10.4.9 Upgrade: Fails. Reboot results in Kernel Panic ACPI error

I am upgrading 11 MacBook Pros 10.4.6 to 10.4.9. Becasue they are all on a slow Wifi I am using the manual updates via a thumb drive.
So far 2 out of 6 have failed the install process. One gave me a general error. I tried to re-run the program but when I did the font for the drop down menu turned into all boxes with capital As inside them. In both cases when I have rebooted I have gotten a Kernel Panic ACPI error. I have tried all the Kernel Panic tricks mentioned in the 10.4.9 threads. I am now reinstalling on the two machines.
1 of 6 did the install just fine but is now stopped on the "Starting Mac OS X..." screen with a full blue bar.
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?

You may find the following useful:
From a recent article at MacFixit:
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Special Report: Update procedure recommendation
First, make a full backup of your current Mac OS X installation -- preferably a clone ( try SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner). If something goes wrong, or you experience a major incompatibility after updating, the backup will prove invaluable.
Next, if you are the cautious type, run a disk repair on the volume targeted for installation. You can use an n alternative startup drive or your Mac OS X installation disc. If you are starting up from your Mac OS X install disc, put the disc in your optical drive and restart holding down the "C" key. After your system starts up and you've selected your language, go to the "Utilties" menu and select "Disk Utility." Use the "Repair Disk" function. After disk repairs are complete, restart from your normal startup drive and continue.
Avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring.
Performing other tasks during the update process potentiates various issues, including problems with prebinding (which is happening during the "Optimizing the system" phase of the update process) and others that can occur when files are being replaced by the update are also being read/written by the currently logged in user. You should not only refrain from launching applications or working with files during the update process, but also from putting the system to sleep, disconnecting/connecting devices, and other potentially interruptive actions.
In addition, before installing the update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted. Also, note that the first restart after applying Mac OS X 10.4.9 may be abnormally long. Subsequent restarts should take place at normal speed.
And this further article from MacFixit is also very important:
When a Mac OS X update won't install with "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message
The error message "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" may appear when attempting to install a Mac OS X updater or a full release from disc. Generally the problem falls into one of the following categories:
Make sure you are using the right updater (Server vs. client) There are usually a few varieties of the same Mac OS X update version. Make sure that you are not trying to install the Intel client build on a PowerPC-based Mac, or the Server build on a Mac OS X client system.
Although we generally recommend using the standalone Mac OS X updaters rather than Software Update, the latter method will generally correctly identify the copy of Mac OS X applicable to your current system state.
Retail vs. shipped-with-system (build numbers) Different Macs ship with different builds of Mac OS X, and one build may not be compatible with a different system. The build that ships with a MacBook Core 2 Duo, for instance, may not properly install on a Mac Pro. Hence you may receive the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message when mixing and matching systems and discs.
Some retail copies of Mac OS X 10.4.x may also be unable to install on some systems that require newer builds.
In addition, it appears that while some builds will install on specific systems, those systems will then refuse to accept subsequent updates. To ensure compatibility, inspect the following matrices:
• Mac OS: Versions, builds included with Intel-based Macs
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
• Mac OS: Versions, builds included with PowerPC Macs (since 1998)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
and note that you should not use a Mac OS version earlier than the one included with the computer.
Combo vs. Delta Remember that delta Mac OS X updaters can only update systems version-to-version, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.8 to Mac OS X 10.4.9. Combo updaters can bring any version within the scope of a major release (Panther, Tiger, etc.) up-to-date, e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.3 to Mac OS X 10.4.9.
Attempting to run a delta update on anything other than the directly precedent version may result in the "Volume does not meet requirements for this update" message.

  • Looking for a Reboot Tool that initiate a reboot after a kernel Panics?

    Hello
Is their a program around that can be installed on OS X that initiate a reboot after a kernel panics occured? Or is it possible change the parameter of the firmware to reboot after a kernel panics. Some Tools like TinkerTool are able to change to sleep mode of the mac, maybe another tool is able to change the reboot mode

Use a dongle such as this one. Implementation of it in software alone requires Mac OS X Server.

