10.4.8 - Wake-up from sleep issue: Workaround

I eventually got rid of wake up from sleep issues on my PB G4, which I had systematically experienced since I upgraded to 10.4.8.
Here is a workaround for those who have customized their EnergySaver:
- the display and the computer must not go idle at the same time ; just select different timeouts.
For those whom it may help.
MacBook Pro - PowerBook G4 - iBook G3 - iBook G4 - iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Actually, another workaround seems to work much better when my PB's display a black screen after wake-up from sleep :
- close the lid
- wait for a few seconds
- re-open the lid.

  • The wake from sleep issues

My problems have been a couple of freezes, one boot from sleep, but a UPS overload almost every time I wake up the machine. APC RS1500, nothing connected but the late 2008 Mac Pro and the monitor. Never happens on a cold boot. I figure this has to be just another wake from sleep issue. Among us on this forum we have tried everything but burning incense and waving chicken feet, to no avail. Surely people at Apple are using this computer too and are aware of our problem. After all, it is a pretty obvious problem. My plan is to keep the faith but not hold my breath. Meanwhile, if any of us actually comes up with a solution, I would be very glad to hear it.

    My new MacPro 8-core 2.8GHz (early 2008),
running 10.5.2 with all available updates,
every time restarts when coming back from sleep.
AppleCare Second-Level-Support knows about the problem,
as you can "read beetween the lines", when you talk to them,
but is not allowed to admit it,
because otherwise, thousands of MacPro customers
would be eligible to return their Mac to Apple ...
My advice for the time beeing:
Don't send your MacPro to sleep!
Wait for a firmware-upgrade that will solve the issue.
BUT - call AppleCare (and your dealer) OFTEN,
so that they FEEL the pressure of unsatisfied customers!!!
But also, don't waste your time (and theirs),
doing what they want you to do with your machine,
    to solve the problem,
because this is only said to calm you down!!!
    Wait for the firmware-upgrade!

  • Thinkpad X220 X230 wake from sleep issues??

I am looking to buy either an X220 or X230 Thinkpad laptop and have been reading the forums here for information about wake from sleep issues for these two machines. I have found a lot on the X220 - seems to be a common problem, so I am now thinking that isn't going to be my choice.
My questions for those who may have experienced this with an X230:
-is the wake from sleep a common issue with the X230 laptop?
-is this more of a SSD issue than a regular HHD?
-is this related to the amount of RAM installed?
-is this more of a Win 7 issue? If so, any version that is more susceptible?
I had an HP laptop that finally was unusable due to this issue and want to avoid that with a new laptop. I really like the features and size of the x230 - and that I can still get Win 7.
Any input on how often the X230 has this type of issue - and any solutions that have worked - would be greatly appreciated, as I really am reluctant to have history repeated with this wake from sleep issue.
    Thanks!

I've got a similar problem. For years, and through many OS & security updates, before going to bed I've been setting both Energy Saver settings to 3 minutes and then rebooting. The computer slept nicely until I hit "Return" in the morning. Lately hitting Return only wakes it up after the first night, the second reboot reacts in a couple of ways:
    1. The computer won't sleep, but the USB shuts off.
    2. The following morning the computer wakes up but the USB and the monitor doesn't.
The only way to deal with this is to hold the power button down until the machine shuts down. Clearly, something is not right. The Mac needs to be shut down after only one reboot. If it's not shut down it won't sleep.

  • My MacBook pro wont wake up from sleep. The screen is blank at all times, but I can hear the fan for 5 sec then everything stops. Please help! I don't kno what to do.

My MacBook pro is about 3 yrs old. It is a 2008 model right before the new design came out. Recently I closed it up which puts it to sleep and a couple minutes later when I opened it up the screen stayed blank but could hear the fan running but then the power clicked like it was shutting down and I could hear nothing more. My power supply is working and I have already tried resetting it. Can anyone help me? I don't live exactly near a Mac store to get help.

