10.4.9 Combo Update fails verification

Hello all,
I've tried downloaded the combo update numerous times now via Safari and Software Updater and each time, the download completes but fails verification. I'm not quite sure how to go about updating.

Hi Sean,
what do you mean exactly with "fails verification"?

  • 10.6.3 Combo update fails 5x at end

I tried to install the 10.6.3 Combo update on a 2006 MacBookPro five times, with the same "installation failed" error. First time I tried via screen sharing from my desktop (where install went through without problems). Second time, directly from MBP. 3rd time after booting into single-user mode and running fsck. 4 time after logging in with shift key down. 5th time after booting into safe mode.
Permissions were repaired before first try.
Although it says it failed, the about box says "10.6.3". the only oddity i notice so far is the file mac_kernel at root, normally invisible, now appears. (but maybe that's the result of booting into safe mode??)
Any further ideas? Do I have a frankenstein system now?

to me it looks like the problem is somewhere in here and has to do with ownership issues on /Volumes/Boot OSX and or the com.apple.Boot.plist file mentioned. I just need to know what to do to fix it:

  • Download combo update fails, again and again

Any ideas on what this might be about? I have an Octo MacPro 2.8Ghz with a new installation of the original OS - 10.5.1 and whenever I try and update it with either the combo or an older update I get a "failed to validate this update" error message during startup. I can't use any of my newly purchased Avid software because this version needs 10.5.5 or above! Please Help!

    HI,
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
You've had issues with this before?
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9798214#9798214
    Try repairing disk permissions.
First, Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
You are running Software Update from your admin account ???
You could try downloading the 10.5.6 combo update 10.5.6 combo update then using Pacifist to extract the .dmg file.
Info on the combo and Pacifist from here. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1925796

  • 10.6.4 Combo Update fail, as do updates to iTunes and iPhone

I seem to have a larger problem here with updates, but for now I'll focus in on the 10.6.4 update where my efforts are centered.
I have tried 3 times to update my 10.6.3 machine to 10.6.4 (no, I don't have a SMART board and my maxfile limit is just fine, thank you).
Instead, I get the following error in the "install.log" file:
Aug 13 21:29:23 Aka /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/MacOS/Software Update[289]: PackageKit: Install Failed: PKG: extracting "com.apple.pkg.update.os.10.6.4"\nError Domain=PKInstallErrorDomain Code=110 UserInfo=0x119160430 "An error occurred while extracting files from the package “MacOSXUpd10.6.4.pkg”." I've downloaded fresh copies of the 10.6.4 Combo Updater 3 times, and even the .dmg file reports that it is corrupted and it won't unpack the thing.
Since I think this is a larger issue (I cannot get iTunes 9.2 and my iPhone 4.02 update just bricked my new iPhone) is there somewhere else that I can look?

Aw...shucks! Limiting the package scope did NOT work either.

Running a 10.6.0 virgin install has clearly not helped. Downloading combo updates isn't working. I'm pretty much screwed and royally ****** at Apple right now (almost enough to spend my night typing a detailed bug report on radar).
Any other ideas? Genius bar and make them suffer? Wipe my drive and re-install off my backup and just run 10.6.3 forever?

  • 10.4.3 Combo Update fails to mount and install

Has anyone been able to install the 10.4.3 combo update? I have downloaded 3 times, using different browsers, times of day, etc.... It downloads just fine, but it will not mount and I get an error saying that it has an invalid CRC check.
*sigh* I am slowly beginning to dislike Apple.

Thanks for posting an answer but you really did not say anything. I thought I made it clear that I have downloaded it several time with different browsers etc... The issue is not the speed of the download but rather the fact that it will not mount. Regardless, the new issue is that I have now formatted my Mac and the 10.4.3. upgrade simply will not install. It says that the volume does not have the correct requirements.

  • What do I do if a combo update fails to install?

On a MacBook Pro with 10.6.7 installed, tried to do a regular update, and it died.  Downloaded the 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1, and it fails to install.  are there some things to do next?

It was the drivers for a Canon printer. I ended up getting help from Apple's phone tech support. The solution was to go into the library, delete all existing Canon drivers, and re-install the printer via Software Update.
Thanks for the prompt reply, though. It always feels good to be listened to.

