10.4.8 Update on G5 2Ghz

Hi,
I just did an update on my G5 2Ghz to 10.4.8 from 10.4.7 and now I can't get to my login screen! I am getting "Darwin/BSD (username) (console) and then login:
I type my login and password and I get /Users/username\> . What am I supposed to do? Please help me.
Thanks,
Reha

I understand, good point, but he usually takes it
with him on trips in cases like this he will still be
able to do something...I can either wait until he
comes back or buy a new disk i suppose...
Laptops cause that sort of problems even for a single user. Do you take the install disks with you and risk losing them, or leave the at home and not have the when needed.
A G4 install disk will not work on a G5, but the system it installed on the G4 might.
You can see if a copy of the G4 laptop system would work on your G5 by putting the G4 in target disk mode (Start with "T" held down), then connect the G5 and G4 with a FireWire cable. Boot the G5 with Option held down. Select the G4 disk and click on the straight right-pointing arrow. If it works, then it would be worth trying to copy the G4 system onto the G5 disk. You won't be able to use Disk Utility because you don't have a Tiger version on an optical disk, and you can't use the one on the G4 because you can't copy from the system you are running. You should be able to to it if you install Carbon Copy Cloner
<http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html> or SuperDuper!
<http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/> on the G4 and put the G5 in Target Disk Mode.
Before doing any system copy, use the G4 to copy any user files from the G5. A clone operation will make the G5 disk like the G4 disk. Any user files not on the G$ would be lost.

  • Changing Processor for Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5

    Hello.
Is it possible to update my Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 to an Intel or other processor?  Of course, I'm finding that my machine is not being supported by software developers anymore, which is very frustrating. I've got a great machine that I love, but it needs to have a future!
What are my options?  Thanks in advance to all you for your help.
I'm running 10.5.8 on my Power Mac (June 2004).

    No upgrade path at all.
    No way, no how.
The only way to get Intel processors is to buy a new machine that uses them.

  • RAM issues under OSX ML

I updated my MBP (2GHZ i7, 8GB RAM) to OSX ML 10.8.2 some weeks ago. Now I recognized that my system stats say I only had 4GB RAM (2x2GB instead of 2x4GB before) installed. Did somebody have the same issue???

It may be that one of the RAM chips is not being recognized.
What exact model MBP do you have?
What are the RAM specifications of the new RAM?
Switch the two RAM chips and what are the results?
If you have the old RAM, install that and what are the results?
    Ciao.

  • Success with iDefrag and DiskWarrior on my Intel iMac! (indirectly)

Had some very good success using iDefrag and DiskWarrior on my intel iMac, both of which do not run directly on the intel platform yet. As I had observed a gradual (modest) slow-down over the course of the past month since I got my iMac, I couldn't help but try to figure out a way to defrag and optimize the hard drive since I had over 125GB (including quite a few large media files, and a couple system updates, both of which tend to cause fragmentation). So, after doing two independent backups on separate external HD's, I ran iDefrag on my iBook and defrag/optimized the iMac's hard drive using Target Disk Mode. As expected, the hd was VERY fragmented - and the process took overnight to complete. Being as careful as possible to ensure no problems, I then ran verify disk and repair permissions on the iMac's hard drive, and no problem. Did notice a very meaningful increase in responsiveness and speed on the iMac, even more than I would have expected. Since I historically always ran DiskWarrior after doing this exercise on my PPC mac's, I decided to attempt the same here. Since I (and others on this board) have been unsuccessful in running DW3.03 using the iMac in Target Disk Mode, I decided to update backup drive #1 post-iDefrag, and was then able to mount this drive (backup#1) and run DiskWarrior on it from the iBook. No problems were detected which was great news, but the I had it write the new index/directory files. I then sync'd back to my iMac's hard drive (from backup#1 to iMac HD) and observed that a number of files were updated most likely as a result of the updated directory/index files from running DW (I use FolderSynchronizer to sync). So keeping backup#2 of the pre-iDefrag/DiskWarrior for a while, but so far so good, and a very meaningful improvement in performance. So the experiment seems to be a success.
DISLAIMERS: If anyone does "try this at home" please backup and re-backup before attempting. In addition, please note that Coriolis is in the process of developing an intel build for iDefrag and probably recommended in general to wait for this update.

Thanks for this posting and the good advice.  I put in some time chasing the 801.57 gb limit before finding this thread that steers in the direction I see now I must persue, a new enclosure (modern day version rather than 5 year old technology -- yes, the old external drive has the Oxford chipset mentioned repeatedly in other threads) to go with my new drive.  Would have been better off $$-wise to have purchased a complete unit, but this is so much more fun on a Monday evening.
Great being here with you all!