Before resorting to an LB change-out, try this, as it has fixed many of the "silver-key" Macbook Pros with wake-from-sleep issues:
    1) To get the computer running, do an SMC reset. Instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Your MBP model uses the first option under the subhead, "Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)"
    2) If you get it running, go to System Preferences > Network and select your Airport connection
    3) In the result main pane, click the "Advanced..." button.
    4) You should be looking at a window with multiple tabs at the top; the "Airport" tab (far left) should be active---if not, make it so.
    5) There is a panel showing "Prefered Networks." Use the "minus" button below that window to eliminate any networks that you don't need to access on more than a weekly basis. I'm down to two: the home Airport Extreme Base Station and the network for a museum at which I volunteer once a week.
    5) Click "OK" and close System Preferences.
Now try letting it sleep and see it if wakes up.
When this happened to my Late 2007 MBP, I used Console to read system.log and found that, on waking, the compuer was looking for the wireless network at a lodge where I'd stayed weeks earlier and miles away. Clear the morass of old networks and keeping the list short has completely cured my wake-from-sleep issues.
The steps I listed take less time to do than to read, and are within the ability even of novice Mac users.
If that doesn't work, you may need to seek professional help. If you take it to an Apple Store and they recommend a logic board replacement, ask about a "Depot Repair." Instead of replacing the logic board on-site (which will whack you to the tune of US$700-1100), they send the computer to a central Apple refurb facility that fixes whatever they find wrong for a flat fee of about US$315 (last time someone reported using the service here). Turnaround is about one working week, and people who have taken of this service have reported being very pleased with the outcome.

  • Waking from sleep issues

Hi, I have a 17" G-5 i-sight imac, running os 10.4.8, and have been having wake from sleep issues similar to what others have posted. These first showed up in late August. About 25 % of the time, when waking the computer from sleep the screen remains black, and after about 10 seconds the fan starts running at full speed, The only way to stop this is to hold in the power key until the computer shuts down, and then restart. What's interesting is that this only seems to happen using my apple wireless keyboard and mouse; when using a usb keyboard and mouse there is no problem. Could this be a bluetooth-related problem? The bluetooth settings are all correct (allow bluetooth device to wake computer, etc). The apple care guy basically said he didn't know how to help me, and it's driving me crazy! The only wired keyboard/mouse I have is from my 233 bondi blue imac, so just using that to avoid the problem is not a good option. Please help!

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!

  • After 10.9.3 update monitor doesn't wake up from sleep

I have an LCD connected to the Mac Mini via a mini-DP to DVI adapter and a video projector is connected directly at the HDMI.
The LCD is the "main" screen while the projector is only switched on for watching TV or movies.
My "Computer sleep" is set to "never" and "display sleep" to 15min.
All was working well until I updated to 10.9.3 ...
Now, when the LCD goes to sleep (projector is powered off) it doesn't wake up any more.
The computer is running and it is responding to my key-presses etc. but the monitor remains in a coma.
Powering the monitor off and on again resolves the issue, e.g. the display shows correctly.
This is however only a temporary fix as it refuses to wake up  upon the next sleep...
The monitor itself is fine, it works on other systems flawlessly, e.g. on an older Mini.
    Any ideas?
I have already force-fed it with the combo-udate but that didn't help.

My iphone 3GS does the same thing, not only does it suddenly fail to wake up from sleep. It just crashes and I have to do a hard reset. Today it just turned off when the ipod was playing I was a mile away from it and it was in airplane mode as well. I have restored from backup once and would dearly love to have it downgraded but that doesn't seem to be much of an option. My phone ran like a dream before the upgrade....now I hate to say it but its completely unreliable.
With so many people experiencing the same problem it makes me wonder why there isn't a fix.

  • IMac G5 iSight will not wake up from sleep

This has been happening to me for some time.
Occasionally my Mac do not wakes up from sleep. Instead it hangs!
    Here how it goes:
I press a key on keyboard; my Mac wakes up, but screen remains black with only mouse pointer. I cannot see login window.
And Mac stays this way for hours. No matter if I press a key, click a mouse.
The only remedy is to press power button and to shut it down.
Then I have checked console.log. Nothing spectacular. Here is log from last accident:

Wait - before you take it in for repair or get put on hold with Support try this:
Go to System Prefs, Energy Saver, then set your display sleep and computer sleep times the same. Check both check boxes too.
Trust me, I've been working on this problem with Apple and checking the discussion boards for over a year now. I've had my logic board replaced, power supply replaced, been through about 8 Apple techs and tried just about anything you'll read on these boards or get told to do by a tech. If you notice about every 4th or 5th page has someone posting about this problem. The above suggestion is the most recent thing I tried (from reading posts here in this forum, not from an Apple Tech) and it has come out of sleep for the past 30+ tries without a problem. This is not to say this is IT(the final sovle), because it has been known to go on a good run for a week or so and then come up again. This 'fix' however, has been the most promising. If it continues to work, I will let Apple know and hopefully they can fix the bug. They have all sorts of case history with me on this problem.

