10.4.9 spinning clock on my Macbook - what to do?

I bought a Macbook 2.0GHz yesterday and it seemed to be working fine -- I was able to transfer docs and applications from an older machine -- until I ran Software Update. The updater successfully updated a number of applications (iTunes, etc.) but then hung when it got to the 10.4.9 update. The machine went to a blue screen, and I left it alone for an hour to no effect.
I've tried to reboot and all I get is the spinning clock at the startup screen. I even left it overnight but it remained stuck on this screen. Using the installer DVD I ran Disk Utility and verified the disk and fixed permissions, but the system still doesn't boot up from the hard drive.
I see that a few other people on the net have reported similar problems, but I haven't seen any clear advice about what to do....

Target Disk Mode is described here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If you have another Mac, you can hook it up with target disk mode and see if the contents are visible.
If you don't have another Mac, but a Firewire external hard drive with an operating system installed (use GUID partitioning for formatting before installing), then you can see if the contents of the internal hard drive are visible.
Either way would get beyond a corrupted boot sector to read data off the machine.
And if neither can, the question of whether or not your data is backed up is important because this could mean that either your directory is damaged (in which case it would be safe if you have a backup to use Alsoft Disk Warrior), or the drive itself was a lemon in which case you'd want Prosoft Data Rescue to attempt to recover the data if you don't have a backup.

  • My imac won't start up past the grey screen, apple and spinning clock

Hi there.  First time posting - usually either apple support website or previous threads solve the problem.  Alas, not this time.
I have an intel imac - can't tell you much about the details as I can't get any info out of it.  I installed snow leopard about a year ago - no issue since then other than occassionally the screen goes black but nothing major.
Yesterday, I backed up to my usual passport backup and then today, it froze.  I couldn't turn it off or restart at all so resorted to the power button.  Since then, I can turn it on, it goes to the grey screen (no blue screen) and I get the apple logo and the spinning clock/wheel.  For hours and hours....
So, I tried one of the apple support pages and worked through - peripherals, safe boot, NVRAM, PRAM, tried to reboot with mac osx disc (the original not snow leopard) - nothing.  Absolutely nothing changes - same old grey screen, apple logo and spinning clock/wheel.
HELP - do I try and reboot with the snow leopard disc?  I don't know what to do next - I am no techie so half the threads don't even sound like English to me.
Thanks in advance, hope you geniuses out there can help me out.

    Thanks for the reply.
I had tried to reboot with the original disc but it never worked. The imac just spits out the disc and eventually, I am back at the grey screen, apple logo and wheel spinning. I tried it one more time following your reply. Same outcome.
My instal disc 1 had the instruction re hardware test which I have also tried with no success. I can't remember if it came with a disc 2 though I seem to have a couple - I also have a macbook and that seems to be still alive even if it is slow.
I tried to reboot with Snow Leopard disc - power on, chime then hold down C key. Same old - grey screen, apple logo and wheel spinning. Disc spat out eventually.
Any other suggestions welcomed or I am off to Apple tomorrow.

  • How do I get rid of the spinning pinwheel on my macbook?

How do I get rid of the spinning pinwheel on my MacBook? I'm assuming I need to clean it up, but not sure how.

A little more information is needed. Which model MacBook? Which version of OS X? How much ram is installed? Finally how much free space is left on your hard drive?

  • White Screen w/ Apple logo + spinning clock frozen after SL reboot

    Hi there,
I bought a Mac Box Set and tried to install Snow Leopard to my Mac Mini (Intel chip with 2G RAM running Tiger) today by inserting the DVD into the original internal DVD RAM drive that came with the Mac Mini. The window shown up and I followed the instruction to double-clicked the Snow Leopard icon. Then I was prompted to click 'restart' and according to the instruction, the machine suppose to reboot and start the installation. Machine started reboot and everything seems ok until the process got stuck on the default white screen with Apple logo and a frozen 'spinning clock' after 3 to 5 min... then, waited for an hour and still showing the same screen.
I tried manually power-off and redo the same process at least 5 times and the results are the same.
Any suggestion is truly welcome and appreciated.

I have actually tried to install SL on a brand-new (internal and unformatted) HDD but same 'frozen' screen shown up. According to the procedure, it supposed to show a screen to let me choose if I want to do partition on my new HDD and then format accordingly. Unfortunately, this screen never shows up...
Any other thought/idea would be appreciated.

  • What is the max song limit for wifi media sync? Getting spinning clock and device acts locked up...

