10.4.8 broke my iMac

Or at least I think it did. I'm still new to Macs, and have yet to learn the ins and outs of trouble shooting my problems.
That being said, I need some help. After updating to 10.4.8, iLife (sans iTunes) refuses to work. I thought it was contained to iLife, but after I repaired permissions and used Cocktail, apps like QuikSilver stopped working. I'm not sure what my next step is, but I'm not opposed to a complete reinstall of OS X if necessary. I can backup all my music & other important files on my External HDD before the whole process.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

It took a while, but I did the archive and install, and I'm up and running at 10.4.8 with no problems (yet).
If this keeps giving me trouble, maybe I can parlay my AppleCare into a new 24in iMac... just maybe.

  • Yahoo Broke my iMac!

For some reason I cannot connect to Yahoo to retrieve my email. I can get to Yahoo, but when I click on Mail it times out, this has been happening for a few weeks now.
I also have POP access enable so I use Mac Mail to send/recieve email from this account, but Mail times out too.
I first thought it was an issue with Safari, so I tried Firefox and Shiira but same result.
So I then tried using my MacBook and it working flawlessly.
So it's something unique to my iMac, but I cannot think of what it would be.
    Any ideas?

Do you have the Yahoo Premium Mail service that lets you Send and Receive via POP access? If not, that would explain the problem; you can only send email through Mail in that case.
If you do have Yahoo Premium mail, check your account settings for Yahoo in Mail; your Incoming Mail Server sould be pop.mail.yahoo.com, your Outgoing Mail Server is whatever your ISP says. Click on the Advanced tab in Mail Preferences and be sure that Enable this account, Include when automatically checking for new mail, and Remove copy from server after retrieving a message are checked, and that you're connecting on Port 110 using Pasword authentication.
If that doesn't work, I would try contacting Yahoo support.

  • Security Update 2008-006 Broke My iMac

After installing the most recent security update (2008-006) my computer is absolutely crawling to the point where it is unusable. I'm also seeing the Network Settings changed message when I get to the system preferences after waiting 10 min between mouse clicks and watching the dreaded beachball spin away. I have booted from an external drive and reinstalled the update, repaired permissions, run apple jack, disk warrior and drive genius with no improvement. How can Apple release something that would absolutely destroy my computer? Is archive and install my only option? Will Apple release a fix for this? I s it worth the wait for the next security update. I really would rather not reinstall my system. Suggestions? Help please?

How can Apple release something that would absolutely destroy my computer?
    They can't, and didn't.
Is archive and install my only option?
Might be, or if you simply restored the backup you made prior to installing the update. Though an archive and install may not totally overwrite the security issues. It suggests you have some data files that are corrupted as a result of using Applejack in the past. Such utilities should never be used without a backup.
Will Apple release a fix for this?
Speculation on this board is strictly prohibited. Please read the Terms of Use on the right. Your question requires speculation.
Is it worth the wait for the next security update.
No. Because if one issue happens directly following a security update, chances are it will continue happening until you find the software that doesn't work well with security updates, or the damaged preference or cache file that's doing the problem.
You can sort of backtrack but you should do the following if you have no backup.
    1. Clone backup your machine twice*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    2. Erase and install your operating system using the retail installer, or installer that came with your Mac (whichever is newer).
    3. Run the combo update that brought you where you were before.
    4. Repair permissions.
    5. Run the security update.
    6. Repair permissions again.
    7. Restore your user data to the appropriate folders as outlined in my backup FAQ before once you have verified none of the built-in software is causing an issue. If there is an issue with the built-in software, it says that perhaps your router is not properly configured to understand Apple's security updates and needs an updated firmware or replacement with one that is known to work with the system.

  • Broke ram lever!

So I am a fairly experienced computer user, in both hardware and software, but I just broke my iMac's ram lever. I am annoyed. I was simply pushing it outward like it said, but the ram wasn't coming out, and some more force... it snapped! Oh, and the ram slid out a bit.
Now the lever won't get the ram out, obviously...
Any suggestions on what I should do? I want to get the lever fixed, obviously. The machine is under warranty, and has extended AppleCare. It was just purchased at a retail store last month...
I am a bit flustered, to say the least.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It looks like an easy fix, the ejector clips mount with a screw as you can see in this photo!!! An Apple Tech should be able to replace the clip in no time.

Call your local Apple Store, explain that when you were upgrading your ram the clip broke tring to eject the factory ram modules!
    Good Luck

  • Leopard Primary Drive Partition Setup

    Hi..
I am about to purchase an IMAC, As the hard drive is huge I am keen to partition it. I mainly want to create an OS partition (for OS and Virtual memory/swap space etc) and then a second one that has the applications and data etc.
This will allow me to back up the OS partition separately from the Apps and Data and the OS partition would be smaller.
As I am new to the MAC world I was wondering what the recommended (and the minimum) size for the OS partition should be.
I am also intending issing VM Fusion for other "OS" systems (ala Windows) and don't intend using BootCamp.
Anyway.. any advice would be appreciated.

ps. shame IMAC doesn't allow a second physical drive if it had I would probably have set up a solid sate drive for the OS/swap space and put my data etc on the other normal hard drive but Oh well that is life..

