10.4.8 and my Laptop non-intel

I'm afraid I may have installed the latest Tiger version 10.4.8 onto my G4 Powerbook before I should have.
Is 10.4.8 only for the intel chip? Because since I've upgraded to this version my Laptop doesn't startup sometimes and I have to force reboot twice before it comes up.
The gray screen w/ the Apple comes up and nothing else for minutes. I force the reboot, flush the Pram and once it comes up I disk utility repair permissions... and the same thing happens.
I have the extended warrenty on it and I may just take it in to have it serviced, but wondered if this has happened to others and if I need to downgrade back to 10.4.6?
thanks.
g

Your laptop can run the latest version of Tiger. It runs on either PPC or Intel Macs, but there are different versions for each.
You may be having problems because you did not repair your hard drive and permissions before installing the update. You might want to try repairing the drive:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
If the above doesn't help you may need to reinstall OS X. You can do that without erasing the drive by doing an Archive and Install.

  • Using MacBook backup with non-Intel Mac laptop

I'm scheduled for a computer replacement at work (not a new one, but a hand-me-down from someone else). I was originally told it would have to be a Windows PC (grrr), but then it turned out that someone who recently left for another job had a Mac laptop that I can have instead. I'm not sure exactly what model it is, but it's my understanding that it's only a year or two old. I assume it will be an iBook or a PowerBook.
I'm wondering if I can use my MacBook backup (which is on an external harddrive and is bootable) to boot up a non-Intel Mac laptop. Since I have to send my MacBook back in for repair (second round of RSD), I was hoping that once I get this older laptop I could just boot from my external and keep on working as if I still had my MacBook (without the ability to use Windows of course). I assume all the programs (except Parallels) would be compatible, but would the system files work?

I don't think it will allowed you to boot from that external that installed with os X 10.4.x (compiled for macintel version).
But surely you can use the data in it if you have proper or similar program at the older portable mac.
But if you willing to try it, it won't hurt, just connect that external and restart while pressing the option key, and if it shows as an option for start up, click on it and see how it goes. If nothing happen, simply shutdown the laptop and restart regularly using its own hd.
    Good Luck.

  • Upgraded to ios7, and can't connect to my non-intel computer anymore

I have an iphone 4, and just upgraded to OS 7. I have a non-intel mac which won't run the newest ituens, and now itunes can't connect to my iphone to add music from my computer. Is there any workaround besides buying a new computer (which I can't really afford to do)?

Yeah, turn roaming on.  The work wifi issue may be a firewall.  Have you checked with your IT department?

  • Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) Now have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but won't accept serial number

Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) along with prior Photoshop versions. Now I have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but it won't accept my original serial number (Starts with PSW401, etc.).

I know what you are saying. I had purchased the CS5.5 upgrade, and a week later got the CS6 upgrade. I did this back in 2012. I had a old Mac Power PC which does not allow you to install CS5.5 or CS6 because it was not an intel processor. So even though I had the upgrades I never installed them. I waited until my old MAC died which it did this past weekend. And now that I have a new iMac I tried to install the new software. All of my past upgrades referenced my original Photoshop that was still resident on my old Mac. But since the install no longer has that reference because of the new computer, it will not accept any of my past serial numbers that it needs for the install.

  • Uninstall FCP 5.0 and reinstall 5.1 universal binary version on non intel

I have a non intel G5 and just got another intel based Mac, i heard they have fixed the issus with compressor 2.0 in the new version of Final Cut Pro 5.1 which i have also bought and was wondering how to go about uninstalling and reinstalling FCP so that i can take advantage of compressor 2.1 and FCP 5.1. I have the rest of the FCP Studio on my non intel based Mac also but i will be leaving it installed as is, can i just update my FCP 5.1 with the FCP 5.1 disc or would it be better to do i full uninstall and than a reinstall. I have used app zapper in the past on other apps, can i use it for FCP as well, Thanks Charles

    figured it out

ok thanks, that's what I tought, looks like apple machines are only good for two - three years, the software developers are ahead of the hardware to a certain point, love macs but this is forcing us to buy new macs just to keep  up with development. There was a time it was the opposite.
By the time we get up on new stuff it's time to change again. Gotta be rich to deal with macs ...LOL

  • Intel and non Intel versions of Applications.

In upgading to Snow Leopard, I became conscious of many of the programs having an Intel and non Intel version. Such as "Dashboard" and "Dashboard-Intel". If I trash the non-intel version: will the programs work correctly? It would save a lot of disk space....
    Thanks
    asuch

Which Application folder? There is the root-level one, which you see when you double-click on your boot volume icon and one for each user, if you've ever selected to install only for that user. If the former, give some examples, since I only see one of each application displayed there. If the latter, all of user's Application folders are nonexistent.