  • 1.83GHz MacBook Pro

I am the proud owner of a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro. I bought it almost exactly 60 days ago, and despite it's heat issues it's been great. Not only did it work great, it was wonderful knowing that I had one of the best laptops on the market. And while that still may be true, my model is now a bit out of date. Not too long ago, the 1.83GHz model was removed from the line to be updated to a 2GHz CPU. Essentially, it was revised.
While talking to a friend via iChat tonight, he mentioned that when Apple does minor revisions, such as the 1.83GHz jump to 2GHz, Apple will update your system for no charge. Is this true? Would Apple do this for the 1.83GHz MBPs? If so, how should I go to get mine upgraded? Should I simply call my AppleCare, or do I need to drive a province over to the Apple Store? If anyone knows any information on this it would be very helpful...
And if they won't do this, why wouldn't they? Apple seems to update their products very often, a bit too often if you ask me. Not offering an upgrade to those customers who would like it is like a software developer moving his software from version 1.5.2 to 1.5.3 with only minor security fixes, and charging current users over again. If it's not possible that would definatly be a nice thing to have.

Well, sorry but my opinion is that your friend is mistaken. Unfortunately, you can't call up Apple whenever they revise their product line and have them replace the machine that you just bought 1 day/week/month/year ago (unless its within the 14-day return period and you bring it back for a refund and then turn around and buy a revised one), unless its defective and you have it exchanged and luckily receive a newer computer. Buying a computer is just like buying a car or any other type of appliance or any other product for that matter. Technology is constantly evolving and it would be unfair to expect Apple or any other computer manufacturer to constantly exchange old hardware for new hardware (for free) as it is released/revised. Have you ever bought something and then been able to exchange it when its upgrade came along? Besides, the speed jump is ever-so-slight and unless you're doing CPU-intensive tasks, the difference will be negligable.
Just be glad that we're at 1.83GHz clocks and not at 1.67. Remember, the 1.83GHz speed itself was a last-second gift from Apple so we should all be thankful for that!

  • E545 Dual Band WiFi supported (authorized) whitelisted cards

    Hi,
I want to update the original 2ghz single band card to a dual band capable card.
But due to the whitelisting restrictions I need to know what card would be accepted.
    Does anyone know?

    Hey there guys,
Jccheng, the ThinkPad a/b/g/n Wireless & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 ABGN & BT 4.0) is a dual band adapter that is compatible and comes as upgrade with the ThinkPad Twist s230u. The 802.11a only runs on a 5Ghz Frequency, and the 802.11n can run on either. I have listed all the adapter options with part numbers below:
    04W3763 Cybertan BCM43228+BCM20702 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 Combo (ThinkPad a/b/g/n)
    04W3764 Liteon BCM43228+BCM20702 abgn WLAN & BT 4.0 Combo (ThinkPad a/b/g/n)
    04W3765 Intel 2x2 11bgn + BT4.0 Combo Jackson Peak1 (Centrino 2230)
As an option, you can call the Lenovo Contact Center, 1-800-426-7378, for a Parts Only order. Hope this helps!

  • Much Higher Temps after 10.5.2 Update! Help, SR 2.2GHz MBP

After installing 10.5.2 this afternoon, I've noticed my SR 2.2GHz MBP is running at about 120F instead of it's usual 90F or less. I've also heard another user on a different site say this. It's been several hours since update (no finder or spotlight indexing) and I'm trying to figure out what it wrong. I have a little fan blowing cold air on to my computer now to try to keep it cool, because heat killed my iBook and I want my MBP as cool as possible.
    Thanks in advance!!

Did you ever check Activity Monitor? It is in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Open it and under "Window" in the menu bar select "Activity Monitor". Select "All Processes" at the top. The bottom two CPU Usage boxes should be mostly black if you aren't doing much. If you see a lot of red or green, you have something running that is hogging the CPU. Scroll down the CPU column and see if you can find something using 80%-99% of the CPU. If so, highlight it and quit it by clicking on the red stop sign icon at the top. Printers sometimes hang and cause this. I had Software Update hang on my Mac. If you can find and kill the process, it should allow things to return to normal.
I also did the update to 10.5.2 and several others since and did not experience this problem.
    Good luck!

You do realise that you can add Ram, if that is all that is holding you back it's not a problem.
Tell me the exact model and age of your Mac. (The model identifier can be found by holding the option key down and clicking on the Apple Menu, select System Information (top entry) and then read the model identifier from the righthand panel (2nd entry down)

If you want to clean up your hard drive some, here are some of my tips, also.
Hard drive getting full or near full?
Do a search for and downlaod and install OmniDisk Sweeper and OnyX.
Here are some of my tips for deleting or archiving data off of your internal hard
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save to disc, Flash drive/s or to ext. hard drive.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Also, if you save old downloaded  .dmg application installer  files, you can either archive and delete these or just delete the ones you think you'll never install, again.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be thinned out, moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc, Flash drive or ext. hard drive and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • I have a 2007 MacBook 2GHz intel core 2 duo and i want to update to either snow leopard or lion what can ido if i have 10.4 already.

I have a 2007 MacBook 2GHz intel core 2 duo and i want to update to either snow leopard or lion what can ido if i have 10.4 already. please help

You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/   I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.
Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a model 2,1 MacBook. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • 2GHz Macbook - no issues after SMC Update!