As for partitioning, note that Leopard's Disk Utility allows you to repartition without erasing. I broke my iMac's HD into seven partitions. But I do a lot of beta testing, so have multiple bootable OSs. While you're trying to develop your strategy, get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire), and make a bootable backup/clone before partitioning and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. It also allows you to have a space for Time Machine and other bootable backups/clones. • Mac OS 10.5.4 broke printing from iMac, and MacBook Pro to Brother ML-1740

I have had my five Macs (iMacs, Mac Book Pros, Mac Books) all printing via an Air Port Express to a Brother ML-1740 Laser Printer. As each one downloaded and was upgraded to 10.5.4 they lost the ability to print to this printer. They can still see it, but print jobs just hang in the queue with "Connecting"... I have restarted all networking equipment. The remaining 10.5.3 unit can still print to the printer. Where do I even start in troubleshooting this? How can a mere dot upgrade to Mac OS kill printing for this printing? Do they not test backwards compatibility at all!?!?!?!?

Have you tried changing the Leopard firewall settings?
(System Prefs > Security > Firewall)
    from <Allow only essential services>
    to <Allow all incoming connections>?
I have an HP Officejet Pro AIO network printer (not wireless) and printing broke with 10.5.4. Turning off the Leopard firewall (as above) allowed me to print. Not a great solution maybe, but a very useful troubleshooting step. Try it!

  • I broke it and I know it.  Can't recover iMac

I broke my new-to-me iMac (21.5", mid 2011, Lion).  I had turned on FileVault just to see what it was about, then I turned it off just to see the process.  That wouldn't be so bad, but then I decided to try to reinstall OS X before it finished decrypting.  Something went haywire in the process and now I can't get it to recover.  I can use the cmd+r to get into the Mac OS X Utilities, but I can't erase the drive (Couldn't unmount disk).  If I select Reinstall MAC OS X, it doesn't see a drive to install to.  It just sees the 650MB Recovery HD.
Before I did all this I was able to do the recovery when I first started playing with it.
What are my options?  There is no data to recover, so any viable option is possible.

I think I solved it.  In Disk Utility I was able to click on the untitled drive, unmount, and then erase.  Then the recovery could see it.
This is my first deep dive into a Mac, so I'm learning.

  • IMac Headphone Jack broke - Can I switch?

The headphone jack on my old iMac Intel 2006 is broke. The red light is always on as well.
I've tried everything and read up on all discusstions on the board. But nothing gives.
Is there a way to use the audio-in as the audio-out? Somehow switch the usage of the 2 jacks? The in jack is fine.
    Thanks for the help!

Have you replaced your PRAM battery?  Sometimes that's all that is needed.

  • My iMac screens broke it's not a new iMac it's old but it's blue behind it.

My iMac screens broke it's not a new iMac it's old but it's blue behind it. Does anyone know how much it would be to fix?

This is an international community.  Prices vary from country, state, city, etc.
You should call the repair shop of your choice and ask for an estimate.  Make sure the estimate includes taxes, labor costs, etc.
Remember, no one can give you an exact figure until the repair techs physically examine & run diagnostics on your computer to confirm what is wrong w/it.

  • Late 2013 iMac 27 inch, hinge broke by itself...

I got my maxed out iMac 27 inch just few days over 1 years ago...
Wasn't doing anything to my desk or iMac, but I just hear loud "tick!" from my desk, I thought some metal part fell out from my desk or something...
But it turned out to be hinge, now my iMac is alway looking down...
I did some research, looks like this is one of the common problem for 27 inch iMacs...
Now, magically my hinge broke just few days after my apple care ran out...
How much is it to get this thing fixed? I'm trying to contact apple support, but chat, call, I have been holding for 45 minutes now.
I spent about $3000 and I'm still paying for it, and they make and give me something that last One year and Two weeks?
This is sad... anyone got cheaper option to fix this please help...

Apple lists these environmental conditions for most of its machines:
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Storage temperature: -13° to 113° F (-24° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 0% to 90% noncondensing
    Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
    Maximum storage altitude: 15,000 feet
    Maximum shipping altitude: 35,000 feet
If you don't believe you are exceeding them up or down, you may have a hardware problem that your 1 year AppleCare may cover.  See first if the hardware test booting the 'D' key is revealing:

  • IMac Led Display Glass Broke

My iMac fell and the front glass broke, everything works but I'm not sure if its save to keep on using it like that, or is it possible to repair?

Can you post a photo of the problem?
You say the problem is visible when the screen is off, so it's not related to the video card, but just to make sure, try taking a screen shot using "command, shift, 3" to see if the problem is visible there.
Is your iMac covered with an Apple Care warranty?
If so, call Apple and schedule a repair.
Most likely, they will replace the LCD panel.
If not covered, then I am afraid it's a costly repair!

  • IMac pram battery holder broke

My pram battery holder broke when replacing batt on 2007 24" alum iMac . The black plastic tab on the right came off so now the battery won't stay seated. Is there an easy fix?

I was able to use a folded piece of business card to wedge the battery in place.

  • IMac quality going down? My broke down after 1 year and 4 weeks!

I bought the top of the range iMac on July 14, 2011. Today is 1 year and 4 weeks later - it is in the apple shop because the graphic and logic card are broken. With a fee of over 600 dollars.
Is this what one can expect? Just angry!

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
All manufacturers have the occasional bad device. It is the combination of items from multiple manufacturers. That is why Apple Care is a good investment. For about US$100 this would have been a free repair and you would have two more years of warranty coverage.
