10.4.9 ruined my keyboard

I reformatted because of a display issue I had, and now that I'm running 10.4.9, I'm having some keyboard troubles. The eject key no longer works, and it's getting pretty annoying. I've had a couple times where I drag the disc to the trash and it disappears from the desktop but doesn't eject. Hitting the button on the drive does nothing, and since it's not on the desktop, there's no option in the menu bar to eject. So I basically am forced to do the paperclip trick.
Any ideas? I see no option anywhere in sys prefs to "enable" it. It's also annoying because I used to turn the computer off by pressing ctrl + eject to bring up the shut down menu, but I can't do that anymore.
Anyone else having any problems like this? Or have any ideas on how to fix it? I can't even hold F12 anymore, as it seems Apple got rid of that nifty feature an update or two ago.
Matt

Heh, yeah I searched before I posted but didn't see that. Then after I posted I started looking through the forum and literally just finished reading it. The thing is, I just held down the eject key and the icon popped up, but the install disc is still on the desktop, won't eject. And I just went to click it and drag it to the trash and as soon as I clicked it, it disappeared.
...yet it hasn't ejected...
Shoulda stuck with 10.4.8.
And if I open a Finder window, the install disc is still listed as a volume, but has no eject button next to it. If I click it, it says "the volume cannot be found."
Nice.

  • Ergnonomic keyboard for mini

OK I have a mini on order now. Since I am clear on the opposite side of the US from Apple, I expect it will take longer to get here. This would probably fall under general apple equipment but since the mini will be my new comp, I decided to ask here.
Now I'm into RP/MU* games and general writing, which means I use my keyboard fairly heavily for writing. This made me think since this is an intended use of my comp, it makes sense to replace my keyboard with one designed for heavy writing rather then a standard keyboard.
The keyboard I have on hand both has a spacebar problems and the wrong plug. Never going to remove a spacebar again, it has ruined my keyboard for normal use. That I've had to type one handed due to an injury makes hard pressing keys even worse so this keyboard is going to be my back up.
I have been trying without luck to get a simple ergonomic keyboard for a mac. I am disapointed in the offical apple brand keyboard which is nothing but an over glorified laptop style keyboard. OK, it's pretty and may suit people who need a space saving keyboard.
I took a trip out to Albany, NY the other day with a focus on keyboard shopping. I went to Castle computers, the offical Apple store in crossgates, a small used comp. shop and Compusa. I found just what I wanted at Compusa, but the catch was it wasn't in the apple section. Yes I've found fancy $300 ergnomic keyboards online for macs, but no simple ones in the $30-40 range like I am finding for the nonmacs.
It would be nice if the new keyboard were campatble with both my powerwave 604/132 and the mini but if not, I'd like it to fit with the mini.

It doesn't sound like you're talking about needing a keyboard that has an ergonomic layout (something along the lines of the MS ergonomic keyboard at http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=043) so much as a keyboard that is more comfortable to type on and in general use than the low-grade models that are more commonly available.
If the latter, I can recommend the Matias TactilePro keyboard as fully Mac compatible and with significantly better key action than Apple's own models. My only complaint about it is that it's rather 'clacky' in use. Details can be found at http://www.matias.ca/tactilepro/index.php and a quick search on Google should help you locate one at a bit of a lower price than the $99 Matias want.

  • Should I not play games on my Macbook Pro?

I heard that for laptops, gaming is not a good idea because of the questionable resiliency of the keyboards and trackpads.  Is this knowledge applicable to MacBook Pros as well?  I know Apple makes products that last, but when it comes to onboard keyboards and trackpads, I'm unsure of it.
So should I not play games on my MacBook Pro?  To avoid ruining the keyboard or trackpad?  Or is this something that I don't need to worry about?

I doubt that, can you substanciate that claim?
I've never had a Mac "wear out". Not one in 27 years.
I'd like to see this 27 year Mac your still using, can you post a picture?
but my keyboards are shiny with wear and still work 100% flawlessly.
For a 27 year old keyboard they better be very shiny with wear!
If I had known they would have lasted that long maybe I would have treated them better.
So this 27 year old keyboard isn't working anymore, what happened you get mad and take a hammer to it?
"Tear" on the other hand is what happens when you dump a lot of money on a piece of junk PC. Lots of tears.
How would you know this if you used the same Mac for 27 years. LOL

  • IOS 7(0.3) apparently ruins keyboard shortcuts?