  • IPhone 5 won't wake up from sleep/standby!!

Hello, I am having a really strange problem with my iphone 5 for last 3-4 months. Sometime when i want to use my iphone from standby/sleep mode it dosent do anything! sleep/wake button, home button even silent/sound button dosent work. I know the silent/sound button dosen't work cause normally it vibrate when I turn it on. So the problem is my phone wont wake up from sleep/standby mode. The screen stays black and nothing works. If i press the home button and power button for 10-15 time very quickly, then it takes a screen shot and wakes up!! Sometime it stays in this stage for 5-10min.
So here is what i did to solve the problem.
    1. I restore the phone from phone and ituens.
    2. I delete all icloud backup and started as a new phone
    3. I went to apple store and replace the phone with a new one!!
    4. I jailbreak it at last to see if it solve the problem!
    5. turn off the icloud to see if it works
And sadly nothing of all this solved my problem! Now im not sure any specific app causing the problem but it almost impossible to find it out. So if anyone have any similar problem or any suggestion to solve it, then it will be really helpful.

    Hi All,
I hope I don't jinx it by posting this.  Yesterday I changed two of my settings and the issue has not occured again.
I changed the carriers settings and the LTE settings.
I went into "Settings" - then went into "Carrier" - Then I switched the "Automatic" to "OFF" I waited for the the carrier to show up (in my case Vodafone), then selected "vodafone au" manually.
Then I went into "Settings" - Then went into "General" - then I switched OFF the "Enable LTE" option (In my case I have switched this option OFF as I have not been sent the message to advise that I now have 4G service. According to Vodafone support, Not all vodafone customers have 4G only a selected 40 thousand customers accross Australia, I think all customers will have 4G around mid July )
Once this is done, I switched the phone off, Waited around a minute and then switched the phone back on.
I will update in a week if the problem doesn't happen.

  • Thunderbolt ethernet not working when computer wake up from sleep.

thunderbolt ethernet not working when computer wake up from sleep.
it will not happen in Mountain loin.

I had this problem on SL and on Lion as well, and it occures for WiFi and Ethernet connections.
In fact the internet connection was not broken as I could ping the destination usin the IP (not DNS name).
In this case the problem was related to mDNSResponder task which handles all dns queries.
It was the most frequent problem in my day to day work with SL and now Lion. It was never fixed by any patch from Apple. I tried almost all voodoo including fresh install, all possible config changes - no solution.
The only version with no problems related to network was 10.5.8. All the other versions had issues of different kind (WiFi instability (lost signal), DNS problems (for wireless and wired connection) sometimes associated with machine sleep and wake up and sometimes with no reason.
QUESTION: Is your problem independent of the access point / router you connect to.
I must say networking was (and still is) the weakest part, besides the other OS X weaknesses I experienced during 4 years of OS X usage.
No problems in the same network with Linux or Windows beeing ran natively on my iMac So hardware is OK.
Software is of poor quality. Not much more to say in this matter.
I found a very interesting article dated 1996 about programming which I think is still valid.

  • T400 - Fn Key wakes computer from sleep.

So, is it normal that by pressing Fn Key + any other key (on the keyboard) - computer wakes up from sleep??
Or is something wrong with the OS?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Actually, the Fn key alone should wake the machine from Sleep/Standby.
    Nothing wrong with the OS.

  • MacBook wont wake up from sleep, shuts down randomly, and won't burn. . .

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 from Tiger (and also purchased and installed Office Mac 2008), it will not wake up from sleep. If I close it while it is still awake, (which I normally would without problems before I upgraded) it will not wake up when I open it; the screen just stays black and I have to use the power button to restart it. This also happens when it falls asleep naturally after being on screen saver. It is a really big annoyance and I know that it must be damaging my computer.
Also, now it will randomly shut down if it does not have the power adapter plugged in, which never happened before.
ALSO, my CD burn attempts will fail midway and say "medium write error".
Can my computer not handle all of the new software I put on it or something? I feel as though it's slowly deteriorating, and it's not even 2 years old. Do I need to buy more memory or disk space? I am really clueless as to how to fix these problems. I'm only 16 and really can't afford to spend money on getting it looked at, so PLEASE help

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
You need to give us more info about your computer: RAM, speed, HD size, freespace etc.
Look at the activity monitor and console logs for potential issues.
Normally a computer will run faster and better with Leopard.
You need to take inventory of any Tiger apps that are not Leopard compatible that may be problematic. Also check what items you have in your login pane.
Have you recently run the disk utility and repaired HD and permissions?

