10.4.9 and Lightscribe Drive

Looks like another 10.4.9 problem, related to external drives.
I use a Samsung Writemaster SH164L external USB burner occasionally, and have not had issue with it until I updated to 10.4.9.
I took the opportunity to clean install before I updated, so the system was clean. Updated to 10.4.9 using the combo file (software update). Now the Lightscribe side of the device doesn't work. It burns discs fine, but won't do labels!
All firmware & drivers are up to date, and the drive works fine in Windows using my dual boot setup.
I've tried the reinstall of the combo file, disconnected the external drives and reconnected one by one, with no change. Repaired permissions etc.
Any more ideas? I am a n00b when it comes to Mac, so I hope it's something blatant that I've missed!
Lightscribe software was last updated by HP 31/01/07, and I've tried the Lacie labeller, and the free lightscribe one.
Intel iMac 20" Duo 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Apple, please resolve. It's an OS update issue!
I have one LaCie D2 LightScribe DVD (used by my MacBook and my iMac) and I bought one for my father-in-law's Mac Mini, same model, same time. After all three computers upgraded to 10.4.9, the Read/Write functions worked but the Lightscribe function stopped working (communication error).
I worked with LaCie Support and they even sent me two new drives - they all had the same exact symptom (I swapped ports, I swapped computers, I did the Combo 10.4.9 updates, I swapped cables, I did the Lacie firmware/host/labeler updates, I did the LightScribe Simple Labeler). Nothing works.
After noting that my wife's PowerBook G4 was on 10.4.7, I tried the drives there. The LightScribe function worked!!!
Tell me I don't have to downgrade to below 10.4.7 and replace my Intel Macs with PowerPC Macs (I don't even know how). Please let me know when the patch to fix this problem can be downloaded.
I can provide you the System Profiles for my MacBook, my iMac, and the working PowerBook G4 to your deep support staff if you wish.

  • Lightscribe Drive NO LONGER Being Recognized

I have a Lightscribe drive in my HP P6540F.  I used it six months ago successfully, but not since.  Now, when I try to use it, my software reports that there is no Lightscribe compatible hard drive to be found.  I also happened to have an external Lightscribe drive and installed it to use as a back-up.  Same prompt...no Lightscribe drive hard drive found.
I installed a second CD labeling/etching software, but it didn't fix the problem, i.e., same prompts back from both.
In researching the issue, I noticed that the former Lightscribe website is now defunct.  I smell a legal issue.
Has HP severed ties with Lightscribe?  I am wondering if the HP updates over the past six months have defeated the Lightscribe capabilities of my (two) drives, i.e., the hardware.
If that's not the case, any suggestions for resurrecting my drives?  Possibly a registry issue?

    Hi,
Review the information posted in this thread.
HP dropped support for Lightscribe long ago and you'll be lucky to even find a new Lightscribe optical drive even being manufactured.

  • Windows 7 RC Compatibility for C7280 and LightScribe

Will the C7280 Full Software install under the Windows 7 Release Candidate (not talking about the earlier beta builds), either in Vista Compatibility Mode, or with no modifications? Will all the updates install (including the recently released printer update to stop Office crashes) in regular or Vista Comp Mode? I’ve been reading also that scanner errors may occur, but I don’t know if this applies to the RC or earlier builds. I am running Vista right now. I know Windows 7 has basic drivers included. I have a copy of the RC  and would like to upgrade, but would prefer to retain as much functionally as possible first. Are Windows 7 drivers for the C7280 coming soon (either at full release or shortly before). I sent an e-mail about this two days ago and haven’t received a response. Also, I have a Lightscribe drive. Will this work in Windows 7? I’ve read both yes and no to this. I’ve heard the earlier betas give a false “Lightscribe failed to start” warning. Will new drivers be available soon if they are needed?Thank you so much

Hi mugentuner, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!
There's a lot of good information, including which systems are officially Windows 7 upgrade-capable, on the Lenovo support site:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/WIN7-HOME.html
After a clean install you of course need to apply Lenovo drivers & software. System Update is the easiest way.
For systems not on the official upgrade-capable list, a Windows 7 upgrade may be possible, but gets increasingly difficult the older the system is.
    I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

  • Does the HP G61 110SA have a Lightscribe drive??

Can anyone tell me if this laptop has a lightscribe drive and how can I check?
The drive does not have the logo on it but the spec on the HP website says it does.

I dont know if the Hp G61 110SA has a Lighscribe drive, But my Personal Computer (which im on right now) , i pulled up on my lightscribe control panal and mine is the same one your talking about , the hp DVDRAM GT20L DC05 190 (it should show an E: or some character when you bring it up on the computer).
What im Getting at is, Yes the hp DVDRAM GT20L DC05 190 is Lighscribe, and when it is connected to your computer when you search lightscribe on your desktop emblem you should find the Lighscribe Control panel , which alows you to change settings, shows your system software version and your driver  and iff its avalible.

  • HP LightScribe Drive on a G5?

