10.4.8 Intel issues

Disappointed with the update. Sure Safari and other Intel-native programs are definitely faster. However, with the following 2 issues so far:
1. Rosetta is faster too, but now has major bugs with some programs. I have read about the Adobe CS2 issues. However, other programs besides these and databases are affected. I like playing Jinni Zeala pinball game, but now it runs like molasses and is totally unplayable. If this were my only Mac, I wouldn't be too pleased.
2. Often now, my network doesn't connect automatically upon waking from sleep. I have to select it from the Airport menu in the Finder. It NEVER did this before - at least not with me.
I hope Apple tests Leopard thoroughly before release. Roll on 10.4.9 to fix the above!

Hi Federico
Thanks very much. I had figured this out on my own. (My set-up didn't have any WPA2 networks to delete.) However, it still happens after having followed these instructions. For me at least.

  • Audio line-in level too high - an intel issue?

I'd love to hear from anyone who uses their line-in jack to feed in audio; I use mine a lot to digitize old records and tapes.
I've just changed from an eMac G4 to an intel iMac and, using the same audio source (the 'line out' feeds from my home amplifier) connected to the iMac's line-in jack, I'm finding the sound levels are much higher than they used to be. I've checked the Sound Preferences and even with the input volume set at zero, the levels are so high they're almost distorting.
I'm sure this isn't a problem specific to my machine; I've tried my wife's MacBook - also intel - and the same problem occurs.
Having rung Apple Support they say it's not an issue they've come across, so I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone else who has......especially if you're an audio expert!
    Best regards and thanks
    Chris

    Hang on, I'm an idiot...
I've recently put in a new PCI sound card, and I was playing with the input level for that device!
The method in your first post did let me alter the line-in level.
However - here's the problem. I found the level slider was actually right at the bottom. I can now adjust it - but only upwards. So now instead of having a capture that clips the loudest peaks, I can have a capture that clips all the time!
I tried updating the drivers with the ones from NVIDIA's site you linked to, but that did not alter the level of the audio input. (The source is a hi-fi VCR, by the way, and I don't think the output level is particularly high.)
I guess the only way is to put something else in the chain to attenuate the level before feeding it into the line-in?

  • Xorg/Intel, issues. "Fatal Error: No Screens Found" [SOLVED]

I'm using an intel chipset with integrated graphics on an older computer, (old enough that I have to use kms) which worked previously, but didn't after the update. I've already enabled kms, so I ruled that out, if any of you can help, here are my logs:

With the vesa driver specified, it still gives me an error based on the extension "Record" in xorg.

Crap, it didn't work. I tried with the i915 thing on through grub, and is still failed.
The bug in xorg also said that there was a bug with the module 'record' so I removed it completely and tried again, for some reason it still didn't work. With vesa as the driver, I get a black screen, which is the closest to a GUI I've seen in weeks.
Error log - Vesa with 'Record' removed:

  • [SOLVED] Blinking screen - new Xorg and Intel issue

Screen is blinking after opening laptop lid no matter what i did (nothing, lock screen, hibernate, standby). It blinks every 10-20 seconds for about 1-2 seconds, and cpu% used by X's raises from 0.3-1.0 to even 10% and system slows down a little in that moment. My Xorg logs:

Blinking stops when i restart computer.
I have newest xorg and intel drivers (xorg-server 1.7.1.901-2 & xf86-video-intel 2.9.1-1). I tried also downgrade this (and related) packages to older versions (even xorg-server 1.5.* & xf86-video-intel 2.4.*) and the same happens... with only one difference. On that oldest packages I've tried screen doesn't blinks, but the wallpaper of the desktop is changing: my -> default -> my -> default... with the same frequency . I was googling a lot, believe me. I study IT on a University and I asked my friends from there, and they just run out of ideas. In addition i can write that it isn't my laptop fault because windows xp works fine and ubuntu 9.04 (i had before archlinux) also worked good. It has started on ubuntu 9.10, so I thought I move to archlinux, and its still here? I suppose its a problem with intel drivers or xorg, but somehow linked with power management of the monitor(?). But why then older packages don't work? Please, I will be grateful for any help.

SOLVED!!! Must enable KMS => switch off vga option in grub, and replace it with "i915.moduleset=1"

  • Just finished reformating, intel issue.

i just finished reformating the laptop myself thanks to the help I found here and everything seems to be running smoothly BUT when I go to the task bar it shows me the intel icon with a ! icon and it says that the Intel RST service is not running. I remember before that this icon had a green ok mark but i don't really know what it does or how I can fix it. I did the instalation as instructed, didn't press any buttons other than to change the disk and everything. I've only installed messenger and firefox, i hope I  haven't messed up in the process.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Try running windows update and get the drivers in the optional downloads section.
That is the Rapid Storage Technology.  If no updated driver is there, Toshibas site should have one, most likely as part of the chipset driver.