  • SSD fails to verify after kernel panic?

I have been using a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD as my main boot drive in my MBP for about 6 months now with no issues. Last week, I randomly got a kernel panic and had to reboot my mac, however, it failed to boot. After opening the recovery tools, the disk utility failed to mount the SSD. After trying to reboot several times, the drive finally mounted and I tried a verify/repair, both of which failed. I also tried the Apple hardware diagnostic tool which ran without issue.
I then took the drive out and placed it in my Windows desktop. Using Samsung's disk "magician" I ran a diagnostics of the disk which said nothing was wrong. I updated the firmware and tried it in my MBP again where it still failed to mount/verify.  I then put the disk in an external SATA->thunderbolt enclosure I had and the disk was not only recognized but booted, verified, etc completely fine as an external drive.
I then took my old internal HDD and put that in my MBP, wondering if perhaps it was my macbook that had the issue. However, this also booted and verified fine, suggesting it was in fact the SSD with the issue.
I called Samsung, and (painlessly) returned the drive and they shipped another one out to me. I continued to use my old HDD in my MBP with no issues while waiting on the shipment. Today it arrived, first I restored my OS to the SSD using my external enclosure and the drive booted and verified fine with no issues. I reinstalled it inside my Macbook and suddenly the drive no longer boots or verifies properly and will not repair - disk utility tells me to format the drive, which I tried, which then produces the same result.
I then tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, both of which had no effect.
I am completely at a loss at this point....
tl;dr Kernel panic, SSD no longer works internally, but is fine in external SATA->thunderbolt enclosure, original HDD boots fine internally. Replacement SSD also fails with same weird issue (works externally but not internally). Regular HDD still works in internal bay.
After using an SSD for so long I can't go back to just using a regular HDD, the speed difference is painful...but SSD no longer seems to work. What is going on here? Has anyone experienced anything like this before and what are my options?

The new SSD seems to only have issues verifying partitions. If I select the physical volume in disk utility, it verifies fine with no errors. Any and all Mac partitions (MSDOS seems to work....) fail to verify or repair.
From what I've found, the only people with similar issues either A) had a "faulty" SATA cable or B) didn't enable TRIM on their SSD. Since a regular HDD still works fine in the internal bay where the SSD was installed, it can't be the former and I had enabled TRIM when I installed the SSD so it shouldn't be the latter.

  • Initial Time machine backup to Time capsule results in kernel panic

I recently purchased a Retina display MacBook Pro (running Lion at the time) and transferred the data from an external hard drive with my Time Machine backups from my previous MBP. I also bought a new Time Capsule.
The first time I tried to back up to the Time Capsule from the Retina MBP via an ethernet connection it got to 40GB of 140GB before it shut down from a kernel panic. Interestingly, the Time Machine backup was successful when I used the external hard drive I was previously using for my Time Machine backups (connected via USB).
I don't think there is an issue with the Time Capsule because Finder can locate the Time Capsule and I can copy and paste files from the Macintosh HD to the Time Capsule disk.
I've done the following steps in order to try and fix the problem:
    1. Repair permissions
    2. Verify and Repair Macintosh HD
    3. Updated the operating system to Mountain Lion (at which point I successfully completed a Time Machine backup to the external hard drive I was using for Time machine backups but was unable to backup to the Time Capsule without the computer crashing from a kernel panic)
    4. Used Airport Utility to erase the sparse disk image bundle that had been created on the Time Capsule then tried to back up via ethernet to the time capsule - kernel panic ensued at 40GB of 140GB
    5. Used Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD and re-installed Mountain Lion. Transferred data from the external hard drive Time Machine backup from step 3.
    6. Erased the sparse disk image bundle on the Time Capsule again.
    7. Tried to backup to the Time Capsule again via Ethernet - kernel panic.
For each of the attemtps to back up to the Time Capsule I've used a different ethernet cable (Cat 5 and 5e) and plugged it into a different ethernet port on the Time Capsule each time. I've also tried using both Thunderbolt ports on the MBP (with an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor).
I'm out of ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem and would greatly appreciate any ideas!!

