10.4.8 in an Earthlink PPPoE-connected Network

Hi, everyone. I've looked through the posts that I can find and everytime I try something, it doesn't work. So now I'd like to post my problem and see what I need to do.
I have OSX Server 4.8 in a network that is connected to the Internet via Earthlink's Zyxel 645 DSL modem. My connection to Earthlink is via PPPoE. Currently, because I have a Buffalo router in place, my 645 is in bridge mode. Therefore, the Buffalo is authenticating with my PPPoE username/password. I had an IPCOP firewall providing all of my access and firewalling but it died. So I'd like to incorporate my server to do the routing, DHCP, DNS, NAT, etc. Then I'll just use my Buffalo as a wireless AP.
According to this document, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303859, I have to put my DSL modem into "half-bridge mode" or DHCP spoofing. I went to Earthlink and they told me to factory reset the modem and that would put it in the correct "mindset" to configure my server to do everything else. I tried what they said, but I can't get the server to manage the network. Eth1 is set as my WAN interface (should be a cross-over cable plugged into the 645) and Eth2 is my LAN interface. I'm using DynDNS since I have a dynamic IP address from Earthlink.
From what I'm seeing in the other posts, PPPoE connection is a problem. I'm pretty new to the OSX server world. Can someone please help me along with the steps necessary to make this happen?
I've probably left out some information that you'll need. Please ask.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Multiple PPPoE connections on one Mac

    Hi,
I have two PPPoE type connections on my MBP; one is meant only for downloading whilst the other is my main browsing, mail, etc account.
The problem I have is this, before getting the second ISP account that I use for major downloading, I had just one PPPoE connection that I used for everything. Now that they are separate, I have the main one (the one I use for my mail and browsing, etc) set to connect when needed, hence it connects automatically when my MBP starts up due to the fact that my mail starts up on login.
I can manually disconnect it and connect the other account (downloading account) then use that connection for whatever it is that I download or stream, but the problem comes in when the other PPPoE account connects (because I never close my mail, only hide it).
So I am a little concerned that the wrong PPPoE connection might be used to download/stream my media. And, yes it is important that the accounts are used for different processes. With two PPPoE connections active (never knew that was even possible), I have been left with the option of removing the "connect when needed" option from my default connections meaning I now (It sounds lazy, I know...) I must click connect for each account when they are needed and that being as soon as I switch my MBP on.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you much!
    Kal

Never mind, I figured it out. Set the service order appropriately.

  • How to get Airport Express to authenticate the PPPoE connection so that more than one computer can get online

    Hello,
I have to use a PPPoe Connection with my ISP and have some troubles setting up the Airport Express. I can only use the Airport in Bridge Mode and DHPC and authenticate the PPPoE on the mac individually. With this solution, no second computer can be set up to use internet at the same time.
I want the Airport Expres to authenticate and pass on "free internet" so that I can connect as many devices as I wish in a normal manner (without PPPoE). However, as soon as I put all the relevant information into the Airport Express, no Internet is coming through anymore. I can connect the computers to the Airport, but there is no interet and the Airport Utility will tell me the same in its settings.
What can I do? A support member in the apple store told me there is no way to authenticate with the Airport Express but could not tell me what the Airport Express' PPPoE setting was there for in the first place. My ISP told me many customers use Airport Express Routers and that there should not be any problem.
    I am stuck:(
Thanks for your help in advance

The AirPort Express can support PPPoE regardless of what the Apple Store employee told you.
To configure the Express to do so you will need to use the AirPort Utility:
AirPort Utility > Select the Express > Edit
Internet tab > Connect Using: PPPoE
Enter the appropriate PPPoE information that your ISP has provided you in the fields on this tab.
Click on Update and allow the Express to restart.
The important thing about PPPoE is that only the device that is directly connected to the Internet should be configured of providing the PPPoE credentials, all other devices should be configured for using DHCP. Note: I am assuming that your AirPort Express is the only router in your current network configuration and that it is directly connected to an Internet modem and not another router upstream of it.

