10.4.9 - Power PC support: disillusioned Mac owner

I was hoping that 10.4.9 would at last Mac support for the Sony GPS-CS1. This device has been out for 6 months now and 'just works' on Windows and Linux. It appears it 10.4.9 may fix the problem on Intel machines, but not on PPC ones.
I did raise a bug some time ago but of course have had no reply.
I also tried to post a question here before 10.4.9 was released, trying to bring this to developers' attention to get someone to look at the problem while the update was in development, but of course my question was removed, as it was about unreleased software.
I wasn't asking anyone for details of secret Leopard features - I was asking if someone might pay attention to the Mac's unique lack of support for this device.
I also wasn't asking just for myself, but on behalf of a small community of GPS-CS1 owners - see http://www.macgpscs1.com
What chance I wonder is there that I'll ever see the GPS-CS1 work on a Power PC Mac? Especially given that this is probably the last release before Leopard. I'm not even going to ask if it'll work with Leopard, or this post will be removed.
It's a small thing - one minority device. But it says a great deal about Apple support. For the first time since buying a Mac, I think I might have made a mistake.

Hi Doug, already done that.
We (me and my blog visitors) spent a lot of time trying to establish where the fault might be first, but once I discovered that the device mounts on Ubuntu running on my Mac (the same Mac that doesn't work running Mac OS) then I submitted a bug on Bug Reporter on 22nd December. Full system profile and lots of USB Probe output and logs attached.
Bug number 4898558
But apart from an automated acknowledgment, I've had no contact from Apple and the bug status has never been updated.
On 29th December I sent an update, as we discovered that the GPS-CS1 now worked with a Core 2 Duo Macbook. We found that it had newer versions of IOUSBFamily and IOUSBMassStorageClass (a fairly good indication of where the problem might be). Again though, I've had no response other than an automatic acknowledgment.
For the first time since buying a Mac, I think I
might have made a mistake.
If you knew that the device was only supported in
Windows and Linux, it's not clear to me why you got a
Mac in the first place...

I bought a Mac long before buying a GPS-CS1. Although Sony didn't supply any Mac software with it I took a chance on it working with the Mac anyway (the interface to the computer is just a Sony Memory Stick with a USB connection) - and in any case I always have access to a Windows PC at work.
It isn't a huge problem for me - it's just that the impossibility of getting this working without Apple's help, and the impossibility of getting any help from Apple, are indicative of a larger concern.

the digital copy disc uses a power pc application that is no longer supported by mac os x, what can I do to obtain my digital copy?

If the OP is asking a generic question about how to run a CD-ROM, DVD or other disc that had an executable program that was a PowerPC application, he would either have to:
    1.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into a partition on his hard drive or an an external hard drive, for "dual-booting" if his Mac will still boot into SL; or
    2.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels to run his disc in Mt. Lion:

  • I want to play a old pc game but my mac book says it dosnt support power pc anymore is  they anyway to put power pc on my mac

how do i get power pc on my mac os lion software?

Try a virtualization software like vmware.  It basically lets your use some of your computer's resources to run a virtual computer.  You have to have a copy of the OS you want to run, for example whatever OS is supported by your legacy game.  Do some searching about virtualization How-Tos and I bet you'll be able to get everything in order.
Once you have a virtual machine set up you can install your game and play it via your virtual machine.

can anyone help me get my power point from my mac to a flash drive to work on a pc?

And make sure the flash drive is formatted as  FAT32. The PC won't read anything from a Mac OS formatted drive, and your Mac can't write to a NTFS (Windows) formatted drive.
If both the Mac and PC support it, exFAT is also possible and allows for larger file sizes.

  • Power Book vs. Mac Book Pro for Computer Science Student

I am a Computer Science Masters student that is looking into switching completely off of Windows machines in my home in the next 2 to 4 years. I’ve never used Macs before, but I’m tired of feeling like my hands are tied with Windows and I’ve been impressed with the G4 Power Books some of my peers have. I’ve actually been so impressed that I decided I want to start my switch from Windows to Mac with the purchase of a new Mac powered laptop for school.
I plan on using this laptop for the following tasks: writing papers, writing/compiling/debugging programs including an independent study project on OpenGL Computer Graphics, photo editing and some webpage design. Also some game playing and movie watching when I’m traveling.
So my question is this, do you think a 12" Power Book or a Mac Book Pro would serve me better? I am on a budget so if I get the MBP I wouldn’t have a lot of money left over after buying it for additional software, but if I purchase a PB I’m afraid it won’t be "up to snuff" or that the Power PC chip will stop being supported by future software. Are these fears unfounded? I do know there is a student discount and I’ve already taken that into account in regards to pricing.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide me.