  • My iMac will not wake up from sleep after upgrading to OS X Mavericks

After upgrading to OS X, my iMac will not wake up from sleep.  Each time I have to do a hard restart.  Is there a fix for this problem?

    Hi,
I have just had the same problem with my iMac and after upgrading to Mavericks my iMac would not wake without pressing the power off button and re-booting.
Anyway, I have since done a complete new install on my iMac and have gone 5 days without an issue with the iMac not waking.  It was a bit of a pain to do but my own view so far is that the problem is linked to the upgrading of the OS instead of a clean install.
My iMac now flies with a new OS installed instead of an upgrade.

  • After installing iCloud mac does not wake up from sleep

I have all of the necessary components and software for running iCloud however my computer will not wake up from sleep. I only get the gray sceen.  Any ideas?????

You shouldn't need software (other than Lion).
I'd reboot it and see if that gets around the issue.  It isn't supposed to do that.
Press and hold the power button until the Macbook reboots.

  • Maverick will not wake up from sleep

Maverick will not wake up from sleep. i dont see any related issues. maybe i am the only one? Ive been trying to run maverick for the last 2 months. I thought everything was fine after I erased, reformated and partitioned the HD and installed Maverick on a clean drive......  and then i get the ? startup disk. And then when it does run, I cant let it go to sleep. It will not wake up from sleep. I get the spinning beach ball of death everytime. I leave my computer on and run to the grocery store and come back........ I have to shut my computer off from the control strip and push the start button, every time.
Anyone know if this will damage my computer??
I have selected the HD in the preferences startup; I've unplugged it for several minutes; started up in S mode; zapped the P ram; ran permissions; you name it. im at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Should i buy another Mac? I cant afford one in this economy.

I suggest you use the Recovery Partition Disk Utility to check the hard disk and then re-install the OS from there.

  • Short flickering when the notebook wakes up from sleep mode MacBook Pro Late 2013

    Hello everyone!
I have a question concerning the display of my new MacBook Pro with retina display (late 2013).
Sometimes when opening the lid when the notebook wakes up from sleep mode, the display is flickering for like two seconds. Then everything is normal again.
This specially occurs when the lid has been closed for a longer time. It makes no difference if the power adapter is plugged in or not.
Have you experienced a similar flickering with your MacBook Pro?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hello!
I have the same problem with my late 2012 MacBook Pro Retina. The constant flickering after being awoken from sleep was a minor annoyance for me so I contacted Apple Support.
I shall explain what I have done thus far, and I recommend you follow the same steps as I did to tick off possible causes:
Firstly, I reset my PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14222) and SMC (ttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964).
The issue still remained so I checked if the flickering occurred in a new user (if it does not then it points to your account having a setting which is causing the flickering - possibly third party). For me the flickering continued so I tested it in Safe Boot (which worked fine!).
I then ran (just to be certain) the Apple Hardware Test (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509). All seemed to be OK. So I reinstalled OS X and still the issue remained.
It was then I had an Apple Support person 'screen share' with me and we went through certain folders. My GPU folder had an unusual amount of files so we trashed them and began a restart however this led to a bigger problem; my notebook wouldn't boot (not even in Safe Boot!), so be very weary at this stage, I'm not sure if this was a rare case or we deleted something we shouldn't have. I then had to go into recovery mode to get back to square one.
Back to the initial problem I reinstalled a 'clean' OS X version from recovery mode; this was to determine whether if the data is corrupted on my account or if it's something else; most likely hardware by now even if there was nothing that came up in the hardware test (it won't account for everything). I checked from both a backup of my data and then from a fresh user after reinstalling OS X and still the flickering continued.
It was then a Senior Apple Support person set up an appointment to have my MacBook looked at and possibly repaired (it could be a minor wire causing the problem).
That is the point I am at now, so for my case it seems like a minor hardware problem. If your case is as similar as mine I recommend making an appointment with them to run more sophisticated hardware tests that your own MacBook would not run.
I will comment again when my issue is completely resolved for those who come across this Discussion in the future.
    Hope this helps!
