10.4.9 - Keyboard unable to control volume

After installing the 10.4.9 update, my keyboard now is unable to control the volume of my machine. When I press the VOL UP, VOL DOWN, and MUTE keys - I do get the on-screen indication that these changes are being made, but the audio indicator by the clock does not change. And, more importantly, the audio levels do not change at all. HELP!

I'm having the same problem, my only diffrence is that I still use 10.4.8.
anyone know the solution?
thanks

  • Unable to control volume on MacBook Pro?

Running OS X Mavericks (10.9.2) I am unable to change volume without restarting.  Awhile later it happens again, the F10, F11, and F12 keys become non-responsive in controlling the volume.

Have you tried a PRAM reset?

  • Unable to Control Volume on Hp Touchsmart 610

    Hello,
I just received my brand new custom HP Touchsmart 610 system.  I've found that I am unable to lower the master volume at all.  I have tried using the mouse to lower the volume on the sound mixer, the keyboard buttons and side monitor buttons.
Every time I lower the sound to say 50% it immediately slides back up to 100% automatically.  It's as if a "Volume Up" button is perpetually being held down, but no button is stuck on the keyboard or monitor.  I called HP and we did a full system restore but it did not resolve the issue, so they said to send it back.  While waiting on a new computer, I figured I'd give the forum a shot.
    Anyone have this problem?
    And also,
Another question... The HP My Touch Volume control that auto opens on the desktop when I turn the computer on can not be taken off the desktop.  The only way I was able to get rid of it was to end the My Touch process in task manager, but it seems like I should be able to disable that volume display on the desktop, and only open it when I want to adjust monitor settings...
Thanks so much for any help!

Hi to all that have volume control issues on the Touchscreen 610,
    Here is my experience:
I received my replacement (long story) TouchSmart 610-1180qd Win 7 64 bit computer from HP on Friday 07/15/2011. Right out of the box the volume control registered 100% and returned to 100% despite attempts to control it via mouse clicks and keyboard control.
My initial thought was to check and update the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC device and driver. At first, I simply disabled this driver which effectively gave me back control. Of course this is an unacceptable solution because it should work right out of the box, right? Upon reenabling the driver, the problem returned. I updated the driver but the problem persisted.
Perplexed as I was, I discovered that if I manually set the volume control using the volume control located on the left side case , it would allow a setting less than 100% and stay at settings which I deemed comfortable. At least for a while...
This solution was short-lived because when I attempted to adjust the screen down to "tablet mode", the volume immediately shot back to 100%. You see, when I grasped the case on the sides (where we are told to handle in order to adjust into the tablet configuration, that is, semi-flat on the desk), apparently some contact is made where the volume control is given the order to increase (this is not me accidentally pushing the buttons with my hand). The volume will stay there until I manually change it back using the left side case volume controls.
OK. So now I think there is a defect in the case design that causes the volume control to migrate to 100%. Perhaps HP will fess up to their quality control issues and fix this?
    If only that was all!
It seems that the same issue manifests itself under other circumstances. For instance, the Touchsmart was idling in screensaver mode while I was working on other computers in my network. You know, power on, updates, and the like on the other computers, when I noticed that this Touchsmart was showing the volume bar at 100%. This with no other input or contact of any kind! So, what happened here????
Clearly there is an issue with either the case design or software compatability. I wonder if any others out there experience the same issues as I've explained here.
Perhaps some of you can do a little troubleshooting and try some of these temporary workarounds as I've explained here and get back to this forum to explain your experiences.
Maybe together we can get HP's attention to recognize this problem.
    Thanks for trying.

  • Volume controls on my Apple BT Keyboard do not control volume on my Mac Mini

I just updated the OS on my Mac Mini to Yosemite and everything was working fine, but earlier today the volume control buttons on my Apple BT Keyboard stopped controlling the volume on my Mac Mini. I was watching a movie just last night and the keyboard controlled the volume just fine. So the keyboard WAS working fine for a few hours after I installed Yosemite.
When I press the volume buttons I get the screen display for sound and instead of the up and down volume that I usually get when repeatedly pressing the volume button I get a zero with a line through it. The same thing happens when I press the mute/unmute button so the computer is not muted. And it's not an issue with the F key settings in preferences because the volume buttons DO get a response and display on the screen, but the volume doesn't change and, as I said, instead of the up/down scale I get the zero with a line through it.
I can change the volume using the mouse and sliding the volume slider in ITunes up or down, but that's the only way. Also, strangely, the volume icon in the Apple bar at the top of my screen is grayed out. When I click on it, the slider shows volume all the way up and it's grayed out. And if I click and drag to try and change that slider, it doesn't respond.
Basically, it appears that the keyboard is, in some ways, not compatible with the computer. I'm typing with the keyboard now, and all the other buttons work except for the volume up/down/mute buttons. Even the change track, play/pause buttons work just fine. So it's not specific to the music controls. And again, I DO get that display for volume when I press volume up/down/mute with the zero and line through it.
I've owned Macs for over 10 years and this is the first time I've seen this. Very, very strange so any help possible is appreciated.