  • Syncing non intel mac to ipad and iphone, how?

I am still using a G5 so non-intel and has OS 10.5.8. Yeah I know, upgrade. Was waiting forever for new MacPro but now waiting for 27" iMac to be redily available.
Soooo, I do have iPad Gen 1 running 5.1.1 which I believe is the max for the 1st gen.
    Just got an iPhone 5.
I sync computer to iPad and cloud that to iPhone... BUT everything doesn't come over. Contacts on iPad shows groups called "From My Mac" and another set called, .mac.
The only contacts that sync to iPhone are the ones in the ".mac" set which are not the ones I want and those are not visible on my iPad so I cannot figure how to change/import/transfer to it.
Sure, soon I will have the new iMac but until then, what fundimental issue am I mising?
    Thanks.
PS: this never ends... not all apps sync'd to iPhone and none of the music. Could that be because I aquired them when I had a different iTunes ID?

also, can't direct sync from computer to iPhone re the new connector.

  • Updating Firefox for MAC G5 X.5 non Intel, and also with Intel -core 2 duo (non x86?).

    Dear Firefox and Mozilla,
My wife has a MAC G5 10.5.8 Power PC. She gets upgrade messages from you and can not contact you, as some smartypants has a popup that says she can't until she upgrades. Probably because she doesn't have the INTEL core, she can not download the latest Firefox. Will you be supporting non Intel?
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo on my MAC G5 MacBook......not the x86??, and have Firefox 8.0.1.....which seemed not to like me at the 7.0 download. Are there issues or considerations that I should be aware of?
Thank you for your time and help. We appreciate the work that goes into having Firefox here for us.
    Garfield Barnes

As of Firefox 4.0 and newer only the Intel is supported as the PPC was dropped and 64-bit was put in place with the 32-bit version.
For PPC Macs there is two options. Either you can use the current 3.6.* version from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Or you can try a third-party version of Firefox 8.0 from http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
However do see http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported if you use this version.

  • I have a non intel G5 and would like to download i-tune songs that I have recently purchased. I have tried everything and can't find the downloads. Did this G5 just become obsolete with itunes? If not what is the problem?

I have a non intel G5 and would like to download i-tune songs that I have recently purchased. I have tried everything and can't find the downloads. Did this G5 just become obsolete with itunes? If not what is the problem?

You can do it with Leopard but it depends upon the iTunes version which you did not reveal.  Also make sure you are looking in the right place for purchases.
Consider buying a backup drive so you do not need to do this again.  If you are going to run old hardware and software you need to live differently because yes, at some time you will find your version of iTunes no longer works.  You're lucky it still works with Leopard.  As you can see, some versions still work with the iTunes Store but not for repeat downloading.
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability by country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple recommends,  "... back up your iTunes library. " (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519).
    Additional tip at https://discussions.apple.com/message/24176756#24176756
Select the iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes if you have the sidebar displayed, or with the button at the top right.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/26364186#26364186)
You can re-download your available previous purchases.

  • Most recent Photoshop Elements version that will run well on G4 PowerMac (non-Intel) and Tiger?

    Good afternoon.
I am wondering if it is wise to try to get a "OK" version that will run on a G4 MDD, or just take the plunge and go to an Intel machine.
I don't that the sound of that thought.....but it may be the new reality.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Bruce,
Latest I can find is  v6...
    Apple/Macintosh requirements for Elements 6:
    PowerPC® G4 or G5 or multicore Intel® processor
    Mac OS X v10.4.8 through 10.5.2
    512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
    64MB of video RAM
1GB of available hard-disk space (additional free space required during installation)
    1,024x768 display resolution
    DVD-ROM drive
QuickTime 7 software required for multimedia features
Internet connection required for Internet-based services
    http://hiddenelements.com/elements6_requirements.php
    Apperently v7 is Windows only...
    http://hiddenelements.com/elements7_requirements.php
Depends how much work you do with it it, but a Mac Mini even will run circles around the fastest G4.

