10.4.8 broke wireless connection - fixes?

Went from 10.4.5 to 10.4.8 a few days ago. Now, the following things happen when I try to connect to my Linksys router with AirPort Extreme:
-My network often doesn't show up in the list
-When it shows up in the list and I select it, I usually get 'There was an error connecting to the AirPort network'. I am using WPA (not WPA2) password protection.
-The few times I have gotten it to work, the connection was EXTREMELY slow and NEVER lasted more than five minutes. I've never had this much trouble getting the connection to work.

What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band? Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on.

Bought my girlfriend the newest Macbook Pro 13" and began experiencing problems with my wifi the moment we got home. Her Macbook would not connect to our home Wi-Fi while my old Macbook Late 2008 running Snow Leopard connected without a problem. Airport would say that it had a Self-Assigned IP address (168.x.x.x). Did not realize it was a Lion problem until after using her Macbook Pro and becoming jealous of the new OSX, I upgraded. Soon after I was unable to go online. Luckily I had my iPad 2 and I began to scoure the net for help. Ran into allot of suggestions but it was not until I tried the following all together was I able to share the good new, from my Macbook. Hope this works:
First go to Preferences > Network and click on the cog next to the + and - on the sidebar and click Set Service Order
     - Move Wi-Fi to the top and click ok.
     - Set location to Automatic
     - Click Apply
     - Click Advanced
     - Click the "-" on the selected Wi-Fi router you wish to connect to
     - Click Apply
     - Click Lock to Prevent Further Changes
Go to your Mac's harddrive, (Macintosh)
     - Go to Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration >
     - Delete "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" file
Turn off your computer
     - push and hold Option+Command+R+P
     - turn on computer
     - when the grey screen turns on you will hear the OS X "ON" sound (for lack of a proper term) and it will momentarily restart.
     - you will once again hear the "ON" sound, let go of all keys.
     - this resets your PRAM
Go to Preferences > Network > Advanced > + sign
     - click Choose a Network
     - Select your network and enter password

     No you are clearly mistaken. The Self-Assigned IP address problem exists on many Macbook Pro models, including the current model, which I mentioned as being the original computer with the problem. While my 2008 Macbook is older it was working perfectly on Snow Leopard and didn't suffer issues until switching to Lion. So clearly the problem exists on the operating system and not so much the hardware.
     I called Apple Support and they had no fix for the problem and told me that this would hopefully be addressed in a subsequent update. It wasn't until I came accross the answer after trying many different methods that I got both of the Macbooks to connect to my router. Otherwise I wouldn't or could not have been surfing the internet for the last 4 months.

One Solution for Fixing Slow Wireless Connection

Quick and easy solution for slow wireless connection.
My hardwired PC connection was working fine over FIOS, but my wireless connection through my Macbook Pro was soooo slowwww, although the machine itself was fine. Pages would take forever to appear, then finally sort of pop up. Didn't really seem to be a Mac problem, just a connection problem.
After searching forever to find a fix, I found a quick & easy solution that works at least for now: change your DNS address.
I'm not a techie so I don't know ALL of the implications of doing this, but in desperation, it has worked for me and I think at no risk to your network or machine. Changing my DNS address has made my connection blazing fast and relieved many weeks of frustration.
HOW: I can only share how to change on a Mac. (Please chime in if you can give directions for PC. ) Just go to this Apple support page, which will outline exactly how to do it. I used 4.2.2.2, I think you can also use 4.2.2.1 as the DNS address. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2002

Actually this is a common problem with Mac OSX (http://rubyisbeautiful.com/2008/2/8/osx-dns-fix-update) and how it does DNS lookups and pertains to routers that provide the internal gateway (i.e. 192.168.1.1) as the DNS address which is what the ActionTec does by default.
You can change that at the router level to either push out Verizon's dns that the router then uses or any other open dns server. I had to do this a long time ago for some of the OS X boxes on my network.