I'm not a compsci student, but I think I can give you some insight on what to expect...
The G4 will handle a lot of what you throw at it, depending on how much RAM and how many things. I'm still running the stock 512MB and have found little-to-no need to upgrade at this time. I even went so far as to try a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM from my HP ZV6000 and it didn't change anything, so I'm good for now. Over the years, I've been impressed w/ the performance and efficiency with the G4 design and architecture, so I doubt there will be anything that it can't do based on what you're describing.
Gaming may be another story, although with the latest rev. of the 12" PB, I am impressed and mildly surprised at the performance w/ gaming. I play Call of Duty and Doom 3 on occasion and both run great. Just remember to put your processor performance on "Highest" as to turn off the processor throttling (much like Cool 'n' Quiet on AMD architecture). I played Doom 3 last night w/ medium quality @ 1024x768 and it ran quite well... Call of Duty will fly even on battery (ie. reduced processor speed) or AC... I've yet to try Call of Duty 2 but I hear it's going to be a monster w/ system requirements.
Writing Papers -- You can do this with anything...but if you're referring to the comfortable aspect, I think you'll love the keyboard personally. Typing on my big HP and on my 12" PB, it's night/day. The HP has a good keyboard, but it's not something I can 'fly' on...and by fly I mean 80-90WPM w/ little to no mistakes. I notice I make fewer mistakes on the PB keyboard because the keys seem to be 'grouped' together better and it's got a nice feel when you're slamming the keys down while you're in thought on a particular subject.
I also use Office X (or 10)...have had no need to upgrade since it works very well for what I do. I've never used Appleworks...
Future Software? -- Two words -- Universal Binaries...they will be around for many moons to come, and then some. Apple supported 68k for almost 11yrs (if I'm not mistaken) and software developers have already committed to Universal Binaries (aka. UB, or Fat Binaries) because of the sheer install base of PowerPC. The Intel transition will probably be in the 'teething' stage for another 2yrs before it's the standard Apple base across the board, and by then it will still only be a percentage of the PPC install base. Rest assured--your PPC Mac will be working long after you even upgrade (4-6yrs down the line).
The only thing I recommend is AppleCare, and not because I get anything from Apple over it. I've used it on my Rev. B (1.0Ghz) 12" PB and it paid for itself in the last year I had it. It covers everything that isn't accidental, so if you have issues w/ the LCD or Logic Board (aka. MLB), it'll pay for everything and shipping (both ways). It's also worldwide, so if you're on a trip to the UK and have problems w/ it, you can stop by any one of a handful of Apple Stores (Regent Street is awesome, I'm told) and they can fix it for you. There's also hundreds (if not thousands) of Apple Authorized Service Providers worldwide, and from what I'm told, they prefer Apple over many manufacturers because they are 'no hassle' when it comes to warranty claims. In other words, AppleCare may be the only investment that you may never use, but if you do, it'll pay for itself.
Computer Graphics, well, I don't do graphics but I can say that almost everything Adobe makes runs and runs well on Mac hardware.. I think you'll love the Quartz engine too...it's really quick compared to Direct X (I notice this in gaming, but what do I know...).
Good luck to you in whatever you decide...

  • Power Supply / Support

Currently my powermac G5 is at the service department due to a failed power supply. The machine is no more than 2 months old and now I am waiting for Apple to get their power supply in stock so I can get my machine back up and running.
I'd have to say this is the worst experience I've ever had with Computer support. I've dealt with Dell, IBM, Compaq and they are all very supporative and quick regarding the repair of my machine.
The lady I spoke with intially when I first had the problem said had me try a bunch of crap that I had already done but insisted I try. When I told her I think it is a hardware failure she continued to make me try some tests. I repeated that I believed it was a hardware failure and she went on to say that there was nothing she could do and I needed to contact an authorized service provider and hung up.
Now I'm waiting for this power supply to come in, with no accurate date of arrival (still says 2/2 ship date) and my service provider is no help either. This machine is for a business and I am very lucky that we have an extra power mac to do work on otherwise we would be SOL. I would expect when purchasing apple care they have some sort of next day service as any other large PC manufacturere does.
I personally own a 15" PB but have to say Apple's customer service is the pits.

s... "Well Mr. so & so,
looks like we have to special order a screwdriver to
be able to remove the processers, to get to the power
supply, that we hope have in the next few days and
then we can get this fixed"
The processor screws strip easy too. Mine had to be replaced. Luckily, the independent Apple dealer I went to had everything in stock and had me going the same day I took it in.

No. There is no "USB Target Disk Mode".
Just so we're clear, when you start your Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM - holding T on startup), do you see a FireWire icon on the Mac mini's display? IIRC, it's not required that the Mac mini be connected to a display for TDM, but it would help diagnose whether or not the mini is actually starting in this mode.

When I power up my 2008 Mac Pro I get the "welcome chime", fan comes on, a light comes on on my Apple moniter and then nothing - black screen. What,s going on?

what you describe as the "welcome chime" is the indicator that your Mac has passed the Power-On Self test, and if a suitable source of software can be found, booting is likely.
If the screen stays dark, the most likely explanation is a graphics card failure. But it could also be caused by a backlight failure in the LCD, so be sure you try shining a bright light at the screen to be check whether the picture is there, but just not illuminated.
Graphics card failure will end the boot-up process in some cases, and not have an impact in others. Two external indications you can use when your display is not working are: The Caps Lock key, which is under the control of Mac OS X, and the Control-Eject dialog box shown below. Note that the default is Shutdown, so a Mac that shuts down in response to Control-Eject followed by Return is working fine.

  • Native signing not supported on mac!!

To sign both the installer and its executable we're using Thawte and Comodo certificates. For MacOS we've Thawte and Apple. This following command builds a proper signed installer version (along with its executable .exe) with the combination of both the certificates, in Windows:
    adt -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx -target native -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx myApp.exe myApp.airi
    (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/air/build/WS789ea67d3e73a8b22388411123785d839c-8000.html)
When running the same command to compile a .dmg file - ADT reported an error:
Native signing not supported on mac
I'm not sure if the adt doesn't has the ability to do such process in MacOS unlike Windows! Any idea?

    Hello Ken,
Thanks for commenting. But that 'solution' already tested and its found not true with recent AIR SDK version.
    If you do this:
    adt -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx myApp.exe myApp.airi -target native
    You'll have compiler error:
"-storetype already specified", and you can see why in the command
    If you do this:
    adt -package -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx native -storetype pkcs12 -keystore myCert.pfx myApp.exe myApp.airi -target
    You'll again have compiler error:
    "not enough argument"
I don't think this have a fix yet.