After installing iOS 7 all my keyboard shortcuts are gone and worst of all I even can´t create new ones. When I try creating a new shortcut and archive it nothing happens... Anyone have similar problems or maybe a solution? And yes i´ve tried the most common solutions Thanks!

    I have the same problem.
It seems to be linkend to the synchronisation of Documents and data with Icloud : I found this explanation in several forums for IOS 6 a(for example http://forums.macg.co/iphone/raccourcis-clavier-hs-ios-6-a-1201194.html, in french) and it seems to be the same thing in IOS 7.
If you inactivate the synchronisation for Documents and data to Icloud, you will recover your shortcuts, but it doesn' seem to be a stable solution.

  • Plans for Small Pull Out Keyboard?

    Hi,
Are there any plans for a pull out keyboard?
    Best Wishes,

We're just users like you but it's doubtful that Apple is going to ruin the sleek lines of the phone by adding a slide out keyboard.

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?

  • I stupidly spilled water through the keyboard on my MacBook Pro the other night!! :-(

I had my MBP on my nightstand, was changing sheets on my bed...I knocked a big glass of water over RIGHT ON TO MY MBP's Keyboard.  It was open and running at the time.  It immediately goes black!  I turn it over and water literally pours out of it. OMG, I've had it like 2 months!  Anyway, I immediately removed the back and sprayed high pressure air from inside to hopefully clear as much water as possible out as I can.  Then, luckily, I remembered I had some VERY BIG Ziploc bags (Big Bags 15" x 15").  So I put it in the bag with about 2 cups of rice and a handful (5 or 6) small silica gel packets that I keep in my safe.  This was 4 days ago.  I tried it last night...attached the MagSafe power cord and the light just blinked rapid amber on the indicator. I put it back in the bag...no hope left! :-(
Tonight I gave it another try, attached the MagSafe power adapter....and GREEN!!!  Trying not to be overly excited I gingerly hit the power button...SWEET LORD the thing fired right up!!!  A few quirks with the trackpad, but they slowly seem to be diminishing!  I just had to say Apple builds a helluva computer!  Now I just need to remember not to put it on the nightstand next to my water glass!!  Dumb move, but it worked out ok!!  I am in disbelief.  Had to thank God tonight that my $2K+ laptop wasn't ruined by my stupidity AND thank this forum for the rice in the bag advice!  This is my first Mac and besides beating the Windows based units to ****, they're TOUGH!
Recommendation: water + MBP = BAD.  Stupid blind luck and good advice on this forum = working MBP and my thanks to all of you! :-)

Glad to hear things are working out well for you. It is extraordinarily fortunate that you did not permanently damage the MacBook Pro. It is good that you are being more careful.
    Enjoy your machine.
    Safe computing.

  • Apple wireless keyboard a1134 issues w 2011 mbp

I'm having serious issues with the A1134 keyboard from Apple.  I use my macbook pro both at home and at work in clamshell mode, that is with the lid closed, power connected, and an external monitor on mini display port.  I use the Apple Bluetooth keyboard A1134, and the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad.  The computer ALWAYS pairs just fine with the mouse and track pad, but it seems like almost every day now my computer refuses to immediately pair with the keyboard.
It's very frustrating, and I'm not sure how to fix it.  The problems seem to have happened when I wanted to "play" with my keyboard and see if it would pair to my iphone and some other devices, which it did quite nicely (i paired both my home and work one to it at some point).   Even though I've since gone and removed it from my iphone and turned bluetooth off on the phone, the pairing with my laptop seems to be a constant battle.
Does any one have any suggestions on how I can completely delete all previous pairings from the keyboard itself?  It has to be storing the pairing information in some ROM chip on the keyboard, so it would be nice to factory reset the keyboard somehow so i can start over.
Also, do you think since I have a keyboard and mouse paired at work and another set at home my system might be getting confused with all these devices paired up to it?  It's so frustrating and has really been ruining my awesome Mac experience that I love so much.

    Hello:
You do not indicate what level of OS X you are now operating (your profile needs updating).

  • Yosemite upgrade: function keys no longer work, no keyboard lights and have to sign in twice after sleep mode.  Anybody else having these problems?