IPad cycles the wireless connection only at my home. Any fix?

iPad no longer holds connection to home wireless. Works fine with other hot spots. Other wireless devices at home still connect fine, as did iPad preciously. The change happened when upgraded to IOS 7 0.5. Upgrading to 7 0.6 did not fix issue. Apple store Genius Bar rebooted iPad, and sent me home. Issue remains.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

so i am using an airport express and remotely access computers/servers via SSH. port forwarding is set up and the computer has a fixed local IP address.
if i continue to issue command in the shell, then the connection persists. however, if i leave it idle for some amount of time more than a half an hour, both terminal and xterm (X11) freeze for a considerable amount of time. then they time out and return to a active shell on the local computer.
i have since determined that this does not occur if i am using a direct (built-in) ethernet connection.
is this problem fixable? are there settings in airport admin utility that can be changed to prevent this from occuring?
any advice or pointers would be tremendously appreciated

thank you for the suggestion. i added the lines to my .ssh/config file and so far it seems to have solved the problem.
i'll evaluate it over the next few days and post back if i notice any problems. it seems to achieve what i was thinking at least conceptually. to somehow, while idle, send something to ensure the connection stays alive.

10.5.2 failed to fix wireless connection dropping problem

10.5.2 did not fix wireless connection dropping problem. I lose wireless connection whenever my MBP restarts or wake up from sleep in the building where I am and have to retype password about 10 times a day. I had not had this problem when I used Tiger. Everyone who has upgraded to Leopard or has it installed on their Mac is experiencing the same problem. Is there any solution or trick to resolve this problem? Thank you.

Troubleshooting wireless issues requires individual attention because of the plethora of issues which can't be tested for. So please start a new topic thread here:

So you can get a wider audience, and won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them.
There literally hundreds of different WiFi adapters.
Dozens of different virus and firewall combinations.
Possibilities for damaged WiFi cards and routers, as well as routers whose firmware is not to spec with the latest wireless standard.
To top it off, bad RAM, hard disk being too full, and bad preference, cache or or logfiles can make various aspects of the operating system misbehave, and/or even the directory leading to those files.
Until each person starts their own thread looking for solution individually, chances are they won't find one. Yes, 10.5.2 addresses WiFi for some people. Obviously it doesn't for everyone. The point is, there are some people, like myself who have never had a WiFi issue either with Intel or PowerPC Macs that they couldn't resolve without a little bit of troubleshooting. I'm happy to help you walk through it, but only if you start your own thread asking for help.

If you have a USB mouse handy, you can plug it in and use it to navigate to the Bluetooth settings in System Preferences to get the mouse to pair again. There are also troubleshooting steps in the article below for getting the mouse to pair as well.

Wireless connection drops sporadically

I have a Linksys router that wirelessly connects my iBook G4 and my roommate's G4 tower. It also connects to my G4 tower, but that's a wired connection.
I used to use a Linksys Wireless-B (2.4 ghz 802.11b), but it broke and now I have a Wireless-G. But, both router's gave me the exact same problem. Sporadically, the wireless connection just drops for about 5 or 6 seconds. I haven't seen any pattern, as far as how often it occurs, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it's happening.
I was told that it might be interference, so I changed the channel to 11, and everything seemed to work great for about 3 or 4 days. Then, it started happening again. I switched to channel 1, and that didn't help. I switched to a different channel, again no help. Now I'm back on 11, and it's still dropping off sporadically.
I'm pretty sure this never happens to the wired connection, but I don't use that computer very often. Any suggestions? This has been going on for months, and I don't have the faintest idea how to fix it!

I recently purchased a G5 iMac with built-in AirPort and I am having the same problem. Yes I have a cordless phone in the house and it could be interfering, but I also have a Windows laptop (I know, I know...Booo) which is on the same wireless network and it has no trouble communicating. I have tried different channels on my router and the Mac works for awhile, but then the connection starts and stops.
I was hoping the latest firmware updates for AirPort would have one for the Extreme card, but no go.
I haven't yet sat the wireless router right next to the computer to see if that cures the "interference", but that is the next step in my troubleshooting. If the pulsing internet stops pulsating and I get a constant connection I will believe all the interference rhetoric, but until then I am sceptical.
Note: I also tried the "Interference Robustness" setting and that just made it worse. There doesn't seem to be much help on that setting so I have abandoned it. Any insight from anyone on that setting?

Epson V500 Photo scanner wireless connection

I would like to make a wireless connection to my Epson V500 (Photo) scanner to my MacBook Pro running Mavericks. It is unclear if this is possible from the Epson side and on the MacBook Pro side the Scanner doesn't show up under Preferences>Sharing or Preferences>Printers & Scanners BUT I can scan from the laptop if connected by USB cable.
Questions:
A. Can the Epson V500 (Photo) be accessed wirelessly?
B. If yes to above, how do I set this up on the MacBook?