  • Macbook airport pppoe connecting

    Hi,
I've had a problem with my Macbook Pro Airport utility ever since my Apple Time Capsule router dropped internet yesterday.  The router issue resolved itself after a modem restart, and the internet works fine now.  All other computers and devices can access the internet fine, and in fact my Macbook Pro is connected to the network and can access the internet just fine (I'm typing this on it now).
However, ever since, the little wifi indicator in my menu bar has had the radiating black lines like it's still searching for the network, and my wifi network has an arrow besides its name instead of the connection strength.  When I click on the arrow I see a pop up window with some options, and the greyed out message 'pppoe connecting'.  Google searching this message seems to suggest that if pppoe isn't connected, I shouldn't have working internet, so I'm confused.
There doesn't seem to be any actual problem, everything is working fine, except that the constantly flashing lines in the menu bar are annoying me and they don't normally do that!
Any suggestions as to what's going on would be appreciated.

Ok, you should just need to enter 192.168.1.245 into your browser's address window, and you should be greeted with a request for a username & password. Leave the username blank and enter "admin" (without the quote marks) for the password...should get you in.
Do you have your WAP's User Guide handy? No problem if you don't, it would just make it easier to see the same screens when I try to explain what values need to set.
Assuming that you are now at the WAP's Setup/Network Setup page: (ref: UG, page 38)
Device Name: The default name is fine.
Configuration Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
The other values on this page (IP Address, Subnet Mask, etc.) are automatically assigned.
Going to the Setup/AP Mode tab: (ref: UG, page 40)
    Enable (select) Access point (default)
Going to the Wireless tab: (ref: UG, page 43)
    Mode: Mixed
Network Name (SSID): This is what you'll see when you look for a network when you are accessing it via AirPort. You can use the default name, or I suggest make it something unique that means something to you...to distinguish it from the others that may be near you at your dorm.
Channel: The default is 6. If you have others near you using wireless, they most likely will be defaulted to 6 as well. To prevent interference, pick another, like 11, or your favorite number, from the available range.
SSID Broadcast: This allow the name of you network to be "broadcast" so you (& other) can find it quickly. Unless you want to share your connection, and to make it more secure, you should disable this feature. You can still find it in AirPort by selecting other and typing in the name. Your call.
Ok, that's quite a bit for now. If you need to keep your wireless secure, I can take you thru the steps for using encryption.

  • AirPort asks for PPPoE connection information consists of an account name and a password. Where can I find it? My provider could not help me.

AirPort asks for PPPoE connection information consists of an account name and a password. Where can I find it? My provider could not help me.

If your provider won't tell you then you must use their provided router.. some ISP are like that.

  • Disconnect Airport Extreme PPPoE Connection

    Hello!
    I'm using the current configuration:
DSL Link -> SpeedStream ADLS modem -> Airport Extreme -> Computers
My Airport Extreme is configured to establish the PPPoE connection (the modem is bridged).
However I don't find an option to disconnect the PPPoE of the airport if I wish to.
    The given options are:
-Always on (dials and stays connected forever)
-Automatic (dials on demand, and disconnect if idle)
    -Manual (does nothing...)
I though this Manual option should have some sort of Connect/Disconnect Button or menu option, but I can find nowhere... Oddly enough, if this option is set, the AEBS doesn't connect and I never get an IP...
My question is: how do I manually connect/disconnect my PPPoE connection?
It can also be an Applescript funcion, whatever works...
    thanks!!
PS: I tried to bridge the AEBS and relay the PPPoE to Mac OSX 10.5.4... but it can't find the PPPoE server in this case.
PS2: Mac OSX 10.4 had an Utility called Internet Connection, which supposedly had an option to disconnect the airport... but 10.5 removed this app.

    One last try...
Configure a computer located near the DSL modem to connect wirelessly to your network and by Ethernet cable to a switch sitting between the DSL modem and the router. Remotely control this computer and use it to change the configuration in the DSL modem when you want to disconnect or reconnect your network from the Internet without restarting the router.

  • Unable to configure Linksys E2500 to use PPPoE connection

I am using the Ubuntu Linux 12.04 operating system and have been able to use the Linksys E2500 router with Automatic Configuration – DHCP setting and my modem in PPPoE mode to use my DSL connection. But I would like to be able to use my router with the PPPoE connection setting so I can use a firmware like Tomato which has more advanced features like bandwidth logging.
I was able to log into the configuration page of my SpeedTouch ST516 modem and set it to bridge mode according to the instructions here: http://www.speedtouch.ca/bridgemode.php
I then tried to set up the router to use PPPoE according to the instructions here: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=3687
I get the message "Can not get an IP address from PPPoE" again when I try to set up the connection in step 4. Resetting the router does not help. I also tried running 'sudo service networking restart' and the 'sudo dhclient -r; sudo dhclient' in Ubuntu's terminal but still got the same message.
I double checked that I used right login information and vpi from my ISP. I used the same info to configure the modem to PPPoE mode again so I can connect to the internet. I had to reset the modem back to factory defaults using the reset button at the back to access the modem configuration page after I disconnected the ethernet cable from the router and plugged it into the modem.
Is there a possible bug with using PPPoE with this router? Is there anything else I can try besides what is stated in the instructions linked to above?