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
    LaCie drive software
    VirusBarrier
I suggest you uninstall them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault. "VirusBarrier" is harmful and should not be reinstalled in any case.
If there's no improvement after making the suggested changes, post again.

  • Flash (video) results in kernel panic/unresponsive UI

I have a MacBook 4,1. Watching flash video (it is neither site nor browser specific) sometimes results in a kernel panic with associated message, and everything stops responding. Most of the time the screen instead freezes but the sound continues to play. I am able to move the mouse around, but not click on anything. No keyboard shortcuts work, though the caps lock light will go on/off.
One of these situations always presents itself within 30 minutes (of continuous, or very nearly continuous watching). I am yet to see the problem occur in any other situation. I have tried a full uninstall and reinstall of flash to to avail. About 2 months ago, the stock 2GB RAM was swapped our for 4GB. The Apple Hardware Test (inc. the more thorough diagnostic) reported no problems, though I can't find the original 2GB to compare to. I have Windows 7 installed under bootcamp and very rarely get BSODs or complete OS locks when using it.
To rule out overheating, the fan was forced to a constant ~6200RPM. The highest temp was on the CPU, which was still always below 62 Celsius (mostly in the high 50s), and the crash/lock occurred as before.
Any suggestions as to the cause? Or further troubleshooting techniques? Either would be greatly appreciated!

Kernel panic logs are only given when I actually get the KP message. Here is the most recent log:

  • My new (late 2013) iMac keeps rebooting due to kernel panic

I just picked up a brand-new iMac and pumped it up with 32Gb of RAM. Kinda surprised to have unexpected restarts twice a day (although it really does reboot FAST) Sorta bad though as I'm a designer and need to keep saving my projects every 30 seconds for fear of crashes.
Anybody else? Here's the report.... Fun part is the BSD process name is different every time

SInce it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support, formerly Apple Express Lane and let them deal with it.
Alternatively, boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall Parallels. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

  • Faxing results in Kernel Panic?

Not that I send many faxes ... but once in a while it might happen I need to send info by fax ... and since 2 days I have a traditional tel line ... so I wanted to try the fax possibilities inside the print/fax PDF option ... I have the latest MacOsX on my PB.
and 2 times the same thing happened:
I select a simple doc choose a fax number and "fax" the Kernel Panic screen drops down??
    anybody ??
my systemprefs are activated to fax

There are lots of problems faxing with the fax utilities provided in Macs.
It appears that Apple forums are very poorly supported. Often, I have received no inputs to a question, too.
The last few Macs I used had fax utilities based on FAXstfX softwarre - all of which have been horribly buggy, in my experience.
    Apple appears not to care.
Similarly, in my experience, I and many others have posted reports of the Safari browser hanging (resulting in the endlessly spinning polychrome wheel). Similarly, Apple appears not to care.
I need a new laptop, and I am probably going to go for a PC because Apple technical support is no better than what I can get for a PC, and a PC is three times less expensive than a Mac.

  • Kernel Panic - imac rebooting please help?

    Hello
My 2009 iMac continues to reboot due to kernel panic during the past couple of week. It happes several times a day. I cannot find any specific cause and it seems to happen randomly. That is even when the computer is on standby. I hvae searched the web, but cannot find a solution. The problem is getting worse.
I have tried apple hardware test that detected no problems. I have upgraded the imac last yaer with a Samsung SSD and its running 6 gb ram. It has worked flawless until now. Should I consider buying a new Imac?

  • Upgraded and now get Kernel Panic

Upgraded tonight and immediately got Kernel Panic's and now cannot boot from disk or in safe mode. Please please help. This is why I didn't want to upgrade.

I've been running SL for over a year on my 24" iMac. SL isn't the issue; most likely, bad RAM.