    Okay,
So my device has been working fine for quite a while and I moved over OS6 when it was made available to the beta testing group about a month ago.
So I decided to try out the wifi media sync last night and it took Desktop Manager about an hour to even come up with the list of music.  After I saw all my songs listed I synced over a few songs via USB to get the wireless sync portion all setup and make sure it was working.
After I unplugged my device from USB and let it do it's thing over wifi it started up with the spinning clock and became VERY unresponsive.  Now everytime I start it up, it is somewhat workable for 1 minute or so and then the spinning clock comes back. (Even though I have shut off Wifi so it won't continue to attempt syncing)  I actually let it sit and run overnight but the device had a 601 error when I woke up and it needed a reset.  When it came back up it resumed with the spinning clock again.
I'm thinking it's the number of files I have in my library, about 45,000...
What's the most you've ever tried to use with media sync???  There is no provision inside the desktop manager as far as selecting which library you would like to sync or a way to reduce the number of songs it sees.  Only way to do this appears to be changing media player's libraries so that it doesn't see all the files.
Really, I would like to be able to sync some of those files, but all of them are not needed.  And the fact that it basically makes my device unusable is the biggest problem.  I'm in the process of trying to disable it completely via desktop manager so I can have my device back....
I looked around at various forums and can't seem to find anyone else running into this.  Anyone here had a similar or related problem?  What did you do to get around it?

One other thing I found... It was still doing the spinning clock and locking up, but it took a while after boot for the problem to crop up.
I pulled the media card and found that there was a media sync folder under Blackberry\System that had some files in there that were pretty big.  The artwork file was over 150MB and some other files were largish.
I deleted the entire media sync folder and now it seems to be behaving itself.  No more spinning clock and it seems to be slowly returning to normal.  (Besides all the messages it deleted during the whole process)
If anyone else runs into this I would say you should clean the folder off the media card along with disabling the sync.  Seems the BB still reads that folder and processes it if present.

I was updating my macbook pro and it restarted but didn't boot up.  It made it to the gray apple screen with a spinning wheel underneath it.  What do I do?

This was happening to mine as well and I had to take it in a few times and they had to wipe it completely. If your computer is more that 5 years old, it may be that it is time for a new one. I suggest taking it in so they can diagnose it!

  • PowerBook Won't start-up: Eternally Spinning Clock at Apple Icon

Hi. I have a G4 PowerBook (details below). During a business trip last week it started acting funny so I used DiskUtility (running from the start-up internal system hard drive on the PowerBook) to attempt to repair permissions. This repair attempt froze about ¾ of the way through (despite an overnight trial) so I had to do a hard reboot. At that point I could not get the computer to work. Specifically, when I attempt to start, I get to the gray screen with the Apple logo on it and the spinning clock. This spinning symbolic clock will run all night without getting to the log-in screen.
    What I’ve tried:
    1. Applejack. The Command-S key combo still gets me into single user mode and I can type “applejack auto restart” and everything will run, but at the end of it all I am again left with the Apple icon and the eternally spinning clock logo.
    2. DiskWarrior v3.03: I start with the DiskWarrior CD in and repair my hard drive directory just fine.
    3. Tiger DVD installer: DiskUtility runs fine from here and I’ve repaired the internal hard drive and permissions several times. This also tells me that S.M.A.R.T. status is verified.
I’m completely out of ideas. Any suggestions as to how to get my PowerBook back up and running would be most appreciated. If I can’t get it up and running, is there any way I can grab the data from the last week of work off of it using target mode or some other trick (unfortunately, FileValut is enabled on the PowerBook)?
    Thank you very much!!!
    1.25 GHz G4 15” PowerBook with 1GB factory RAM running OS 10.4.6

Go to this post at the MacFixIt forums:
    here
Many kind people gave good advice; however, as detailed in that post, I had to eventually just reinstall software. You might try some of the other suggestions posted by folks there before reinstalling the system. Hope this helps.

  • Time Capsule spinning clock?

The spinning clock on my time capsule no longer functions. (The one in the header at the top of the computer screen) It used to spin when a backup was in progress. Since installing OS 10.9.1, it no longer "spins" even though a backup is being done. Is there something I can do to restart this function?

Apple has decided for you that you no longer want the clock to spin in Mavericks, so they have not provided a way to allow that to happen.

Try resetting it: hold the on/off and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo (ignore the off slider that appears first), then release.

  • Spinning Clock continuously appears on screen / red light off & on

    Dear Bberry community,
My new blackberry curve 8320 worked fine only for about two weeks, until I turned it on when I was leaving an aiplane. A spinning clock started appearing on the screen and it doesn't let me do anything, then the screen turns black and then the clock re appears and so on.
I have tried every reset option I've seen on the web but none of them have worked, not even the computer recognizes the device.
    Any thoughts on a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

You most likely need to reload the OS to the device.  Hope you had a backup because your data on the phone is most likely gone.