    jaymay
"If you are getting an error "Can't get an IP from PPPoE Server", that would mean that it's possible that the account information you've typed in is incorrect or the modem is not set properly to bridged mode. You can test this by connecting your computer directly to the modem and create a PPPoE dialer. If it will let you connect successfully then you are using the correct username and password. If not then you might have to verify the correct info from your ISP."
    > Again, "I double checked that I used right login information and vpi from my ISP. I used the same info to configure the modem to PPPoE mode again so I can connect to the internet." And yes I was also able to connect with a PPPoE dialer and computer directly connected to the modem.
"It could be possible that what you just need to do in the router is to change it's LAN IP address to a different range compared to what you are getting from the modem to avoid IP conflict. For more information about setting up the router with DSL connection, you may refer to this link: Setting up a Linksys router for DSL Internet connection."
    > That link is exactly the same link in my sentence: "I then tried to set up the router to use PPPoE according to the instructions here: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=3687"
The router ip address used is set to http://192.68.2.1 which differs from the ip addresses of the modems I tried.

  • AirPort Express PPPoE: connection uptime in the bar. How to change?

    hi all,
I've just set up a PPPoE connection with my Airport Express, and now I can see connection uptime showing in the bar next to the signal strength. How to hide that counting as it's sooo annoying, but keep the signal icon in the bar?
    Thanks!

whoa... OSX is sometimes just to simple for my Windows background & way of thinking.
Thanks Freezing, that option was purely just tooooo simple for me to find it out! ;))
ok, now I know what's the beauty of OSX: simplicity.
    cheers!

  • Wireless works, but has a red X on it. Also getting error 711 on a PPPoE connection

Hi, I am having several issues with Windows 7.  This is an HP probook 6560b.  I am able to connect to wireless, but I have the red X over the connection like it is not connected.  Even though the internet is working.  I also cannot use
the PPPoE connection as I receive error 711:  The operation could not finish because it could not start the Remote Access Connection Service manager in time. immediately.
"Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on local computer. Error 1068. The dependency service or group failed to start."
I have the telephony service started but I'm getting another error when I try to start the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service, it says:
some services start and stop automatically if they are not used by any other service ... but in order to run "RACM" I need this enabled ... any ideas how to fix this ?
I've tried making sure the event log service is turned on.
Scanned PC for threats and none found
    used CCleaner to clean registry
Updated wireless drivers to latest via Intel's site.
Removed all wireless connections and rebooted
To add to this, When I used to connect to wireless, it would show the standard wireless status bars.  Then when connecting my VPN, I had a separate icon in the systray for the vpn and wireless status bars were still there.  Now I have the red X
on my wireless and when I connect the VPN, it shows a regular icon like I'm plugged into a wired connection instead of wireless.  I still have the separate VPN icon as well
If any more information is needed, please let me know.  Any help is greatly appreciated

    Hi,
Have you make any change to your system before this problem occurs? System restore is a efficient method to fix this problem.
Generally speaking, virtual NIC driver is the culprit of this problem, you can try to uninstall all NIC drivers in Device Manager, then restart the system and let system install built-in driver automatically for test.
If no use, try to use Driver Verifier to  identify driver problem for test:

  • Time Capsule 7.5.2 and PPPoE Connection

Since updating my (old) TimeCapsule to 7.5.2 I notice a strange behavior of my PPPoE connection established by the TC.
The TC opens a t-online dsl PPPoE connection which is only active for 24h and then gets new IP, before 7.5.2 I could see that TC started to re-connect after exactly those 24h.
Now, TC is still fully functional BUT displays currently "8d 00:01:14" as connection time - positive side-effect it does not lose the Time Capsule connection as well.
My question - how can I now force TC to restart the count, except by pulling the power plug of the TC ...