I purchased my Macbook on Friday and immediatley updated the firmware, as well as all other updates. I installed bootcamp and successfully installed Windows XP. I have used it non-stop all weekend without issue. All morning I have been ripping DVD's with Handbrake and Temperature Monitor reports CPU at 35 degrees and holding steady. I have read many posts here in the discussion boards concerning several issues related to the SMC update and rebooting issues. I have had no such issue. I did notice that my SMC firmware was already at version 1.4f8 out of the box. I wonder if the booting and heat issues are related to earlier versions of the logic board.
I do have several observations related to my new Macbook after considerable use for 3 days:
    1. I do hear the CPU fan kick in when I am ripping DVD's. It is not, however, so loud as to annoy me. On any other occassion doing regular stuff I do not hear the fan at all.
    2. The heat coming off the bottom left back corner is VERY hot. I am not able to lay the notebook on my lap with any degree of comfort at all. I see now why Apple says that it is a notebook as opposed to a laptop
    3. My new Macbook rips DVD's just as fast as my dual core AMD Windows mcachine using Handbrake. I built my own Windows machine with a dual core AMD 4200 with 2 Western Digital Raptor HDD in RAID 0 and cannot rip DVD's faster than my Macbook! - This surprised me to no end.
I am very happy with my purchase. I thought that I would kick myself for paying the premium price for the black finish, however, now that I have it home I can honestly say that it is worth the extra $150. It is such a beautiful piece of technology. I do plan on adding 2gig of RAM from New Egg and probably will install a 7200rpm HDD at some point.
Thanks to all the people in the Apple community who help Windows people like myself make the transition!

Just so you know, the Firmware update is designed to upgrade from version 1.4f8 to 1.4f10 according to Apple: "After this update has completed successfully, your SMC Version will be: 1.4f10." Check out the site. Although, maybe you don't need to update. I did and found an improvement. My Macbook is week 24

  • MBP 2GHZ: Updated to 10.4.7 wit PPC update!!!!!

My system has been update with the PPC update!
The download has been 64Mb (PPC) and the instalation failed.
Now, my system runs slow, the system thinks that it is a 10.4.7 OSX, but you don't see the update 10.4.7 on "installed updates".
    Any idea??
    A bomb???

hmm no. in my auto software update it says "Mac OS X
    Update (Intel) 10.4.7 64.9MB"
    i'm installing it now.
I'm currently updating my G5 tower. It says "MacOSX Update(PPC)" and weighs in at 39.8 MB.

  • Dual G5 2Ghz - won't reboot after security update.

I installed today's security update on my G5 tower, and after reboot I get nothing but revving fans after 30 seconds or so. Just the grey screen with the apple logo.
I've reset the nvram and pram to no avail.
    Boo.
    MBP Duo 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I had to run to dinner... left you kind of hanging ;-(
I was afraid that you were still using your drive (and downloading files etc) while it was in a "precarious" state (thin ice, and jumping up and down to see how thin or thick the ice is... ).
Should always work from another disk drive.
Even if Disk Warrior repairs you want to try to backup files you need first. And it can help to trash stuff that you don't need, easy to replace. Sort of "peel an onion" tearing away the latest additions and working backward (in time to older files) to "undo" changes to the drive and directory.
There are some programs that will force a system to always boot into single user mode or verbose mode. I think Onyx and Cocktail, probably Tiger Cache Cleaner as well.
My feeling is that if there are problems, I avoid the Archive & Install entirely. I much prefer the ERASE with ZERO-ALL and restore from backups. Lacking that, full clean install. Backup along that way.
Backup or clone when you have the system installed.
When it has been updated to latest Apple version and patches.
Again when you have your essential programs installed.
And repair permissions as you go.
A system only takes up 15-45GB so you can even backup to a disk image (sparseimage is best).
You should be working from another drive now. FireWire or internal SATA.
And if you want to "wing it" and feel prepared, I would run the 10.4.9 standalone combo update.
Some thoughts about disk repairs and Disk Warrior:
Backup (SuperDuper) to another drive first if possible.
Boot from that (free to do full copies) and make sure it works.
Always a "bad idea" to repair a drive w/o backups.
You always want to have current set of backup(s).
Run Disk Warrior from hard drive, not from CD.
Often, just the process of cloning a drive is enough.
Run Disk Warrior against the new clone backup.
Disk Warrior is good preventative maintenance and best choice when it gets beyond that to needing to repair a drive.
So first - have a couple backups. And second - buy SuperDuper ($29) so you can do faster smart updates regularly (rotate your backup set) - and finally Disk Warrior.
I've found Disk Warrior finds and fixes things that Disk Utility misses that can help. And SuperDuper is super easy and reliable.
And just because Disk Warrior (or any disk repair) "fixes" a drive doesn't mean you may not have the contents of files that are corrupt.
You don't use Disk Warrior after reformatting, you use it to rebuild the disk's directory (or catalogue).
DW can also check for drive's status and show how many spare blocks are left, in use, or attempts to reallocate. It does not show read errors or soft errors, but it shows overall SMART status.
Disk Warrior is a "one trick" (rebuilt directory) but it does an excellent job and checks some other area's of the filesystem.