    Hi,
Since I did the Yosemite 'upgrade' last week I have been having problems with my MacBook Pro that never happened before.  The most frustrating problems involve my keyboard which doesn't light up (checked my settings and they are correct) and the top row of function keys don't do anything so I can't adjust the volume, brightness, etc.  Then if my screen goes into sleep mode, when I wake it back up I have to sign back in twice - I never had to sign in at all after sleep mode before.
I'm finding that in order to get it working properly I am having to completely shut down and start up again but when the keyboard problems are happening I can't get anything on the apple dropdown to work either (i.e. shut down, restart, etc) so I can only shut down by pressing and holding the on/off button.
I've never had problems with my Macbook before and feel like Apple have completely ruined it in one update!  I've had a look through other posts on here but can't find anybody else having these problems so I would be really grateful if anyone could help me and offer me some advice on how to sort it out.
    Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro's keyboard and trackpad aren't functioning well, please help, thank you!

Dear Apple Support and Apple Communities,
hopefully this question will be easily understood and will be answered with answers that can help, useful and beneficial. I will explain the problem, story that I guess began the problem, specs and information of the Notebook and so on.
I love products produced by the brand, Apple, but they can get broken, ruined or destroyed. So, I do try my best to take care of devices that I have well. Although, my father bought a Macbook Pro last year, around November or December, 2013(I THINK). I don't think it's very old, maybe 3 - 5 months, but it should be in a good condition. I have dropped it many times, hopefully that won't effect the problem. Now, the problem, the Notebook is a beautiful device that I would love to keep using, but I don't really know how to use it properly and in the CORRECT/RIGHT/GOOD/SAFE way. If possible, can you list methods/ways to do those things? If so, thank you! Anyway, back to the topic, the Notebook's keyboard has a problem, some keys aren't responding, especially the alphabets/letters, I guess some other keys worked because I did the PRAM RESET. Anyway, the trackpad is also not functioning well, sometimes, when I right click the trackpad or when I click the entire surface with one finger(RIGHT CLICK OR SOMETHING ELSE), it would left click, I found a way to fix is, put the Notebook to sleep by closing the cover, hopefully that's alright. Anyway, it all began, I guess, when I was brushing my teeth. I dislike to waste time, so I used the Notebook and brushed my teeth simultaneously. I guess Saliva was being produced because of the acidic substance(TOOTHPASTE)? Anyway, my mouth had a lot of liquid in it, could have been Saliva, water and toothpaste. So, Physics, natural forces, Gravitational force occurred, some of the liquid left my mouth and onto the keyboard. I didn't panic because I think I heard that keyboard could not or did not suck in a lot of liquid, but I did clean it up. Anyway, the Notebook including the keyboard and trackpad were functioning like normal. I guess after three hours, something happened to the Notebook. I think I was using Safari in FULLSCREEN MODE and suddenly an application or software for another application appeared. It was requesting permission for an update, I think. I updated it and suddenly, the Notebook went haywire. Probably not immediately, but I guess the Notebook did go haywire. I tried searching for ways to fix it, but not much could fix or solve the problem. Hopefully your answer-s will fix or solve the problem, thank you.

    INFORMATION
The Notebook has a few dents, I guess. I tried to open the keys to check for toothpaste or liquids. My brother told me that toothpaste is dense, probably the answer? My other brother told me that the keyboard and/or trackpad are/is "shocked"(LIQUID AND ELECTRICITY, NOT SUCH GOOD COMBINATIONS). Hopefully this is enough to be counted as detailed and informative. Thank you for your time! Take care!

Take it to an Apple Store for diagnosis and repair. This will not be free, dropping the Mac and dropping liquids on it are not covered by the warranty.

Hi. I have the Apple connector kit...and actually played Garageband via my M-Audio Oxygen 25-keyboard thru  my iPad2--without a powered hub.
But that was two month ago.
Now...I can't get it to play--with volume.   I can hear the notes...but faintly.  And I have pushed ALL possible volume controls up (Keyboard & iPad).
I know the keyboard is triggering, because I tested it on a MacBook: got full volume, just like before.
But just can't get full volume from the iPad2.  I got a 4-port USB hub...and tried interfacing it between the keyboard and the connector kit/iPad2.  But still no volume.  It's almost like a switch is off in the iPad???
Any help would be appreciated.  Dan