  • Can I set up a way to automatic reboot after a kernal panic?

    Hey,
I'm working with Mac OS X Server (10.4.9) that is on a 4x2.5 GHz PowerPC G5. I been looking for a way to set up my server to automatically reboot after a kernel panic. Can any one show me the way?
    Thanks
    Mike

We use to use a 'spare' server for testing but could be pushed into production. For when IBM needed to come in and replace a faulty card.
Get on-site contract, and order an Xserve and use the old G5 Quad workhorse as spare... but you said this is not your usual company, so maybe that don't see things like an IT might.
Swap out RAM for one. Install ECC which Quad can use. And those FAQ lists make a good spreadsheet of what happens.
You might just start with Apple Hardware Test and a memory test.
Warmer weather, I assume it is in climate controlled room?
Have you read up on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com reports on Quad owners and liquid cooling? I know some that went through three motherboards (on-site swap) and a few that walked away with Mac Pro because it was determined the patient reached the point of not being able to be revived.

  • Creative Zen Microphoto - "Firmware upgrade failed&qu

    Hi,
two days ago my Zen Microphoto started in "Recovery Mode".
I had no means of getting out. I first selected "Clean Up" and rebooted, still "Recovery Mode".
Then I downloaded the latest firmware version for it:
    ZENMicroPhoto_PCFW_L6__3_0.exe
Then I selected "Upgrade Firmware", acknowledged with "Yes", the firmware was deleted, but the windows firmware application said "no player connected" after connecting the player.
Okay, after googling a bit, I found out that I needed to downgrade from WMP to WMP 0.
I (painfully) did this and after installing an additional Registry Key via fixup.cmd the
    ZENMicroPhoto_PCFW_L6__3_0.exe
detected the player (hurray!). It showed "Current Player Firmware Version .20.0 " and "Upgrade File Version .3.0".
When clicking on "Upgrade" at the windows application, the blue progress bar appeared and the player showed "Recovery Mode" and a blinking USB logo.
What it did NOT show afterwards was a gear symbol with "Upgrading firmware" (which I found on a screenshot in the internet).
When the blue progress bar of the windows firmware upgrade application reached about 85% it halted and after minute the windows firmware application showed "Firmware upgrade failed!" while the player only showed a black screen with "Recovery Mode" and the green battery symbol at the top.
I also tried the same procedure with
ZenMicroPhotoP4S_PCFW_LB__20_0.exe with the same result: "Firmware upgrade failed!"
Any ideas how to "repair" the player

I have this same problem except with the Zen Vision: M. Any help would be appreciated.

  • DPM 2012 R2 upgrade fails to run dpmsync -restoredb.

    Hi,
Im experiencing some problems when trying to restore dpmdb.bak
Original setup was Win2012 Std. with DPM 2012 SP1 and latest RU, on a physical HP DL 360 Gen8
    SQL is a local instance 2008 R2
Upgrade failed at the very end saying "failed to create dpm service", it was suggested that the probable cause
was that the system was pending reboot wich it was not!
I followed the error message and uninstalled DPM, rebooted and reinstalled DPM2012 R2, during install I had to point out an existing DPM instance/database wich I did, klicked the "check and install" and went on installing without any further problems.
I also checked "retain data" during the install.
When trying to restore the db using syntax "dpmsync -restoredb -dbloc c:\temp\dpmdb.bak -instancename msdpm2012 -dpmdbname dpmdb" I get the following error.
    "Error ID: 454
DpmSync failed to connect to the specified SQL Server instance. Make sure that y
ou have specified a valid SQL server instance associated with DPM and you are lo
gged on as a user with administrator privileges.
Detailed Error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while esta
blishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessi
ble. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured
to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could
not open a connection to SQL Server)"
I enabled Named Pipes and entered TCP/IP port 1433 in SQL configuration manager and ran the command again with the same result.
When checking the databse using SQL Mgmt. Studio I found out that there was now two databases, the original MSDPM and
a new db named MSDPM_Servername, confusion!
Now, my SQL knowledge is poor to say the least so I'm hoping that someone has a solution or a tip to push me forward.
Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Peter Åkerblom Stockholm.