    Pull the power plug, or
Open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup

    Helllo,
I have a LinkSys Wireless-G 2,4ghz, and i used it for 4-5 months, but for a week now i can't connect with it to the internet.
I have a Internet connection using a PPPoE, I plugged the cabble directly in the PC and made the connection and it works, so there is no problem with the internet.
When i am trying to use it with the router it dosen't work, i have selectes the PPPoE connection then user and password, i press connect and it sits at "Connecting ..."
The Internet light is on when i put the cable in, so the port is working, and it is allso blinking witch means it sends some packages.
I have tryid to get some logs to see what is going on but faild, the only thing that i go is:

  • AEBS with PPPOE connection

Interesting problem, I have an AEBS with a PPPOE direct connection from Internet Provider (no modem), just moved to India and that is all I got. Anyway, the provider requires a PPPOE connection, the AEBS works fine, I have an internet connection but the amber light continues to flash yellow and in airport it says there is a problem with the internet connection. Again, I can connect just fine but I continue to have the flashing amber light and internet connection error. I am on v7.4.2 and airport utility 5.4.2. If anyone has suggestions how correct this I would appreciate it. Rick

    Rick, welcome to the discussions!
Open Airport Utility and click on Manual Setup. The next page is a summary of your settings. Click on the amber dot and an error message page will display.
You should have an option to "ignore" the problem listed (it's probably something like no internet connection detected, etc.). Update your settings and the light should turn green in 10-15 seconds.

  • PPPoE Connection Drops streaming video on my Linksys WRK54G

So I just set up my Linksys WRK54G Version 1.1 to handle my PPPoE connection, meaning I entered the username and password assigned to me via my ISP. It works for a bit and then seems drop the connection all together. When this occurs, I cannot even ping the router (192.168.1.1). I have to unplug the AC Adaptor and then plug it in, inorder for the connection to pick up again. It seems when I try to access streaming video from a certain site (http://www.mtv2.com/#videoPremiere/1552982) and I have PPPoE setup via my router, the connection drops. If I change the setting to "Obtain an IP Automatically" and send my PPPoE credentials through my Windows XP client all is well. No issues what so ever.
I called Linksys and they had me try setting my MTU to 1400 but that did nothing. I have the most recent firmware as well. He then said that I will need to call my ISP and increase the bandwidth on my modem to get it to work (connect directly to my modem).
I have since reset the router, downloaded the newest episode of "Heroes" and fired up You Tube and watched a few streaming videos while grabbing the torrent. Everything looked ok.
I then went back to the MTV2 link I posted above (http://www.mtv2.com/#videoPremiere/1552982) and clicked play. At the same time I set up a continuous ping to the router. Sure enough, the connection dropped completely. Unplug the AC Adaptor to the router for 1 second, plug it back in and all is well. I am truly stumped here.
Is the issue perhaps a port issue with the video I am trying to stream from MTV2? It seems regular stress tests work ok.
PS - It seems someone else was having a similar problem here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...?hilite=wrk54g
UPDATE: I went to bed and woke up and my connection has dropped completely, and I was not even downloading anything?!  Can someone please help me with this issue?

well...i guess u have tried almost everything possible on the router...try TCP optimiser .. this should adjust the MTU settings of the NIC card on the computer....
if u are having issues on the wireless computer, change channel - 1 or 11 , change beacon interval - 50 , RTS and fragmentation threshold - 2304 ...

  • Problems with PPPoE connection to Wi-Fi

    Hello,
I just got an iPod touch (2nd Generation) and the Wi-Fi works fine everywhere but at home.
I managed to connect my MacBook with the Wi-Fi but how can I connect the iPod touch to a PPPoE connection?
I can't find it anywhere in the settings and couldn't find any information on it.
    Help please!

Yes, it is DSL. The problem is that my provider (Alice) requires a log in every time the computer was off or in standby. The router is not from the internet provider, we bought it separately and I had enough problems setting it up in the first place. Now, I'm afraid if I change things on my router I might not be able to get an internet connection at all.
The router itself doesn't have a encryption or a password, it looks open.
When I go online on my laptop it first connects to the wi-fi and then I have to connect it to the DSL connection with the password.
Is there any other way I can fix this?

It sounds as though you may have SBC's DSL. IT sucks. Sorry to say this but it is true. Also, check your wireless settings and make sure the port triggering is set correctly. A dynamic IP should not effect the game. You may also want to change the frequency you are operating on if you are surrounded by other prople with networks. WEP security can slow this process as well. If possible, use WPA or WPA2.
    Good luck.