  • Unable to control volume in headset

Since upgrading to Lion I cannot adjust the volume when I am using my headset. If I use the volume control on the headset the sound icon appears on my iMac display changes as well as the volume control on the menu bar, but the volume on my headset is still at maximum. Help! I use the headset for Skype and this is making in nearly unusable.

I wonder if the lack of response means that I am the only one with this problem.
I am using Logitech headset .. probably H390.

  • Keyboard shortcuts to control volume?

I got used to the vol. up/down & mute keys on my 2004 iBook & hate having to use the slider controls on the menubar of my mini. Is there a way to set vol. up/down & mute keyboard shortcuts? What about with Butler, iKeys, or some other 3rd-party software? TIA,
    Nick D.

    One thing to try:
    Reset the PRAM.

  • New Keyboard - F11/F12 no longer controlling volume

After a less-than-ideal encounter with a cup of coffee, we've had to replace our aluminum wired keyboard.  Went to the apple store, bought what appears to be the exact same keyboard, except now F11/F12 no longer control volume as it did with the old keyboard (F12 brings up dashboard).
I've searched around, and it appears that I'm not the only one to have had this problem, but none of the proposed solutions seem to be working.  Holding "fn" while hitting F11/F12 doesn't restore their old function, checking the "Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys" checkbox in System Preferences>Keyboard doesn't fix it, and I tried downloading a recommended keyboard software update and was told that the version already installed on my computer is newer.  I'm running OS X Leopard (10.5.8) which I believe is up to date.
    Any ideas?

  • Mac Pro OSX 10.10 can't control volume in iTunes with keyboard

I can't control volume in iTunes with keyboard

Yes nachit, I have the same problem.
I've noticed that when I switch between the output audio devices (i.e. Built in speaker to headphones), the volume control fails.
I've already opened a topic yesterday. At this time, no answer.

  • Unable to control brightness in target display mode

I use my 27" mid2010 iMac as a display for my MacPro. However after the Mac OS X recent update to 10.6.8, I noticed I am unable to control the screen brightness. Usually, I was able to do so using the iMac keyboard to adjust brightness etc. but now they do not respond in Target Display Mode. The brightness adjustment do respond if I am using the iMac but not anymore in Target Display Mode. This is a little frustrating as the screen is really bright and is hurting my eyes.

Same here. Late 2009 iMac 27". This must be a bug. (Apple: please fix this, thanks!)
As a temporary solution I installed one of the brightness control apps you can find in the App store.
I used Midnight from Ollix, searching for 'brightness' in the app store reveals some more.
<note: controlling brightness this way affects colors and is no REAL fix, just makes your eyes hurt less until the bug is fixed>

  • HT3399 F10, F11 and F12 will not control volume.

  • Main "Play Control" volume changes on its own when I open and close WinDVD or Winfast

Main "Play Control" volume changes on its own when I open these programs, and when they're closed the main volume resets to where it was before the program was opened.
Surely I'm not the only one who has had this problem before.. I've had the problem with both Creative soundcards I've owned, before and after different drivers installations.
It can be very irritating and can potentially lead to damaged speakers if I'm not paying close attention to what my various volume knobs are set at before and after I open these programs.
I appreciate any and all input, thankyou.

I had to edit to reflect its Mavericks 10.9

  • Satellite P100-347: Blue screen appears on start up - unable to boot volume

Recently I left my 2 younger brothers playing NFS Carbon on my satellite P100-347, preinstalled with media centre 2005 edition, and now it fails to startup.
During the startup process eventually a blue screen is displayed for about a second and then it shutsdown (I manged to make out the words "unable to boot volume" from the blue screen).
I tried booting with an XP media centre DVD but it only gives me an option of reinstalling the OS with a price of losing all my very important data. Normally I would have recovered the system but I don't want to lose my data.
Is there anything i can do other than taking it to a technician?

    Hi
Well, mostly the BSOD appears due to a hardware problem or serious software issue.
In your case the software problem is possible
Unfortunately, I think the new OS installation is the best way to get the notebook running correctly.
Now you want to know how to save the data and files well, I think you should remove the HDD from notebook and should try to connect the 2.5 HDD via external USB controller to another computer. Then you could save the files on the other HDD
I think, now you know that the regular backups are important and necessary!!!!

  • Sound keys on keyboard no longer control sound. What should I do to fix this?

Sound keys on keyboard no longer control sound. What should I do to fix this?

    Hey Bill,
Check to see if the option for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." is turned off. When it is turned on, you would need to hold the Fn key while hitting one of those keys will make it work they way icons are displayed. To find out where this option is, go to System Preferences > Keyboard and in the Keyboard tab is where you want to be. Take a look at the article below for more information.