    Additional information.
We found out that the dpmsync -restoredb command failed with reason "access denied", it could not overwrite the original db.
So we dropped the original db and moved it out of its default folder and ran the command again.
The dpmdb did this time in fact get restored to default path but some errors.
    From event log:
The description for Event ID 3750 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
Version 4.1.3313.0 of the DPM database, and version 4.2.1205.0 of the DPM application are not compatible.
    Problem Details:
    <DatabaseVersionMismatch><__System><ID>29</ID><Seq>0</Seq><TimeCreated>2014-10-21 07:45:57</TimeCreated><Source>d:\btvsts\21011\private\product\engine\service\dll\servicemodule.cpp</Source><Line>183</Line><HasError>True</HasError></__System><DatabaseVersion>4.1.3313.0</DatabaseVersion><BinariesVersion>4.2.1205.0</BinariesVersion></DatabaseVersionMismatch>"
From what I understand a database version upgrade should be taken care of during dpmsync-restoredb but I must be miskaten.
Any suggestions on how to upgrade the databse ?
    Peter.

    We have got this resolved, after raising a case with TAC they identified that we were hitting the following bug;
    CSCub53409
The detail on the bug is very limited but in our case it was caused by an issue with the numbering plan, GBNB 1.1(21) - we upgraded to the latest version 1.1(29) and the upgrade has now completed.

  • On Windows 7 PC, got the "upgrade iTunes" notice, said sure, but the upgrade failed, now I can't access iTunes "invalid permissions"

On Windows 7 PC, got the "upgrade iTunes" notice this morning, said sure, but the upgrade failed, now I can't access iTunes "invalid permissions"
I wasn't paying attention so I don't know the precise error I got on the upgrade failure.
All other iTunes upgrades have been fine...no brainers.  Done several on this W7 PC.
If I re-download and install a fresh iTunes I assume I will lose my library...true?  Can I find and save off my library so I don't have to "discover" all my music which is scattered all over the PC and a 1T attached USB drive.
Or is there some way to get the iTunes upgrade to successfully restart and install correctly?
    Help!

    Hello there, Konami84.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some recomendations for troubleshooting:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • UpGrade failed 9.3.4294 (2005 SP3 PatchSet 9) to 10.50.1600.1.

    Hi, I've tried an UpGrade from 9.3.4294 (2005 SP3 PatchSet 9) to 10.50.1600.1. (SAP media ID 51039339)
The setup failed by execution of 'sqlagent100_msdb_upgrade.sql' with error code 574.
I found the following KB articele http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960781 and this blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/psssql/archive/2008/09/10/upgrade-for-sql-server-2008-can-fail-if-you-have-renamed-the-sa-account.aspx.
I could start the service and execute the proposed statement to my named instance as followes:
    ...Binnsqlservr.exe" -sSAPQPT -c -f -T 3608
<-- message if sqlcmd is active:

only; no user action is required.
    sqlcmd -S tpzsqp01SAPQPT -E -A -Q"alter login <sys-admin> with name = sa"
<-- this gives no feedback to the console...
After this I've used the Repair function of the SQL 2008 setup, but it failed on the same scipt 'sqlagent100_msdb_upgrade.sql'.
I've also tried to change the sa password
    sqlcmd -S tpzsqp01SAPQPT -E -A -Q"ALTER LOGIN sa WITH PASS

But I'm not able to connect to the server via TCP
    C:Windowssystem32>sqlcmd -U sa

TCP Provider: No connection could be made because the target machine actively re

re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not

Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.
At the moment I don't know what is wrong with the master db and why the setup can not connect with the sa account... we did not change this account in the past?! I've done the setup and this failed with the same error as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960781. I've followed up this KB article but it did not solve the problem. The problem is still available.