    Hi Folks!
Has anyone installed an HP LightScribe drive on their G5?
I have one and am getting ready to try the install and config, but wanted to see if anyone else has tried . . .
If so, and it works, GREAT! . . .
    If so, and it didn't work, then maybe I shouldn't try . . .
    Thanks for any info!

    Hi Bobsax-
The LightScribe part works by you by manually placing the disk upside down in the tray and the drive then burns the label image.
I primarily bought it to use for a personal project I was did transferring all of the old home movies onto DVD. Burning a high-quality image was slow-kind of reminded me of burning DVDs at 2X back in the day. I think it took about 20 minutes per disk.
I don't use it for every day stuff as a hand-written label often suffices. But it does produce a classy image on the label side.
The nice thing is that the price of blanks is finally starting to come down. It took a lot of work to find them under $1 a piece a few months ago.
The software for actually laying out and burning the image was included with the drive. One would want to make sure the drive package included Mac OSX compatible software.

  • Need advice re: Lightscribe drive that will work in Mac Pro

I have the stock superdrive in my Mac Pro upper slot. I had a three year old LaCie 16x Lightscribe Drive that I took from my G5 and installed it in the lower slot. I could not get the MacPro to recognize it. I triple checked the cable connects, tried Cable Select and Slave jumper settings, installed the latest LaCie system extensions for the drive, but it still will not recognize it. It does not show up in Disk Utility or anywhere else.
So.... I bought the Lite-On DH-20A4H08C drive from Amazon. Put it in (Cable Select) mode, and the Mac Pro recognized it right away. The problem is that the tray in the Lite-On drive sits too low in the chassis, and when ejecting, it catches on the drive door of the Mac Pro - sometimes it can get out all the way under it's own power, sometimes I have to pull it out. It retracts pretty much OK. I'm not into the stress that this misaligned drive is putting on components, so I plan to return it.
Can anyone recommend an IDE Lightscribe Drive that will work in the Mac Pro and where the tray will eject nicely through the seemingly slimmed drive doors on the Mac Pro? If not IDE, can I use a SATA Lightscribe Drive? I understand there are two SATA ports on the motherboard beneath the back of the optical drive enclosure.
Looking for some positive experiences here please?
    thx -b

Well, I found the fix! I ditched the Lite-On and continued fiddling with my better fitting LaCie drive and I found that the LaCie drive has to be in the upper bay (i.e. first in the chain) for it to work. The SuperDrive had to be moved to the lower bay (last on the chain). I have no idea why this is, but swapping positions causes the LaCie drive to be invisible to the Mac Pro. Of course, both drives are set to Cable Select. Even LaCie tech support (which was very responsive BTW) were scratching their heads.

  • Install LaCie LightScribe drive?  Yosemite compatible drivers?

    Mac Pro mid-2012 (model MacPro5,1)
    Yosemite 10.10.2
I have an older working LaCie internal LightScribe drive I'd like to install into the available optical drive bay on this Mac Pro.
    Specifically looking for information...
    1.  The LaCie drive has an IDE interface.  Which IDE to SATA adapter will work with this?  I see quite a few adapters on Amazon that are pretty cheap, but no mention of Apple/Mac compatibility.  Anyone have a recommendation for a specific converter verified to work?  What about the power connection?  I don't see a 4-pin power connection or cable in this Mac, just the standard SATA connectors.
    2.  I know HP discontinued LightScribe a couple years ago and took down their LightScribe website in 2014.  LaCie is still providing downloads for their software and drivers.  I'm not too worried about labeling software as there are a few choices out there for Mac that burn LightScribe.  I'm more concerned about the LightScribe drivers, last updated in 2009, still being compatible with this computer and/or Yosemite.  Anyone have any experience with this?
    3.  Alternatively, does anyone know of a decent internal LightScribe SATA drive that will work with my hardware/OS configuration?  I realize this might also be a problem since the technology was discontinued in 2013.
    Thank-you!

    SOFTWARE
I hooked up my LaCie LightScribe IDE drive to a universal USB adapter and installed the HP LightScribe drivers from this web-page. Through online research, I confirmed that this is the latest version available, and it's the same driver package previously distributed by LaCie and currently distributed by BeLight.
Using BeLight's Disc Cover (version 3.0.11) labeling software, I was successfully able to burn a LightScribe label.
So yes, the widely available HP LightScribe driver (version 1.18.27.10) works under Yosemite 10.10.2
    HARDWARE
Now the issue of hooking up the IDE drive to the secondary optical bay using the Mac's internal 22-pin female SATA drive cable.  The 2012 Mac Pro does not have any internal Molex connectors.
I found this IDE to SATA adapter card which would take care of the data bus utilizing a 7-pin SATA connection.
Then I'd need a female Molex power connection to hook into the drive.  The IDE adapter card also needs a mini 4-pin power connector, so this 15-pin SATA to Molex & 4-pin adapter seems to fit the bill to power both the drive and the adapter card from a 15-pin SATA power connection.   However, since the Mac's internal SATA connector is an all-in-one 22-pin female connector, I'd need a 22-pin male SATA connector that splits off the 7-pin and 15-pin connections separately.  Here's one that seems to have it all, 22-pin male SATA plus 15-pin and 7-pin female SATA along with female/male Molex and 4-pin power.
Now, assuming all these cables, adapters and convertors work, I'm looking at roughly $20 - 25 for all.
Unfortunately, nobody seems to provide a simple adapter or kit that will plug-in directly between the Mac's 22-pin female SATA connection and the IDE & Molex connections on the drive.
Considering the number of adapters chained together, their combined cost, and the age of my LaCie drive, I decided to just buy a brand new Sony LightScribe SATA drive on eBay for about $30.  Once I hook it up and test, I'll come back and post my results.

