10.4.9 Update, Permissions repair, & Enterprise deployment
Greetings,
I maintain 40 Macs in an advertising office, 12 are Mac Pros, the rest mostly
G5s with a few late gen G4s doing various tasks. Using ARD I can push updates out usually fairly easily to all of them.
But, in a case like this update, everywhere I look people are giving the recommendation to repair permissions. Is there a way to repair permissions on a bunch of Macs at once?
Don't have money in the budget for
a remote deployment software such as 'Casper'.
So, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have by the way, I have a Mac Pro, and a G4 2x1.25 updated and running
10.4.9 since Wednesday this week without problems. All I did to prep is run the little Freeware app 'Main Menu' repairing permissions and clear caches.
Thanks in advance!

Hello zbud.
Actually, there is no need to repair permissions before installing a system update. You should, however, make sure that the filesystem is OK before installing it, and verifying/repairing the disk properly not only cannot be automated, but requires starting up from a different disk:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Installing software updates
Note that Apple doesn’t mention anywhere the need to repair permissions either before or after installing a system update, not even for troubleshooting system update issues. It’s the disk itself (i.e. the filesystem), rather than permissions, what should be verified/repaired before installing anything. There is no harm in also repairing permissions if you want to do it anyway, though, but doing it after installing the update is enough; there is absolutely no need to also do it before installing the update.
Note also that no applications should be running while installing the update and that you may experience unexpected results if there are third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.
That said, Mac OS X has a command line tool called diskutil that you may find useful.

Permissions Repair Messages after Updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_22.
I've done permissions verifying, and repairs for years now. I'm also aware that many resulting messages can be safely ignored, but after the recent Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_22. update, there are two new messages. I hoping someone can offer some advice as to whether these can be ignored as well. My computer seems to be functioning fine. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Today I have had some really strange things showing up on my iMAC when I went to Finder, for instance there were a couple of things there "Folders Actions Setup which I took a screenshot of which is way too big to post here and also had "mail attachment" which put the screenshot into a blank email!
Anyone have any ideas? I am now quite concerned.
Thank you.

Some thoughts on Permissions Repair Failure and Software Update Failure
Here is what I am thinking about these issues. There are a few documented errors that are common when permissions repair is performed and the general consensus at this point is that these errors do not constitute a grave concern. But not being able to repair permissions at all is not good and having this process take an inordinate amount of time is also not good. Also, having the software update crash or fail to run sucessfully or cause additional problems is not good.
I believe these are indications of a low level corruption of the OS. Where this corruption resides or what caused it is open to speculation and may (will) vary from system to system. In any case, were these problems happening on my computer I would be concerned enough to consider backing up my system and performing a complete reformatting of the hard drive and reinstalling the OS "from scratch". Of course I would attempt all of the "known fixes" first but if these were not successful or were only partially successful, I would reinstall on a reformatted drive. When I say "reformatted" what I mean is that I would delete all partitions, "zero" the drive, create new partitions and go from there. It's one of the permissions you can safely ignore without any problem. Snow Leopard vs Long list of permissions repairs from 10.5.8 update
Hello Everyone,
My question is more of result of technical curiosity than anything else.
This is the first Mac that I have ever owned, therefore it must be said that I have never upgraded the Mac OS X operating system before.
It is well documented here in these forums that the latest update to Leopard (10.5.8) resulted in a rather long list of permissions repairs for many users, including myself. I have read through most of the posts regarding this issue and have even taken the advice which several of you have given to "reapply the combo update twice without doing a permissions repair"
Nevertheless, the list is still there, and according to most users, as well Apple, these can be ignored.
Having said that, I fully intend to upgrade to Snow Leopard when it is released on Friday...But, when I do, should I assume that since the upgrade essentially installs a new operating system, the permissions data base will show up without any permissions errors? Or is the only way to clear the permissions list, a "nuke and pave" (erase and install) which purportedly is not an option on the upgrade disc.
Most of you out there are smarter than I am and much more experienced with the process so any expert advice you may have would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
joeIn all the articles you've read through, it doesn't seem you quite understand the issue.
When they put out 10.5.8, Apple replaced a lot of files with links to the originals. The repair database doesn't know that they are supposed to be links. So, permission repair reports them as different than what it expects. There is nothing wrong. Stop repairing permissions for no reason and they won't bother you.
There is nothing you can do to cause them to go away. When Apple puts out another update, they will hopefully update the database so that it recognizes those links and doesn't report them. However, I expect at some time in the future, stuff will change and the permission database will not get updated, and you will see similar notifications. -

About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions Feature
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
From the last link: "Repair Disk Permissions often produces messages while it is running. These messages are generally of an informational nature and can usually be ignored. Some of these messages may be repeated every time Repair Disk Permissions is run as the receipt for the object in question is forcing the setting of specific permissions, even if no correction is required. Again, these can also be ignored. *Only messages indicating the failure of the Repair Disk Permissions process, or the inability to correct permissions on a specific file or folder, should be of concern."*
The more you educate yourself on the Mac OS X, the more confidence you will have in the system.
I just ran Disk Utility and have the same permissions as you. As long as you see this at the end...
Permissions Repair complete. You're fine.