  • What kind of camcorder can I get with a non Intel Mac

I am looking to buy my first camcorder and plan to spend about $300.00. After reading the following quote about a Sony camcorder I am a bit concerned, as I do not have an intel mac, I have a iMac G5 Isight -2.1 cpu,2.5GB ram. I have iMovie 08 and Leopard. What kind of camcorder should I get with my set up?
"I also have new unibody 2008 Mac Book pro OS X - laptop detects camera right away and launching iMovie08, offering video transfer. If you have older, non Intel Processor Mac - forget about this camera - and ALL OTHER's AVCHD/H.264 camcorders - most likely they will not be working for you. So, please, do not write negative reviews, do not confuse people, OK? "

Something like this should work: http://tinyurl.com/ycy4rnu
Although list price is only about $200, with the extra battery(s?), Firewire cable, camcorder case, blank media, etc., that you will need if you do not already have them, $300 is not far off.
You can also consider other Firewire connected camcorders that are compatible with your Mac and OS.
Before I buy, I like to download the user guide for the camera I am considering and review it to be sure it does what I want. Regardless of which camcorder you are considering, if you cannot find the information about system compatibility in the camcorder's documentation, the retailer can help you find the information you need.
As shown in iLife System requirements, iMovie 8 can work with your Mac and a compatible camcorder:

Note that AVCHD and 24-bit recording have requirements beyond those stated in your system info.

  • Setting up wirless broadband for apple and pc laptops?

My present setup is fully wired broadband with ISP providing 1Mb max speed. We want to go wireless, with 2 apple laptops and 1 pc laptop in the house, but keeping our hardwired iMac. I understand that I need an ADSL wireless modem/router, which will be connected to my phone line and my existing modem should be connected to the wireless router.
    (1) Do I need a special router that can work with both pc and apple laptops?
    (2) Do the laptops require special cards fitted?
    (3) I understand that I should get a wireless router to the new draft 'n' standard 802.11n. Do the laptops also need this specification to function?
(4)Do you know any which comply with this standard?
As some one who really is not very technical, I would appreciate any advice in simple terms.
    Thanks
    imac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7) D-Link ADSL modem

I understand that I need an ADSL wireless modem/router, which will be connected to my phone line and my existing modem should be connected to the wireless router.
No. If you get an ADSL wireless modem/router there won't be any need for your current modem.
You could get an inexpensive 802.11b or 802.11g compliant wireless router (sans modem). Then you would connect the modem to the wireless router and the iMac to the wireless router.
    (1) Do I need a special router that can work with both pc and apple laptops?
No, an inexpensive 802.11b or 802.11g compliant wireless base station will work with both.
    (2) Do the laptops require special cards fitted?
If you provide details on the Apple laptops we can tell you pretty easily. Same with the Windows laptop... probably.
    (3) I understand that I should get a wireless router to the new draft 'n' standard 802.11n. Do the laptops also need this specification to function?
Since that is still draft, none of Apple's products support it.

  • Ipod Classic 160 6th g. doesn't sync w/Imac g5 non intel OS 10.4.11. This is a replacement for same ipod which was stolen recently. That pod worked fine with Itunes 9! Now this pod says it only works with Itunes 10.7. ***!!!! Why has Apple screwed up?

My ipod classic 160 6th gen. was recently stolen. It had 3000 tunes on it and it synced perfectly with Itunes 9 on my Imac G5 non intel OS 10.4.11. So I recently bought same model and guess what, it doesn't sync at all. Now message says it only works with Itunes 10.7 and up. I certainly cant afford to buy a new intel based Mac and I really dont need a new pc. It feels like Apple has dropped the ball on its long time users and tough luck to you and all the $$$$$$$ spent on downloading songs and buying ipods over the years! I AM SO ANGRY THAT I CANNOT BRING MY MUSIC WITH ME ANYMORE. I dont know if there is any solution to this except being extorted to upgrade to new tech! I have been trying to get answers to this issue but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not a tech genius so extremely techy solutions will be in vane.

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Sony HDR-SR11 /AVCHD/NON-INTEL MAC/HELP

I have called both sony and apple tech support and both offered little help today.
I have a Sony HDR-SR11 that I shot some HD content with. The computer registers that the camera is there as an external HDD. Sony's FAQ suggested that I save the AVCHD file to my HDD and it should work....NOPE
I hooked it up to a PC and installed the software it comes with and I was able to view my files but not export them into a normal format.
I have 2 sets of files one set is .m2t and the other is .mts both say they are Unix Executable files..***!
I have a Power MAc G5 running Leopard and Final Cut Pro 6 I ran the software update and it says that as of today 100% up to date yet it says that FCP should be 6.0.2 mine says 6.0
Apple support said that it may not even work on a non-intel Mac.....HELP
anyone get this to work, supposedly Imovie work s with it but the files are grayed out in the menus for imovie so I dunno all I know is I need this footage off the camera ASAP.
    Thanks

I came here actually looking for a different solution and not the one I'm about to say... but I will tell you that the new iMovie will import the video straight off the camera (in either 960x540 or 1920x1080). It's not ideal, but it works.
In fact, I'm doing so right now, but I came here hoping there might be news of a new fix so that FCP will import it directly (it will not, log & capture will not do it, just so others are clear on this).
That said, the video off the camera looks very nice. I'm still happy with the camera, even if I do have to do one hoop jump before I can edit.
