting around for basic use. But where would I go to do this? Do you mean re-installing my drivers, or taking out my components and putting them back in the MacBook itself?

My desktop and dock gone

When I restart or turn on my iMac, I get to the account screen, but once in my account, my desktop and dock are gone and replaced by a grey screen. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
