10.4.8 - suddenly my scanner program "Vuescan" won't start up

I have and Epson Expression 836XL (large format, flatbed scanner) and have been using it for over 2 years with no problems. I use Hamrick's Vuescan to run it since Epson refused to update drivers for this older model scanner. I was using it on the day that the 10.4.8 update came out with no problems whatsoever. Then I installed the update, restarted at least 4 or 5 times, and ever since the update Vuescan won't start. I click on the program's icon, I get the little start up window for the program and then I get the spinning rainbow wheel of death.
I have repaired all permissions on all of my hard drives, verified them all, and still no change. The scanner connects to the mac via a scsi to firewire converter. Could this have something to do with it? My instinct is to say no since it's the program itself that is getting hung. I would think that might be it if the program started and then didn't recongnize the scanner, but that's not the case. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? By the way, I'm NOT on an intel based mac.

I installed the recent software update 10.4.8 through the software update mode. Previously I was using Photoshop Elements 3 to scan items with my Epson 2450 Precision Photo FireWire scanner-- and had absolutely no problem with my scanner accessing it through PhotoShop Elements 3 when using Mac OS 10.4.7.
Now I can not scan a thing. I go to Photoshop Elements and when I import a Twain or Epson 25450 Scan, Photoshop Elements 3 can not find the scanner.
I worked with the Epson People at a charge and now they tell me that there is something wrong with the scanner. The green LED keeps on blinking when I turn the power switch on and it should stop after a while indicating the scanner is ready to scan.
I have removed and reinstalled the scanner software several times and even removed it from my Mac OS 9 system--just in case that was the issue.
I am really frustrated now--
I called AppleCare and they told me they do not support issues with upgrades.
I think there is indeed something wrong here.
Any suggestions.

  • Sudden loss of video, computer won't start up afterwards

    Hi, i've recently been experiencing sudden video loss and/or shutdown on my ibook. It always happens when I'm running on the battery, even if it's charged. I've tried resetting the PMU, but it didn't change anything. I just bought this battery 4 months ago. After it shuts down, I can't get the computer to open, even if it's plugged, with or without battery. After about twenty minutes, I usually can open it again. I don't get any warning and there always at least an hour left on the battery. What is happening, and what can I do ? Thanks,

    My 4 year old iBook has just developed the exact same problem.
    If I wait long enough it will start, but first you hear the
    PRAM reset tone and when it's up the clock says it's 1969.
    I am wondering if a new PRAM clock battery will solve my problem and perhaps yours. Anyone out there have some advice?
    Will a computer shut down after a few minutes if the PRAM battery is dead even if it's on the AC power supply?

    Well, the computer stopped starting up at all. It could never find the operating system. I tried safe mode and virtually every other non-standard start-up option. I then did target disk mode with another MBP and got the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I then tried using disk utility and it couldn't retrieve retrieve the data using restore (writing to an external drive). I suspect that this means the hard drive would need to be replaced. In your expert opinions, is this necessarily true? Could this still be just a software problem, or perhaps some other piece of hardware?
    Part of the reason I ask is that this laptop is now nearly five years old. It's needed a new battery for two years. If it's a virtual certainty that the hard drive is toast, I don't want to pay $150 for someone to take it out and try to recover any remaining data from it, only to reveal that the data is indeed irretrievable (since the computer itself is probably only worth $300-400 at this point). The nearest Genius Bar is also more than 2 hours away. Am I going about this the right way by using disk utility, given that the hard drive won't mount to the desktop of the other computer? If the hard drive can't be reat in target disk mode, does that confirm that it is the hard drive?

    Oh also, it does still make the startup noise, even though I can't run the AHT since I can't get it to start up in safemode. I thought this mean that it passing various hardware tests. Does this not apply to the hard drive?

    I cant seam to find a cli scanner program capable of scanning multiple pages and save it as pdf. Am I blind and stupid? Is there really no options for scanning from commandline?

    Hey all, hopefully someone can help me out.
    My iPod was working perfectly up until an hour ago, and for some reason won't start up again. I've looked at the various tips, holding the power button for 10 seconds, but it still won't start up. Help would be greatly appreciated!

    I have the same problem. I bought it 5 months ago, and just used it when I was at home. I take very good care of it. No accidental damage or misuse. But it suddenly can not start up. So I sent my ipod touch to Apple store. To my disappointed, they can not do anything.They do not want to take their responsibility.

    Prior that the powerbook also couldn't start but I could see the Apple logo, so via fire-wire (holding T at start up) I backed up the hard disk.
    Check via DiskToolPro the structure, defragmented. Via DiskWarrior rebuild the directory
    and finally not been able to access the drive I reformatted the drive via fire-wire drive.
    Re-started the powerbook holding C to boot up from DVD - nothing
    Re-started again and it give me one long beep and black screen. An indication that my 1gig RAM is bad or gone (?) and the DVD is stuck inside.
    Bought new one 1 gig, installed it and now I'm getting only three beeps.
    I tried all, changed the slots several times and nothing.
    I tried more as:
                             c -- to boot from CD (again while the DVD is still inside and I cannot get it out)
                             cmd-opt-p-r -- to Zap the PRAM,
                             cmd-opt-n-v -- to clear NV RAM,
                             cmd-opt-o-f -- to boot into open firmware … and nothing. The DVD is in and I have 
                                                    black screen with three beeps and flashing LED.
    Do I have to replace the Logic Board?   (Anyone has a spare one ?)
    But it is the faulty Logic board?
    Could anyone help me out? Please.
    I'm retired and I cannot afford a new laptop - and this powerbook was a great, great horse for me until that horrible set of three beeps.

    There was a known issue with LBs in 15-inch PowerBooks with 1.5 and 1.67Ghz processors in which one RAM slot would fail. There once was a repair extension program that fixed the problem at no cost, but it is long-expired.
    The problem with seeking a used logic board for these models is that so many had their boards replaced that it increases the chances of the boards in the used/pulled markets having the same problem you have now. The replacement program also came close to exhausting the supply of new boards,
    If it turns out to be a bad LB and you can't find a replacement, consider how used computer pricing works: A used computer is worth hugely more in parts than if bought as a working unit. I.E, you can probably find a working PowerBook that will cost less than the logic bard alone. It also possible to find a used MacBook Pro for less that a replacement LB.

    Click on the blue Internet Recovery in nbar's post. That is a link to what computers can run Internet Recovery.
    Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

    When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • How do you stop Audigy programs from loading at start

    I posted yesterday regarding my sound card (Audigy 2 ZS Platinum) taking up a large amount of CPU.
    I went into my BIOS and basically assigned every free IRQ to my PCI cards and yet again changed the slot that the card sits on. Everything is back to normal and I think I might know why, which is where my question comes in.
    Thankfully, XP allows me to use the card without rebooting. If I do reboot, I have a feeling 3 things will happen.
    . A pop up window will appear at the top of my screen that allows me to control certain aspects of the card.
    2. A program will appear in my task bar (white with blue headphones) which allows me to run Creative Programs.
    3. My CPU will jack up again.
    Because I didn't have to reboot when i re-installed the card, these two programs are not running.
    My question is, how do I stop those two programs from loading at start up? I've closed them down in the past after a reboot and it does not help, so obviously something is loading with them.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at Apple to have the device checked. Sounds like you may have a hardware problem.

    That would indicate a network issue.
    Reboot ATV and router
    Make sure DNS is set to auto
    Ensure router is up to date, if on wifi try ethernet
    Go to istumbler.net to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise

    That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
    XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
    Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
    Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
    Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
    Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