    hello again,
i didn't really dare to delete the blue home folders before, just in case everything went wrong, but now i think i have so little space that i can't afford to lose 2.25gb!
one thing that slightly worries me is the fact that the 'proper' library folder (in the home icon) is 2.09gb, whereas the 'wrong' one (from the blue folder forenamesurname) is 2.24gb - this is the one i would be deleting. just seems odd to delete a larger file than the one i presume i'm using.
"Move everything you want to keep out of the blue folders, and then place both of the folders on your desktop. If everything works properly after a few days, delete both folders. If you are asked for your administrator password at any point or if either folder is copied instead of moved when dragged, don't delete that folder."
by 'everything you want to keep', does this include the library folder? 'cause there doesn't seem to be much else, and i'm not sure if deleting the library folder would ruin all my preferences.
i've put both of the folders on the desktop, it didn't ask for the admin password or try to copy them, so i guess that's good news. what kind of things should i be looking out for to act differently?
are the folders not in use now that they are on the desktop?
also if i put them in the trash will they have no effect? i.e. the same as permanently deleting them, so i could put them in the trash as a test.
    cheers, stephen.

  • GX630 Keyboard problems

Hi I am having problems with the keyboard on my GX630 notebook. I will be typing and all of the sudden the cursor will jump to a earlier part of the sentence and ruin it. I tend to look at the keys when I type so often I dont see until I am done. I thought it might be me hitting the touchpad by accident but i disabled it and it still happens. Sometimes even touching the black plastic area on the left side of notebook seems to affect the cursor for some reason. This problem is VERY annoying and ruins my productivity on this laptop. Also the backspace key has a tendency to erase whole paragraphs rather than just a single letter, which has led to me pulling my hair out at times. I really am sick of the cursor randomly jumping around sentences while I type!!

This has been answered many times.
Your palms are touching the touchpad while typing.
Hold your wrists up while typing or be more aware of where they are.
This is nothing new to laptop owners.
Some laptops let you turn the touchpad on and off, but I cant find that for the 630

  • Wireless keyboard weird behavior (useless)

    Hello.
Today I cleaned up my wireless keyboard with a tissue and a little of alcohol but after I cleaned the keyboard starts to have a weird behavior: The keys are not working, other keys are like stuck and depressed and other just does not respond.
The keyboard is useless like that.
I will let it dry well until tomorrow to see if it works. The batteries are new.
Any help will be very useful.
    Thank you.

If alcohol got inside the keyboard you may have ruined it however only time will tell. If it does going forward it's OK to use isopropyl alcohol however put it on a rag or cotton ball and use that to rub the keyboard clean.

  • New Z70 Keyboard issues

Hi all, I have recently just purchased the new Lenovo Z70 laptop and it arrived a few days ago. Everything about it seems fine except the keyboard, it works but only just you have to really push hard and very central for it to register me pushing keys, as such trying to type anything takes years and is unbareable. Has anyone else experienced this? or know what is causing it?

I also have very similar keyboard issues.  I bought the laptop beause it has all the things I want (epescially 17 inch screen & NON-GLARE screen which is crucial to usability.) But - I feel like this laptop has been ruined because it 100 percent slows down my work due to the keyboard problems.  I'm a very fast typist and have never had a keyboard slow me down until now, and the slowdown is huge.  I thought that my fingers would get used to whatever new touch methods are required after 6 weeks but it hasn't happened.  I end up with a big problem on the letter c --- half the time it appears twice and sometimes it doesnt appear at all.  Then there are the passwords that dont work for several times beacuse the keyboard is not registering the correct keystrokes.  And sometimes I dont catch what it has done to my text , with bad consequeces.  All my emails are unfortunately in an account that is labeled as my domain name with a .om after instead of .com because of the problems with the 'c' key that I didnt realize until much later.
I'm not able to describe the intensity of the issue sufficiently, so just would have to state here that because of this keyboard issue, this is the worst laptop I've ever bought unforunately.  I can't understand how such a great item would be shipped wiht the primary user interface (keyboard) so effed up. I attribute some of it to posisble requirements of the keys themselves to get touched only in certain directions in order to regiister a keystroke.  But that doesn't explain the duplicate keystrokes I often see.
In summary - I wish I had stayed with Dell.  I thought I'd go with Lenovo this time and this keyboard thing makes me frustrated that I strayed.