  • Snd-hda-intel issues

I have had problems with sound since I installed linux on this laptop (hp nx6325, ATI SB450 HDA Audio). I was always able to get it working to some point, but...
After turning on my laptop everything works fine, even the microphone, and the speakers mute when I plug in headphones. But after a while my mic stops working, as though it was blocked by something, or it didn't exist. And the speakers won't unmute when I plug out the headphones, or if they weren't plugged in before the speakers won't mute. weird...
I suspect it's a driver bug, and probably I can't do anything about it. I tried almost every possible solution i could find on the net, nothing worked (changing the modul=... etc.), and it seems nobody has exactly these issues.
I'm just curious if there is a workaround, so i won't have to restart my computer every time I want to use skype or unmute the speakers.

My speakers don't mute when I plug headphones in. My solution is to turn the 'front' volume down to zero through alsamixer in the terminal. It doesn't trigger 'mute' but has the same effect. Don't know if this helps but might be worth a go?

  • Hda-intel issues

After some hours of use, this always happens:
hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last cmd=0x018f000a
    hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode: last cmd=0x018f000a
and then the headphone jack won't mute the speakers when I plug it in, so I always have to reload the module to get it working again, I've tried everything, compiling old and new alsa, probe_mask=1 and 8, model=hp/hp-3stack and many more, and NOTHING works, I can't find anything useful on the internet about it, so does anybody have any idea?, it's the only thing that bothers me on linux, my laptop is a hp pavilion dv6000, but I haven't tried it in another linux distro, only arch.
    Please help

    no ideas?
    need more info?
should I post this question in another section?
    It's related to Kernel, right?
    thanks

  • 3945BG Intel Adapter PEAP issue

Hi, We have few SONY laptops with this builtin adapter.. Unfortunately, these adapters do not seem to work when PEAP with WinXP, is used with Cisco APs. TAC has already disowned this issue, saying it is a Intel issue. As we are not getting much of support from our Laptop vendor, i am just curious if anyone has this issue and found any good workaround...
If any third party supplicant can overcome this issue, please provide pointers.. We would like to evaluate before purchasing it..
Well, fyi.. i have upgraded the latest firware on Intel.

Checked this link the SONY only support CCX v3 that part of the PEAP may not work w/ Cisco AP.
    http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/pr46/pr147/partners_pgm_partners_0900aecd800a7907.html
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/765/ccx/versions_and_features.shtml
Better check w/ SONY what is their CCX support ver., or try to use other authentication method....
    Hopes this help.

  • How do I fix an improper migration; and hardware or migration issue?