  • Lightscribe drive??

I have a Pavilion g6-1d21dx notebook.  It does not have the lightscribe logo and the specs for the machine do not indicate lightscribe, but the drive itself does have the disc encoder sensor required for a lightscribe drive.  So, is it really a lightscribe drive, but it is not enabled?  Is there anything I can do to enable it?  Is there any workaround or is the hardware physically disabled?

    Try installing the lightscribe software:
    http://lightscribe.com/DownloadSection/windows/index.aspx
You need the system software and the simple labeler to test. If it does not work just uninstall it.
See if you can borrow a lightscribe disk and see if you can burn an image.
Or, go into device mananger and give us the hardware ID of the drive and we can look it up and see if has lightscribe capability. Personally I think lightscribe is overrated. The burn time for a good image is forever and the media is expensive. There is a good reason it never caught on in a big way.

  • Macbook internal Matshita UJ-857E and Lightscribe?

    Hi there,
Proud owner of a new Macbook (which has been giving me a few problems, but that's another story...) and my wife wondered if the internal Matshita UJ-857E on my Macbook is Lightscribe compatible? I'm new to DVD-burning and Lightscribe, so apologies if this is a very silly question!
Many thanks in advance for your help,
    Dan

Most third party media comes with some etching on the label side. Therefore this means that a certain amount of etching isn't going to make media unreadable. The real problem one may run into, and this is covered more in Macintouch is that media that gets labelled in any fashion by the user outside of the innner ring can potentially lead it to becoming unbalanced, and unreadable. Lightscribe sounds like it should be safe, but since reading those reports and Apple knowledgebase article 58641's limits on the thickness of media on slot loading drives and other users problems with reading media, I recommend sticking with high quality media and buying and storing the media in jewelcases, and using the jewelcase inserts to put in any written meta info about the disks instead of stickies, or pen writing on the disk. You can try lightscribe, but for sake of safety, I would keep at least a couple originals on plain media. For CD the best are Verbatim, Kodak, Imation, and Sony. For DVD, read http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/

  • Memory modules and hard drive not recognized

I removed and reinserted the factory installed Satellite L505D-LS5007 laptop hard drive and memory modules just as practice for installing a hard drive upgrade and an 8GB memory upgrade. The problem is obviously with the memory and not with the hard drive.
After the first practice try, one memory module was recognized. Also for a few seconds after the first practice try, I ran the PC with the battery installed, but no memory installed. I did not look in the User's Guide first to see that I should have removed the battery before removing the memory.
Now the System Indicator Lights for the HDD Activity and Memory Card Reader do not light up. The PC turns on and the display is solid black with no messages.
Before buying new memory modules, what possible ways might there be to get the PC to recognize the factory installed memory modules and hard drive again?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.

    Hi Chefjeegar
Yes that screwdriver kit has the #00 phillips screwdriver that you need to access the RAM and hard drive. You'll also need the Torx driver to change the hard drive. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Computer-Technician-Precision-Torx/dp/B0000934GO/r ef=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348072554&sr=1-1
For a good explanation about RAM look at the page on OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
In the UK Amazon or eBay might be your best bet for cheap RAM but read the description and reviews carefully. For a little more expensive but with a better warranty is Crucial UK http://www.crucial.com/uk/
A good resource for working on your MacBook is ifixit.com http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Core_2_Duo
Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.
Yes, you can put an SSD in the MacBook.

  • Can I upgrade my HP ENVY 14 DR DRE Laptop to a blueray and SSD drive?

    HI all,
Can I upgrade my HP ENVY 14 DR DRE Laptop to a blue ray and SSD drive?
    cheers

You can upgrade from HDD to SSD drive, but will not recommend it as it will void the warranty on the unit.
Pertaining to  bluray drive, you might have some compatibility issues unless you find the right model.

  • Deleting a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0

how do i delete a song from iTunes library and hard drive on Itunes 11.0 at the same time.

    Hello CleveCo, Inc
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
At some point in time, you may have selected the option to prevent that dialog from appearing again when trying to delete tracks from your library. To reset all of iTunes warning dialogs, click the Edit drop down menu and choose Preferences from the list (on a Mac it is *iTunes -> Preferences* ). When the window pops up, head over to the Advanced tab and click the *Reset Warnings* button. Then quit iTunes and relaunch it. That do the trick for you?

There is something incompatible would be my guess. Did you disconnect all your peripherals in safe mode just to check?
You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions.