  • SL 10.6.8 combo update keeps failing on me

I have a mid 2009 macbook pro 13in. that came with in Leopard. In anticipation of Lion, I bought a retail copy of Snow Leopard being 10.6.3. I needed to upgrade to 10.6.8 to be able to get mac app store. But everytime i run software updater and download combo update for 10.6.8, it always fail. I tried cleaning up my disk by clean installing the retail snow leopard 10.6.3 and using migration assistant to restore my user, apps, settings, files and all that. but after doing all that trouble, combo 10.6.8 still fails. am i doing something wrong? or is there a problem with the update file itself?
I want to fix this so once i get Lion and encounter any problem, i can go back to 10.6.8 in a breeze.
    help badly needed.

runs installer, verifies it and when it starts to write the files and showed how much time left to finish the install, it will stop and show a window that the installation failed and i need to restart.
i forgot to mention that i can update to 10.6.8 from 10.6.3 by taking the long road of updating to 10.6.4 then 10.6.5... and so on, until i get to 10.6.8. but updating from 10.6.3 directly to 10.6.8 using combo update fails everytime even if i try it on 10.6.4, 10.6.5 and so on...
im looking through most discussions but i cant seem to find someone having the same issue as mine.

  • 10.6.4 Update Fails

Trying to update on MacPro (2.8GHz Quad-Core).
    1) got the notification via Software Update and attempted install. It downloaded successfully. I selected restart to install update. Packages validated. Error message stopped install.
    2) I repaired permissions; booted into Safe Mode; again tried to download/install update from via Software Update. Download was successful, install was not.
    3) Booted back into 10.6.3. Downloaded combo update and attempted install. Packages validate. Begins to write files. Install fails. Message: 'INSTALLATION FAILED. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance'.
From console: 10-06-16 3:08:46 PM Installer[60147] The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
Any ideas? I've installed this update successfully on many other machines.

So, as per baltwo's advice, I tried reinstalling a fresh OS on the machine.
My DVD was 10.6.0 and the re-install went well (though, for the record, took over half an hour on a Quad core Mac Pro).
The update to 10.6.4 from the Software Update failed. The 10.6.4 combo update failed too.
    So's you know.
I did however download the 10.6->10.6.1 installer and it worked. Similarly, the 10.6.1->10.6.2 installer worked. The 10.6.2->10.6.3 failed. The 10.6.4 Combo updated fails too.
So I'm stuck there at 10.6.2 and still don't know what's going on.
On Monday I will try zapping the PRAM and see if that helps.

  • 10.5.5 Combo Update - .dmg fails to mount

Downloaded the 10.5.5 Combo Update. The .dmg failed to mount. Error message says "not recognized."

Same Boat. I downloaded the Combo Update several times using different browsers such as Safari, Firefox, and even Opera. Same Error each time about "Invalid Checksum". I also downloaded and installed the new iPhone Update and now my iPhone battery lasts half as long. It seems to me that since leopard came out every time there is a new update it has not been tested properly and at least half of the people installing the update have problems. I also do regular maintenance on my computer using software programs such as Disk Warrior, Tech Tool Pro, Applejack, Onyx, and Socks. These bad updates are really starting to get old. I wish that apple would get these issues fixed PRIOR to releasing the updates...
I could be mistaken, but I don't recall as many errors and people having problems when there were updates to Tiger, Panther, Jaguar, or Puma. I suppose the fact that the OS that Apple is releasing next "Snow Leopard" is focused on Stability Issues and not new features tells the whole story. We'll all be shelling out another 129.99 for a new OS that is really just what this OS should have been in the first place; which means that, in the end, we're all really paying "$260.00" for a stable version of Leopard... I switched to Mac in 1993 to avoid these types of Windows-Like Issues. When Apple re-emerged after almost failing it appeared to me that they were focused on quality, but now I'm starting to wonder. It seems to me that the quality of Mac/Apple Products (including both Hardware & The OS) has really gone downhill...

Try repairing your hard drive and permissions then retry:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

    Thanks very much indeed.

I was going to suggest that you needed to install the mandatory updater, but the Adobe help page for it says you shouldn't need to if you already have update 8 installed.  Might be worth verifying though.

Unable to verify update iOS 7.0.2 failed verification  because you are no longer connected to Internet

I still haven't seen a solution to the problem "unable to verify update iOS 7.0.2 failed verification because you are no longer connected to internet"
I did not have my iPhone plugged in to power during download, had plenty of power.
Download burped once and restarted download.
I got to the Verification step and it failed multiple times.
I plugged in power, I turned off iPhone and restarted.
I tried to do the download again and it goes to the Verify step
and get the same error message.
I do not have an Apple PC, but, have a Windows 8 PC.
WIll iTunes help better manage the update?