I ran into a similar problem (loss of functionality) with an Epson 7600. I traced my problem to letting software update substitute its Epson drivers for what Epson had originally provided for the printer. It got worse when installing Lion. Fortunately, I expected that problem so I applied the updates to clones of the working installation, using both more recent Epson software for their long-abandoned printer and what came down with software update. Testing the clones showed me that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so I stayed with the old installation, updating only the system software to 10.6.8.
You may face a further issue in that the working Epson software may have been at least partially written in code meant to run on a PPC Mac, not Intel, and Apple removed all support for that when moving from 10.6 to 10.7. That may be why Epson shows printer driver support only through 10.6 on its website.
One of the beauties of the Mac Pro is that you can have multiple HD drives with multiple partitions so there's plenty of room to do tests like that. But it really shouldn't be necessary...

Can't configure Wireless Connection to HP OfficeJet Pro L7780

I recently purchased both my iMac 24" 2.8GHz computer with OS x 10.5.2 and HP OfficeJet Pro L7780. I was able to use the HP setup CDs for my Windows laptops and configured them to use the printer in a wireless configuration.
The iMac is creating the headache (actually I think it's HP causing the headache). When I try to install HP's driver 9.7.1 using their utility, it is unable to detect the L7780 in a wireless configuration. The moment I connect via USB or wired Ethernet, the printer is detected without a problem. My printer is located @ 192.168.1.30, fixed IP address via a NetGear FSW308 switch. My iMac is fixed @ 192.168.1.100 and the gateway is 192.168.1.1
I spent hours on the phone with HP support and am still in the same spot... HP software won't find the printer when it is wireless. I can configure OS x 10.5.2 to use the internal L7700 series driver and put the IP address in the dialog box. The printer prints without issue using the OS printer drivers, but the other features such as scan and fax will not work without the HP software.
I can ping the printer and I can connect to the printer's EWS, but the HP software will not find the software.
Overall config: iMac wireless network connection to switch; Printer also wireless connection to switch.
So far HP is dumbfounded and all they can say is that I should call Apple because the printer software works fine when I connect the Ethernet or USB cables.

Thank you for the thought. Yes, although my SSID is public, I have a WEP 128-bit security key. The printer, the iMac and my Windows laptops all connect to the wireless network without issue, as evidenced by my Windows laptops and iMac (if I use the driver included with OS X 10.5.2).
I can ping the printer from the iMac as well as connect to the printer's web interface, so connectivity exists. It is as if the setup software or the printer are trying to communicate using a port that or service that OS X may be blocking.
My OS X firewall is configured to accept all connections though... so that shouldn't be the issue unless there is a bug in accepting all connections.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Wireless connection not working after installed newest Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update programs

Hi, everyone!
I've installed some newest programs through Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update and just after that my wireless connection has stopped working. Here are the installed programs:
ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 32-bit version 15.0.24.0;
ThinkPad Power Management Driver version 1.60;
ThinkPad Modem Adapter version 7.80.8.0;
ThinkPad Hotkey Features Integration Package Setup version 3.11.0001;
Inter Wireless WiFi Link for Window XP version 13.02.0000;
ThinkVantage Access Connections for Windows XP version 5.62;
ThinkPad Power Manager version 1.88;
Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox (32-bit) version 6.0.5514.61.
I've got a Lenovo T61 with Windows XP SP3.
Also in Device Manager, there are now the two "Other devices" bellow with a yellow question point and a yellow exclamation point by side:
Bluetooth Hands-free Audio;
Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver.
Does anyone have any idea what can be done to have these issues solved?
P.S.: when I click Fn+F5 it shows only the Bluetooth Radio.

I've seen something like this on XP machines after updates a couple of times now - my T61, a friend's T400, and his daughter's T61. I guess that makes 3
_Maybe_ your situation is the same.
The fix in all 3 cases was to go to device manager and uninstall the wifi driver. Then scan for hardware changes and let it reinstall the driver. Something about how Access Connections or some other networking mangement thingy was hooking the drivers I guess.
On both of the friend's machines, the wired networking was also b0rked. Same fix there.