Hello,
We wrote our own iBooks and PDF's for an internal, enterprise deployment. We need to distribute them to iPad users and then manage them (updates, etc.). Due to the content, there is no need and little desire to make them publically accessible (post on a webpage, use Drobox, Box, etc.). We could put them on smartcard or password controlled site. They are quite large so emailing them is a pain. In these later cases, it then requires the user to manually download the file, then when an update comes along, delete the old and download the new (a big pain). It would be best to do this automatically at night.
We're using MacOS Server Profile Manager for our MDM, which can push self-created apps & webclips but not iBooks and pdfs. It would be great if PM could add/delete/update iBooks & PDFs iOS iBooks app ... like it can with apps & webclips.
Until then, what's the solution to manage senstive iBooks & PDFs?
Create one (or more) apps the we self-publish & distribute that contains the iBooks and PDF files? Then update the very large app?
Thanks,
KWhat about using a WebDav? Download a 3rd party WebDav APP and go to the following URL on your server:
https://subdoamin.yourdomain.com/webdav/
You do have to enable the share for WebDav to do this in server app but it works great. We use it for iWork and pdf documents.
Thanks,

This is a tad bit more text than I am used to, and am wondering about the console.jar and "Virtual Machines" as I"ve not seen these before. Any ideas? Anything I should worry about?
Oh, Java test site says Java is working fine and is the most recent version.I´m also for a week now with a big problem in Mail - hundreds of messages got blank and disappeared after "rebuild", now it won´t even synchronize. I put this in a thread in the Mail forum, but solutions only go as far as backups - which I don´t have. It started after installing the last Java patch and it still the same after updating to 10.6.5 and permission repair (which shows:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
to sum up: Sent mails are lost, received mails before certain dates (few days back in 1 account, years back in another and no trouble in the third one) won´t get downloaded again, even with new setup of the account - and all started after the java patch.
Help is very appreciated (maybe I can restore my sent mails from somewhere?!)

everything seems to be working OK, what does this mean?It means you have not read these boards and the millions of posts like yours.
Nothing to worry about, it's normal. You can make all but one go away by downloading and installing the 10.5.1 update from Apple's site.
Happy New Year!

No issues, but curious..why do I always get permissions repaired when I click on 'repair permissions' in Disk Utility ??......it usually has to do with core permissions and it's happened since i got this MacBook Pro in 3/11..I'll try this every 2/3 wks and always get repairs.....yet, I don't really have issues....it's been weird.......it continues with 10.7 and the update to 10.7.1.. a sample:

Consecutive running of repair produces same result - so, clearly NONE of the "repairs" have actually been "repaired!" Also, anyone know what the heck the LAST ENTRY means? I CERTAINLY HAVE NOT REPAIRED AN SUID FILE!!Apple says to ignore this. It is a known issue.

OS 10.7.5 W' permissions repair problems. How to fix it?
I have a 27" iMac running os 10.7.5 and i'm having permissions repair problems ever since my last os update, does anyone know whats going on and how to fix it? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Something doesn’t sound right. The messages shouldn’t be ignored if you restart the Disk Utility app and the same permission errors show up. I’ve even rebooted the OS and found the same errors. I also mistrust the file check function (vs Drive Genius reports).
None of this ever happened until the last patch 10.7.5 (11G63). -

Then allowed the machine to run with no apps active, just in case the OS was perfroming cleanup funtions. Results: No discernible improvement in performance. The kernal_task shows 500+% and the CPU graph shows 70%-80%.
There is one hardware issue: The magsafe battery port stopped charging the battery, so the laptop must be plugged in all the time.

Can I delete Receipts.pkg files? For Permissions repair, verify first?
I recently read that all *.bom (/Library/Receipts/boms/*.bom) files should be preserved so Mac os x knows what files an installer put into which location. But what about those large .pkg files (/Library/Receipts/*.pkg)? Those take up more than half a GB on my drive. Can I just dump all the *.pkg files?
On another note, when I want to repair permissions I can either "Verify" or "Repair" disk permissions. I suspect I don't have to verify permissions when the repair button can be pressed, assuming that verification is part of the repair? Or do I have to go verify and then repair? Can I just dump all the *.pkg files?
If you do then Software Update will be confused and Permissions Repair will be damaged. So, don’t.
No you don’t have to verify before repairing Permissions.

Disk Utility-Permissions Repair doesn't seem to repair anything
I have recently installed Leopard, and so far I haven't had any serious issues. However, I used the 'Repair Permissions' function in Disk Utility today, and it doesn't seem to have repaired anything.
As a rule, I run 'Repair Permissions' two times in a row, just in case it missed anything the first time around. When I ran it a second time, everything that it had supposedly fixed on the first run was showing up the second time.
Is there any reason that permissions repair wouldn't be making the necessary changes? If so, how can I fix it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.Hi DJ EeeKay

We need to be able to lock ipad folders. (or is there an app I cant find?)
We use our ipad as a communication and education tool for my son who has autism. I want him to have free access to certain apps, but not others. I would think the ability to lock an app folder is the simplest solution and I don't know why this is n