I have been having screen freezes since I migrated my user account (incorrectly, I now discover) from my G5 to my brand-new, week-old precious ...er 13" Macbook Pro (2.66 processor). Doesn't matter what program I'm in and hardboot is the only way to regain any response (wince) -- the cursor just disappears, no trackpad or keyboard control. (no externals attached, no wireless either once.)
I ran the hardware test from the Applications disk: the short test reports no problems. The extended test froze after 8 minutes but it was on battery; I re-ran the extended test with it plugged in and it froze again on the first pass after 29 minutes. Had to hard-boot it both times; cancel/stop test button would not respond. I figured two freezes was an answer.
First assumption is I have a hardware issue and I need to take it back to the store.
However. When I migrated my user files, I did so without taking advantage of this forum's extensive discussions and with my head in the..er.. clouds about PowerPC to Intel issues. (I've seen several links and tips to the proper way of doing things, now, thanks. And sigh)
But I haven't seen precisely how one is supposed to fix doing it wrong. (Feel free to point me to such a place, my search-fu is not strong today.)
    What I did wrong:
    A. I just brought everything over using migration assistant; settings, software, everything. PowerPC-only software--heck, I might have even brought my old classic stuff in its folder. My third-party firewall and virus protection program (Intego Netbarrier) was apparently also PowerPC only, but it installed and appeared to be running.
    B. I just had to play with my new toy before I migrated, so I did the apparently horrible mistake of creating a FancyNewUser account before migration.
    C. When I migrated, I created a new account (UpdatedUser) for my old G5 account, settings, and information. I have not done anything to try to merge those two accounts and don't see the point; sometimes it's useful to have a separate admin account. (The migration itself, btw, was fantastically smooth.) But of course the applications are available to both accounts.
    D. Oh, I did not repair permissions on the G5 before I migrated, either. *heavy sigh*
Minor note. I never upgraded the firmware on the G5 (it was having the 'sleep' issue) I just never put it to sleep. And it seems to me the laptop is freezing when I try to wake it from sleep. At any rate, the laptop was not freezing prior to the migration.
    So.
    1. Is there a way I (a middle-of-the-road user, not really comfy with terminal or command lines although I've used 'em) can determine if this is a hardware or an OS/software conflict issue?
    2. Clearly I need to fix the migration. What's the best way to go about it? Should I
    a) delete the UpdatedUser account entirely and start over? If so, am I right in thinking that I can:
aa. create a ThirdAccount on my laptop
ab. move the data I want to keep, like my photos and music and word processing files? (I think it was Kerry's tip: out of UpdatedUser's folders>a shared file>ThirdAccount's desktop>ThirdAccount's correct folders)
ac. delete the UpdatedUser account and
ad. perform fresh installs on any software I want on the laptop? (making sure, of course, that it will run on the laptop).
Uh... this skips the step of uninstalling the programs I shouldn't have migrated. I assume I can't run an uninstaller that might have come with these programs, since that, too, would have been compiled for the PowerPC. So what's the best way of getting rid of them?
(It occurs to me I could move the data to the FancyNewUser account without creating a third, but I actually like the idea of having a completely clean new account).
    b) Turn the laptop over to the store, ask them to wipe it and reinstall everything so I can start from scratch?
    c) some other option?
    New machine
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB Memory
    320GB hard drive
    NVIDIA graphics
I'm aware I'm asking a boatload of questions here. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Let's say you just start over and do an Erase & Install and then migrate using this guide:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350
This way you're not dragging over a lot of PPC junk.
I would reinstall all third party apps from their disks.

  • Trouble keeping Server 10.4.8 Intel working with 2003 AD.

I have been trying for a week to get a 10.4.8 MacPro server to stay bound to my 2003 AD network. Using Bombich's doc, items checked off as I go, I can get it to work briefly. Then within an hour suddenly the time zone is wrong and no clients can attach to SMB shares I have created. Quite a few error messages related to Winbindd not being able to fetch the SID for for our domain and log.smbd errors like writesocketdata: write failure. Error = Broken Pipe.
Tried rebinding to no avail. I would love to hear from someone else who can say "oh yeah it works fine for me at work". Is it a hardware (Intel) issue or Xeon, I mean I can read a whitepaper and it works for a while, then nothing. If you know of an updated how-to for an apparent idiot I'd be interested.
(NOTE: Even when the shares don't work I can still see and add AD users and groups in WGM, so I seem to be partially bound, maybe for everything except the SMB shares I need.)
    TIA for any help
    13" Macbook (Black) 2.0 GHz Intel w/ 1.25GB Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have rebuilt the machine multiple times. In several of those times I used the AD server that is the DNS server as well as the Time server, in most recent I pointed both of them to time.apple.com. But there is an odd issue with the Time zone becoming altered by some action that once you see that you know your goobered again. I can no longer get the regular OD functionality to work, the LDAP service cannot even authenticate with itself and is spewing errors. If I weren't between builds and hadn't been up all night I would have posted the console log that contained the errors. I plan on attempting to bind to the root forest domain this time instead of the child domain I have been working with. I will post back with results later. The time server is a critical piece of this working as is DNS.

  • File name not showing up at RIP from Intel Pro

I have both G4 and newer Pro G5 running CS3. If I send an ID file to the RIP from my G4 the file name will appear correctly in the Queue window. If I send an ID file from my newer Pro Intel it shows the printer name (ie 1800) but not the file name. This makes it hard to identify different jobs at the RIP. I've looked at my Print & Fax System preferences and they seem to be the same. Any ideas? Thanks, Roger

    10.4.11 and ID 5.0.2
I just upgraded my G4 to CS3 from CS2 where I had no problem. The G4 has no problem even with CS3. I thought it was probably a CS3 issue until I upgraded, not an Intel issue. I may be wrong.

  • [FIXED] kernel26-lts for Intel driver's conflict with KMS in kernel26

    Hi,
I am running on a GM965/GL960 Intel video card. During the install (and later use) of Arch, I had to add i915.modeset=0 on the kernel line in grub when booting to get to a visible terminal; otherwise I used to get a blank screen after udev loaded. However, taking a leaf from Ubuntu on same laptop (and since most fixes for this issue recommended downgrading the kernel), I installed kernel26-lts. This works quite well with the latest xorg (1.9) and intel driver (2.12.0-3).
    kernel26 - 2.6.35
    kernel26-lts - 2.6.32-23
    1. Are desktop users recommended to use the LTS kernel?
    2. For certain components (Broadcom wi-fi), where I intend to install drivers from the AUR - will they work on LTS kernel?
    3. Is this a good strategy? I intend to keep kernel26 also on my machine and when the Intel issue gets fixed, I will switch back to kernel26.

    1. If it works for you, use it.
    2. There are -lts versions of some packages and compiling others against any supported kernel should be fine.
    3. Seems nice and simple.
You can also try .34 version or the regular kernel.

  • CS2 died on Intel machine, need a fix.

This is my first post on these forums so please let me know if I am missing any info in my post.
So I have a user weho has CS2 thru CS4 on his machine.  He used to be on a PowerMac, one day we updated him to an Intel Mac and migrated all of his Account info over, CS2 included.
Last week he got the CMap error out of nowhere: "Adobe InDesign is missing required system fonts or CMap files.  Please reinstall InDesign."  He had some font issues on his machione so we believe it stemmed from there.
The easy fix is to reinstall inDesign, however, when I tried that, all apps are greyed out.
I wouldn't think this is an Intel issue as I've installed it on Intel machines many times.
So I followed the Unistall process on the Installer Disc and now all it will let me reinstall is GoLive, Photoshop.Imageready and Version Cue.
Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.  Thanks.

    You are in unsupported territory.
You might try a complete uninstall (again) followed by manually cleaning the files as noted here.
Is there a reason that the applications weren't deactivated and installed clean on the new computer (instead of copying them over)?

  • Vista "Problem Reports and Solutions" - Compatibility issues?

The Visa +Problem Reports and Solutions control panel+ is reporting three problems which I cannot seem to be able to find a resolution to.
( So far I've just installed Vista 32 business ed. on my iMac 20". Installed bootcamp drivers, updated bootcamp to 2.1 and applied Vista updates.)
*The Problem Reports and Solutions control panel reports the following:*
    1. Download and install the driver for Apple performance counter
This problem was caused by Apple performance counter, which was created by Apple Inc..
    2. Compatibility issue between Intel 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9 and Windows. This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Intel 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9 and this version of Windows. Intel 82801GBM (ICH7-M) LPC Interface Controller - 27B9 was created by Intel Corporation and is distributed by Apple Inc..
    3. Problem caused by Apple Desktop Null Driver.
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of Windows and Apple Desktop Null Driver. This product is usually distributed by the company that manufactured your device or computer. Note. If you bought Apple Desktop Null Driver from a retailer and installed it yourself, you will need to contact its manufacturer.
Are these genuine, and if so, is there a solution? No solutions are proposed by Vista itself.
    Mac OS 10.5.5 , bootcamp 2.1

A performance counter is not something that is usually in use by any application except by the developers of the unit itself. nothing to be alarmed about (well, except perhaps that it should have been removed).
A null driver is (as the name indicates) null, there is no functionality assigned with it. MS error message is just brilliant "there is an error in your null driver", like what, there is no functionality in a null driver. So no problems there either.
I got the 2 above error messages on the very first generation 17" MBP for ages and so far not seen any impacts in it for my work.
The Intel issue is interesting, it might be a good idea to see if Intel has an updated driver for the problem.

  • Excessive crashing.  Intel?

My brand new Mac Pro G5 crashed once or twice/week for apparently no reason, often when I'm not even using it. My Power Mac G4 maybe crashed 3-4 times over the several years I used it. This crashing is reminicent of my PC days? Intel issue? Here's the report. If anyone can advise me on this, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Run the Apple Hardware Test. That should be your first step.
Most problems can be resolved after that by testing memory (Memtest, try AppleJack which now includes a simpler means); be zeroing a drive; by erase and clean install and carefully install and updates, backups, and watching what you install (one at a time in some cases).
USB devices can also cause kernel panics.
Make sure you repair the drive and don't let the filesystem and directory become corrupt and just lead to an escalation of problems and corrupt files and preferences (in case the system was writing at the time).
If you used Migration Assistant to bring stuff from G5 or G4, that can cause problems on its own (though usually not kp's).
As long as you aren't seeing any ECC errors, hopefully it isn't memory related.
